Despite an ongoing SAG strike, which could mean that the event features no major stars, the Venice Film Festival announced an incredibly star-studded slate of films for 2023. Seriously, even by Venice standards, the festival features an absolutely ridiculous number of major films that will have an impact on the rest of the year, especially during awards season. And one of the most anticipated is the latest from Wes Anderson, the short “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” which is expected to have its debut out of competition.

The lineup for the 80th Venice International Film Festival has been unveiled, with the likes of David Fincher, Michael Mann, Yorgos Lanthimos, Ava DuVernay, and Bradley Cooper all competing for the Golden Lion, one of the most coveted prizes in cinema.
Films in the main competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival include some major ones, many of which are hoping to be hits at the Oscars as well: Fincher is bringing thriller The Killer, while Lanthimos has sci-fi dramedy Poor Things. DuVernay has the drama Origin, while both Mann and Cooper have biopics in Ferrari (about Enzo Ferrari) and Maestro (Cooper also plays Leonard Bernstein). Two movies whose directors are likely to draw protests, Woody Allen’s French-language “Coup de Chance” and Roman Polanski’s “The Palace,” will make their world premieres at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera and La Biennale di Venezia president Roberto Cicutto announced at a Tuesday morning press conference.
Both films will screen out of competition, though they’ll likely draw an inordinate amount of attention at a festival that has assembled a robust lineup of major filmmakers even as it struggles with the effects of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.
Films booked for the Venice main competition include Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro”; Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi drama “Poor Things”; Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley film “Priscilla”; Michael Mann’s auto-racing film “Ferrari”; Ava DuVernay’s “Origin,” with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Niecy Nash-Betts and Vera Farmiga; and David Fincher’s “The Killer,” with Michael Fassbender.

Wes Anderson, the acclaimed director of ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and ‘Isle of Dogs’, is bringing his latest project to the Venice Film Festival. ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar’, a short film based on the eponymous story by Roald Dahl, will have its world premiere out of competition at the prestigious event.
The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, a wealthy gambler who learns to see through cards after practicing a form of meditation. He then decides to use his newfound ability for philanthropic purposes, opening a series of orphanages around the world with his winnings. The film also features Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl, the author and narrator of the story, as well as Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade in supporting roles.

Updated, 1:53 Am: Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, what the Venice Film Festival may lack in star acting talent turning up on the Lido, it certainly looks to be making up for in marquee directors — including what might prove to be some lightning-rod choices. Scroll down for the full list of titles announced this morning.
Revealing the lineup for the 80th edition today, fest chief Alberto Barbera said that the program already had been finalized by the time of the SAG-AFTRA work stoppage, and only lost one U.S. film, Challengers which had been due to open the proceedings.
All other American movies invited “have been confirmed and will be present in the festival,” he said. Those include a handful of competition titles from Netflix: the Bradley Cooper-helmed and starring Maestro, Pablo Larrain’s El Conde and David Fincher’s The Killer. The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre has condemned the late author’s antisemitic remarks in a new statement, saying that his “racism is undeniable and indelible.”
In a post on its website, the U.K. museum said it supports “the apology made in 2020 by the Dahl family and Roald Dahl Story Company for Dahl’s antisemitic views about Jewish people.” The statement will also be displayed on a panel outside the museum’s entrance in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire.
“We do not repeat Dahl’s antisemitic statements publicly, but we do keep a record of what he wrote and said in the Museum’s collection, so it is not forgotten,” the statement reads.
Since 2021, the museum said it has worked with the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council, the Community Security Trust and the Antisemitism Policy Trust to provide information and training for its staff.

From Barbie to Narnia.
Greta Gerwig, who will soon be in theaters with Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated Barbie movie, is attached to direct a feature film version of The Chronicles of Narnia books for Netflix, sources have told The Hollywood Reporter.
While no official announcement has been made, it has long been rumored that Gerwig, who worked with the streamer on the Noah Baumbach-directed White Noise, would tackle a Narnia movie. In a story about Mattel’s continuing Hollywood ambitions, the New Yorker reported that Gerwig has a deal to direct two films in author C.S. Lewis’ Narnia franchise.
Netflix did not respond to requests for comment.
In 2018, Netflix announced had acquired the film and TV rights to The Chronicles of Narnia book series. Said Ted Sarandos at the time. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re...

