Throughout the years, George Clooney and Brad Pitt have teamed up multiple times – not just on Ocean’s Eleven (and the subsequent Twelve and Thirteen), but also on the Coen Brothers’ Burn After Reading. And now, 16 years after that comedic shaggy-dog tale, the duo is back on screen together, teaming up in Jon Watts’ upcoming comedy-thriller Wolfs. That’s a proper movie-movie-star pairing, combining to lead Watts’ return to more grounded territory after helming Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home; his latest film sees Clooney and Pitt play solitary crime scene fixers, who suddenly find themselves having to work together after both being called to clean up the same mess. Watch the trailer here:
Wolfs (it’s going to take a few goes to get used to how that title sounds) looks to be that all-too-rare thing – a film-star-led original studio picture, not originating from any kind of source material.

In addition to Pitt and Clooney, the cast also includes Austin Abrams, Amy Ryan and Poorna Jagannathan.
Pitt and Clooney also serve as producers on the film for their respective Plan B Productions and Smokehouse Pictures banners. Apple is the third studio, having won a bidding war against Sony, Lionsgate and Netflix for the movie package. Sony Pictures Releasing is distributing the film.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt aren’t exactly team players in the first trailer for their new comedic thriller, Wolfs.
Sony Pictures is set to release Jon Watts’ movie in theaters Sept. 20. Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams and Poorna Jagannathan round out the cast in the feature that hails from Apple Studios and centers on two lone-wolf professional fixers hired to do the same job.
Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home) wrote and directed Wolfs. Clooney and Grant Heslov produce for Smokehouse Pictures, while Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner produce for Plan B Entertainment. Watts and Dianne McGunigle are also producers.
In the trailer, released Wednesday, Clooney, a professional fixer, is hired to cover up a crime.

The fix is in, and it’s lowkey hilarious. For the first time in 15 years, George Clooney and Brad Pitt are together again for the upcoming thriller Wolfs. The film reuintes Clooney and Pitt as rival fixers called into to dispose of a corpse by their shadowy employer, only for the corpse to be far from dead, and in the possession of a massive amount of drugs. Going by the teaser trailer, the film has serious buddy-comedy vibes, mixed with a bit of gunplay and action. With a September 20th release date, a debut at one of the fall film festivals would make sense, with TIFF an obvious choice for that looks to be a star-studded crowdpleaser. Indeed, seeing Clooney and Pitt mixing it up again is fantastic.

Oscar winner J.K. Simmons made his career on television, appearing in Law & Order and Oz, and while he did play J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007), it wasn’t until Juno (2007) that he became a brand name, later appearing in Burn After Reading (2008), La La Land (2016), Justice League (2017), Being the Ricardos (2021), and other films. But, it was 2014’s Whiplash that earned him his first Oscar and earned him unanimous praise for his portrayal of the sadistic music instructor Terence Fletcher.

Fizzy comedy-thriller Drive-Away Dolls has been turned into a political bellwether – but why are we still seeing sex and inclusivity as controversial?
Is Drive-Away Dolls a political film?
On the surface, it tries very hard not to be. Set in 1999, the film finds two lesbian best friends embarking on a road trip pursued by hapless criminals and wall-mounted dildos. The opening scene sees a character stabbed in the neck with a corkscrew; later, in the words of the BBFC, “a woman appears to masturbate a man in order to take a plaster cast mould of his penis”. A chirpy, air-headed slice of east coast Americana, politics seems to be the last thing Drive-Away Dolls is thinking about.
But ask the film’s director, Ethan Coen, and the answer is more complex than you might expect.

A road trip. A mix-up. A fast-talking hero, prone to tossing off bewilderingly verbose sentences. Some criminals who run the gamut from eccentric to psychotic to painfully inept. (Sometimes, they’re all three at once.) Dangerously sudden violence. Dangerously dark humor. Dangerously outrageous hairdos. The feeling that you’re watching a vintage film noir story run through a Looney Tunes filter. You are in the presence of a Coen brothers movie — whaddaya need, a road map?!

