Filming is now underway on action adventure movie “Afterburn,” starring Dave Bautista and Samuel L. Jackson with Olga Kurylenko and Kristofer Hivju rounding out the cast.
The film is directed by J.J. Perry, who recently helmed Lionsgate’s “The Killer’s Game,” also with Bautista, working from a screenplay adapted by Matthew Johnson and Nimrod Antal from the “Red 5” comic book of the same name.
Set ten years after a solar flare wiped out technology across the globe, “Afterburn” follows ex-soldier Jake (Bautista), who works as a treasure hunter recovering valuable objects from the old world for powerful clients. His latest mission: team up with freedom fighter Drea (Kurylenko) to recover the Mona Lisa before an unhinged warlord gets there first.
The picture is produced by Neal H. Moritz (“Fast and Furious” franchise) and Toby Jaffe (“Total Recall”) for Original Film and Steve Richards for Endurance Media. Bautista will also produce for Dogbone Entertainment,...

Award-winning Colombian director-producer Simon Brand and Miami-based media executive producer Daniel Eilemberg have joined forces with the founders of Emmy-winning Imaginer Films, Julio César and Laura Franco, to launch Clover Studios, a new production services company in Colombia.
The new enterprise is in response to Colombia’s phenomenal growth as a major production center, driven by its competitive production incentives and flourishing creative community.
Led by Netflix’s ambitious series adaptation of Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s literary masterpiece “100 Years of Solitude,” which has entailed a full-scale recreation of the mythical village of Macondo and 20,000 extras, a number of high-profile projects have been lured to the country.
Just last year, upcoming sequel “Paddington in Peru” was mostly shot in Colombia instead of the country in its title. This month Netflix announced its first multi-year creative partnership with Colombian talent, the writer-director team Camilo Prince and Pablo González, whose thriller “The Hijacking of Flight 601,...

The thriller The Woman in the Yard, which is coming our way from Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and director Jaume Collet-Serra, was once set to reach theatres on January 10, 2025, but it was recently bumped off the Universal release slate entirely to make room for another Blumhouse / Universal collaboration, the Wolf Man reboot directed by Leigh Whannell. (Wolf Man is now scheduled for a January 17 release.) The release date shake-up isn’t slowing down The Woman in the Yard‘s momentum, though. Deadline reports that the project has just added another cast member: Russell Hornsby of The Hate U Give and Fences.
Hornsby joins the previously announced Danielle Deadwyler of The Devil to Pay and Till in the cast. Okwui Okpokwasili of The Exorcist: Believer and I Am Legend is also in there.

Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh doesn’t care about the camera. He cares more about the story. And indeed, he shot another successful feature (Presence) on a prosumer camera (Sony a9 III).
Sony Alpha 9 III Soderbergh: Unconventional director and cinematographer
Director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh loves to be the first to try new cameras even on high-end feature film productions. His early films were primarily filmed on Super 8 and 16 mm film formats. In the middle of his career, he was not afraid to utilize new cameras even in their production phase. For instance, Contagion (2011) which is one of the most-watched movies in the Covid era, was shot on the Red One Mx. Before that, Soderbergh filmed all of The Girlfriend Experience (2009) on a Red One camera, which has retailed for $4000 for that time. Furthermore, Soderbergh filmed the entirety of Unsane (2018) on an iPhone 7 Plus with its 4K digital camera using the app FiLMiC Pro.

Today’s the day we finally get an answer of sorts to what exactly is The Unknown in “All Things Wicked”, the latest chapter for Dead by Daylight from Behaviour Interactive. Available now on PC and consoles, “All Things Wicked” brings a new Killer in The Unknown, along with a new Survivor in Sable Ward into The Fog, along with a new Map in Greenville Square.
In keeping with the mysteriousness of The Unknown, the background of the new Killer is “believed to be a mysterious evil so heinous that investigating it almost immediately invited death.” As mentioned in the previous reveal of the new chapter, The Unknown is able to launch a projectile of unknown origin, leaving behind a toxic area where it lands. Once it lands a hit, it becomes Unbound, which allows it to quickly leap through windows. It has an Unforseen ability that when kicking a generator,...

Kaledonia Pictures says it’s making The Unknown, loosely based on the doomed Willy’s Chocolate Experience; organiser says it was unaware about the film.
Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow, a calamitous live family event held in late February that went viral, continues to make headlines. And among all the memes and accounts of what went wrong – taken from jobbing actors involved in the event – there emerged the story that a film was being made, loosely based on a character connected to it all.
That film is said to be a horror film called The Unknown, and according to its production company, Kaledonia Pictures, it’s set for release later this year.
According to the event organiser behind the experience, however – a company called House Of Illuminati, founded by Glaswegian Billy Coull – it had no previous knowledge of the film. Nor, it says, does it have any connection to Kaledonia Pictures,...

