In 2004, a little movie called Napoleon Dynamite came out and quickly became The cult movie of the decade. It made the director, Jared Hess, a hot ticket, and for his follow-up, he opted to team with Jack Black for a luchador wrestling comedy called Nacho Libre. In it, Black plays Ignacio, a cook at an orphanage run by monks in Mexico, who idolizes luchador wrestlers, even though the sport is forbidden within the monastery. When the church runs out of the funds needed to feed the many orphans they take care of, Ignacio decides to pursue his dream of being a wrestler to raise money for the kids.
Too bad he sucks as a wrestler.
In this pretty hilarious little comedy, Black delivers perhaps his greatest physical performance as Ignacio transforms into the legendary wrestler Nacho Libre. While it’s become a somewhat forgotten film, it’s worth noting that...

Those who could afford it hid in their Vault-Tec vaults. As for the rest of humanity, they were forced to confront the horrors of this new world head on. Now over 200 years after that war, one young Vault Dweller will risk it all and travel to the surface.

Jesse Eisenberg’s latest Sasquatch Sunset audience looked a little different than your typical film screening. The actor-producer took his movie back to the source material this week, showing it to a group of bonobos at Ape Initiative in Des Moines, Iowa.
The film, released at Sundance earlier this year, features Eisenberg and co-star Riley Keough dressed in prosthetic bodysuits to portray a family of sasquatches journeying across North America. The actors attended “ape camp” to learn how to move as their primate characters for the David and Nathan Zellner written-directed film, which hit select theaters on April 12.
In People‘s footage of Eisenberg and the Zellners’ visit, several of the primates watch the film closely. “The bonobos were very curious about Sasquatch Sunset,” Dr. Jared Taglialatela, the director of Ape Initiative, and Dr. Sara Skiba, Ape Initiative’s director of communication, told the outlet. “For many of the bonobos,...

Before he went on to make HBO’s hit series The White Lotus, Mike White would partner with Jack Black for the charmingly funny music-themed comedy School of Rock. The movie drew on Black’s affinity for the music genre as he would previously play as one-half of the rock duo Tenacious D with Kyle Glass. While he’s currently obsessed with Minecraft after his time filming the movie adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Black’s eager to return to the School of Rock for another movie.
According to THR, Black would recently speak with the publication Joe, when he said, “I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo.” Black would also love to see White return to write the movie, “You know Mike White wrote the first one and he’s a genius. Before they had a plot for “Ninety-Five Senses,” Jared Hess and Jerusha Hess knew that they wanted to lead a project that would give them the opportunity to have several animators working on the film. “We wanted to get five to six animators and the producers to be involved. So, [writers] Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer said, ‘Let’s write a story that could feature each one really succinctly.’ That’s how they came up with the five senses as the vehicle to tell Coy’s story,” Jerusha tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
“Ninety-Five Senses” centers on Coy, an old man who is recounting memories associated with each of his senses as an ominous event draws near. The short is now an Oscar nominee for Best Animated Short Film. It marks the first nomination for the husband and wife directors. The couple are...

About a decade ago, Netflix was sitting pretty, pulling in growing numbers of viewers with TV shows they had licensed from other networks. Some might remember how, in 2013, NBCUniversal licensed the streaming rights for "The Office" to Netflix, allowing it to become a frequently re-watched series for the streaming service. 2013 was when, some might say, early rumblings of what was to become the Streaming Wars began. Companies began keeping their own properties under their own umbrellas, each hoping that it could launch a successful streaming service of its own. Netflix also began making original content, a move that was considered risible at the time.
We all know the hoarding, overspending, and striking that the Streaming Wars ultimately begat, but just prior to the War, streaming seemed like a sustainable model. Studios would license their movies to a third-party streamer, they would earn revenue, and many older shows and movies were advertised as being more available.

Everyone has a high school movie that rings uncomfortably true to their own experiences as a teenager. For some, it's a bitingly satirical portrait like "Heathers" or "Mean Girls," while for others, it's a brutally honest dramedy like "The Edge of Seventeen." But for me, there's only one film that really captures what my time was like as a non-Mormon attending a predominantly Mormon high school in a small Utah town in the early 2000s, and that's "Napoleon Dynamite." True, writer/director Jared Hess' 2004 cult hit takes place in the filmmaker's hometown of Preston, Idaho, but ... well, let's just say that if you know anything about small-town Utah and Idaho Mormon culture, then you know they weren't exactly worlds apart when the film was made.

