Although Channing Tatum is considered one of the best-looking actors in modern Hollywood, there’s more to him than just his pleasant appearance.
After he struggled to find a job in his twenties, Tatum eventually stumbled into the acting world by chance, leading to a fruitful and prolific career.

Often typecast as the “dumb but good-looking” hero, Tatum has made major strides to strengthen his portfolio, extending his talent in both comedy and drama.

Channing Tatum, a natural athlete who found that college was not to his liking, moved to Tampa in his teens to work construction and found an outside gig as a male stripper at night. To Tatum’s credit, he never denied his stripping gig but instead turned it into artistic gold (years after he became an actor) with a hit franchise you may have heard about: “Magic Mike” (2012), “Magic Mike Xxl” (2015) and “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023).
After being discovered by a talent scout, Tatum started his career with small movie parts until he snagged the lead in “Step Up,” (2006), a successful dance/romance mash-up. Tatum’s looks and athleticism, as well as his dancing and acting skills attracted casting directors, who began to place him in bigger and bigger films.

Ethan Coen’s action-comedy Drive-Away Dolls leads a quiet weekend at the UK and Ireland box office, opening in 533 cinemas for Universal, as Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two continues to dominate with over £20m taken after two weeks on release.
The first solo narrative feature from one half of the Coen Brothers follows two lesbian roommates whose road trip quickly escalates to a crime caper when they find a valuable suitcase in the trunk. A notable ensemble cast, led by Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan, features appearances from Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal and Matt Damon.

It’s hard to put into words the kind of the disappointment that comes with realising that one of your favourite filmmakers has made a truly terrible movie. That realisation hit me approximately 10 minutes into Drive-Away Dolls, the new film by one half of acclaimed filmmaking duo The Coen Brothers.
Alongside his brother Joel, Ethan Coen has given us more than 4 decades of brilliant films ranging from quirky black comedies – A Serious Man, Hail, Caesar!, Inside Llewyn Davis – to beautifully devised crime capers – Blood Simple, No Country for Old Men and True Grit being just a few – but recently the prolific brothers took a break from working together. This resulted in Joel Coen’s multi-awarded nominated The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021, and the soon to be released chaotic lesbian sexploitation comedy Drive-Away Dolls from his brother Ethan.

Exclusive: David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) has signed on to star in Forelock, a dark comedy marking the solo feature directorial debut of Caleb Alexander Smith (NCIS).
The filmmaker also stars in the pic, which he scripted. Emily Swallow (The Mandalorian), Alimi Ballard (Queen of the South) and Chloe Farnworth (MaXXXine) round out the cast.
Forelock centers on a naive fitness enthusiast (Smith) seeking a fresh start in Los Angeles, watching as he collides with a Hollywood Boulevard grifter (Krumholtz) who exploits his uncanny resemblance to the world’s most famous superhero.
Pic is the first for Midnight Chimes, the film and TV production company founded last year by sports journalist and broadcaster Lindsay McCormick and Smith. McCormick is producing, with Russ Hammonds exec producing alongside Krumholtz. The film is co-financed by Midnight Chimes LLC, with production currently underway in Los Angeles.

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” will retain its holding as the top film on domestic charts this weekend, besting a trio of new releases in the manga adaptation “Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Hashira Training,” the faith-based Hilary Swank drama “Ordinary Angels” and Ethan Coen’s lesbian crime caper “Drive-Away Dolls.”
“One Love” added $3.7 million to its domestic haul on Friday, marking a modest 51% drop from its gross seven days ago. After opening on Valentine’s Day, the Bob Marley biopic has now earned a solid $61 million across its first 10 days in North American theaters. To compare against genre contemporaries, it’s pacing a bit ahead of the $50 million that “Rocketman” earned in 2019 across the same period of time, and a chunk behind 2022’s “Elvis,” which nabbed $66 million in 10 days. Worldwide, “One Love” has now surpassed $100 million.
Crunchyroll and Sony’s release of the new “Demon Slayer” entry looks to take silver.

The Coen brothers broke up four years ago, and it has taken them a while to come out with solo albums that define their identities. In 2021, Joel Coen directed “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was a dazzling black-and-white pastiche of a Shakespeare drama. It was well-done but felt like a one-off, a decision by Coen to serve the material. One year later, Ethan Coen came out with “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” a small-scale rock ‘n’ roll documentary that he made during the pandemic; it was a YouTube clip job, and on those terms expertly crafted — but even after Jerry Lee died (five months after the film’s Cannes premiere), it took ages for the film to be released.
Now, though, we finally have a Coen movie in which one of the brothers puts his solo stamp on filmmaking. “Drive-Away Dolls,” directed by Ethan Coen, is a crime-speckled road-trip...