Behaviour Interactive’s cheekiness last week has led up to the announcement today of the newest chapter for Dead by Daylight in “All Things Wicked”. Taking players to a place with more questions than answers, the new chapter will arrive March 12, and introduces a new Killer in The Unknown, a new Survivor, and a new Map in the “ominously quiet” Greenville Square.
In keeping with last week’s video, The Unknown is very much a mystery. The press release for “All Things Wicked” has pulled the [Redacted] move, blacking out a description for the new Killer while teasing it’s main ability: a deadly toxin that causes Survivors to hallucinate. The Unknown apparently is also able to create husks of itself, allowing it to potentiality swap places with these husks to move around the map.

“Till” star Danielle Deadwyler and “Black Adam” director Jaume Collet-Serra are teaming up for “The Woman in the Yard,” a thriller from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures.
Sam Stefanak wrote the screenplay for “The Woman in the Yard,” though the film’s logline hasn’t been disclosed. It’s scheduled to be released in theaters on Jan. 10, 2025.
Blumhouse founder Jason Blum said he’s been trying to find the right project to work on with Collet-Serra for “over a decade.”
“’The Woman in the Yard’ is the perfect match, a film that’s ambitious in scope but modest in budget that combines Jaume’s vision with the incomparable Danielle Deadwyler,” Blum said in a statement.
In addition to starring, Deadwyler is executive producing “The Woman in the Yard” with Collet-Serra, Gabrielle Ebron, Scott Greenberg and James Mora. Jason Blum and Stephanie Allain will serve as producers. Haley Pigman and Jungyoon Kim...

From 2010 to 2011, the remains of 11 people were discovered near Gilgo Beach in Long Island’s remote South Shore. The grisly discoveries sent waves of terror and grief through the community, and for more than a decade, the murders went unsolved. Then, in July 2023, there was a break in the case — and for the first time in 13 years, there was a clear suspect of who may have been responsible.
In the untitled three-part documentary series from Story Syndicate and director Liz Garbus, the conclusion to the multi-decade quest for justice unfolds in real time. The series will tell the stories of the victims’ lives via exclusive interviews with their families, and will review how police were finally able to identify Rex Heuermann, a prolific NYC architect living in Nassau County, as a suspect. Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

I tried making a conscious effort to find posters in areas I might not have normally visited this year. That’s the effect of having been able to follow so many design firms and artists on Twitter before a majority (justifiably) bailed upon its sale. With such broad and instant access, the ease at which I discovered new releases made it so I often forget to look elsewhere.

Pierre Morrel's 2008 film "Taken" is brazenly morally irresponsible.
"Taken" was not so much a thriller as an indulgent "dad fantasy," rooted in xenophobia and male sexual hysterics. The lead character, Bryan Mills, played by a wholly devoted and utterly capable Liam Neeson, was a divorced dad of a teenage girl named Kim (Maggie Grace) who saw his clout as a parent disappearing into the wealthy black hole of a cold-shouldered ex-wife (Famke Janssen) and her attentive new husband (Xander Berkeley). Bryan is a former CIA agent, and his job kept him away from home enough to damage his marriage. When Kim announces that she and a friend are going on an international holiday together, Bryan warns her that such an excursion is dangerous; kidnappers, he knows, often target traveling American teenage girls and sell them into sexual slavery. It sounds paranoid and everyone dismisses him.
Perhaps predictably, Kim is almost...

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

“Bird Box Barcelona” remained the most-watched film worldwide on Netflix, even as “The Out-Laws” and the newly released “They Cloned Tyrone” dominated the Top 10 English film chart for the week of July 17. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Normally, Netflix’s English language films have the biggest audiences across the globe on a weekly basis, but with 19 million views, “Bird Box Barcelona” was the most-watched film in much of Latin and South America, as well as Spain and ten other European countries, plus a good portion of Asia as well.
Because of that, the “Bird Box” prequel ended up faring better than the #1 English language film, “The Out-Laws,” starring Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, which continues to be quite popular with 12.1 million views last week. “The Out-Laws” was in the Top 10 for 93 countries, but only #1 in four European countries, as well as Israel.

