Madonna‘s “Like a Virgin” was a little edgy in its day, but the controversy didn’t stop it from becoming a major hit for the Material Girl. If a song with a similar sentiment came out today, it would inspire an endless internet discourse. Many listeners would find “Like a Virgin” offensive today, but not for the reasons it was offensive in 1984.
Why Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ was controversial the 1st time
The Miami Herald reports that “Like a Virgin” was controversial when it came out in 1984 because of its brazen sexuality. Using the word “virgin” in a pop song was very provocative. While the tune was intended as a love song, the Queen of Pop’s vocals made it sound more sensual than amorous.
Today, the track would be seen as fetishizing virginity. Obviously, people can be virgins at any age. However, people tend to associate virginity with teenagers.

Depending on how you understand it, Madonna‘s “Like a Virgin” might be a tune about virginity loss. The “Dress You Up” singer shot down that interpretation. She didn’t have kind words for virginal men.
What Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ is really about
During a 1985 interview with Spin, the Queen of Pop revealed she can be a little picky when it comes to choosing sexual partners. “I wouldn’t like to sleep with a guy who was a virgin,” she said. “I’d have to teach him stuff and I don’t have the patience. I’d rather deal with experience.”
The Material Girl said listeners shouldn’t interpret her hit single “Like a Virgin” too literally. “When I say ‘virgin,’ like in my song, I’m not thinking about [a] sexual virgin,” she explained. “I mean newness. Even after I made love for the first time, I still...

Courtney Love has never been shy when it comes to sharing her opinions about other people. Going all the way back to the early Nineties, the Hole singer has generated headlines by publicly trashing rock musicians, pop singers, movie stars, and even members of her own family. It’s a level of brutal candor you rarely see with public figures, but as Courtney Love told Rolling Stone in 1994, she simply doesn’t care what others think about her. “If people try to put me in the crazy box–’crazy fucking Courtney’–go ahead,...

In the new trailer for Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers discuss the challenges of being a queer band in the late-Eighties onward, from not fitting in, to the lack of mainstream media coverage.
The trailblazing duo Indigo Girls — who released their debut album, Strange Fire, in 1987 — were one of a few bands who came out publicly at a time when marriage equality seemed an impossibility and homophobia and misogyny were prevalent.

John Lennon said he wanted to be like The Ronettes’ Ronnie Spector or The Chiffons when he recorded one of his albums. He worked on the record with a musical genius who was arguably the most famous producer of all time. The record gave us one of John’s most famous and lovely covers.

The holiday season is upon us, and Moonbug is making a big investment in retail. The Candle Media-owned company has partnered with toymaker Spin Master for a wide-ranging agreement that includes content initiatives, a paid media campaign, and toylines inspired by channels like Blippi and Little Angel.
The deal makes Spin Master the global toy licensee of the Blippi and Little Angel brands. Those two channels have each accrued billions of YouTube views by distributing family-friendly content like nursery rhymes and educational videos. The biggest Moonbug-owned property, CoComelon, has already expanded into the world of retail through a pact with Squishmallow maker Jazwares.
Moonbug will now get advice from Spin Master as it plots its advance into big-box stores. The partnership will also extend to YouTube, where Spin Master operates several of its own channels under its Spin Master Entertainment banner.

The Beatles‘ “Now and Then” was released as a single in 2023, decades after John Lennon’s death in 1980. We can never know for sure if the “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” singer would have had an issue with his bandmates completing the record without him. However, a comment he made in 1975 suggests he would have been fine with it. In the same interview, he revealed what he thought of a rock star covering “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
John Lennon wanted unreleased Beatles songs to see the light of day
During a 1975 interview with Spin, John discussed unreleased Beatles tunes. “There are so many good singles that The Beatles wrote that were never released,” he revealed. “Why don’t people do them? It’s good for me; it’s good for Paul. It’s good for all of us.” From this comment, we can reasonably assume he would...

Please Allow This Asian American music writer to articulate this at the level it deserves: Egregious racism and misogyny have a long history in rock & roll — from those on the industry side who have appropriated Black artists’ work to those at the top of the publications who dictated what has been featured. The gatekeepers have always been a boys’ club — specifically a white boys’ club.

The year was 1992. Not yet a multibillion-dollar industry, hip-hop was still considered an emerging cultural movement hailing from New York City's most disenfranchised borough: the Bronx. However, it had spread across the East and West coasts and specific pockets of the US, speaking intimately to Black and brown communities as both an outlet to address socioeconomic issues and a form of entertainment provided by rappers, DJs, dancers, and visual artists.

Sinéad O’Connor once told Rolling Stone, “I don’t do anything in order to cause trouble. It just so happens that what I do naturally causes trouble.”
Always outspoken and never one to back down, Sinéad did occasionally run into trouble with her fellow stars.
Prince
With her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”, Sinéad became a worldwide sensation. And while Prince did once say he “loved” her version, the song would lead to a reported fight between the artists.
As Sinéad told Norway’s Nrk in 2014, “I made it without him. I’d never met him. He summoned me to his house – and it’s foolish to do this to an Irish woman – he said he didn’t like me saying bad words in interviews. So I told him to f*** off.”
Sinéad added, “He got quite violent. I had to escape out of his house at 5 in the morning.

Blackie Onassis, drummer for the alt-rock act Urge Overkill during their ’90s heyday, has died. A spokesperson for the band reported his passing to the Los Angeles Times, but no cause of death was given.
Onassis (real name John Rowan) joined Urge Overkill in 1991, playing alongside founding members Nash Kato and Eddie “King” Roeser. He appeared on their albums The Supersonic Storybook (1991), Saturation (1993), and Exit the Dragon (1995).
While the Chicago-based band impacted alternative-rock radio with such songs as “Sister Havana” and “Positive Bleeding,” they are perhaps best known for their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” which famously appeared in the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. They also got major exposure when they opened for Nirvana on the latter’s tour in support of Nevermind.

The turn of the new millennium marked a realignment in both global politics and pop culture. September 11th and the seemingly endless wars that followed obliterated the illusion of relative peace and prosperity that, in the late 20th century, lulled much of the Western world into a sense of complacency. The Chicks were blacklisted for speaking out against George W. Bush’s military adventures. And the music industry was on the brink of collapse, rocked by the rise of Napster and the ensuing digital revolution.
Amid all of it, the teen-pop bubble of the late 1990s finally popped. By 2003, artists like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake endeavored, with varying degrees of success, to break out of the Mouseketeer mold, while ostensibly edgier, more reputable young artists such as Avril Lavigne were packaged and sold as teen-pop with a Hot Topic twist.