Despite “Asteroid City” receiving mixed-to-positive reviews, it appears Wes Anderson still has a ton of fans out there excitedly rushing to theaters to see his work, with the film earning a really solid opening weekend box office. However, while “Asteroid City” has only just hit theaters, all eyes are on what he has next, a new Netflix film, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” which is expected to arrive later this year.

Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” is in wide release this weekend (read our review), and as we’ve noted over the last few weeks, the filmmaker is moving at a quick pace never seen before in his career. 2022 and 2023 saw back-to-back Cannes premieres, “The French Dispatch” and “Asteroid City,” and later this year, he will release yet another film for Netflix, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” which is actually only 37 minutes long.

Wes Anderson is making 2023 special by adding two projects to his release calendar. The imaginative director’s Asteroid City touches down in theaters next week, and the filmmaker is busy bringing an adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar to Netflix. Many wonder how Anderson is pulling off two movies in a single year. However, there’s a simple explanation. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a relatively short feature. It’s 37 minutes long!
Speaking with IndieWire, Anderson revealed the adaptation’s brief runtime, saying he’s delighted to present something akin to the BBC series Play for Today. This series brings short-form filmmaking to a broad audience, with installments being an hour or less in length. “It’s not a feature film,” Anderson told the outlet. “It’s like 37 minutes or something. Wes Anderson announced in an interview with IndieWire that his upcoming Netflix movie “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” based on Roald Dahl’s 1977 short story collection, will only be 37 minutes long. The film is Anderson’s second Dahl adaptation after “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel and Ben Kingsley. Notably, “Henry Sugar” marks Anderson’s first Netflix original. He told IndieWire that collaborating with the streamer was more out of necessity than personal preference.
“In my case it’s a little bit of a weird thing,” Anderson said about partnering with Netflix. “I knew Roald Dahl since before we made ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox.’ I met Lindsay Dahl, his widow, when we were shooting ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ like 20 years ago. For years I wanted to do ‘Henry Sugar.’ They set this story aside for me because I was friends with them. Lindsay kind of handed the torch to Luke,...

Wes Anderson has explored many distinctive milieus over the years, from the fictional Zubrowska of “The Grand Budapest Hotel” to the bottom of the sea in “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” and “Isle of Dogs.” However, “Asteroid City” may be Anderson’s most personal backdrop yet, as its chief subject is storytelling itself.
A playful meta narrative that defies simple categorization, “Asteroid City” functions as three movies in one: It’s the colorful story of a Junior Stargazers convention in a midwestern desert town circa 1955, but it’s also a 1950s TV play called “Asteroid City,” and on top of that, a behind-the-scenes look at a troubled playwright (Edward Norton) working on the aforementioned play. There’s an alien played by Jeff Goldblum, but also Jeff Goldblum playing an alien. Got all that?

Wes Anderson said the real reason Bill Murray was forced to drop out of the filmmaker’s latest drama, “Asteroid City,” was due to Murray contracting Covid-19 and not because of on-set misconduct allegations against the actor that surfaced last year.
Asked by Indiewire about the allegations against Murray, Anderson said, “My experience with Bill is so extensive. Bill was such a great supporter of me from the very beginning. I don’t want to speak about somebody else’s experience, but he’s really part of my family. You know, he’s my daughter’s godfather. In fact, he actually baptized her. He’s the one who splashed the water.”

Bill was such a great supporter of me from the very beginning,” Anderson said. “I don’t want to speak about somebody else’s experience, but he’s really part of my family. You know, he’s my daughter’s godfather. In fact, he actually baptized her. He’s the one who splashed the water.”

It appears the grind never stops for Wes Anderson.
While the filmmaker is gearing up for next week’s release of his highly-anticipated comedy/drama “Asteroid City” followed by Netflix’s fall 2023 release of his adaptation of Road Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”, Anderson is already developing his next film, which Michael Cera has reportedly been cast in.
The project marks the 54-year-old director’s 13th feature, which The Film Stage reports has been greenlit to commence production later this year by “Asteroid City” cinematographer, Robert Yeoman.

Just weeks after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Wes Anderson‘s “Asteroid City” hits limited screens on June 16 before opening wide on June 23. That’s a good turnaround from premiere to theatrical release, but par for the course for Mr. Anderson. But the turnaround between “Asteroid City” and the director’s next project, “The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar” might be even more impressive.