Who doesn't love Owen Wilson? In the late '90s, the blond star burst on the scene in Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket," snuck into big productions like "The Haunting" and "Armageddon," and then hit the big time when he teamed with Jackie Chan for the blockbuster "Shanghai-Noon" and its sequel. Since then, Wilson has expanded his portfolio with instant classics like "Zoolander," "Wedding Crashers," and "Midnight in Paris," and continues to show off his knack for lighthearted comedy in films such as "The French Dispatch," and the Marvel Disney+ series, "Loki."
Wilson even has his own animated franchise, Disney/Pixar's "Cars," in which he plays Lightning McQueen, a role he's returned to various times, including the California Adventure theme park ride. There's nothing he can't do, and his careful project selection typically ensures quality despite a small handful of duds during his nearly three-decade stay on the Hollywood A-list.

The sparkling silver Gucci gown Jessica Chastain wore when she presented at last month’s Oscars has a new home: Gucci Salon on Melrose Place.

Jack Black has filled audiences with laughter through his many iconic film roles over the years. The actor launched his career in the early 1990s, but grew popular by the 2000s for his work in "High Fidelity," "School of Rock," and "Nacho Libre." Los Angeles, April 10 (Ians) Actor Jack Black has some ideas for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ sequel and he is suggesting Pedro Pascal get cast as Wario.
Black voices Bowser in the animated movie and although he is not sure if his character would return for a potential follow-up film, he would want ‘The Mandalorian’ star to voice Mario’s arch-rival, reports ‘Deadline’.
“It’s not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few ‘Kung Fu Panda’ movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing,” Black told Game Spot.
“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

Jack Black has appeared in a ton of movies since making his film debut in the early 1990s. The actor has such a distinctive comedic style and onscreen presence that it’s easy to see why his fans have remained so loyal over the years. So it’s wild to think that, had he not signed on for one of his most iconic roles, screenwriter Mike White wouldn’t have made School of Rock at all.
‘School of Rock’ is one of Jack Black’s most beloved movies
Ask any fan of Black’s what their favorite role of the actor’s is, and a few highlights will likely rise to the top. Early on, Black broke through with standout supporting turns in movies like High Fidelity and Orange County. February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

In another universe, the memorable theme of "Mad Men" was an indie rock ballad. The suspenseful string composition by DJ RJD2 was actually not the series creator's first choice for the show's intro. In fact, the acclaimed musician Beck revealed that he was approached first to make the show's theme song. He turned the opportunity down — and he's regretted it ever since.
Beck first established himself as an indie rock musician in the 1990s. His hit song "Loser" propelled him to mainstream success. He went on to write and perform songs for a number of films, from dramas like "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" to comedies like "Nacho Libre." His songs also appeared in several unforgettable sitcoms of the early 2000s, including "The O.C." and "Friday Night Lights."

Actor Jack Black, who is enjoying a decades-long career in Hollywood starring in hits such as ‘School of Rock’ and ‘Nacho Libre’, has said when he first started out he thought he was “horrible” until he saw the final cut in cinemas.
“I remember the first movie I ever did. I saw a rough cut, and I was like, “Oh, my god, I’m a bad actor. I’m horrible,” he said, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“And then, the editor just did some magic, and by the end, when it was released in theatres, I was like, “Oh, my god, I’m fantastic. I’m fantastic at acting!'”
The ‘Kung Fu Panda’ star went on to explain that it was all “magic” done in post-production and claimed that editors don’t get the credit they deserve.
He told Collider, “The editor trims away all the fat, which is a crucial job.

