Though there are plenty of horror movies that will spook everyone with numerous supernatural and creepy-looking creatures, the kind of horror movies with the silent supervision put in the center of the plot is even creepier.
Keeping the viewers on the edge of their seats with a compelling plot and never-ending intrigues and tension that breaks out among the characters, The Rental may cause even more of concern for those who overthink about being watched during their weekend stay in a rented idyllic place.
What Is The Rental About?
Directed by Dave Franco, The Rental stars Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, Jeremy Allen White and Sheila Vand as two couples who decide to have a getaway weekend in a small house near the Oregon Coast. They’re almost immediately confronted by the property owner Taylor, portrayed by Toby Huss, who turns out to be quite suspicious due to his intention to...

Four years ago, actor Dave Franco made his feature directorial debut with the horror film The Rental, which happened to star his wife Alison Brie. Now Deadline reports that Franco and Brie are set to share the screen in the upcoming horror film Together, which they will also be producing, with first-time feature filmmaker Michael Shanks writing and directing.
Tango, Picturestart, and 30West are providing the financing, while Picturestart, Tango, 1.21, and Princess Pictures produce alongside Franco and Brie.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Deadline was able to learn that Together is about “the horror of co-dependency, told in a unique way.” Of course, they’re not ready to tell us just how the film will be approaching this subject matter in a unique way.

Actors and married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco previously collaborated on Franco’s feature directorial debut, The Rental, in 2020. Now, the pair are set to co-star in a new horror film, Together.
Variety reports that the horror movie feature hails from first-time writer/director Michael Shanks.
Together will explore “the horror of co-dependency told in a unique way,” though additional plot details remain under wraps at this time. That Brie and Franco are married should add an interesting layer to the co-dependency horror, which might fall under the “unique” descriptor of this horror feature.
Brie appeared in Scream 4 before starring in Franco’s The Rental, which saw two couples celebrating a weekend getaway, only to face grueling terror when an imminent threat forces them to expose well-kept secrets. The couple also appeared together onscreen in ensemble comedy The Little Hours and A24’s The Disaster Artist.

When Jeanie Bacharach was casting “The Bear,” she never could’ve anticipated the fervent response it would receive when it premiered last June. “No idea. I loved the script. I knew it was special because it was showing a world that we haven’t really seen on television,” tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “The characters were great, the writing was great, but then when I saw the pilot and what Chris [Storer, the creator] did tonally with the camerawork, the music, the intensity — literally after watching the pilot, I was shaking for 10 minutes afterward. Partly just from how intense it is, but I was like, ‘This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.’ And the fear was like, ‘Is it too inside baseball if you haven’t worked in a restaurant?’ Was it going to be too inside for...

Alison Brie and Dave Franco first conceived the idea for their film “Somebody I Used to Know” on a walk from his high school to his mom’s house during a hometown visit. The couple, who’ve been married since 2017, had each written separate screenplays at that point and wanted to write something together. “[We were] just talking about going home and seeing people from your past and rom-coms and how we love things that are romantic. That was sort of where we started to crack the basic idea,” Brie tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I think we couldn’t get an Uber, so we just kept talking and talking as the walk continued. We got to his mom’s house and made a bunch of notes.”

Jasper Basch, director of sales and distribution for IFC Films, is leaving at week’s end to become Variance Films’ new head of distribution, marking the third high-profile departure for the indie studio in two weeks.
Basch began his career at Variance, eventually becoming manager of distribution. His exit follows those of former president Arianna Bacco and former SVP and Gm of IFC Center John Vanco.
Basch joined IFC in 2020, where he oversaw 30 releases per year. This included a slew of overperforming titles in the summer of 2020, where mostly-closed theaters and mostly delayed tentpoles left the box office dominated by drive-in flicks like “The Wretched” and “The Rental.” During this time, he also handled theatrical distribution for Shudder and Rlje Films. As recently as January of 2023, he helped push the microbudget horror sleeper “‘Skinamarink” to $1.5 million in domestic earnings.

Alison Brie and Dave Franco are pros at not making things awkward on set together, including the times when Franco has to direct his wife’s sex scenes.

