Yasiin Bey, the musician formerly known as Mos Def, will portray jazz piano legend Thelonious Monk in the biopic “Thelonious,” which is slated to begin production in the summer of 2022. The project is being brought to the screen by Jupiter Rising Film and its co-founders, Alberto Marzan and Peter Lord Moreland.
Moreland will also write the screenplay for the film, which “will center around [Monk’s] struggles for musical success, mental illness and the spiritual love triangle between his wife Nellie and one of the world’s richest women, Nica Rothschild,” according to a statement.
“This role is one that requires great depth and a unique understanding of who and what Thelonious Monk was and how his lasting impact can still be heard throughout the music world today,” said Marzan. “The moment I met Yasiin, I knew we found our Thelonious. With a third of the world’s population officially on lockdown (a number that is increasing every minute of every day), Netflix and other online services are experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand.
So much so, in fact, that Netflix and YouTube plan to reduce streaming quality across Europe for the next month in order to ease the strain on the Internet. These are strange times, indeed.
Be that as it may, today is April 1st, which means two things – 1) it’s April Fool’s Day, so the Internet is littered with prank videos and other shenanigans and 2) the Internet’s major streaming services have rolled out a fresh wave of content. Speaking of which, thanks to What’s On Netflix, below you’ll find a comprehensive list of all 83 titles that have been added to the online platform as of April 1st.

Now that we’re self-isolating at home to help defeat the Covid-19 pandemic, this may be the perfect opportunity to catch up on things that have been in our Netflix watchlist for a long while.
The novel coronavirus, a mutated strand from the family of coronaviruses, originated from Wuhan, China late last year, but currently, every single country in the world is battling the outbreak. As of now, more than 714,000 people have contracted the disease and 33,617 have passed away due to severe cases of acute respiratory syndrome. In the Us alone, more than 139,000 patients have been identified and approximately 158 million people are under lockdown across all 50 states. While the ramifications of the Covid-19 may have dealt the world of economics an unprecedented blow, business models like Netflix have profited from people spending more time at home with little to do.
Now, obviously, the platform has enough TV shows and movies...

Six black directors who found modest success with early feature films in the 1990s have spoken out about how they felt their careers were stymied by institutional prejudice in Hollywood that offered more opportunities for their white peers — and made more allowances for missteps.
“It’s like they set us up to fail — all they wanted was to be able to pat themselves on the back like they did something,” filmmaker Darnell Martin told the The New York Times in a story published Wednesday with five other African American directors.
Though Martin’s 1994 debut “I Like It Like That” was produced by a major studio, Columbia Pictures, and won the New York Film Critics Circle prize for Best First Feature, she has made only one theatrically released film since, 2008’s “Cadillac Records” — though she has found consistent work on TV projects.

The Lion King reboot is coming whether Disney purists want it or not, but at the very least, the studio has made sure that the cast for the live-action (er . . . CGI?) revival of the beloved story is star-studded, to put it lightly. While we're excited to see Donald Glover as Simba, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumba, and James Earl Jones returning to play Mufasa, we're admittedly the most interested in seeing how Homecoming queen Beyoncé tackles the role of Nala.
We get a few brief glimpses of the character in the latest trailer, but we've yet to hear any of her dialogue or musical performances. Fortunately, while sitting down for an interview with EW about the film, director Jon Favreau gave us a bit more perspective on what made the superstar want to play Nala. Apparently, her adorable kids - 7-year-old daughter Blue Ivy and 1-year-old twins...

Terence Blanchard has composed movie scores for decades, going all the way back to Spike Lee‘s “Jungle Fever” (1991). He has written music for numerous other Spike Lee joints, as well as “Eve’s Bayou” (1997), “Love and Basketball” (2000), “Cadillac Records” (2008) and many more, but his Oscar nomination for “BlacKkKlansman” is the first of his career. Perhaps even more surprising, it’s the first nomination for a black composer in 31 years, and he would be only the second ever to win.
The only black winner in history was musician Herbie Hancock for “Round Midnight” (1986). A couple of years before that Prince won for his score for “Purple Rain” (1984), but that was in the now-defunct Best Song Score category, not for an instrumental score. Immediately after Hancock’s historic victory, South African musician Jonas Gwangwa was nominated alongside George Fenton for scoring “Cry Freedom” (1987). But that was it. No black composer was nominated again until now.