In true Jack Black fashion, the veteran comedic actor somersaulted his way onstage in a panda suit — seemingly in a tribute to his iconic “Kung Fu Panda” character Po — to accept the MTV Movie & TV Awards’ Comedic Genius Award.
“I don’t deserve this but I will take it,” Black said. “Thank you, MTV. This is for all the ‘School of Rock-ers’ out there, and for all the ‘Tenacious D-sciples’ and, most of all, my amazing wife Tanya [Haden] and our two incredible boys, I love you.”
The “Nacho Libre” star began his short and sweet speech joking about all of the films he’s been in: “Are you kidding? For what? ‘School of Rock,’ ‘Jumanji,’ ‘Kung Fu Panda,’ ‘Goosebumps,’ ‘Nacho Libre,’ ‘Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny,’ my sweet dance moves on TikTok? What are we talking about? It’s ridiculous!” he said, which prompted huge cheers from the audience.

Mickey Rourke’s worn-out griping in “The Wrestler” that he’s a “broken-down piece of meat” might put you somewhat in the headspace of the character that Clifton Collins, Jr. plays in “Jockey.” He’s a, as the title promises, jockey, but at the end of his tether, and grappling with the bodily consequences of years of injuries sustained from falling off the horse both proverbial and literal, and trying to get back up on it one more time. Director , even if it tends to veer closer toward the heartwarming in place of harder, grittier truths.
Collins, whose grizzled features in this film reflect a lifetime of pain and sadness, plays Jackson, a depleted jockey trying to throw himself back into the ring for one final championship. But that’s complicated by his withering health, tendency to chain-smoke and binge-drink, and concern from his longtime trainer Ruth (a predictably fabulous...

Next month, Netflix is rolling out a ton of great new Halloween-themed content, including a bunch of must-see originals like The Haunting of Bly Manor, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting and Rebecca. Unfortunately, though, it’s also losing a lot of horror films in October that would’ve made for perfect seasonal viewing.
On October 2nd, both Cult of Chucky – the last Chucky flick before the reboot – and Truth or Dare – that’s the 2017 TV movie, not the 2018 Blumhouse production – are being removed from Netflix’s library. The bulk of the horror titles leaving in October are, ironically, being removed on October 31st, though. So, if you’re hoping to do an Underworld marathon this Halloween or rewatch classics like Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow or The Silence of the Lambs, make sure you don’t leave it until the day itself.

Professional wrestler “Silver King,” who appeared in the Jack Black movie Nacho Libre, died in the ring in matches held Saturday night in London.
Silver King (real name Cesar Barron), age 51, collapsed after he was repeatedly slammed into the canvas during a “Greatest Show of Lucha Libre” event.
Fans started booing as Silver King stayed down, with the ref counting him out and his opponent, Juventud Guerrera, pretending to protest. But medics were then summoned as the wrestler remained immobile.
“It seemed to be part of the show at first but then he didn’t get up – and then the medical team was on the stage. Everybody was cleared out,” a member of the audience told the local paper, the Camden New Journal.
Barron was later pronounced dead at the scene from a heart attack. London’s Met Police told the UK newspaper The Sun that the death was being treated as “non-suspicious.

Jack Black has revealed that he wants to make a sequel to his 2006 wrestling comedy Nacho Libre.
The actor, speaking on British talkshow The Jonathan Ross Show, admitted, “I’ve always wanted to do another Nacho Libre.”
The film, which was written by Jared and Jerusha Hess and Mike White and directed by Jared Hess, was loosely based on the story of Fray Tormenta, a Mexican Catholic priest who had a 23-year career as a masked luchador and competed in order to support the orphanage he ran.
Black produced the film with White, David Klawans and Julia Pistor, which went on to gross around $100M worldwide for Paramount Pictures against a budget of $35M. In the film, Black played Ignacio, a cook for a Mexican orphanage, who turns to wrestling after he was robbed for the the tortilla chips he was collecting for the orphans.

Ah, December. A time for sipping hot beverages, retail therapy, and gathering the family around the television. This holiday season, Netflix will add blockbuster comedies new and old to its collection, as well as some more artistic fare fresh from festival circuit. Next month on the streaming platform, home viewers can catch the comedic stylings of Chris Pratt in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” in case they missed it in theaters. If you prefer something a little darker, the Wachowskis’ dystopian epic “V for Vendetta” will also be available.

