Streaming services are the bane of my existence. It’s 2024 and there are so many options that it makes my head spin. Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Prime Video, Peacock cover the main streamers but that’s not counting the niches. Like old cartoons? Check out Boomerang. Like anime? Then Crunchyroll is for you. But what about horror fans? Sure, Hulu has its “Into the Dark” label and Netflix is always releasing something horror-related (though I question the quality.) And the horror genre features multiple options with Screambox, Arrow Player, Full Moon Features, and even Tubi. But the subject of today’s spotlight is the best of them all, with a great Ui and wonderful selection of films, nothing can compete with Shudder.

How much would you pay for a chance to speak one more word to those you’ve lost? A cursory viewing of “Baghead,” another addition to the cinematic world of ghosts, might suggest such a premise to be the central focus of this unremarkable horror outing. Yes, that notion is undoubtedly part of the narrative, but just as much attention is placed on those who’ve been lost as those who are desperate to see those faces one more time. Either way, any focus the film places doesn’t go anywhere special.

Alberto Corredor's Baghead is the most recent example of "well, that would have been better as a short film." Mainly because, well, it is better as a short film. Corredor adapts the truncated version of Baghead written by Lorcan Reilly into the scattershot feature now on Shudder. New screenwriters Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire struggle to extend the fifteen-minute original into an engaging hour and a half, especially during its bloated second act. Corredor crisply accentuates the mildewy and eerie atmosphere that saturates an outdated basement architecture, but by the end, falls victim to the usual follies that come with shorts-turned-features unable to sustain their big-screen treatments.

Director Alberto Corredor expands his own award-winning 2017 short for this original British horror. In addition to delivering a steady flow of creepy chills, it also has significant franchise potential, and if that happens, sales of potato sacks are going to go through the roof come Halloween time.
Baghead is set in present-day Berlin, where cash-strapped 20-something Iris (The Witcher’s Freya Allan) inherits a large run-down pub, after the horrific death of her estranged father, Owen (Peter Mullan). The manager of her father’s estate is keen to offload the property, but Iris decides to stay, inviting her best friend Katie (Bridgerton’s Ruby Barker) to join her.

is a horror film directed by Alberto Corredor starring Freya Allan and Jeremy Irvine.
“Baghead” is one of those gothic horror movies with witches and legend stories reaching out to the characters from a bygone era. It might be that the effects do not work, the actors do not fully believe the script, or simply, we have seen similar stories too many times before. Simply put, a horror movie that fails to scare or fully develop.
Plot
A girl inherits an old pub from her deceased father that, coincidentally, comes with an extra: in the basement, there’s a witch that allows to communicate with the dead. The girl discovers that it’s she who controls the witch and she starts to unveil the ancient history of the witch.

While watching Baghead, the movie reminded me a lot of the film Talk to Me. The name Baghead literally gives away what the movie is about—it’s about someone who wears a bag on their head. This someone lives in the basement of a rundown pub, a place with historical significance. This pub used to belong to Iris’ father, who tried to burn it down. Surprisingly, he ended up burned dead, but the Baghead is still very much alive and residing in the basement. Now, the pub belongs to Iris. But who is this Baghead? Why does it stay in the basement? And will Iris make it out alive or end up like her father? Let’s find out together.

Baghead is the latest offering of rules-based horror. As in, the characters follow specific rules and maybe they can survive their uncanny predicament. Alberto Corredor’s first long feature, an adaptation of his own short film of the same name, wastes no time establishing the system in which his characters must struggle. Admittedly, the high concept here is convoluted and also not executed to its fullest, but the film still manages to brew up some creepy moments as well as deliver an intriguing, not to mention fearsome antagonist.
Freya Allan (The Witcher) plays Iris, the struggling protagonist of Baghead. After losing her apartment, Iris inherits her estranged father’s (Peter Mullan) pub following his sudden passing. Soon enough, the young heir is offered a fat wad of cash by Jeremy Irvine’s desperate and frazzled character, Neil, in exchange for access to the pub’s basement and the “woman” living down there.

Review: I always get excited whenever Shudder is releasing a new film to their streaming service that I know next to nothing about. Add in a recognizable actor and I’m ready for whatever comes my way. So Baghead had me interested with its vague title and inclusion of Freya Allan (who I love in The Witcher). The trailer made it look like a creepy look at the living’s relationship with death. And the original short film was creepy as hell! So I then proceeded to go on a journey of intrigue that was completely ruined by terrible storytelling and bad CGI.

Directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, the acclaimed horror Late Night With The Devil is arriving in UK cinemas next month. More here.
So far, 2024 has been a rotten year for horror films. Both Night Swim and Baghead left a lot to be desired in the scares department, but there is hope yet.
Late Night With The Devil, which had its world premiere South by Southwest Film Festival in 2023 and screened at the BFI London Film Festival last year too, has picked up UK distribution with Vertigo Releasing.
Vertigo are releasing the David Dastamalchian -starring horror into cinemas in March.
Take a look at the Late Night With The Devil trailer below.
Sold! The film looks thoroughly terrifying and we’re always fans of anything that adopts a groovy 70s aesthetic. The film also holds an impressive 100% Rotten Tomatoes critic score at the time of writing. The film was so...

To celebrate the release of Baghead, the new horror film opening in UK cinemas this weekend, we had the pleasure of chatting with the film’s cast and filmmaker to find out more about this terrifying but thoughtful film that has more than just scares.
Following the death of her estranged father, Iris (Freya Allan) learns she has inherited a run-down, centuries-old pub and becomes inextricably tied to an unspeakable entity that resides in the pub’s basement – Baghead – a shape-shifting creature that can transform into the dead. Two thousand in cash for two minutes with the creature is all it takes for desperate loved ones to ease their grief. Neil (Jeremy Irvine), who has lost his wife, is Iris’ first customer. Like her father, Iris is tempted to exploit the creature’s powers and help desperate people for a price. But she soon discovers breaking the two-minute rule can have terrifying consequences.

Freya Allan clearly hasn’t gotten her fill of working on material that involves magic and monsters with her role on the Netflix series The Witcher, as she also has the lead role in the new horror film Baghead, which is set to reach theatres in the UK this Friday, January 26th. With that release date swiftly approaching, a short clip from Baghead has made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above. In this clip, we see Allan’s character checking out a creepy basement.
First announced four years ago, Baghead went into production in late 2021 and is a feature expansion of director Alberto Corredor’s 2017 short of the same name. Scripted by Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire, the film has the following synopsis: After the death of her estranged father, Iris learns she has inherited a run-down, centuries-old pub. This year’s first new theatrical release for the horror genre was Universal, Blumhouse and producer James Wan’s Night Swim, which we’ve learned is headed home this week.

Universal, Blumhouse and co-producer James Wan took us for a Night Swim in theaters over the weekend, with the Bryce McGuire-directed horror movie becoming the genre’s very first theatrical release of the new year. Was it a strong start for the horror genre, you ask?
Night Swim debuted in 3,250 theaters across the United States over the weekend, opening to $12 million domestically. Worldwide, the film scared up $17.6 million in its debut.
Here’s the day-to-day breakdown here in the United States:
Friday, January 5: $5,250,000 Saturday, January 6: $4,180,000 Sunday, January 7: $2,570,000
For the sake of comparison, Blumhouse’s M3GAN was released in January of last year, and the viral appeal of the title character drove the film to a $30 million domestic opening. Granted, nobody in their right mind expected Night Swim to perform the way M3GAN did.
Other recent Blumhouse releases and their domestic opening weekend totals include Five Nights at Freddy’s...