Beyoncé Knowles is such a potent and popular musical artist that it's easy to forget her past performances as an actress in a variety of movies. While still a member of singing group Destiny's Child, she made her film debut opposite Mike Myers in the comedy sequel Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). After the group broke up in 2006 and her emergence as a solo artist, Knowles continued acting in movies such as The Pink Panther … … Dreamgirls … … Obsessed … … and Cadillac Records. Now she may be tackling another high-profile project. She is director Jon Favreau's top choice to voice Nala in the upcoming new version of Disney's The Lion King, according to Variety. The Walking Dead isn't exactly television's most subtle drama – but the show does have its moments. At the end of tonight's episode – "Go Getters" – Enid arrives at the Hilltop Colony, and kneels in front of the freshly dug graves for Glenn and Abraham, near which she places a stick with three green balloons. Last week, she endured the creepy sexual advances of one of the Saviors to hold onto those orbs, for reasons that at the time went unexplained. And now, without over-stressing the point, this series lets a festive...

The first ever Writers Lab, a program targeting female screenwriters over 40, took place at Wiawaka on Lake George, New York from September 18-20, 2015.
The group of mentors included Caroline Kaplan ("Boyhood," "Time Out of Mind," "Personal Velocity"), Kirsten Smith ("Legally Blonde," "Ten Things I Hate About You"), Jessica Bendinger ("Bring It On," "Aquamarine"), Mary Jane Skalski ("Win Win," "The Station Agent"),Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Secret Life of Bees," "Beyond the Lights"),Lydia Dean-Pilcher ("The Lunchbox," The Reluctant Fundamentalist"), Meg LeFauve ("Inside Out," "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys"), and Darnell Martin (“Cadillac Records” and “I Like It Like That”).
Launched by New York Women in Film and Television (Nywift) and Iris, a collective of women filmmakers dedicated to championing the female voice in narrative film, was funded in part by Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, and with the collaboration of the Writers Guild of America East.
Motivated by its screenwriting members who were frustrated with the paucity of development opportunities, Iris founders Elizabeth Kaiden, Kyle Ann Stoke, and Nitza Wilson approached Nywift to support a screenwriting Lab exclusively for this demographic and The Writers Lab came into being.
I spoke with Iris cofounder Elizabeth Kaiden to follow up about the first Writers Lab.
Kouguell: How many screenplays were submitted for consideration?
Kaiden: There were approximately 3,500 screenplays submitted. The selected participants were Sarah Bird ("Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen), Vanessa Carmichael ("The American"). Tracy Charlton ("Raised Up"), Kellen Hertz ("Ashburn"), Anna Hozian ("Anchor Baby"), Lyralen Kaye ("St John the Divine in Iowa"), Jan Kimbrough ("The Glastonbury Cow Party"), Billie Jo Mason ("The Cargo"), Peres Owino ("Basketweaver"), Gretchen Somerfeld ("Face Value"), Janet Stilson ("Jaguar Trail"), and Kim Turner ("It Goes Like This").
Kouguell: What were some highlights from the three-day Lab?
Kaiden: Highlights included the chemistry, warmth and enthusiasm of the group, the bucolic setting in which serious and thoughtful individual meetings between writers and mentors took place, the outstanding, locally sourced, group meals presented by Wiawaka chef Meg, and evening conversations around a bonfire. Oh, and the weather was fabulous.
Kouguell: What is the next step for these writers selected for the Lab?
Kaiden: Writers are all revising their work and communicating with each other. They will use the feedback, resources, references, and friendships they took away from the Lab to further develop their scripts and their opportunities.
Kouguell: In addition to the one-on-one meetings, what other events took place?
Kaiden: There were three panel discussions in which the mentors addressed specific craft issues and general industry insight, informal conversations, group meals, as well as small, directed group conversations led by Nywift Board President Alexis Alexanian to address the challenges writers face in navigating the film world.
Kouguell: What do you feel were some of the most positive outcomes from the weekend in Lake George?
Kaiden: The most exciting outcome of this venture, for me, is uncovering and bringing to public attention the field of women screenwriters, particularly its enormous breadth and depth. The most positive outcomes of the weekend Lab, for me, include the sense of empowerment I believe the Lab gave the writers to continue their work and develop their projects, and the supportive community of writers we all discovered, which can only further our goals of ensuring that more of their stories will reach audiences.
Kouguell: Will the Writers Lab take place again next year?
Kaiden: Yes.
Kouguell: Anything else you’d like to add?
Kaiden: We were excited and delighted by the energy and enthusiasm at the Lab. It felt like an important event. It Was an important event. We discussed and debated issues of theme, tone, craft, structure, character, as well as production, representation, and target markets. The mentors were unbelievably focused, supportive and encouraging. Serious work was done. The writers left feeling, I think, that their voices had been heard, and that they should all continue to tell their stories. I think you will be hearing more from these writers and about these projects. And, although that would have been enough, everyone had a blast.

