Comedy producers have been told to locate their “funny bones” when pitching shows to the BBC by the most powerful person in British comedy commissioning.
Jon Petrie, who runs BBC comedy, set out his “firmly sitcoms first” stall in a speech this morning in Glasgow.
He urged producers to “send us less shows that are ‘an exploration’ of something and more that know where their funny bones are,” citing the likes of Ghosts, Motherland and Two Doors Down as examples of the “comedy first proposals” he is after.
Petrie has not held back on his desire for sitcoms since taking on the job a couple of years ago and announced a raft of new and returning shows this morning at the BBC Comedy Festival.
But he said his team is “not getting pitched enough of the comedy we need to keep people happy” and is instead over-stocked with dramedies, which...

Every time a TV show comes to an end, it's a good time to look back at the story and see what could have been done better. In many cases, the finale comes a few seasons too late, as the writers try to salvage the story and keep viewers interested, but fall flat at every other attempt.
There aren't many shows that have the guts to make a decision and leave in their prime, but every time it happens, viewers should make sure to watch it as a reminder of how real talent cares about not having their work messed with. From what it looks like, The Outlaws is now going to join this list.

Stephen Merchant has revealed he has no plans for further episodes of The Outlaws after the incoming series three: more details here.
Stephen Merchant took the British comedy scene by storm in 2001 when he wrote and directed The Office with Ricky Gervais. Since then, they have collaborated on Extras, Life’s Too Short, An Idiot Abroad and feature film Cemetery Junction. He went on to forge a successful solo career, from stand up tour Hello Ladies and the American sitcom of the same name to his successful pivot into hour long crime comedy with The Outlaws, which returns for its third series next week.
Created by Merchant and Elgin James, the show follows a disparate group of people assigned to community service for various reasons which gradually reveal themselves.

Exclusive: Stephen Merchant has revealed that The Outlaws Season 3 could be the comedy crime thriller’s swansong.
The creator of the BBC/Amazon hit said “never say never” on making more but “the problem at the moment is whenever I finish a project I feel a bit burned out and need to take some time away to regroup.”
He said there are no plans to make more Outlaws as it currently stands and he is instead preparing for a stand-up comedy tour and working on developing film scripts, along with exec producing Greg Daniels’ upcoming The Office spin-off.

Jessica Gunning is having a moment.
The veteran actress has earned raves for playing unhinged stalker Martha in Netflix’s critically acclaimed limited series Baby Reindeer opposite Richard Gadd. It’s a part she’s embracing as the role of a lifetime, but she’s no overnight sensation. West Yorkshire native Gunning, 38, has been acting ever since graduating from drama school at London’s Rose Bruford College with a long list of credits that includes Doctor Who, White Heat, The Outlaws and Pride.
Baby Reindeer, created by and starring Gadd as inspired by his traumatic real life experiences, casts him as Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters a lonely woman at the bar where he works. The chance encounter, during which he offers her a free cup of tea, spirals over several months as Gunning’s Martha is revealed to be a dangerous, serial stalker. Gunning recently stopped by...

Korean comedy action film “The Roundup: Punishment” destroyed all competition in local theaters on its Wednesday opening day.
The film earned $4.92 million from 821,000 ticket sales, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented a crushing 97% share of the day’s theatrical market.
Including a smattering of previews over the latest weekend, the film finished Wednesday with a cumulative of $5.26 million earned from 862,000 spectators.
Earlier, it was reported that the film had broken the Korean record for advanced ticket sales. The BBC has unveiled a landmark natural history series on insects as its head of unscripted brands the notion that the streamers are taking over “utter bollocks.”
The Traitors commissioner Kate Phillips talked tough on the BBC’s place in the ecosystem at Creative Cities Convention, citing research that BBC iPlayer is watched by more people in the UK than Disney+, Prime Video and Netflix combined. “This idea that broadcasters are irrelevant and streamers are taking over is utter bollocks,” she said. “More than nine out of 10 adults access the BBC in the UK.”
Notably, Phillips was speaking a session after Grant Mansfield, the EP behind Disney+’s most-watched natural history series of all time, A Real Bug’s Life, who had called on indies to embrace opportunities in the States.

“Most British producers will find themselves very welcome in America.”
That is the verdict of Grant Mansfield, the head of A Real Bug’s Life and Tiny World producer Plimsoll, who, along with ITV Studios boss Julian Bellamy, attempted to paint a glass-half-full portrait of the state of the UK production industry amid doom and gloom proclamations at the Creative Cities Convention.
Mansfield said he “understands the negative mood music” but posited that “the transformational thing [for UK producers] is international,” as he revealed that 90% of Plimsoll’s commissions come from outside the UK.
“The whole business of what your market is has become more porous and most British producers wil find themselves very welcome in America,” said Mansfield. “They are incredibly respectful and knowledgeable of the UK market.”