While we’re just ten days away from Wes Anderson’s sci-fi western Asteroid City––a film that is very much worth the wait––the director is already in various stages on his next projects. This fall will see the Netflix release of The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, the director’s 12th feature and second Roald Dahl adaptation, which brings together Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade. Following that there’s been word of a 13th feature in the works, and confirmation has finally arrived.
While speaking with cinematographer Robert Yeoman about Asteroid City, we learned production will begin later this year on the mysterious project, though he doesn’t have any more details to share. “I’m out of the loop on that one. It’s been two years since “The French Dispatch” hit theaters, but the wait for a new Wes Anderson movie is almost over. “Asteroid City,” the auteur’s science fiction-twinged 11th film, premieres in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this week before expanding into theaters nationwide next month. To mark the occasion, Focus Features has released a new clip that shows some of the film’s incredible ensemble cast in action.
“Asteroid City” sees Anderson returning to the midcentury setting of “Moonrise Kingdom” to tell the story of a fictional desert town hosting an annual “Junior Stargazer and Space Cadets” convention on “Asteroid Day.” The local holiday commemorates the day that a meteor struck the town’s location in 3,007 B.C.

When you think of Rupert Friend, chances are you remember his five seasons as CIA operative Peter Quinn on “Homeland” or his turn as the Grand Inquisitor on “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” But recently he’s become the latest member of Wes Anderson’s acting troupe, following up his role in 2021’s “The French Dispatch” with the Cannes Palme d’Or contender “Asteroid City” and the Roald Dahl anthology “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” now in post-production at Netflix. Wes Anderson has kept busy the last few years. While putting the finishing touches on The French Dispatch as the pandemic hit––causing the film’s delay for over a year––he was also developing two more movies, both of which will arrive this year. It seems like far too long since we've gotten a Wes Anderson movie. Sure, "The French Dispatch" came out in 2021, but let's be honest and admit that 2021 feels like ten years ago. Regardless, his signature style that blends realism and fantasy has been missed, but thankfully, we won't have to wait too much longer to see him back in action.
"Asteroid City," the director's 11th film, has finally released its first look, and it looks to be another must-see. While not too much of the story is given in this new look, it does give us glimpses of what we can expect to watch. In 1955, young people and their families from all over the country convene at a Junior Stargazer convention, where they all indulge in their shared interest of analyzing stars and constellations. However, every attendant has their own unique story to share, and they might be more intertwined...

Wes Anderson fans are about to be over the moon. The first trailer for “Asteroid City,” the Oscar-nominated “Royal Tenenbaums” and “Grand Budapest Hotel” director’s 11th feature film, has been released, giving fans their first look at the ensemble film ahead of its June theatrical premiere.
“Asteroid City” is named after its setting, a tiny town off the freeway and in the middle of the American desert. Set in 1955, the movie takes place during the town’s annual “Junior Stargazer and Space Cadet” convention, celebrated during “Asteroid Day,” which — according to Jeffrey Wright in the trailer — commemorates “September 23, 3,007 B.C.,” when a meteorite made impact in the town’s current location.
Anderson favorite Jason Schwartzman leads the cast of the film as a widowed father who gets stranded in the town with his four children and begs his father-in-law (Tom Hanks) to come get them. While there, he develops...

In desperate need of some twee whimsy? Because Wes Anderson’s new movie is on the way and the first trailer has crash landed on Earth (you can watch it above).
Set in the fictional desert town of the title, “Asteroid City” is set in 1955 and centers around the Junior Stargazers Convention, in which youthful astronomers gaze heavenward. A widower (Anderson regular Jason Schwartzman) gets stranded in the town with his kids when his car breaks down and becomes trapped with a bunch of other, perfectly Andersonian oddballs when the borders of the town are closed following a potential close encounter.
Joining Schwartzman are other returning Anderson players including Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Rupert Friend, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Jeff Goldblum, Fisher Stevens and Jarvis Cocker, alongside inaugural Anderson collaborators including Tom Hanks, Hope Davis, Maya Hawke, Rita Wilson, Margot Robbie, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau...

It’s been troubling times for Bill Murray since the reports of his inappropriate behavior on the set of Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, Being Mortal. The Ghostbusters star was hit with sexual misconduct allegations during filming and, as a result the studio behind it, Searchlight Pictures, pulled the plug with over 50% of the film already shot. Ansari was allowed to shop the film (and the footage) to other buyers, but in the end, there seemed to be no takers for what’s likely seen as a tainted project.
According to The Playlist (via Puck), as Ansari searched for another studio to take the movie over, the other actors involved, including Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer, had to be released from their contracts, as they had various other projects to shoot. As such, the film is dead in the water and seems unlikely to ever get finished.