The kind of movie made to stumble upon surfing cable at 2 am in a half-awake, half-intoxicated stupor, Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls aims for a lower artistic bar than anything the director (and certainly his brother) has previously approached, which accounts for much of its charm. Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke first completed the script some two decades ago––titled Drive-Away Dykes both then and now, if one goes by the end credits––and the film’s B-movie, pleasure-first appeal lies in the feeling that they simply dusted off a copy and immediately embarked on production. A slapdash narrative populated with eminently likable characters best described as joke-delivering caricatures, this marvelously queer road-trip comedy caper is a fleet-footed ride designed to pack in as much sex, violence, and psychedelic mind trips as an 84-minute runtime will allow.

What looks like diamonds but on closer inspection turns out to be little more than reams of cheap polyester? Why, argyle, of course — that preppy pattern found on socks and sweaters, and an apt name for the latest kooky spy caper from Matthew Vaughn. The erstwhile “Kick-Ass” director has been trapped in “Kingsman” mode for so long (going on a decade now) that it feels like we’ve lost him to that kind of live-action cartoon forever, cramming Gen Z James Bond riffs with disco music and outrageous greenscreen shenanigans.
“Argylle” boasts an entirely new set of characters, but sticks to Vaughn’s CG-exaggerated aesthetic as hacky spy novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) gets pulled into a scheme nearly identical to the one she described in her bestselling series of books. She invented a character called Agent Argylle who’s uncovered a secret division of rogue agents, creatively named the Division.

George Clooney refuses to be unpleasant when directing films. The 62-year-old star has helmed the sports drama 'The Boys in the Boat' and has learned from bad experiences on past film sets in terms of treatment of the cast and crew.George told Total Film magazine: "Well, I've been on sets with miserable directors. I've been on sets with directors who yell and scream. To me, it doesn't matter what the product is at that point."This is a job where there's 300 people on the set trying to do the best they can. There is no reason and no purpose for people being treated badly. I hate it, and I won't do it."I've had directors who I like personally, but I know them reputationally, and within the last few months they've come to me and said, 'When are we going to work together?'"And I go,...

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

Robert Downey Jr. has quickly become the Oscars frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor for his transformative turn in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” This Universal blockbuster chronicles how Cillian Murphy‘s titular scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer created the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt features as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, while Downey Jr. portrays his political foe Lewis Strauss. Third time should prove to be the charm for this charmer. That got us thinking about his first two Oscar races.
Downey Jr. was first nominated in 1993 for Best Actor for “Chaplin.” Another biopic, he played the titular role of the cinematic legend Charlie Chaplin. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the film recounts Chaplin’s incredible life and career from his poverty-stricken childhood to his worldwide acclaim. Downey Jr. turned in a pitch-perfect performance, nailing the accent, mannerisms, and expressions of the great man and receiving acclaim of his own along the way.

Brad Pitt is as pure a movie star as they come, but if anything a large swath of his work is often overlooked. To celebrate the Missourian’s 60th birthday, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman and Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis look at the 20 best roles of Pitt’s career.
From “Interview With The Vampire” to “Fight Club” Pitt has morphed into hero, villain and even the (beloved) simpleminded trainer Chad Feldheimer for the Coen Brothers film “Burn After Reading.”
Just a few years shy of his best actor win for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” his portrayal of Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino’s film is widely considered the high-water mark of his career. But it’s certainly not the first film to grant him award’s buzz. “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Burn After Reading,” “Moneyball” all landed him past nods for his acting as...

Based on the best-selling novel by Bonnie Garmus, “Lessons in Chemistry” combines science and cooking in a great experiment. Larson also executive produced the Apple TV+ drama series, whose showrunner is Lee Eisenberg. Eight episodes unfold to tell the emotional and unexpected story of Elizabeth Zott, a Hastings lab technician (and really PhD-level chemist) who transforms into a television celebrity cook.
The first two episodes landed Friday, October 13, and the show will end right before Thanksgiving, an appropriate holiday for cooking! New episodes will be released weekly on Fridays at midnight, Pacific time. Alongside Larson, the starring cast includes Lewis Pullman, Stephanie Koenig, Aja Naomi King, Kevin Sussman and more stars throughout the season.