The UK Labour Party has set out its plan for the film and TV industries, drawing a dividing line between itself and the ruling Conservatives as it slams the government for “getting themselves all tied up in culture wars of their own making and failing to support a pipeline of talent.”
Delivering her first major set-piece at the Creative Cities Convention, Shadow Culture Secretary Thangam Debbonaire said she will “not be fighting culture wars” but instead will focus on arts and culture being central to Labour’s “Phase One” plan if it gets into office. Her boss, Labour leader Keir Starmer, is plotting “a decade of national renewal in Britain.” The election is expected later this year and Labour is currently sitting around 20 points ahead of the Conservatives in the polls.
Debbonaire set out Labour’s position in thorny areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), the BBC and the ailing freelance workforce.

The director of Mr Bates vs the Post Office has urged the creation of a “mechanism” for British broadcasters to continue to tell campaigning stories as he communicates a desire for his smash ITV drama not to become a “unicorn.”
Since Mr Bates aired in January, James Strong said he has been contacted by “loads and loads of people asking for help, from small stories to [scandals about] corporate structures.”
“I think it’s about setting up a mechanism so that all these issues can be represented,” he told the Creative Cities Convention. “[People affected] can go to a broadcaster and say, ‘We’ve got this idea, can we make a drama?’.”
The BAFTA nominee, whose past credits include Vigil and Doctor Who, said Mr Bates “shouldn’t be a unicorn” and urged British broadcasters to support “factual stories.”

Netflix UK will not be changing its commissioning course when the streamer stops reporting quarterly subs numbers, according to its programing chief.
Anne Mensah, who oversees a huge slate featuring the likes of Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen, said “there is no secret” for producers when they pitch to Netflix, and that this will remain the same given the streamer’s fresh focus on profit over subs.
“I can’t stress enough that [our commissioning strategy] is simply about how you get audiences to press play and stay,” she told the Creative Cities Convention in response to a question over Netflix’s decision to stop reporting quarterly subs numbers from next year.
“Before I arrived the idea was how to put in place a team that is authentically ‘of the UK’ and show you have absolute commitment to staying here long term,” she added. “For me the content remains utterly key.”

The female star of Baby Reindeer says she felt a sense of responsibility for her co-star Richard Gadd, who wrote the Netflix drama about a stalker and her victim, based on his own real-life experience of being targeted.
In the series which has topped the Netflix charts on both sides of the Atlantic since its release last week, Jessica Gunning plays Martha who meets kindly barman Donny. Their harmless first encounter becomes chilling as Martha harasses Donny.
Scottish comedian Gadd, who plays Donny in the show, based the story on an earlier period in his real life, in which he had been abused by an older man, and went on to become a target of stalking.
Gunning told the BBC she felt the need to check in with Gadd during filming, particularly the more harrowing scenes of grooming and assault seen in episode four out of seven:
“That was a really tough time.

Disney has confirmed that Korean webtoon-to-screen adaptation “Low Life” is poised to begin production.
When valuable treasure is discovered off the coast of Korea, the country’s biggest degenerates come crawling out of the woodwork in the hope of striking it big. Word spreads after a fisherman got lucky and kept a piece of the booty for himself. Among those tempted to brave the depths of the ocean are two members of a fractious and disunited crime family – notably an uncle who both looked after his nephew and led him astray.
The original story was a webtoon written by Yoon Tae-ho and first published by Kakao between 2014 and 2015. The literal translation of the Korean title is ‘country bumpkin.’ The story itself was inspired by a real-life event when a 14th century Chinese ship was found in 1975 off the coast of Shinan, South Korea.

Christopher Walken joined Dune: Part Two as one of the new additions besides Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, and Florence Pugh. The shortest distance between two points is popularly believed to be a straight line. But if one of those points is the chin, cheekbone or torso of some sneering and/or psychotic Korean gangster, the shortest route is actually the arc described by either one of Korean megastar Don Lee’s fists, here playing the fists of Detective Ma, protagonist of the ludicrously watchable “Roundup” series.
“The Roundup” and “The Roundup: No Way Out” the first two sequels to 2017’s “The Outlaws,” seemed to inch a little closer each time to the platonic ideal of star-driven action-franchise purity. Now, with Lee (aka Ma Dong-seok) and his fists directed by Heo Myeong-haeng, a stunt choreographer who worked on Lee’s breakout “Train to Busan,” the fourth episode gets closer still. “The Roundup: Punishment” minimizes unnecessary originality, while gloriously maximizing the opportunities for Lee to crack wise, or look aggrieved and a little bored,...

In Berlin with “The Roundup: Punishment,” part four of the action movie series that he created and stars in, the larger-than-life Korean American Don Lee finds himself simultaneously in multiple timely and lucrative businesses.
These include the Marvel superhero business, the Korea-to-Hollywood remake business, “The Roundup” franchise and its multiple spinoff possibilities. Lee may even be in the business of saving Korean cinema, which is currently having one of its periodic wobbles.
“What we have to do is make really, really fun entertaining movies. Put them in cinemas, so that everyone will come back to the theaters. One of my goals is to entertain more people,” Lee told Variety on the fringes of the Berlin Film Festival, where “Punishment” has its world premiere as an out-of-competition gala screening.
The second element of the franchise, “The Roundup,” earned $99 million in 2022, making it Korea’s highest grossing movie that year, while last...
