There is no doubt that Fox has always been killing it with sitcoms that have become our favorite ones. These include Married... with Children, That '70s Show and the biggest animated hits in TV history, the cultish The Simpsons and Family Guy.
However, the network is also notorious for unfair cancellations of fan-favorite shows, and the sitcom we’re going to talk about also fell victim to Fox executives. However, it’s still hailed by fans who claim it was axed painfully right at its peak.
The show centers on Mickey, a reckless slacker who is intelligent but clearly lacks ambition. She spends her days hustling and looking for easy money, and that’s why she comes to her estranged, but wealthy sister, but there is a surprise waiting for her.
The sister and her billionaire husband flee to avoid a federal indictment, leaving Mickey with their three ill-mannered children.

A new report in Variety lays out a detailed argument from British screenwriter Simon Stephenson alleging that the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Focus Features’ widely praised “The Holdovers” is extremely similar to his own 2013 Black List spec script, “Frisco” — and that, according to Stephenson, “Holdovers” director Alexander Payne likely read that script.
“The Holdovers” has only one credited screenwriter: David Hemingson, who was an entertainment lawyer before becoming a TV writer and producer in the late ’90s, working on shows such as “Just Shoot Me!,” “Kitchen Confidential,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23.” “The Holdovers” is his first produced feature.
IndieWire has reached out to Focus, WGA West, and to reps for Payne, Hemingson, and Stephenson, but has not yet received a response.
Stephenson is credited as a co-writer on Pixar’s “Luca” and received an “additional material” writing credit for “Paddington 2.” Working Title is developing his novel,...

Peacock is ready to get Laid.
The NBCUniversal-backed streamer has handed out a straight-to-series order for Laid, a comedy starring Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and from writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna.
Khan (Young Rock, Always Be My Maybe) and McKenna (Son of Zorn) are writing and exec producing the series for Universal Television, where the former’s Fierce Baby is based with an overall deal.
Laid revolves around a woman who finds out that her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her “sex timeline” to confront her past in order to move forward. Peacock says Laid is a “f—ked up rom-com where the answer to ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.’”

Filmmaker Alexander Payne doesn’t exactly have the corner on curmudgeonly Paul Giamatti performances, or unexpected road trip movies that result in deeply emotional bonds, or stories about found families, or even tales about high school teachers who really, really need to get their lives in order. Still, those do tend to be his most recognizable hallmarks.
They’re all on display in his latest, the Christmastime dramedy “The Holdovers,” which stars Paul Giamatti as, yes, a curmudgeonly high school teacher who needs to get his life in order, and ends up (sort of) doing that by way of an unexpected road trip and the forging of a found family (including Da’Vine Joy Randolph and newbie Dominic Sessa).
“The Holdovers” sounds like pure Payne, right? It is, but it’s also a David Hemingson effort, with the longtime television writer picking up his first film credit with the script, which...

More than three and half years have gone by since it was announced that Krysten Ritter would be re-teaming with Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchaka Khan (who went on to create Fresh Off the Boat after Don’t Trust the B- ended) for a dark comedy series based on author/stand-up comedian Charley Warady’s novel Serial Killers Anonymous. But while Khan has gone on to direct two feature films since that announcement – the rom-com Always Be My Maybe and the time travel slasher Totally Killer – there hasn’t been any further word on Serial Killers Anonymous. The Hollywood Reporter decided to ask Khan about the project while she was doing press for Totally Killer, and she told them there’s still a chance the dark comedy series could happen.
Khan was asked, “In 2020, it was reported that you and Krysten Ritter were reuniting for a dark comedy/serial killer series.

Totally Killer director Nahnatchka Khan has quietly become one of the preeminent comedic voices in town.
As the creator of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and Fresh Off the Boat, Khan took her sensibilities to feature films in 2019, helming the well-received Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. The rom-com, which starred Khan’s frequent collaborators Ali Wong and Randall Park, was embraced by 89 percent of critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and managed to make an impact in an overcrowded streaming market. Keanu Reeves’ role as a version of himself and his subsequent kiss-blowing meme certainly factored into Always Be My Maybe’s success, and it’s become one of the go-to examples of how Netflix has kept the rom-com alive in an era where the major studios no longer prioritize the genre.

If you look at Nahnatchka Khan's filmography, you won't see many titles suggesting she'd be a good fit for a bloody slasher movie. However, you will see plenty of titles that suggest she'd be ideal for a time traveling comedy about mothers and daughters, and how culture has shifted over the past 30 years. The fact that she can deliver a nasty slasher sequence in the new horror comedy "Totally Killer" will leave fans of her past work a little dizzy.
"Totally Killer" is built around one heck of a high concept pitch: What if a modern teen (Kieran Shipka), grieving the death of her murdered mother, goes back in time to the '80s to stop the killer's initial reign of terror, lower the body count, and ensure her mom's survival in the present? It's "Back to the Future" with a body count, leaning on '80s tropes without ever getting too nostalgic.