Time travel might not be a reality yet, but NASA has given us a glimpse at what it might look like. The mind-blowing triumph of technology, presented by the James Webb Space Telescope (Jwst), was launched by NASA on December 25, 2021. It’s like a time machine that can capture the “First Light” of the universe, revealing galaxies that formed 13.8 billion years ago, right after the Big Bang. The Jwst is the most advanced and brilliant space observatory telescope ever created in human history. Even more capable than the Hubble Space Telescope due to its extraordinary features. Instead of just visible light, Jwst can detect infrared light, allowing it to peer through cosmic dust clouds and see things that were previously hidden from view. This cutting-edge telescope can pick up the faintest signals from distant galaxies, giving us a glimpse of the universe’s birth and evolution, much like a crystal...

"We're putting the largest telescope in space – a million miles away." Netflix has revealed their fourth and final trailer in the Unknown series of documentaries streaming throughout July this summer. The final one examining mysteries and "unknowns" about our world is titled Unknown: Cosmic Time Machine, and it's a compelling behind-the-scenes look at the construction and launch of NASA's thrilling new James Webb Space Telescope (Jwst). This is the fourth & last film in a four-week docuseries event - following The Lost Pyramid, and Killer Robots, and Cave of Bones. With inside access to NASA's ambitious mission to launch the telescope, which replaces the iconic Hubble Telescope, the film follows a team of engineers and scientists as they take the next giant leap in our quest to understand the universe. As a big time space nerd, I've already been following this telescope and its updates (@NASAWebb). It's so cool! I'll have to watch this.

‘Unknown: Cave Of Bones’ (2023) Review: Has The Burial Practice Been Present Since The Dawn Of Life?
Homo naledi, an extinct species of hominids, possesses a unique combination of primitive and present human characteristics. The remains of this ancient species, estimated to be approximately 250,000 to 300,000 years old, were discovered in the Rising Star Cave in South Africa. The announcement of this discovery in 2015 marked a significant advancement in our understanding of human history, as it represented one of the most recent findings related to our evolutionary past.
Notably, the exploration and excavation of the Rising Star Cave by the renowned paleoanthropologist and archaeologist Lee Berger played a crucial role in unraveling the story of Homo naledi. In 2013, Berger and his team made their initial discovery, which piqued their curiosity and led them to further investigate the site. To their astonishment, they unearthed a burial ground within the cave, indicating that Homo naledi and potentially other primitive human ancestors utilized this space as a resting place for their deceased.

Ryo Katayama seems to have a particular motif for his 2023 works, since, after “Unknown”, that realistically explores the lives of bit actors in the Japanese movie industry, “Meandering” focuses on the lives of painters and the struggles they face in order to become known and make a living out of their art.
“Meandering” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
Michio is such a man, who, despite wishing to become a painter, he instead works collecting big trash along Muto, his senior and his only friend. Michio has essentially left his art behind but Muto's insistence for him to continue to pursue it and to finally get a girlfriend, eventually pay off when he pushes him to both exhibit his paintings in a café and to start talking to Sachi, a girl they meet by chance during their work. Sachi is soon proved to be more than just a love interest,...

The eight-episode Quarterback, Netflix’s first partnership with the NFL and produced by Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, features unprecedented access to Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins and Marcus Mariota both on and off the field during the 2022 season as the NFL allowed the quarterbacks to be mic’d up for every single game,...

As we have mentioned many times before, films about films are one of the new trends of Asian cinema, with the Japanese movie industry in particular being quite active in the category. It is also interesting that local productions deal with film workers very rarely mentioned anywhere in essence, with “Extro” focusing on extras and “Uzumasa Limelight” on a stuntman. Ryo Katayama's “Unknown” also moves down the same path, by dealing with bit actors who try to survive while keeping their passion for acting alive.

Bob Dylan is lending his personal touch to James Mangold’s upcoming film about the timeless music icon.
Made clear not to be called a biopic, Mangold recently appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast to discuss how his film “A Complete Unknown”, which stars “Dune” actor Timotheé Chalamet as the influential musician, focuses more on a “specific moment” in the legendary singer-songwriter’s life in the 1960s folk scene in New York City.

“The best true-life movies are never cradle to grave but they’re about a very specific moment,” Mangold expressed to host Josh Horowitz.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

It’s been 15 years since Liam Neeson revitalized his career with the surprise hit Taken. And ever since, Neeson has been taking advantage of his new gruff action persona, lending his acting gravitas to action movies where he would dabble in gunplay and occasional fisticuffs. That’s not to say the Irish actor has been slumming entirely. The Academy Award-nominated actor has still been able to fit in films like Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Steve McQueen’s Widows to keep scratching his thespian itch. Now, Neeson is back in the driver’s seat in the trailer for his new action thriller, Retribution.
The official synopsis from Lionsgate reads,
Liam Neeson stars in Retribution, an immersive ticking-clock thriller that straps audiences in for a high-octane ride of redemption and revenge. When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the...