If Harry Styles had actually hacked a gob of spit in Chris Pine’s lap, it may have been because he had recently watched the fellow actor’s feature directorial debut: the paranoid noir satire “Poolman.” It’s a film so abysmal in its writing and assembly that there were numerous walkouts during its premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF 2023 has played host to more actor-turned-directors than usual — Michael Keaton, Anna Kendrick, Viggo Mortensen, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Finn Wolfhard, to name a few — and whether it’s a coincidence, or an attempt to get around the ongoing SAG strikes by having celebrity directors show face, programming “Poolman” in any capacity feels like a severe ethical breach.
There’s little point in singling out any one scene or idea. In isolation, nothing in “Poolman” is quite so offensive as to warrant outright derision on its own,...

Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby drew from the well of modern cringe comedies to tell its story of a pressure cooker of a shiva. That setting lent the film authenticity, keeping it firmly grounded in a recognizable reality. So it’s all the more surprising that Seligman’s follow-up, Bottoms, is a far more silly, over-the-top affair, but the film’s unique blend of deadpan and absurdist humor, and its tendency to occasionally push the boundaries of good taste, shows that Seligman is equally comfortable working at the opposite end of the comic spectrum.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Sad Puppy-Seeing Soccer Himbo Seeks Refugee Son
For lovers of soccer and movies about hot guys being dumb, it’s been the highest of highs and the lowest of lows lately.
“Barbie” became a bona fide cultural phenomenon by giving us something we never knew we needed: Ryan Gosling running around as a sexy Beach professional who does a shockingly decent Rob Thomas impression despite having nothing going on behind his eyes. Double Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins is celebrating the latest laurel in his distinguished career: an Emmy nomination for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. He plays the bewildered father of the titular real life serial killer in the Netflix series co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.

On paper, the concept of Maggie Moore(s), which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is incredibly fascinating: a darkly comedic murder mystery about a bumbling police chief (Jon Hamm) and his wisecracking deputy (Nick Mohammed) trying to solve the mystery involving the deaths of two women who have the same name and were killed around the same time. Add in the fact that it is loosely based on a true story, and you have all the proper ingredients to make the next Coen Brothers masterpiece, and it seems like the film’s director, John Slattery, thought so as well as he takes the Coen Brothers influence and runs with it. I just wished that he ran in a different direction though because the end result is a tonally dissonant, poorly shot and overall underwhelming film.

A source told the publication, “George has been giving Brad romance advice in his new relationship with Ines and George loves that Brad found someone to genuinely care for.

It’s almost the end of another year…another grueling, relentless, shuffle around the pitiless sun. But before that: more content! HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2022 is filled with a handful of exciting original TV series.
December 2022 truly is TV’s time to shine on HBO Max. Things get started on day one with the release of Gossip Girl season 2 (Dec. 1). That will be followed by His Dark Materials on Dec. 5. Adapting The Amber Spyglass, this season promises to be the most action-packed yet for the BBC/HBO fantasy collaboration. December 8 sees the arrival of Doom Patrol season 4. This DC comic property doesn’t have the cultural cache of some of its CW contemporaries but when it’s rolling, it might be one of the best comic series around.
Now that Warner has mostly scuttled its simultaneous streaming/theatrical release strategy, there aren’t many big original movies to speak of.

Are you someone like me who doesn't feel the need to pack December with a barrage of films filled with holiday cheer? Look, I watch "It's a Wonderful Life" every Christmas, but beyond that, my December doesn't change much in the way of what I want to spend my time watching.
So, if you are one of these people and subscribe to HBO Max, they are packing their December with not all that much to celebrate the winter holidays. Yes, there is some programming dedicated to it, such as the "Adult Swim Yule Log," but the service is adding a bunch of new titles for you to enjoy, ranging from horror sequels to this year's Oscar contenders. I've spotlighted five films I think you need to catch up on this December (or just watch them again because they're great).