He sings and he dances! But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t work. Timothée Chalamet had a three-month dance boot camp to prepare for “Wonka” — but luckily veteran choreographer Christopher Gattelli was there to guide him.
“The first lesson I had with him was actually in May of 2021. He was shooting ‘Bones and All’ at the time, and he came in with like this shocking red magenta hair and like super, super skinny Timmy and I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s not what I was expecting.'” But Gattelli pointed out that with Chalamet’s famous background at Laguardia High School, it wasn’t like starting from scratch. “And he has really great rhythm, so it wasn’t hard for him to pick it up.”
“Boot camp” sounds like Gattelli turned into the kind of strict dance instructor who terrifies his students, when in reality he’s warm and quick to laugh,...

Exclusive: WME has signed Fisher Stevens and his production company Highly Flammable, which he launched last spring alongside producers Maura Anderson and Zak Kilberg. They’ll rep the Academy Award-winning multi-hyphenate, going forward, across all scripted and documentary projects.
The move comes less than a week after Stevens’ Beckham docuseries was released on Netflix, debuting as the streamer’s most-watched English-language series of the week. The four-parter, on which he teamed with Oscar and Emmy-winning producer John Battsek (Searching for Sugar Man), tells the inside story of the global football star and cultural icon, offering unprecedented access not only to Beckham, but also to his wife Victoria, his family, his friends and his teammates.
Fisher’s scripted directing credits include the ex-convict drama Palmer, starring Justin Timberlake, which remains one of Apple TV+’s top 10 most popular films; the comedic thriller Stand Up Guys, starring Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin,...

Fair Play is a 2023 thriller film written and directed by Chloe Domont. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer.
“Fair Play” is a movie about ambition and how a professional relationship can affect a romantic relationship. In every place, there is an expression for this that ultimately recommends the same thing: not mixing love and work.
It’s difficult not to do so when, as in this case, both protagonists work ten hours a day and have no time for anything else but the company.
Plot
Emily and Luke are engaged, attractive, and have a promising future. There’s only one problem: they work at the same company, and company protocol doesn’t accept it. The problem arises when she gets promoted and he slowly starts losing his position in the complex corporate organization.

“Cobweb”, Kim Jee-woon's tenth feature film, marks the director's return to comedy for the first time since the beginning of his career. This satire on the film industry is a true cinematic layer cake: one can dig into it with hearty bites for the sheer pleasure of the visual feast, or one can peel it apart, layer by layer, to unveil a fascinating portrayal of the dark period of Korean history in the 1970s and a profound introspection by the director on creativity and the filmmaking profession.
Kim Jee-woon began his career in the 1990s as an actor and a theater director before directing his debut feature film, “The Quiet Family”, in 1998. He is part of a new generation of filmmakers, along with Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook, who no longer followed the traditional apprenticeship model of old studios, but are authentic cinephiles who came to cinema out of pure passion.

Something I think a lot of film and television fans forget is how everyone who helps create those films and shows are just going to their jobs like any other person. Just like everybody else, a work-life balance needs to be struck in order to live a fulfilling life. Not everything an actor, director, writer, or any other cinematic professional does is in service of the business. They go on vacations, go home to their parents' house for Thanksgiving, have relationships, and decide to have children.
Chances are good that someone in your office has been pregnant and only stopped coming in when they went into labor. In terms of the day-to-day work life of pregnant people, not much changes, aside from it maybe taking a little more effort to do things than usual. While Joel and Ethan Coen worked on two more features together after Inside Llewyn Davis, many (such as Mia Hansen-Løve) thought the story of an artist trying to find his way after the loss of his partner portended the eventual parting of ways for the brothers. Following Hail, Caesar! and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Joel Coen went solo directing The Tragedy of Macbeth while Ethan Coen helmed a Jerry Lee Lewis documentary and the forthcoming Drive-Away Dolls. Thankfully, it looks the brothers will now reunite for a new project.
As revealed in the current issue of Empire Magazine (via /Film), Ethan Coen said that he’s already working with Joel Coen on developing a new script. He also noted he very much hasn’t “gone solo” as his wife Tricia Cooke not only co-wrote the script for Drive-Away Dolls but also co-directed the film with him, though the Directors...

AppleTV+’s “Schmigadoon!” took a bold leap in its second season by transplanting its snarky, sympathetic central couple (Keegan Michael-Key and Cecily Strong) from the “Corn Puddin’” territory of musical theater’s golden age to the torn-stocking, cleaver-wielding recesses of the 1970s, with a little hippie free love thrown in for good measure.
Tony-winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli shepherded the series through the complete opposite of a sophomore slump, as “Schmicago!” (the new sort-of title card seen in the opening credits) gave us the old razzle-dazzle in eye-popping dance numbers even more effervescent than the first season’s candy-colored hoedowns (which Gattelli received an Emmy nom for). The affable, versatile choreographer chatted with TheWrap about getting Jane Krakowski back on a trapeze after 20 years, corralling children for big numbers and why primetime dance-competition shows are to thank for bringing the form roaring back to the small screen.

