Harlots (2017-2019)
One of the aspects of life that many shows only briefly touch on is the way aristocrats treated the prostitutes they visited. When it debuted in 2006, Showtime's "Dexter" was a pay cable exclusive. The darkly comic show about a Florida blood spatter analyst who doubled as a serial killer was part of Showtime's push towards HBO-level original programming, a wave of great (or at least initially great) content that also included Jenji Kohen's suburban drug dealer dramedy "Weeds," the smutty historical drama "The Tudors," and controversial lesbian soap "The L Word."
Fast forward nearly two decades, and Showtime looks a lot different. The streamer is now bundled in with Paramount+, and has been awkwardly retitled Paramount+ with Showtime. The last great Showtime hit bearing the premium channel's original name was "Yellowjackets," the great cannibal high schooler series that will be back for its third season. Showtime may have gone through tons of changes in recent years, but if you're just now getting on board with "Dexter," there's no better time: the show...

It’s easy to appreciate the investment of time and effort that go into constructing any period piece, a balancing act between capturing the atmosphere of a bygone age and finding a middle ground equally satisfying to both the casual viewer and the history buff. And so, brimming with more than a handful of nods to spiritual siblings “The Tudors” and “The Favourite” both in tone and ambiance, the new Starz limited series “Mary & George” finds the right mix and a seat at the table with relative ease.

Aside from the Meiji Restoration Period, which saw the Empire rise to power by shaking off its symbolical garb and take the Land of the Rising Sun to great heights of modernization, the Edo Period was the most pivotal era in the history of Japan. The era not only marked the end of the cataclysmic, war-torn Sengoku period and unified the nation under a new shogunate, it also saw the beginning of an age of peace, creativity, and refinement, which provided the country with much-needed stability, allowing it to keep sporadic attempts by European colonizers to weaken the state at bay. However, the foundation of any form of longstanding peace is built upon sacrifices, conspiracies, strategies, and bloodshed, and the Edo period was no exception in that regard. Former Pow and prolific writer James Clavell’s bestselling historical novel Shogun is a meticulous assessment of that foundation that strengthened Japan,...

But while fans are used to mostly seeing him in heroic roles, recent rumors swirling around are suggesting that Cavill just may step into the shoes of Fantastic Four saga’s merciless villain, Doctor Doom. Though it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it would be no harm to discuss the possible merits of having Henry Cavill as the Marvel supervillain, would it?

Argylle follows a spy novelist who finds herself in the middle of a murder and espionage after she realizes that her new spy novel mirrors real-world events. Henry Cavill might be a hunk with the literal body of a Greek God and handsome features that make him the most perfect match for DC’s fan-favorite superhero, Superman, but that isn’t quite the place where most of his interest lies in. In fact, if anything, he doesn’t even consider the role of Superman or even that of the spy he recently played in Argylle to be “the greatest privilege” of his career.
Henry Cavill in The Tudors
Instead of all these action roles related to superheroes and spies — all of which he has notably performed some of his most impressive feats of all time — Henry Cavill is more indebted to something else when it comes to the great privileges of his professional career; something that many fans would be unable to decipher if they’re not avid gaming nerds like the Man of Steel star.

With growing popularity and influence in the spy/action genre, there are several Henry Cavill movies you probably forgot the actor starred in. The British actor is currently at the peak of his career, with several calls for him to be cast as the new James Bond. Cavill reportedly got passed over the last time for fellow English actor Daniel Craig because of his young age. However, the silver lining of the rejection opened up opportunities to play Superman (arguably the next best portrayal since Christopher Reeves). Henry Cavill is also known for roles like Charles Brandon in The Tudors (2007-2010),...

“The Gilded Age,” Julian Fellowes’ critically lauded follow-up to “Downton Abbey,” has returned for a second season on HBO. Although “The Gilded Age” slightly alters the formula that made “Downton Abbey” so popular, swapping out turn-of-the-century England for a rapidly developing America in the late 1800s, it takes place just a few decades before its predecessor. Does that just reflect Fellowes’ fascination with a particular period? Or should we take it as a sign from a master of the genre that this is the ideal setting for a period piece TV show?

Historical fiction shows based on characters who lived centuries ago are always intriguing to watch. The history presented in the form of a television show allows us to understand the nuances of those real-life people who carried out good and bad acts for the sake of power and nothing else. It also helps us to see them from a gray perspective, for each of them had their own intentions and journeys to justify their acts. The Tudors, The Serpent Queen, Rome, Vikings, Downton Abbey, and Marco Polo are names of some of the many shows in this genre. Domina is about the Roman Dictator Augustus’ wife, Livia, who managed to stay in power for years even though she could not give him an heir, which was crucial for any family ruling a vast empire.

Over the decades, viewers have enjoyed many historical-fiction shows, as it is not just a great way to learn about the subject matter, but the indulgence factor works well in such shows. There is drama, treachery, lust, love, killing, and, most of all, historical accuracy as well. Vikings, Marco Polo, The Tudors, Reign, Downton Abbey, Versailles, and Barbarians are some examples of popular television shows in the historical fiction genre, and all of them have one thing in common: a focus on the politics and the drama of the era. Domina, created and written by Simon Burke for Sky Atlantic (UK and Italy), is about the infamous Roman Empire, which in its early turbulent period was ruled by Augustus Caesar and his wife Livia Drusilla, the protagonist of this show. The power of this woman made sure she and her husband would remain undefeated for a long time.

HBO’s potential deal to license a slew of library titles to rival Netflix, as revealed by Deadline, was met with derision by some, another example of Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav selling off the crown jewels to hit his savings targets.
However, industry experts have urged that the move could actually open the door to streaming profitability and increase residuals for creatives, leading to a larger digital détente.
Talk of such a move was a surprise, largely given the frostiness between the two rivals, which have been battling it out on the talent and awards front for the last few years, but optics aside, a deal, which was described as “groundbreaking” by one source, could be good for consumers and the town.

There have been any number of films about Henry VIII and how the English king’s various wives kept losing their heads, but precious few have focused on the one queen who managed to outlive him; Katherine Parr has been a bit player in the likes of 1953’s “Young Bess”, but Karim Aïnouz’s “Firebrand” puts this radically progressive woman of the people at the center of the story in a way that has never been done before.

Austin Butler’s turn as Elvis in Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic, another Oscar-nominated performance that failed to win over the U.S. Academy, wowed IFTA voters, who gave the young American the award for the best international actor. Similarily, Cate Blanchett’s Oscar-nominated best actress turn in Tár was IFTA’s pick for its best international actress honor.
But IFTA voters agreed with the American Academy on Oscar winner All Quiet on the Western Front,...
