Update 02.23.15:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed only 9 out of the 24 categories.
Previous 02.22.15:
Here’s an at-a-glance look at my picks for tonight’s Academy Awards — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. (I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.)
Also noted are the two films — The Salt of the Earth (a documentary nominee) and Wild Tales (a foreign-language nominee) — that I haven’t been able to see.
I suspect I won’t be able to make it through the ceremony...

The 2015 Oscars are in the books and it was Birdman taking home four awards including the coveted Best Picture along with a Best Director win for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu as well as an Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki) win. But Birdman wasn't the only film to take home four Oscars as The Grand Budapest Hotel had a small bit of domination in the below-the-line categories winning for Production Design, Costumes, Makeup & Hairstyling and Original Score (Alexandre Desplat). The only other multiple award winner was Whiplash, which took home Best Supporting Actor (J.K. Simmons), Best Film Editing and Sound Mixing. Otherwise, it was singles across the board and while there were a few interesting wins below the line, the top awards went pretty much by the books. Patricia Arquette took home Boyhood's only Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) won Best Actor over...

The 2015 Academy Awards have (finally) arrived, and we can't wait to see what happens.
With huge international stars, like Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep, Eddie Redmayne, and Michael Keaton up for Oscars, and some big movies, like "Boyhood," "Whiplash," "The Imitation Game," "Birdman," and "American Sniper," vying for the top prize, this year's ceremony is as competitive as ever.
Throughout the night, we'll be watching and updating the list below, so come back to see who won (and who didn't) as Hollywood's best and brightest take home the awards.

Take a sigh of relief, the Oscars are finally upon us. How many months will we squeeze out of 2015 before pundits start incessantly chattering about Awards Season again?
With any luck, 2016 will not be as contentious and as close of a race for Best Picture as it was this year. It has created a lot of excitement and confidence that the winner will be a strong one, but it has also created a lot of controversy and bile and disappointment.
My predictions for 2015 reflect the consensus of what will happen, not what should. But then with this year, anything can happen.
Best Picture
American Sniper Birdman Boyhood The Imitation Game The Grand Budapest Hotel Selma The Theory of Everything Whiplash
After almost near sweeps of critic prizes and the dominant film on Best of the Year lists by a wide margin, Boyhood may very well lose the Oscar for Best Picture on Sunday night.

At London’s Royal Opera House, Host Stephen Fry introduced the 68th Ee BAFTAs by making a reference to the night’s weather, which for the first time in many years, didn’t involve rain.
Making his entrance to “Uptown Funk”, Fry described the BAFTAs as “that most glorious of occasions when the heavens open and the great and the good of the industry rain down upon us,” adding: “It may be dry outside but in here it’s simply pissing down with stars.”
Those stars included David Beckham, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke, Julie Walters, Kristin Scott Thomas, Noomi Rapace, Jesse Eisenberg, Ralph Fiennes and surprise guest Tom Cruise, who handed out the Best Film prize.

The 2015 BAFTA Awards have been revealed and if you're of the group that believes they hold any kind of influence over the Oscars or serve as any kind of predictor, well, you may be moving Boyhood back to the top line of your Best Picture and Director predictions as Richard Linklater's twelve-year project took home three wins including Best Picture, Director and Supporting Actress, though it was The Grand Budapest Hotel, which lead the nomination field with 11 noms, that lead all winners taking home five awards, all below the line outside of the win for Best Original Screenplay. Personally I'm not ready to move Birdman below Boyhood in either Picture or Director as it only took home one award, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, though one interesting category to keep an eye on is Best Actor at the Oscars as the precursors suggest it will be Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything...

Here are the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards. I found there to be a couple of surprises this morning such as The Lego Movie not getting a nomination for Best Animated Feature category. Also, the Best Picture category has just 8 titles, this is the first time the category has had less than 9 nominees since its expansion a few years ago; Gone Girl couldn’t have fit in there? I was also surprised to see Jake Gyllenhaal left out of the Best Actor list for his work in Nightcrawler.
The much deserved Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the pack with 9 nominations each, followed by The Imitation Game which landed 8. My favorite movie of the year, Boyhood, came away with 6 nominations.
The Oscars will be air live on ABC Sunday, February 22nd.

The 2015 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and while I've already furnished a few thoughts on the omissions and surprises right here I figured we would go down the line and see what stands out. Who and what films were "snubbed", what are the biggest "surprises" and so on and so forth. Rage is sure to follow in the comments and what better time than now to get it all off your chest as we lead up to the 87th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, February 22c Let's take a look and see what the verdict is on these nominations, which I will ask you to vote on at the bottom of this post. Best Picture No real surprises here as I had all eight of these films getting a nomination for Best Picture. The only difference between this list and mine, however, was I had Gone Girl getting a nomination,...

This morning brought the 2015 Oscar nominations announced by directors Alfonso Cuar?n (Gravity) and J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens), actor Chris Pine and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. At first glance, the first things I notice are no nominations for Selma in Director or Actor and no The Lego Movie in Best Animated Feature. Jennifer Aniston (Cake) missed out on a nomination as Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night) took that fifth and final slot as the most likely replacement. Continuing on the actress front, or Supporting Actress in this case, Rene Russo (Nightcrawler) did not land a nomination as many thought she might and no, it wasn't Jessica Chastain (A Most Violent Year) as many others thought it may be. It was Laura Dern (Wild) taking that final slot and a bit of a wasted nomination if you ask me. In the Best Actor...