Beneath every placid surface and between each crashing wave, the movies’ most magical aquatic adventures portend the possibility of mermaids. Half-human, half-fish creatures swam onto the big screen at the turn of the 20th century, appearing in silent works such as Georges Méliès‘ 1904 short film “The Mermaid” and John G. Adolfi’s 1918 feature “Queen of the Sea” among others. The mythical archetype was subsequently reeled in as the effervescent love interest template for numerous ’30s and ’40s rom-coms, with the concept perfected in Irving Pichel’s well-loved talky “Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid,” starring Ann Blyth.
The siren songs characteristic of these mysterious ocean-dwellers even resulted in a string of MGM aqua musicals. Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” brought the mermaid musical to the animation-loving masses in 1989, winning Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea” at the Oscars. Years from now, when Alden Ehrenreich looks back on his Cocaine Bear experience, he’s not going to recall dancing with the title character first and foremost. He’s instead going to think of the two Cocaine Bear producers who surprised him during his first day on Elizabeth Banks’ rainy Ireland set. Those producers were Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who cast him years earlier as Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, a film they would ultimately depart in the later stages of principal photography.
“One of the most special days was my first day. [Phil] Lord and [Chris] Miller, who I’d worked with in the past [on Solo], were there,” Ehrenreich tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t know they were going to be there for my first scene in Ireland, and so they surprised me. We stood in this little corner in Ireland, with the rain coming down,...

Alden Ehrenreich broke through to the big time in 2018, landing the leading role in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Many critics and fans appreciated Ehrenreich’s heartfelt performance. And over the past several years, the talented young star has continuously opted for roles that challenge him creatively. Ehrenreich’s own story is one of pure luck. The up-and-coming actor was discovered by no less than famed director Steven Spielberg.

Making a film is like building a house; the script is the blueprint, the dailies are the materials, and then editing is the construction itself. Joel and Ethan Coen, who like their films to be exactly what they envisioned, understand this, and so they prefer to oversee every part of the process. They not only write and direct their films, they almost always edit them too using the pseudonym "Roderick Jaynes." Jonah Hill learned how exacting the Coens could be on the set of "Hail, Caesar!", where they were having no patience for ad-libbing or slip-ups.

“What I’m trying to find in the middle of my Venn diagram is authenticity, story and visual content and trying to serve all aspects of that for the design for the film, and try to find that sweet spot,” Beech declares about the tightrope between artifice and authenticity.

“Rarely as production designers do you get a chance to work on something that you feel like you have a grasp on the visuals of it,” admits Oscar-nominated production designer Jess Gonchor (“True Grit,” “Hail, Caesar!”) about designing the genre-bending comedy/drama “White Noise.” For our recent webchat he adds, “we have to become experts in things in 12, 14 weeks that we have no right being an expert on. So I felt like I was very well versed and sort of grounded in what a small liberal arts school in somewhere America would be like. So I did a lot from that inspiration and then I felt like it could be embellished quite a bit.” We talked with Gonchor as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022/2023 awards contenders. The ‘22/23 film awards cycle is so competitive that even below-the-line categories like Best Production Design are hard to call. Gold Derby’s projected slate of nominees has at least seven titles that would look like frontrunners in weaker years.
In first, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is positioned to repeat its predecessor’s victory and earn Hannah Beachler her second Oscar. “Babylon” is close behind. For his 1920s-set dark comedy, Damien Chazelle worked with Florencia Martin, whose recent credits include “Blonde” and “Licorice Pizza.” “Babylon” already seemed like a lock, and reactions to the movie’s unveiling in LA only solidify its status.

While it’s not the first time she’s played double duty (or beyond), having done so in Hail, Caesar!, Suspiria, and Okja, The Eternal Daughter marks the most emotionally profound and impressive use of multiple Tilda Swintons. Reteaming with Joanna Hogg once again, Swinton plays both daughter and mother in this captivating, haunting tale. Following stops at Venice, TIFF, NYFF, and BFI London, A24 will thankfully give it a release before the end of the year and now the first trailer has arrived.

“White Noise” might be the quietest high-profile Oscar hopeful in the last decade: The Netflix film from Noah Baumbach, a two-time Oscar-nominated screenwriter whose last film was nominated for best picture, boasts a cast that includes Adam Driver and a 89 score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, buzz is strangely muted for the first film ever to serve as the opening night movie of the Venice and New York Film Festivals. But why?
“Unfilmable” source material
That likely begins with the source material. Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s whimsical novel revolves around Jack Gladney (Driver), a professor of Hitler studies at the College-on-the-Hill. He lives with his wife Babette (Greta Gerwig) and their four children, but when an “Airborne Toxic Event” takes place in their community, the family must grapple with the universal mysteries of love and death.
During his introductory remarks at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on Sept.

