Before construction began on DreamWorks Land, the newest addition to Universal Studios Florida, Dean Orion found himself on a typical walk around the grounds of the theme park. As he approached what was then known as the KidsZone — the park’s earliest strategy for catering to their youngest guests with classic IP attractions like Fievel’s Playland, Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster and Curious George Goes to Town — the sound of a child shouting caught his attention.
Around a marquee tied to a DreamWorks meet-and-greet, a young girl around 10 years old was begging her mother to get a picture in front of a poster of Shrek. “People grew up with Shrek when they were kids. Now they’re having their own families, and what do they do? When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

Like the hair of a Chia pet Troll doll, the "Trolls" franchise seems to never stop growing. The glittery DreamWorks reimagining of Thomas Dam's ugly-cute collectibles kicked off in 2016 with the music-filled animated adventure movie "Trolls." Since then, the movie has spawned two sequels, two holiday specials, two TV shows, a series of short films, and countless toys and tie-ins. It's also picked up an Oscar nomination (for Justin Timberlake's song "Can't Stop the Feeling!") and a cool $600 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo) despite one of its three installments debuting during pandemic lockdown.
The "Trolls" movies are successful, but they aren't exactly the most coherent kids' movie franchise around. If you're anything like me, you've likely caught bits and pieces of several movies, potentially out of order, when the little ones in your life decided to watch (and rewatch ... and rewatch) them. The series...

Cuddly Kung Fu master Po the Panda returns to the big screen for a fourth instalment of the animated action comedy franchise, eight years after Kung Fu Panda 3. Unfortunately, it’s fair to say that the law of diminishing returns has very much kicked in, because while the film is entirely amiable, it doesn’t quite deliver the same punch, and frequently feels like it’s going through the motions.
The film begins in the Valley of Peace, where Po (Jack Black) is content with his life as the legendary Dragon Warrior, occasionally defeating the odd villain with his sweet kung-fu skills and using his standing in the community to open a tofu-and-noodle shop.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” director Mike Mitchell gravitates toward villains that can “reflect the hero.” And that’s something that he leaned into with the Chameleon, a threatening two-and-a half foot shape shifter voiced by Oscar winner Viola Davis, who is the nemesis of Jack Black’s titular panda Po in the latest installment of the DreamWorks Animation franchise.
In the movie, which Universal opens in theaters this weekend, “Dragon Warrior” Po is instructed to find a successor as he moves to a new role as spiritual leader in the Valley of Peace when a formidable foe appears, threatening the village. “The Chameleon is a little character who has been underestimated and that’s similar to Po, who has been underestimated,” says Mitchell, whose directing credits include Dwa’s “Trolls” and “Shrek Forever After.” “Who would think that a roly poly panda could ever become a Kung Fu master?”

Jack Black’s Po is back after nearly a decade, and he’s already receiving a hero’s welcome from audiences.
Kung Fu Panda 4 opened to a stellar $58.3 million domestically, well ahead of expectations and a near-series best in a win for the family marketplace, as well as for DreamWorks Animation and parent company Universal (the studio behind Sunday’s Academy Awards frontrunner Oppenheimer). The only other Kung Fu Panda installment to open higher was the first one in 2008 with $62 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Along with Black, returning members of the Kung Fu Panda 4 voice cast include Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master Shifu, James Hong as Po’s adoptive father, Bryan Cranston as Po’s birth father Li and Ian McShane as Shifu’s former student and arch-nemesis.
Series newcomers include Viola Davis as a tiny lizard and shapeshifting sorceress and Awakawfina as a quick-witted thief...

“Kung Fu Panda 4” is all about change, which makes sense given the eight-year gap in DreamWorks Animation’s nearly $2 billion comedy-adventure franchise. In the latest sequel, Jack Black’s endearing martial arts panda-turned-Dragon Warrior, Po, assumes the role of spiritual leader and guides Awkwafina’s thieving gray Corsac fox, Zhen, to be his successor. However, he must battle Viola Davis’ The Chameleon, a shapeshifting sorceress lizard and crime lord who copies the kung fu moves of other masters.
Director Mike Mitchell, who came to “Kung Fu Panda” from “Shrek” and “Trolls” (although he contributed to the franchise), wanted to lean into the spirit of the first film while drawing parallels between Po and The Chameleon. “Whenever I work on a franchise, I always go back to that first movie,” he told IndieWire. “That’s my favorite one, and the thing that I loved about Po is he is so underestimated.

Po (Jack Black), the sad-clown-eyed, dude-speaking, dumpling-loving, dumpling-shaped whirling dervish of the “Kung Fu Panda” films, has a word to describe his favorite martial-arts move. More than that, it describes the exalted state inside him as he executes it. The word is “skadoosh.” Early on in “Kung Fu Panda 4,” Po is in the middle of a combat training moment when he asks, “Where’s the skadoosh?” It’s a meaningful question, because what he’s really saying is: You can fight all you want, but without the skadoosh, what’s the point?