Could the Queen B be teaming up with the current king of the box office? Deadline reported Tuesday that Bradley Cooper is in talks to make his directorial debut with a remake of the classic showbiz drama and romance A Star is Born, and that Beyonce will be approached to star alongside Cooper in the film.
Nothing is confirmed yet, but Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. hopes he can jump into the project, along with producing and taking a stab at the script by Will Fetters (The Lucky One, Remember Me) once he is finished starring in the Broadway production of The Elephant Man.
The bigger complication however may not be securing Cooper, but Beyonce. Clint Eastwood has long been attached to this project, but he recently revealed in an interview with THR’s Stephen Galloway that Beyonce is obviously very busy being a super-megastar, and that Warner Bros....

Why is no one making new rap movies? Come on, budding directors, now's your time to revive this flagging genre. I've even come up with a few tips to help you along

Earlier this month, the trailer for a new TLC biopic appeared online, inspiring a swath of girls to dust off their Tommy Hilfiger boiler suits and bandanas in preparation for its October release. Don't get stuck watching YouTube videos of cats riding Roombas all weekend. Check out these weekend movie picks.
On the Big Screen: "Lovelace"
Sure, Jennifer Aniston may be a drug-smuggling stripper in "We're the Millers" this weekend, but Amanda Seyfried turns it up to 11 as porn star Linda Lovelace. She's been all over town talking about how liberating the nudie scenes were and how much fun she had filming with a Popsicle prop. This will no doubt have guys zipping over to their local movie theater quicker than Leo DiCaprio with his jetpack.
On the Boob Tube: "Clear History"
It's hard to say what's sexier: Seyfried as a porn star, or Larry David with long hippie hair and a beard? In Clear History, which premieres this Saturday night on HBO, the famously balding funnyman appears as a bizarre mix between Jesus and Jeff Bridges. He plays Nathan Flomm, a Silicon...

Ok, so today isn’t the first time we’ve seen Beyonce with short hair. Doesn’t anyone remember Cadillac Records? (Us neither.) Anyway, making headlines with a drastic crop is one of the oldest tricks in the book, and one that’s still guaranteed to make us take notice.
Here is a chronological account of the most headline-worthy celeb cuts:
From Justin Bieber to Robert Pattinson, Keri Russell to Miley Cyrus, James Hetfield to Rihanna, celebs certainly love to blow our minds with their new ‘dos. Sometimes it’s for a role, like Charlize Theron’s, Cynthia Nixon’s and Natalie Portman’s bald looks. Sometimes, like in the case of Emma Watson, it’s a stylish symbol of a new era in their lives. Sometimes — ahem, Britney Spears — it’s a sign of disaster to come.

Chicago – It seems that 2013 so far has belonged to the Beyoncé, known now just by her first name. She began the year at President Obama’s second inauguration, admitting to lip-syncing her performance of the National Anthem. She followed that up with her triumphant Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured her former girl group, Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé then debuted her HBO special “Life is But a Dream,” which she also produced and directed.
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, and made her debut in national media on “Star Search” when she was still a child. The band for that performance, “Girl Tyme,” eventually morphed into Destiny’s Child, when Beyoncé was only twelve years old. After scoring a single on the 1997 “Men in Black” soundtrack and releasing their self titled debut album, the group went on to multi-platinum success with “The Writing’s on the Wall...

Los Angeles -- Beyonce will be the halftime performer at next year's Super Bowl, we learned this week when the AP broke the news. This got me thinking about the multi-talented multi-hyphenate's movie performances. The R&B superstar has appeared in a lot of films over the past decade, with some decidedly high-profile roles. And while she shouldn't quit her day job just yet, she does have a radiant screen presence.
So here's a ranking of Beyonce's film work – although her greatest role of all may be that of the now-defunct Sasha Fierce persona she created to give herself the confidence to be wild and sexy on stage.
_ "Fade to Black" (2004): Admittedly, this choice is a bit of a cheat. Beyonce wasn't exactly acting here, per se. This was the documentary that captured the 2003 Madison Square Garden concert that was supposedly Jay-z's last. By the time the film came out,...