Thank God for Clint Eastwood. “Sully” is the sole bright spot during this disastrous fall 2016 box office decline.
This weekend three new studio wide releases —”Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” (20th Century Fox), “Deepwater Horizon” (Lionsgate) and “Masterminds” (Relativity) — grossed a total of $56 million! Compare that to the $54 million that “The Martian” grossed by itself exactly one year ago.
With “Queen of Katwe” (Disney) drawing little interest, “The Magnificent Seven” diving 55% on its second weekend and other films not holding well, the weakness is widespread. Only “Sully” is thriving among fall openers.
This is distressing news for theaters. The 27 days of the season show a drop of 9% from last year. That’s $50 million. During the fall season a strong film or two (“The Girl on the Train” and “The Birth of a Nation” take their chances next week) can quickly change the direction, so it’s not fatal.

Packed with a star-studded cast, Jared Hess’ heist comedy “Masterminds” finally hits theaters at this weekend after months of push backs. Promising big laughs and high stakes, the film is based on the true story of the 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery, where David Scott Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) and seven other conspirators stole $17 million from a Loomis, Fargo & Co. vault in North Carolina in one of company’s armored trucks, in what was one of the largest heist in U.S history.
The film stars Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Jason Sudeikis as members, accomplices and pursuers of the bumbling crime ring. “Masterminds” exaggerates the already absurdly true premise, and while most critics praised the cast’s performances, some aren’t coming along for the goofy criminal joyride.

When you have comedy masterminds like Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, SNL alums Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and current SNL member Kate McKinnon starring in the dark comedy, Masterminds, you expect a rated-r movie, but director Jared Hess (Nacho Libre, Napoleon Dynamite) made the decision to tell the true story of a heist gone haywire as a PG-13 film.

As a filmmaker, Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) has always taken special delight in turning his actors into mortifying cartoon dorks. As an actor, Zach Galifianakis has played almost nothing but mortifying cartoon dorks. With Masterminds, these cringe-comedy connoisseurs join forces for the first time, and the character they come up with together crosses the line from amusingly pathetic into seriously, detrimentally unappealing. Rocking a bangs-and-mop hairdo that makes him look like a trailer-park medieval prince, Galifianakis is David, an armored-truck driver in North Carolina whose every action marks him as a Darwin Awards contender. Over the course of Masterminds, David grazes his own ass cheeks with a bullet, eats a dead tarantula because someone tells him to, and violently shits himself in a swimming pool. He’s a disgusting dimwit bumpkin who makes Napoleon Dynamite look like Don Draper. Unfortunately for the movie, he’s also our rooting...

Stories of great heists start with a bang and end with a whimper. But in Masterminds, a comedy based on the true story theft of an armored vehicle by incompetent robbers to the tune of $17 million, it begins with the usual plot devices: a voice over narrator, slow-motion shots for comedic effect, and a girl. And it closes not with a whimper but with title cards, pictures of the real life baddies, and comedic outtakes for good measure. Hollywood has done another of its numbers on a middling tale, and not in a good way.
The girl in question is Kelly, played with unusual quietness by Kristen Wiig, and the hapless lover is David Scott Ghant, portrayed by Zach Galifianakis sporting pageboy bangs. Ghant works at an armored vehicle company with Kelly, and falls hard for her. After she introduces Ghant to swindler Steve Chambers, the expectably soft-spoken Owen Wilson,...

Things get serious this weekend. Three studio released with a combined cost of some $300 million —”Deepwater Horizon” (Lionsgate), “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” (20th Century Fox) and “Masterminds” (Relativity)— are opening on a single early fall release date.
After three fall weeks, Clint Eastwood’s “Sully” is the sole clear winner with “The Magnificent Seven” opening in the mid-$30 millions. So the season is down 15% so far.
For all three new releases, this timing could be perilous. The same weekend in 2015, “The Martian” opened at $54 million and the second weekend of “Hotel Transylvania 2” scored $33 million, boosting a Top Ten total to $140 million. Weekend results could bring both marginal returns for the three studios as well as a continuation of the downward trend.
At least each of this week’s debut films can rely on some pedigree to boost their chances. But their anticipated results will all fall...