In Prime Video’s new romantic comedy Somebody I Used to Know, actor and filmmaker Dave Franco directs his leading lady — wife Alison Brie — through several nude scenes, including a full-frontal streaking sprint across a golf course alongside co-star Kiersey Clemons. Turns out the inspiration for the scene was none other than Brie herself, who co-wrote the script with her husband.
“That was an early addition to the storyline because I had a real penchant for streaking in my college years,” Brie told THR at the film’s Culver City premiere. “I kind of took a step away from that, but, in more recent years, I’ve gotten back into it.”
Just how recent are we talking? “She did it in the hotel right before we got here,” Franco admitted with a laugh. “She went up and down the hallway, and that’s a true story!” (He wasn’t lying,...

Plot: Workaholic TV producer Ally faces a major professional setback which sends her running to the comforts of her hometown. She spends a whirlwind evening reminiscing with her first love Sean and starts to question everything about the person she’s become. Things only get more confusing when she discovers Sean is getting married to Cassidy whose confidence and creative convictions remind Ally of who she used to be.
Review: Dave Franco’s directorial debut, The Rental, was a slick indie thriller that was a surprisingly adept first feature from the actor-turned-filmmaker. Franco delivered a solid horror movie with his wife, Alison Brie, in a lead role. I expected his sophomore effort to be similar, but Franco has instead turned his sights to romantic comedy. With Somebody I Used To Know, Franco and Brie reunite for a film that takes a mature look at a genre that often has been relegated to a rote formula.

Ally (Alison Brie) is an overworked TV producer whose life revolves around a reality television show about dessert. The gig is a far cry from her dream of making documentaries, but it pays the bills and gives her, a Los Angeles transplant from Washington state, a sense of purpose. When Ally’s show gets cancelled by the network, she returns to her small, picturesque hometown of Leavenworth to recalibrate. What she finds instead are reminders of her past and the life she could have had.
Somebody I Used to Know, written by Brie and her husband Dave Franco (who also directs here), is a sharply conceived and smart romantic comedy — the kind of film that might inspire hasty accusations of trying too hard to be different. It takes the narrative skeleton of the genre and enhances it with its own subversive elements. The writing — intelligent but not showy — has echoes...

It's often said that you can't go home again. Time passes, people and places change and move on — it's never exactly the place that was once left behind. While going home again might be like attempting to step in the same river twice, no one says you can't try. When Ally (Alison Brie) finds herself in a personal and professional crisis after a decade away from her hometown, she tries to do just that. The trick, as she has to learn, is that no matter how small and still and static the hometown, one has to contend with the fact that it, too, may have moved on, and so did the hearts of the people your memories contain.

For me personally, Dave Franco was never an actor that carried such an aura that automatically made a film or series tremendously more interesting entirely due to his presence. That said, his feature directorial debut, The Rental (from 2020), left a good impression, despite the movie itself being far from perfect. On the flip side there's Alison Brie. The actress has also ventured into producing and writing in recent years, and now joins her husband to star in the film Somebody I Used to Know, handling the lead role and sharing a screenplay credit with Franco. // Continue Reading ›...

Chicago – How about a precisely done comedy of romance in time for Valentine’s Day weekend? Prime Video presents “Somebody I Used to Know,” a collaboration between a real-life married couple … director/co-writer Dave Franco (“The Rental”) and co-writer/lead actor Alison Brie.
Alison Brie portrays Ally, a reality show TV host whose series is cancelled, and she is left without direction after this attempt to make it in show business. She decides to go back to her hometown to recharge, and meets her old lover Sean (Jay Ellis), who is about to get married to Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons). After a spark is set off again with Sean, Ally sets out to somehow break up the marriage, and ignites all the problems associated with that goal. “Somebody I Used to Know” streams on Prime Video beginning February 10th.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie have not shared the screen before, but the pair have been creative partners for almost a long as they have been romantic partners. Starting with the horror thriller The Rental, Dave Franco has been stretching his filmmaking muscles as a director. For his sophomore effort, Franco has partnered with Brie to star in the romantic comedy Somebody I Used To Know, and the couple also share co-writing duties on the film.
An ode to the rom-coms of the 1980s and 1990s, Somebody I Used To Know is the story of Ally, a filmmaker who is unsure of her career direction from documentaries into reality television. When she returns home to try and reset her life, she runs into former boyfriend Sean (Jay Ellis) and discovers he is getting married that weekend to Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons). Ally decides it is her destiny to woo Sean back and joins the wedding party.