Joel and Ethan Coen have not made a movie together since 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and the longtime collaborators seem to be taking their film careers in increasingly different directions.
Joel flew solo behind the camera for last year’s acclaimed Shakespeare drama “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” while Ethan Coen directed the new documentary “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind” and is gearing up to shoot a currently untitled lesbian road trip comedy that he wrote with his wife Tricia Cooke.
The two brothers have not announced any future projects, leading many to speculate about the details of their separation. But speaking to the Associated Press at the Cannes Film Festival, Ethan said the split was fueled by boredom and exhaustion more than animosity.
“Nothing happened, certainly nothing dramatic,” Coen said. “You start out when you’re a kid and you want to make a movie. Everything’s enthusiasm and gung-ho,...

The films competing for the 2022 Best Production Design Oscar are “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and “West Side Story.” Our odds currently indicate that “Dune” (16/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Nightmare Alley” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (9/2), and “The Power of the Dog” (9/2).
Six of the individual craftspeople in this lineup have been nominated before and four have won at least once. The only newcomers in the bunch are production designers Stefan Dechant (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) and Tamara Deverell (“Nightmare Alley”) and set decorators Amber Richards (“The Power of the Dog”) and Zsuzsanna Sipos (“Dune”).

Channing Tatum has a new movie in theaters. That in itself is something of an event, given that the last time the “Magic Mike” stripper extraordinaire starred in a somewhat prominent movie was “Logan Lucky” in 2017, which came one year after the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” For the most part, Tatum has been fairly quiet, doing only a handful of voiceover work and taking on some bit parts. With “Dog,” however, the movie star who broke out with “Step Up” and “Stop-Loss” before carrying tentpoles like “21 Jump Street” is showing a different impulse behind the camera.
Tatum co-directed “Dog” with his longtime writing and producing partner Reid Carolin, and the pair have made a surprisingly touching and thoughtful look at a broken man rediscovering himself through an unlikely canine connection. Tatum plays U.S. army ranger Briggs, who’s tasked with driving a military working dog from Washington to...

Together, the Coen Brothers have covered a lot of ground as collaborators and co-directors, from stark neo noir (“Blood Simple”) to bluegrass-tinged whimsy to mid-century Hollywood shenanigans. But an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” could only have happened once the pair put their partnership on hiatus, according to Joel Coen in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Coen’s interest in “Macbeth” was first piqued when his wife, Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand, asked him to consider directing her in the play as Lady Macbeth. He ended up not helming that production at Berkeley Rep, which starred McDormand and “Games of Thrones” alum Conleth Hill in 2016. But the seed had been planted for Coen, who began contemplating the story of a murderous couple in cinematic terms.
That plan became clearer after 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” the last film on which the Coens shared a directing credit.

“I had never done a part two, or a sequel of anything,” confesses production designer Jess Gonchor. He designed the sets in “A Quiet Place Part II” despite not having worked on the first film. Though he quickly discovered that the characters left the environment of the original movie towards the beginning of the sequel and entered into new territory. So Gonchor “saw a chance to do different things with the designs.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Both Gonchor and writer/director John Krasinski have lived in New York, so using Buffalo, NY as a filming location provided lots of inspiration. Gonchor describes it as one “of those steel, mine towns.” They were even able to shoot inside of an old steel mill in the area.

The Coen Brothers are often cagey about the meaning of their films, and in the case of "Barton Fink" — their uncategorizable 1991 film starring John Turturro and John Goodman — perhaps there is no grand unifying message to it. That hasn't stopped critics and academics from analyzing the movie to death, and there are now long Wikipedia sections about its symbolism and themes.
While the Coens may be a national treasure, U.S. critics aren't the only ones who have spent time analyzing "Barton Fink" and developing pet theories about it. The press tour for the Coens' 2016 comedy, "Hail, Caesar!" came 25 years after "Barton Fink," and...

Exclusive: Brandon Jay McLaren (Turner & Hooch) DeVaughn Nixon (Prom) and Tiffany Lonsdale (Siren) are set for heavily recurring roles opposite Damson Idris in the upcoming fifth season of FX drama Snowfall. The series hails from the late Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director John Singleton & Eric Amadio and Dave Andron.
In the most recent fourth season, business is booming. It’s January 1, 1985. Ronald Reagan has won his re-election campaign, proclaiming it is “morning again in America,” but in South Central, Los Angeles, it feels more like the sun is getting low. The demand for crack cocaine is high, and while our crew of dealers led by Franklin Saint (Idris) are benefitting greatly from the rising tide of addiction, they are also starting to become aware of the damage the drug is doing to the people and to the place they love.
McLaren will play Buckley, a detective with the Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums (C.R.A.S.H.) Unit.