After three death-defying adventures defeating world-class villains with his unmatched courage and mad martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Golden Globe nominee Jack Black), is called upon by destiny to … give it a rest already. More specifically, he’s tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. That poses a couple of obvious problems.
First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo diet, and second, he needs to quickly find and train a new Dragon Warrior before...

Last week, Slayer announced their unexpected reunion in the form of two major festival appearances.
The news came just five years after the thrash metal pioneers bid adieu with a celebratory farewell tour in 2019 — shows that certainly felt like a victory lap for the legendary band.
The relatively short-lived retirement has apparently drawn skepticism from some fans, prompting the wife of singer-bassist Tom Araya, Sandra, to make a public statement on social media to inform the “trolls” that she, in fact, convinced Tom to get the back together and that the final decision ultimately came down to him.
“Let’s clarify for the trolls: Tom was done with playing,” wrote Sandra on Instagram [via Blabbermouth]. “I have harassed him for over a year. He agreed Finally. We shared that news with Slayer’s awesome managers and they did the rest! So yes without Tom it wouldn’t have happened.. without me Bugging...

“Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

*Nsync has returned to the scene in more ways than one. In September 2023, the beloved boy band presented the Best Pop award to Taylor Swift at the VMAs — 10 years after the five men last gathered for a public appearance.
Then, in November 2023, *Nsync walked the purple carpet to celebrate the premiere of Trolls Band Together. They recorded “Better Place” for the animated musical comedy’s soundtrack.

As DreamWorks Animation shifts to a new production-sharing model with Sony Pictures Imageworks (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), we get a taste of the studio’s indie vibe at its best with “Orion and the Dark” (co-produced with Netflix and currently streaming). It’s an imaginative fantasy-adventure about confronting adolescent fears, thanks to the mind-bending script by Charlie Kaufman (“Anomalisa“).
“I think Kaufman’s whimsy and humor are brilliant for this family film space,” producer Peter McCown told IndieWire. “I think it’s a great match and I hope that he continues in this space.”
Kaufman spent about a year adapting Emma Yarlett’s 2014 children’s picture book about a fear-conquering adventure involving the titular adolescent and Dark, his nemesis, setting it in ’90s Philadelphia and making Orion (Jacob Tremblay) a neurotic, artistic fifth grader and Dark (Paul Walker Hauser) a hulking, insecure figure with an existential crisis. It might be more than just a Trolls soundtrack song.
In an interview with Kelly Clarkson for her talk show Monday, Justin Timberlake teased that he and the *Nsync boys — Jc Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick — have been making music.
“We’ve been in the studio,” Timberlake told Clarkson. “So there may be a little something in the future.”
Timberlake nodded after the crowd erupted in applause. Before then, he reflected on how quickly the guys picked things back up when they made “Better Place” for Trolls Band Together last year.

Justin Timberlake released his new single “Selfish” on January 25. It’s the lead single from his forthcoming album “Everything I Thought It Was,” which is his first new collection since “Man of the Woods” six years ago. Do you think the song sounds like a potential Grammy winner for the artist after so much time away? Watch the official music video above.
Timberlake is a 10-time Grammy winner across his career, but he only received one nomination for his “Man of the Woods” era: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for his Chris Stapleton-assisted top-10 hit single “Say Something.” The last time he won an award from the Recording Academy was Best Visual Media Song for “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from “Trolls,” a prize he shared with co-writers Max Martin and Shellback.

Nearly six months after its release, and perfectly timed to its powerful awards momentum, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal), now renting for $5.99 ahead of its unannounced Peacock debut, repeats as #1 at iTunes and Google Play this week.
Both platforms rank by transactions. “Trolls Band Together,” also Universal and still renting at $19.99, is #1 at Vudu, where revenue determines the top 10. They list “Oppenheimer” #3, tops among lower-priced entries, reinforcing its draw. “Trolls” is second at iTunes, #5 at Google Play.
“Society of the Snow,” a stealth Oscar contender from Spain director J.A. Bayona, is #2 at Netflix — besting its high-profile originals “Maestro” and “May December,” both of which ranked for only a few days and at lower positions.
“Snow,” which is Spain’s Oscar submission, is following the path of “All Quiet on the Western Front” last year as a non-English language success on the platform. It’s just behind “The Equalizer 3” for the second week,...

Netflix in the United States and several other regions will be getting several high-profile DreamWorks and Illumination movies in the first window in the coming year and beyond. Below, we preview what movies are on the way and when they’ll likely be on Netflix.
Please note: This list primarily covers Netflix in the United States. Other region’s availability of DreamWorks and Illumination titles will vary. We also won’t be covering back catalog DreamWorks and Illumination titles that will regularly rotate on and off of Netflix. Use our coming soon section for more on those.
In case you missed it, since 2022, Netflix has shared the first window rights to Universal’s animation lineup with its own streaming service, Peacock. The terms of this deal means that, in the United States, a movie will spend four months in theaters before heading to Peacock for four months,...