“Community” stars Alison Brie and Danny Pudi, who recently reunited for rom-com “Somebody I Used to Know,” are ready to get started on the sitcom’s much-anticipated film extension.
At the “Somebody I Used to Know” premiere on Wednesday, Brie told Variety she hopes the film shoots this year. “I’m clearing that schedule,” Brie said. Pudi agreed, saying “it looks likely this year. Right now, it’s just the timing.”
Brie and her husband, Dave Franco, co-wrote “Somebody I Used to Know” over the Covid lockdown. Following Franco’s directorial debut in 2020 with “The Rental,” he directed the new film, in which Brie stars opposite “Top Gun: Maverick’s” Jay Ellis.
After TV producer Ally (Brie) faces a professional setback, she runs back to her hometown and spends a whirlwind evening with her first love Sean (Ellis). That is until she learns Sean is getting married — that same weekend.

Something their agent Arn is, much to her disgust, happy to play up in their publicity. After a disturbing encounter at a book signing Arn gets them a job. Unfortunately when they meet the client, Margaret she is even more disturbing, acting strangely and claiming, among other things, she may have cursed their souls. Whether or not that’s true, her face does appear in a mirror, smiling as she watches them in bed.

Love can be beautiful, but it can also be an absolute mess. In the trailer for the new rom-com "Somebody I Used to Know," released Jan. 12, Alison Brie plays Ally, who heads back into her past and reconnects with her ex-boyfriend Sean, played by Jay Ellis. Just when she thinks they might be falling for each other again and she can redo her past mistakes, she learns he's getting married to his girlfriend Cassidy, played by Kiersey Clemons. And to make things more interesting, it seems both of the spouses-to-be start feeling some deep attraction for Ally in the days leading up to their wedding. If this is the first mainstream rom-com to end in a throuple, we wouldn't be mad, but we'll have to wait for the full thing to see.
"Somebody I Used to Know" is written by Brie and her husband, Dave Franco, who also serves as director.

Dave Franco's sophomore directorial effort is headed to Prime Video next month, and it looks to be an angsty and romantic dramedy led by co-writer and star Alison Brie. It also looks like a surprise "Community" reunion, as none other than Danny Pudi pops up in the new first trailer sporting a mustache. Oh, and if none of that's doing it for you, "Somebody I Used To Know" looks like it might feature a musical performance from co-star Kiersey Clemons, whose track from "Hearts Beat Loud" I'm still playing on repeat five years after that movie debuted.
There's a lot more to get excited about in the trailer below, including the appearance of Tony-nominated actress Olga Meridiz and a starring role in the love triangle for "Insecure" breakout Jay Ellis. As with his romantic lead on Issa Rae's hit series, things don't exactly seem simple between his character Sean and his ex,...

"Ally, this has gone way too far!" Amazon has revealed the trailer for a romantic drama called Somebody I Used to Know, the latest film directed by actor Dave Franco. He doesn't even star in this one! This is arriving on Feb 10th during Valentine's Day time for lovers (or not) to enjoy. On a trip to her hometown, workaholic Ally reminisces with her old ex Sean and questions everything about the person she's become. Things only get more confusing when she meets Cassidy, who reminds her of the person she used to be. "The film is an unconventional romantic comedy that looks beyond the traditional love triangle trope. It examines three people who help each other re-discover themselves, where they came from and who they want to be." The film stars Alison Brie as Ally, Jay Ellis as Sean, Kiersey Clemons as Cassidy, with Julie Hagerty, Haley Joel Osment,...

Now Jay Ellis is just somebody Alison Brie used to know in a new rom-com about regretting letting “the one” get away.
Brie co-wrote Prime Video romantic comedy “Somebody I Used to Know” with real-life husband, Dave Franco, who directs. The producing duo previously collaborated on the thriller “The Rental,” marking Franco’s directorial debut.
“Somebody I Used to Know” stars Brie as workaholic TV producer Ally, who returns to her hometown after losing her job and reconnects with her first love Sean (Jay Ellis). The only issue? Sean is engaged to the perfect woman, Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons), who reminds Ally of who she used to be…and who she could have perhaps become. Per the official logline, the film is an unconventional love story about three people who unexpectedly help each other re-discover who they really are, where they came from, and where they’re going.

