- TriviaFionnula Flanagan is an accomplished violinist in real life, and performed her own viola playing at the ship's concert. Fionnula Flanagan learned to play the viola while rehearsing this scene, spending a lot of time learning those six to eight bars of music, in order to make it convincing for the camera.
- GoofsWhen Data enters sickbay, he is carrying his violin and bow, as if he had walked to sickbay directly from the recital in Ten Forward, yet, when he is told to report to the transporter room because of an emergency on the planet, Dr. Pran Tainer has just been injured on the planet's surface. The time line makes no sense; both Dr. Pran Tainer and his wife, Dr. Juliana Tainer, have been present at Data's recital. How could the male Dr. Tainer have had time to transport to the planet's surface and begin work? And why isn't the female Dr. Tainer still wearing the outfit she had worn at the recital?

Enjoyable Data episode
Data meets his mother.
This is an enjoyable episode with some decent character exploration of Data and his backstory.
The plot flits between the relationship scenes between Data and Tainer and the sci-fi plot involving Atrea IV. Each thread comes together nicely for a decent twist.
Most episodes where Brent Spiner leads the way are good and this one is no different. Plus there is a decent guest performance from a grey (old lady) wig donned Fionnula Flanagan. The exchanges between them are nice and what makes it all worthwhile is the plot reveal.
The final dilemma is a good one and gives Data the opportunity to show once more how he is the character on Star Trek with the most humanity.