The 87th Annual Academy Award nominations have been announced with both "Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" leading the pack with nine nominations each.
Also faring well were "The Imitation Game" with eight; "American Sniper" and "Boyhood" with six; "The Theory of Everything," "Foxcatcher," "Interstellar" and "Whiplash" with five; "Mr. Turner" with four; and "Unbroken," "Into the Woods" and "Wild" with three.
The surprises here weren't so much in the inclusions but rather the snubs. The most notable snubs were in the acting categories including Jake Gyllenhaal in "Nightcrawler," Ralph Fiennes in "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay in "Selma". Also unexpected? "The Lego Movie" is Not nominated for Best Animated Feature, "Life Itself" isn't up for Best Documentary.

Boyhood, Birdman, The Imitation Game, American Sniper and more: it's the Oscar nominations...
Yep, we're at that time of the year again, with Hollywood deep in the midst of one of its favourite games: giving out gongs. Without further ado, then, here's the list of nominations for 2015's Oscars. The Lego Movie seems to be the biggest snub of the lot in there...

Weeks of wild speculation, informed theorizing, splashy profile pieces, lunches where movie stars awkwardly make conversation with bloggers and occasionally aimless prognostication finally come down to this one morning: the morning where the nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards are announced. The big show, hosted by the endlessly delightful Neil Patrick Harris, doesn't air until February 22nd. But this morning is when the hand wringing really begins in earnest.
There are a bunch of really handsome, talented people that are going to have a really good morning and even more that are going to be horribly disappointed (luckily they have the whole "handsome and talented" thing to lessen the blow). This has been one of the more unpredictable Oscar seasons in recent memory, without clear frontrunners or surefire favorites. So strap in -- this is going to be a wild morning!

BAFTA, the British Oscars, has revealed the nominations for their annual awards and Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" led with 11 nominations including Best Picture where it will duke it out with "Birdman," "Boyhood," "The Imitation Game," and "The Theory of Everything" for the trophy.
But, Ava DuVernay's "Selma" and Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" were completely ignored!
Some surprising twists -- Steve Carell, noted as Best Actor for "Foxcatcher" has been relegated to the Best Supporting Actor category. And I'm happy to report that the British Academy voters gave love to "Nightcrawler" for Best Actor (Jake Gyllenhaal), Original Screenplay (Dan Gilroy), Editing (John Gilroy), and my "it's-about-time-they-honor-her" rant, Rene Russo for Best Supporting Actress!
We'll find out the winners on Sunday, February 8th. The BAFTA Awards will be broadcast on BBC One w;ith Stephen Fry performing the hosting honors.

Last night the 2015 BAFTA award nominations were announced with The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the field with 11 nominations and Birdman and The Theory of Everything not too far behind with ten nominations each. But as much as the talk will be of who got nominated, the fact Ava DuVernay's Selma went home without a single nomination will certainly have people wondering about its Oscar chances. Well, don't worry, it's getting nominated, it just won't win. However, the one film that does seem to be truly in trouble (despite Angelina Jolie meeting the Pope) is Unbroken, which also didn't receive a single nomination. Just yesterday I moved Unbroken out of the list of my Best Picture predictions and it seems that may have been the right move. Other intriguing developments include no nomination for The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum. The film earned nine nominations, but director wasn't one of them,...

Ahead of the 72nd annual Golden Globes, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 68th British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs) on Friday morning. Leading the pack is The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations.
The recognition for Wes Anderson’s comedy comes as a surprise since the film has only managed to pick up a handful of nominations in the U.S., including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Director at the Golden Globes, which airs live on Sunday, Jan. 11.

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

Review in a Hurry: In the last few days before an asteroid is scheduled to hit the Earth and destroy all life, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley—having both recently broken up with significant others—go on a road trip together. You can probably guess what happens. It can be quite funny when they encounter crazies, but the earnest parts are a killer, and may elicit more groans than laughs overall. The Bigger Picture: The movie opens with a radio broadcast informing us that our last hope, a space shuttle named Deliverance, has failed in its mission to stop the giant space rock. That shuttle name gives you an idea of the sense of humor here: yes, it was meant to "deliver" humanity, but in point of fact it ended...

Review in a Hurry: An unnecessary sequel to the overrated 2006 hit, HF2 again shows there's no problem you can't tap-dance your way out of. Despite some amazing animation and cool song mash-ups, this flat-footed follow-up is as messy and overcrowded as, well, an island packed with poopy penguins. The Bigger Picture: Enviro-friendly messages abound in this Antarctic adventure, from the evils of oil spills to global warming and even to eating meat. But as HF2 strives to moralize about our connectivity to all living things, the narrative becomes frustratingly disjointed. Hoofing hero Mambo (Elijah Wood) is back—this time as an adult with a kid of his own, Erik (Ava Acres). Reluctant to boogie-oogie-oogie...