Warning: This post will contain spoilers for the film "Barbarian."
Zach Cregger's 2022 film "Barbarian" is merely the latest in a long, long series of recent "creepy Airbnb" horror movies. This is a whole subgenre now that includes "The Rental," "Superhost," "A Perfect Host," and the upcoming "8 Found Dead." This new subgenre's immediate persistence implies that many members of the film-going public possess an inherent fear of Bed & Breakfasts. It's someone else's home, after all, and they have to track your behavior while staying in their home. It's an alien location with a certain degree of privacy stripped. The anonymity of a hotel room is absent. Airbnb horror movies -- Fearbnb? -- confirm a renter's worst nightmares. That there is something untoward at play.
That's certainly at play in "Barbarian," a film about a young woman (Georgina Campbell) who finds herself having to unexpectedly share a remote Detroit Airbnb with...

Part of the reason why "The Strangers" has endured as an effective horror movie is that we've all had that feeling of being home alone at night, yet it still feels like there's something else watching us from the shadows. After 85 minutes of homebound terror, the words "because you were home" make all of the preceding violence sound so hauntingly meaningless. A couple on the rocks is thrust into a harrowing night of survival for no other reason besides that their lights were on.
It wasn't until a decade later that a sequel came to theaters with "The Strangers: Prey at Night," which /Film's Chris Evangelista called a "schlocky slasher showcase." Rather than rehashing the hopelessness of Bryan Bertino's 2008 home invasion thriller, the follow-up from Johannes Roberts saw the human prey actually landing a few blows in against their stalkers, and living to see another day. I truly believe...

Every once in a while, a wild, surprising horror movie makes the round that prompts fans to give each other the same advice upon watching it: go in cold. Don't read synopses, and don't even watch the trailer, but instead get your butt to theaters (if you can) and check it out for yourself while the element of surprise is still on the filmmakers' side. I haven't been able to do that last part yet, but I've heard through the horror-loving grapevine that the new movie "Barbarian," starring Justin Long, Bill Skarsgard, and Georgina Campbell, is one such film.
The movie, which in the briefest of descriptions is about a double-booked short-term home rental, shocked /Film critic Ryan Scott when he saw it. In his review, he wrote, "You are not ready for the absolute unpredictable roller coaster of craziness that is about to happen to you when this movie hits theaters.

Alison Brie and Dave Franco are one of those rare Hollywood couples that seem to just work. Brie says one reason for their close connection apparently stems from them working hard to keep in touch, despite their schedules.
Brie and Franco walked the red carpet at a special IFC screening of her new film, “Spin Me Round”, at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills, and the celebrated actress spoke with Et’s Cassie Dilaura about her happy marriage of five years — as well as their upcoming project.

In 1995, director Michael Mann delivered what is arguably the greatest heist film ever made in "Heat." It sees Robert De Niro as an expert thief named Neil McCauley who finds himself at odds with Al Pacino's Lieutenant Vincent Hanna as McCauley's crew narrows in on a big score. What emerges is one of the best cat and mouse crime thrillers to ever grace the silver screen.
Now, nearly 30 years later, we have a sequel in the form of the novel "Heat 2," which Mann actually co-wrote. Not only that, but the filmmaker has already revealed that he has every intention of turning the novel — part prequel and part sequel — into a film as well. But, unless we're going to go "The Irishman" route and de-age everyone very expensively, we are going to need new actors to fill these roles. So, who should fill out the cast? We've got some suggestions!

“Ozark” fans, rejoice. The Jason Bateman and Julia Garner-starring drama series is returning to Netflix in April with a second part to its fourth season — and it’s just one of many other hotly anticipated titles coming to the streamer this month.

For fans of capital-m mess, there’s the Spanish-language “Elite,” which traces the scandalous (and often murderous) exploits of the posh attendees of high school Las Encinas. Or, if you prefer your glamorous mess via reality series, “Selling Sunset” — about the lux real estate market in Los Angeles — is premiering its fifth season April 22.

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.
