With the help of Gary, Nate will have to impersonate Hoover, but he soon learns it is harder being Hoover than he expected. Since Zari is stuck without the internet, she is forced to take a digital detox and becomes obsessed with figuring out who blew up the Waverider. Meanwhile, Astra and Spooner have stayed behind in Texas and are dealing with the aftermath of Astra's special spell.—The CW
- On the road, the Legends try to get their car running when the radiator gives out. Ava worries about the timeline changing when someone discovers Hoover is missing. They search the car for water and find a radio, and tune it into a broadcast about the Bullet Blondes. Nate tells Sarah that he's messed up the 20th century timeline and he killed Hoover.
Ava finds a train ticket for Hoover to go to Midland to NYC. Nate realizes that if Hoover doesn't show up, the timeline will be changed. Sarah tells him that he'll have to impersonate Hoover, and Gary coughs up hair from Hoover's body that he ate. Behrad gets the car started, and they head for the train station.
At the house, Astra and Spooner take the now-human Gideon inside and try to work out what happens. Astra figures that her spell to resurrect Waverider brought Gideon to "life". Gloria points out that Gideon doesn't look like a machine, and Spooner explains about computers as best she can. Astra isn't thrilled with how her magic failed, Gideon eats an apple.
The Legends reach the train station, and Gary finishes the potion to make Nate look like Hoover. The train is leaving in five minutes, and Sarah handcuffs Ava and herself together, and leads Ava off. Nate, Gary, and Behrad "arrest" them, posing as g-men, and Nate buys more train tickets for the others. The conductor takes them to the honeymoon suite, the train's most secure cabin, and the couple occupying it gladly give it up for "Hoover". The Legends move in, and Nate says that historically, Hoover is one of the most important men of the 20th century.
The train starts up, and Sarah and Ava go to "disappear", using John's key to go through a door to the manor. Zari greets them, and is clearly high. Sarah tells her that they're on a train, and Zari explains that she's going on a "journey". Ava and Sarah go upstairs, and tell Zari not to disturb them.
On the train, Nate suggests that they hide in the cabin. Francis Baker knocks on the doors, and is a close friend of Hoover's. Gary warns that the potion could last anywhere from 1 hour to 24, and Nate drinks the potion. Gary says since Nate drank it in front of them, they'll see him as himself and will have to go by how others react.
Nate opens the door and Baker sees him as Hoover. Playing along, Nate goes with Baker who offers to buy "Hoover" lunch. They go to the dining cabin and Baker tells Behrad and Gary that they'll be "more comfortable" elsewhere, and Nate has no choice but to agree.
Gideon eats an apple into art, and Astra and Spooner return and hope the Legends return because they'll know what to do with Gideon. The now-human Gideon passes out.
Ava comes downstairs and finds Zari spraying whipped cream into her mouth. Zari says that she's okay and love their love while she eats sugar foam. She insists that she's a-okay, and Ava suggests that Zari's coping mechanisms might be different from Behrad's. Ava says that they should set up Zari as cleaner, and Zari seizes on the idea, and notes that Sarah and Ava are very loud.
A woman flirts with Nate, and discovers that her purse is gone. Baker overhears and says that Nate will investigate, suggests that they round up the usual suspects, and looks significantly at Gary and Behrad. Nate looks the door out instead, and asks the woman what is in the purse, and asks her what was in it. The other passengers have money, jewelry, and a gun, but Nate finds a dog Goldie beneath a table that took the purse. He gives it back to the woman, and everyone applauds.
Nate quickly leaves, and tells Behrad and Gary that he's trying to be as "Hoover"-like as possible. Behrad isn't thrilled that Baker thinks they're petty thieves because of his race. The train jerks to a halt and two g-men board the train from a station. They see Nate and tells him that there's a kidnap plot afoot directed at Hoover, and they have to get Nate off the train. Nate asks them to give them a moment, and talks quietly with the others. They discuss the situation, and Nate points out that in the original timeline, Hoover wasn't kidnapped. So he figures they have to solve the case.
In 1925, Gloria tends to Gideon. She says that Gideon is a living person and Astra me her, and tells her that she' snow a mother. Astra insists that she's nobody's mother, and Spooner tells Gloria that the other Legends are going to NYC to get a time-travel expert, and then they'll come back for them. Gloria suggests that they should go back to the moment before they left.
The g-men, Donovan and Rogers, point out that the telegram they got warning about the kidnapping plot was misspelled. Baker says that Nate should stay back, but Nate insists that Hoover would investigate and the two g-men should check who boarded the train in Midland, while he and his friends will search the train from front to back.
The Legends question the passengers, looking for a foreigner who would have misspelled the telegram. They find out that everyone with first-class tickets like Hoover, while the poorer passengers hate him. Nate figures they should concentrate on the "how" rather than "why, and figure out that one of the crew could reroute the train to an abandoned track and kidnap Hoover.
Donovan and Rogers bring in the train's engineer, Igor a Russian. Igor is also a labor organizer, and joined the crew back in Midland. They invite Nate to do his worst, having heard of Hoover's reputation
Zari is cleaning the kitchen, and finds nothing but a bottle of whiskey. She takes the bottle out, and another one appears. Ava comes in and Zari says that the fridge is making whiskey. Zari keeps taking out bottles, and more keep appearing. She suggests that the more Waveriders could show up if they stop the first one that blew their Waverider up. Ava figures that Zari is still high and tells her to clean.