Review in a Hurry: Steve Carell is a sad sack suburbanite. Ryan Gosling an über-cool urbanite. And both extremes find themselves in a romantic comedy about finding one's soul mate. Crazy, Stupid, Love supplies plenty of laughs but truly impresses in the low-key moments, revealing genuine warmth for its characters. That they look like Emma Stone, Julianne Moore and Kevin Bacon is just an added bonus. The Bigger Picture: Fortysomething Cal (Carell) has bailed on his life. After his spouse of 25 years (Moore) tells him she wants a divorce—and that she slept with another man (Bacon)—Cal literally falls out of a moving vehicle. So he starts hanging out at a singles bar where he meets Jacob...

Review in a Hurry: Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis prove that insanely attractive twentysomethings can have it all! Including each other! And a pretty funny movie! Obvious? Maybe, but just a few months ago the same premise was an epic fail for Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. The Bigger Picture: Funny dialogue helps. A strong supporting cast, including an inspired Woody Harrelson, helps too. J.T. and Kunis have great chemistry—both between the sheets and out of them—playing too smart for their own good types who spend their time deconstructing romantic comedies. But can the script stay formula-free? Nah, but that's Ok. New York headhunter Jamie (Kunis) and L.A. dotcom wunderkind Dylan...

Review in a Hurry: Gaylord "Greg" Focker has survived meeting his girlfriend's parents, his parents meeting Her parents, and now, being a parent in front of the parents. If this sounds repetitive...well, you have a pretty good idea of what it's like to see this re-rematch between Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. The Bigger Picture: Meet the Parents made beaucoup bucks by pitting De Niro's trademark frown-sneer against Stiller's wide-eyed stammer. While many enjoyed Greg's mockery at the hands of papa Jack, Meet the Fockers improved on the formula as Jack's outlandish suspicions and sabotage finally met its match in the face of Greg's freewheeling hippie parents, Bernie and Roz (Dustin Hoffman...

Review in a Hurry: Paul Rudd and Steve Carell reteam for their third outing (40 Year Old Virgin, Anchorman), a remake of the French farce The Dinner Game, about a smart guy who gets in over his head with a lovable idiot. Alas, something got lost in the translation. The American version is too obvious and never really gets its hands dirty with a premise that's mean-spirited to begin with. The Bigger Picture: While attempting to sweet-talk his girlfriend into marriage, Barry (Rudd) gets pressured by his boss to bring a special guest to a dinner party. The catch is that said guest has to be the biggest buffoon he can find. Barry wants to impress his boss, but is he willing to exploit the likable and clueless Tim...

Review in a Hurry: A self-proclaimed supervillain plots to steal the moon but then encounters an even greater challenge: caring for three adorable orphan girls. You gotta watch out for those cookie-selling kiddies—they'll nab your money and your heart, as does this gleefully silly animated adventure. The Bigger Picture: It's a well-worn tale: Irresistible moppets turn a crusty crank's heart to mush and awaken the nurturing dad within. But delightful Despicable freshens this stale family formula with endearing characters, vivid visuals and Looney Tunes-style lunacy. In a setup reminiscent of Spy vs. Spy, grinchy Gru (Steve Carell)—a Slavic-accented meanie wielding a wicked freeze...

Review in a Hurry: We all love Tina Fey and Steve Carell, don't we? So why doesn't Hollywood love them, too? At least enough to give them a script worthy of their talents? This halfassed (but star-studded) farce from hacktacular director Shawn Levy, in which the comics play harried marrieds on a mistaken-identity run from the mob, is marginally better than the likes of Evan Almighty and Get Smart. But not by much. The Bigger Picture: It's commonplace nowadays to dis director Chris Columbus (Home Alone) for being a generic sentimentalist, but let it be said that he set the template for what Date Night is trying to do in his directorial debut, Adventures in Babysitting. Substantially mocked in its day, that movie has...

Review in a Hurry: In the tradition of old-school fairy tales, 9 is grim! Elijah Wood and Jennifer Connelly do some tip-top voice work in an impressive and gothic Tim Burton collaboration about nine vulnerable creatures in a terrifying world, but they've often overwhelmed by the Message. The Bigger Picture: This is a flawed gem. The script is bland with an amateur political message tacked onto it, but 9 is still something to marvel at. Animator Shane Acker's sinewy creatures, voracious metallic monsters, and scorched planet web together to create stunning visuals and a haunting story. See, nine tiny puppets spun from burlap with thimbles for eyes and fountain pen tips for fingers have to survive in the...

Review in a Hurry: When a beautiful businesswoman breezes into town, a local motel owner's creepy son develops a fixation on her and will go to any length to have her. Another Psycho remake? Not quite—this is actually a slightly unsettling romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn. The Bigger Picture: Let's say you're a successful career woman who's mildly unhappy with her life. You're single, and two guys come along. One is a sexy retired rock star (Woody Harrelson) who offers to give you all the money you need to start your dream project. The other is a clingy dork who lives rent-free with his parents and can barely carry on a conversation. Which one do you pick? Wrong. Try...