Who knew the 75th Hunger Games were going to be packed with slightly obscure award winners? Actually…if the Hunger Games were real, that’s exactly who would be forced to take part in them. To wit, Lionsgate announced today that Tony winner Jeffrey Wright has been cast as twitchy tribute Beetee in Catching Fire. Wright raked in a Tony for his role in 1994′s Angels in America, but more recent audiences might remember him from Quantum of Solace, Syriana, Source Code, or Cadillac Records. Meanwhile, our children’s children will remember him as that District 3 tribute in the lightbulb suit from the original Hunger Games trilogy. They…they will be the lucky ones.
In case you haven’t read the second Hunger Games book yet (why?), Wright’s Beetee will be spending most of the movie translating for his oddball companion Wiress, as portrayed by Amanda Plummer, and using...

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting is wrapping up, and there are just a few more announcements to go. The latest? Jeffrey Wright will play District 3 tribute Beetee, A.K.A. Volts, Lionsgate announced in a press release today. An electronics expert, Beetee becomes an ally for Katniss in the 75th Hunger Games.
Wright is best known for his work in the play Angels in America, earning him a Tony Award in 1994. In 2003, he reprised his role in the HBO miniseries, winning a Golden Globe and an Emmy. He’s also appeared in Basquiat, Source Code, Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace,...

Up until now, the Catching Fire casting announcements have pretty much featured amateur actors that few people had heard of. One of the key roles that was still open was Beetee, the District 3 electronics expert who earns the nickname Volts and figures prominently in the second book. Critically acclaimed actor Jeffrey Wright has snagged that role and while the name might not immediately jump out at you, his face is certainly one that you have seen before, most recently in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Ides of March and Source Code. He also starred as Felix Leiter in the last James Bond film Quantum of Solace and portrayed Muddy Waters in Cadillac Records. Beetee becomes one of the participants in the 75th Hunger Games, also known as the Quarter Quell,...

Singer and star of Dreamgirls is reportedly seeking film studio partners for what would be her feature directorial debut
Beyoncé plans to direct a documentary about her own life. The singer and her representatives are reportedly peddling the project to movie studios, seeking partners for what would be her feature directorial debut.
For now, the film is just a proposal. According to the La Times, Beyoncé and her agency, ICM, have been taking 20 minutes of footage around Hollywood – selling the idea of a music doc directed by its star, offering unprecedented access. The movie would reportedly mix concert footage with confessional interviews, but it is not clear whether the 30-year-old star plans to focus on her whole life or just a segment of it. The singer previously appeared in 2011's TV documentary Beyoncé: Year of 4, which highlighted her most recent, fourth, studio album.

With Justin Bieber succeeding and Katy Perry recently stumbling, it seems as though every major pop star wants to take a stab at putting themselves up on the big screen. But rarely, do they attempt to do it themselves. La Times reports that Beyonce Knowles is set to change things up and she’s already underway on creating documentary about herself, taking the reigns as producer and as director.
The film, which is being shopped around to studios now, follows the entertainment icon with a combination of some concert performances, as well as confessional interviews. One can expect it touches on her busy recent years, including the relationship with her husband Jay-z, their daughter, chart-topping albums and even discussions of her potential next foray into the narrative feature film scene, with Clint Eastwood‘s A Star Is Born. At least this would give her some practice for when that moment comes,...

A New York tribute to Mississippi bluesman Robert Johnson to be held on Tuesday–featuring an eclectic bunch of musicians ranging from rappers to an R&B star–had a nearly two-decade-old gestation period.
Veteran actor and director Joe Morton sought the backing of Columbia Records for a play about Johnson in the early 1990s. Steve Berkowitz, a music executive who then oversaw Columbia’s legacy recordings, was keenly interested, but the deal ultimately fell through.

Aaron Munoz and Michael Raymond-James guest starred on last night’s episode of The Walking Dead. For those that haven’t seen the episode yet, I don’t want to get into spoilers, but the scene they were involved in was one of my favorite scenes of the season.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. Can you tell our readers a bit more about yourself and your acting career?
Aaron Munoz: I started out doing a lot of Improv Comedy, wanting to be the next Chris Farley. While I was at Columbia College Chicago and taking classes at Second City I started to really like acting in plays.