This past weekend, anti-“cancel culture” activists got new ammunition after British newspaper The Telegraph reported that new editions of British children’s writer (and notorious antisemite) Roald Dahl have edited and changed the author’s original text to remove objectionable elements and make the books more inclusive.
Changes include removing the word “fat” from descriptions of characters like Augustus Gloop in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” making language in “The Twits” and “Matilda” more gender neutral, and adding lines like “There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that” to “The Witches.” Although Dahl is notorious for his racist, sexist, and antisemitic writing over the course of his life, the alterations to his work rubbed many the wrong way, with authors like Salman Rushdie calling it “censorship.”

There ought to be an obscure, multisyllabic German word for the very specific feeling of pride one can take in discovering cinema through one of the medium's more highly regarded classics. There are those among us who had something of a cinematic awakening while watching an indelible classic such as, say, "Citizen Kane," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Persona," "The Rules of the Game," or "The General." Conversely, there ought to be a similar term for the mixture of pride and embarrassment one feels when their cinematic awakening is instigated by something obscure or unknown. "2001" may be a great piece of cinema. But surely someone in the world fell in love with movies the first time they saw Tony Richardson's 1961 film "A Taste of Honey," or Russell Mulcahy's "Highlander 2: The Quickening."
Actor Ben Kingsley, to offer a brief introduction, is undoubtedly one of the best actors of his generation...

“Anatomy of a Scandal” star Rupert Friend has signed on to star as famed Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache in “The Yellow Tie,” an upcoming biopic of Celibidache’s life, Variety can exclusively reveal.
Friend will have a central role in the feature, playing the young Celibidache. As Variety revealed last year, John Malkovich is also signed on to play an older version of the conductor.
The duo last appeared on screen together in 2004’s “The Libertine,” in which Johnny Depp also starred as the Duke of Rochester. Friend has also appeared in features including “Hitman: Agent 47” and “The Death of Stalin.” He will next be appearing in “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.
Serge Ioan Celebidachi, the conductor’s son, will direct “The Yellow Tie” based on a screenplay he co-wrote with James Olivier.
Robert W. Cort has also boarded the biopic as an executive producer.

This article contains some spoilers for Spider-man: No Way Home
Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon have just made one of the highest-grossing movies of all time! What are they going to do next? Well, the answer probably isn’t “Go to Disneyland,” because Disney has likely already brought their biggest money-makers to the happiest place on earth. But the talents behind 2021’s most popular movie Spider-Man: No Way Home certainly have a lot of good work ahead of them!
Tom Holland
Before swinging into Captain America: Civil War as Spider-Man, Tom Holland impressed viewers by playing Billy Elliot on stage and a teenager surviving a tsunami in J.A. Bayona’s The Impossible. Holland’s natural charm and youthful wit made him a pleasing screen presence. But as Peter Parker graduates high school and moves onto the real world, it’s clear that Holland is ready for more complex and adult roles.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s production company SunnyMarch is being sued over the rights to a Roald Dahl script, Variety can reveal.
SunnyMarch, whose directors are Cumberbatch and his producing partner Adam Ackland, entered into a co-production agreement with Portobello Productions in November 2019 to make a film adaptation of Dahl’s novel “Danny the Champion of the World.”
Cumberbatch was also set to star in the film as Danny’s father William, subject to his availability and approval of the script.
After commissioning and paying “One Day” writer David Nicholls to pen a first draft, however, Portobello allege they heard nothing further from Cumberbatch or Ackland, despite both men taking on numerous other projects, which are listed in the court filings, including “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “The Power of the Dog,” for which Cumberbatch could possibly win an Oscar next month.
According to the agreement, the two companies planned to hire...

First published in 1977, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More” is a collection of seven short stories crafted by British author Dahl for older children. Cumberbatch will play Henry Sugar, the protagonist of the titular story, which poses the question: “If you could see with your eyes closed…would you use your power for good or for personal gain?”
The new movie marks Anderson’s second outing with Dahl’s classic works after the filmmaker crafted “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” into a stop-motion film in 2009 and co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach. The best...