If you had your TV on this weekend and weren’t watching football, chances are decent that you might have caught a recent hit movie instead. There’s nothing unusual in that, but the difference is that not only does that hit-watching possibility extend to VOD rentals and downloads, but also when it comes to new picks at Netflix.
With a slew of newly available titles from four other top studios, the streamer (with “The Equalizer 3” as #1) is increasingly relying on non-original feature film product to earn those eyeballs. It’s not surprising that Denzel Washington’s latest “Equalizer” effort is #1. Netflix has become Sony’s streaming service, and four months after its theatrical release, it’s a quite recent film available for subscribers.
It is noteworthy, however, how often Warner Bros. is turning over key films to the streamer that they might otherwise have exclusively played on their own Max service.

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon: Part One — Child of Fire” replaced “Leave the World Behind” as No. 1 this week on Netflix’s Top 10 Movie list. But the big news here is that Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” considered a prime awards contender and given a nationwide, four-week theatrical release, dropped off the list after only four days.
Among new releases on PVOD, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (Lionsgate) placed No. 1 at Vudu and Google Play, second at iTunes (where the reduced-price “Oppenheimer” returned to No. 1). “Trolls Band Together” (Universal) placed No. 2 at Vudu, but lower elsewhere.
It may be unfair to judge the response equivalent to broader interest genre titles like the sci-fi “Rebel Moon.” We don’t expect highly acclaimed specialized titles to compete on equal footing in theatrical box office lists.
Still, “Maestro,” positioned as Netflix’s top contender among several acclaimed releases, with Cooper...

Two of the most joyous cinematic moments of the year came when unlikely characters raised their voices in song. In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Jack Black brought the house down as Bowser with his plaintive plea to “Peaches.” And Ryan Gosling stole the show in “Barbie” with his declaration of independence, “I’m Just Ken.” Sure, both tones hit our collective funny bones but they also get to our hearts.
“Peaches” is a power ballad sung by Bowser at the piano in his lair. He confesses his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and reveals the motives behind his villainous activity — “everything I do, I do it for you” vibes. He is desperate to win the Princess’ hand in marriage because he loves her. Black’s voice is perfect for the song as his passion increases into a mad crescendo. It’s easily the best and most memorable part of the movie.

The weekend before Christmas only saw one new nationwide studio release, and while it may have underperformed compared to expectations, it’s likely to add to the holiday business as theaters fill up in the week following Christmas Day. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Ahead of the holiday business boom, Warner Bros. opened the family musical comedy “Wonka,” starring Timothée Chalamet as Roald Dahl‘s Willy Wonka, into 4,203 theaters on Friday after it racked up a respectable 83% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. Directed by Paul King (“Paddington”), the movie co-starred Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, Kagan Michael-Key, Rowan Atkinson, relative newcomer Calah Lane and more.
“Wonka” made $3.5 million in Thursday previews and $14.4 million on Friday (including those previews) with an estimated $39 million for the weekend. That may be below some expectations but is par for the course over the past few weeks. “Wonka” received an “A-” CinemaScore, the...

Oompa loompa doopity doo — here is a box office opening for you. “Wonka” is off to a promising start in North America after earning $14.4 million across Friday and preview screenings. Playing in 4,203 locations, the prequel musical drawing from the twisted Roald Dahl character is also benefiting from golden ticket prices for premium large format auditoriums like Imax.
Heading into the weekend, “Wonka” was projecting a $35 million debut. It’d be a so-so start for the Warner Bros. release, which carries a hefty $125 million production budget and devoted more funds to a month-plus marketing spree (led by star Timothée Chalamet in the first fully-fledged promotional push for a feature since the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike).
The sweeter news for “Wonka” is that it’s coming in north of recent musical offerings that have floundered in theaters, such as Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” ($10.5 million opening) and Warner’s...

After taking in $3.5 million in Thursday previews, Wonka looks to take in ten times that in its opening weekend for an estimated $35 million. While that number comes in shy of the $40 million tracking saw this one hitting earlier in the week (and way shy of the $45 million I thought it could hit in our predictions from Thursday), this feels like a Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Greatest Showman scenario. Each one of those movies began their lives with underwhelming debuts only to enjoy steady numbers in the weeks after they were released. Wonka feels like that type of movie, a big budget musical filled with magical elements that is basically (if not fully) a prequel to a movie that nearly everyone has seen. Add to that some solid reviews (including a 7/10 from our own Chris Bumbray), a Golden Globe Nomination for Timothee Chalamet’s lead performance and...