Nate steps out in the hallway and psyches himself up. Behrad objects, and Nate says that he needs a confession. He figures that he's nobody in the timeline compared to Hoover, and Behrad tells him that he has to forgive himself. Nate says that it isn't about him.
In 1925, Spooner asks Astra what they're going to do about Spooner. Astra figures they can't do anything. Gideon brings over more apples she's bitten into heads, and then puts them in a box and stomps on them. Spooner tries to figure out what Gideon is saying, and Astra yells at Gideon, wishing she was back in Waverider's wires. Gideon walks off, disappointed, and Astra tells Spooner that Gideon is a reminder of her failure. Spooner says that she doesn't bring anything to the table, and admits that they're useless.
The lights flicker and spark as outside, Gideon pulls the fuse out of the fuse box. As Spooner and Astra run out, Gideon deliberately short circuits herself and Spooner realizes that she was doing what Astra told her.
Ava goes back to the kitchen and finds Zari surrounded by bottles of whiskey. Zari says that she isn't stoned and figures John wanted her to clear her head and think about the bigger picture. She's thought about without going on with the team, and think about how they got there. Zari has a list of suspects who might have blown up Waverider, and Ava is eager to see her list.
Nate and the others go in, and Nate loses his temper with Igor. He tells the others to get out, and then hits things in the room to make it sound like he's beating Igor. Igor says that it's worse than last time, and explains that the FBI came after Igor, his family, and hundreds of others during the hunt for Emma Goldman in 1919. The engineer tells Nate that he lost everything because of him, and Nate apologizes and says that it makes sense Igor wanted to kidnapped him.
Igor denies trying to kidnap Hoover, and says that sometimes a person is so focused on someone else that they don't notice what is right in front of them. Nate considers Igor's words and notices that they're no longer passing mountains, and Igor tells him that someone switched them onto another track 15 miles back.
Nate goes out into the highway, and tells Gary and Behrad to grab Rogers and Donovan. As Gary grabs one, the other one figures their ruse is over and draws his gun. The train brakes, and Nate grabs the gun. The two kidnappers say that Al Capone has a reward out for Hoover. Outside, Tony yells to Nate to come out, and everyone looks out and sees that Tony, Capone's lieutenant and a dozen of his men have the train surrounded and the track ahead barricaded.
Capone threatens to start killing passengers if Nate doesn't come out, and Behrad figures they can take the guys. Nate says that they won't, and tells Gary and Behrad that in the real timeline none of it happened and he has to make it right. He gives Gary his revolver and walks over to Tony. Nate tells Tony that he got him, and Tony has no idea who "Nate" is because the potion has worn off.
Zari and Ava work through the list of suspects, putting post-it notes with the names on bottle. Ava finds one and wonders if he's the one responsible, just as Gary and Behrad yell to them through the door and tell them that Nate is in trouble and they need back-up. Sarah comes up with idea to stop Tony's men using the bottle and the gummy bears Zari has been eating.
Tony dismisses Nate as a nobody, and Nate says that he's the nobody who killed Hoover. As Tony laments that his plan to kidnap Hoover has been ruined by Hoover being dead, Nate sympathize, Tony wants to mess up Nate's face and pass his body off as Hoover, and Nate says that Tony can't run from the lie forever. He suggests that Tony take a deep breath and forgive himself, and Tony does so but doesn't feel better about the situation.
The Legends come out and Sarah offers Tony a bottle of whiskey, and tell him there's more where that came from. Tony is impressed by the Bullet Blondes, while Nate apologizes to Gary and Behrad for how he treated them. Hoover pulls up in his car, much to Nate's surprise, and gets out and introduces himself.
Zari figures that it's not a coincidence that there are two Hoovers and two Waveriders. Tony's men attack Hoover, while the Legends and the passengers take cover. Hoover single-handedly takes out all of the gangsters, and Ava worries that the timeline is out of control. Sarah grabs a bottle and knocks out Hoover from behind. When the Legends come out, Sarah realizes that "Hoover" is a robot. Zari points out to Ava that she was right, and the suspect she suspected was a robot.
The robot comes back online and initiates a self-destruct sequence and announces a 20-second countdown. Nate figures that Spooner and Astra are chilling with Gloria. The robot explodes as the Legends drive off in Hoover's car.
At Gloria's house, Astra is at Gideon's beside. Astra apologizes to Gideon and suggests they try again, as Spooner and Gloria look on. Gloria assures Spooner that she'll find a way to communicate with Gideon, and Spooner didn't talk until she was six. Spooner thanks her mother, and as Gloria leaves, Spooner goes over to the bed and tells Gideon that she knows it's hard for her that no one understands her. Spooner takes Gideon's hand and hears her voice in her head, and tells Gideon that it's okay. She has Gideon focus, and Gideon thinks that Davies' time-travel experiment will take place in NYC in two weeks.
Gideon speaks, and tells Spooner and Astra that they have to get to Davies first or the Legends will die.