The movie tells the story of Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), a plucky teenager who uses a time machine to travel back to 1987 in an attempt to save her mother (who was killed in the present) and several of her mother’s friends (killed in 1987) – all at the hands of a masked murderer known as the Sweet Sixteen Killer. When the trailer for Totally Killer was released a few weeks ago, there was a bit of an uproar on social media claiming that the film was ripping off The Final Girls (review). While there are undoubtedly similarities between the two films, Nahnatchka Khan‘s horror comedy has far more in common with something like Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day films (specifically Happy Death Day 2U) than that 2015 film, aiming for a more absurdist, comedy-forward take on the “time travel slasher” sub-genre that apparently exists now. It’s also an incredibly charming little film that wears its influences on its sleeves and has so much fun with them in the hopes that you will too.

Disney CEO Bob Iger may be neck-deep in negotiations with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) this week, but his employees at Hulu continue to have an eye on saving the company money on his behalf. A new report from Vulture indicates that a large swath of classic TV series are leaving Hulu at the end of this month, including some shows that fans of ’90s TV will recognize instantly.
The good news in this latest round of cuts from Hulu is that it appears to be isolated to these shows, at least for now. Vulture reports that unlike content removals which occurred earlier this summer for Disney streamers, this latest batch is not intended as part of larger cost-cutting measures intended to bring immediate relief to the bottom line; rather, the shows being removed are coming to the end of their licensing agreements, and Disney has simply decided to...

Two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne returns to the big screen with his entertaining and crowd-pleasing film “The Holdovers” which debuted at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday night, where he was in-person to introduce.
With a 1970s aesthetic, a sharp script by David Hemingson, and a trio of exquisite performers, the film feels like the slam-dunk Oscar contender the establishment members of the Academy can get behind.
“The Holdovers” reunites Payne with his “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti. It tells the story of a curmudgeonly instructor at an elite New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the students with nowhere to go. He forms an unlikely bond with a damaged, brainy troublemaker (played by newcomer Dominic Sessa) and the head cook (portrayed by Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
It’s hard to believe Giamatti, 56, who’s been remarkable in movies such as “American Splendor” (2003), “Barney’s Version” (2010) and of course,...

One of the earliest success stories in the history of TV is “I Love Lucy,” which enjoyed six seasons atop the ratings. When the cast was ready to slow down a bit, audiences weren’t ready to see their favorite zany redhead leave altogether, so the 30-minute sitcom was retooled as 13 one-hour specials broadcast sporadically over three seasons, under a new name: “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
In the 70 years since, many TV shows have seen name changes before airing their first episodes. One of the most notorious is ABC’s attempt to soften the title of “You Can’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23,” which was shortened to the less-offensive “Apartment 23.” However, apparently that wasn’t quite as catchy, so they compromised with “You Can’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” ahead of its April 2012 premiere.

‘The Holdovers’ Trailer: Alexander Payne Reunites with Paul Giamatti in a Role ‘Tailor-Made for Him’
Alexander Payne is going back in time for his first film in six years.
Following 2017’s critically panned “Downsizing,” Payne returns to the big screen with “The Holdovers” starring “Sideways” alum Paul Giamatti almost exactly 20 years later. Payne’s eighth feature will be distributed by Focus Features.
“The Holdovers” follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them, a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa), and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (“The Idol” breakout Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
Payne directs the film from a screenplay by David Hemingson, who previously penned episodes of “Black-ish” and “Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23.” Focus Features handles the film’s U.

Everyone’s favorite ’70s movie is making a return to CBS, with a new spinoff of The Bad News Bears currently in development. The series is written by Corey Nickerson, who previously executive produced Black-ish, and co-created Fresh Off the Boat and Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23. The original 1976 film starred Walter Matthau as an alcoholic former professional baseball pitcher turned youth baseball coach. Its massive success spawned two sequels in rapid succession — 1978’s The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training and 1979’s The Bad News Bears Go To Japan. The film was remade in 2005, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Billy Bob Thornton in the seminal Matthau role of Coach Morris Buttermaker. It’s also not the first time the IP will be made into a TV series. Back in 1979, CBS aired a Bad News Bears series for two seasons, starring Jack Warden. But this is the...

Perhaps Maggie‘s titular psychic already saw this news coming: Hulu has cancelled the romantic comedy after just one season, TVLine has confirmed.
Although streamers rather famously do not disclose viewership/”ratings,” it is worth nothing that in the weeks since Maggie‘s July 6 debut, it has not once cracked the Top 10 on Nielsen’s weekly U.S. ranking of streaming originals (whereas Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building has been a steady presence).

James Van Der Beek has sued SiriusXM over a failed podcast deal.
The Dawson’s Creek alum filed a complaint for breach of contract in Los Angeles, claiming that SiriusXM agreed to a deal worth a minimum of 700k (£599k) for 40 podcast episodes.
According to Van Der Beek, the podcast would have explored his life as an actor and father.
Other financial terms outlined by the lawsuit, which was obtained by Entertainment Weekly, include a 153k (£130k) production budget and 50k (£42.7k) marketing budget, both recouped against revenue.
“The agreed-upon deal even provided [SiriusXM] with a first look so that [Van Der Beek] could not work on any other podcasts,” the suit reads. “Yet, after the project was green lit and several subsequent actions had been taken by [SiriusXM] to set the podcast up, Sirius and Stitcher reneged on the agreement and told [Van Der Beek] that they would not perform.”

People say never to judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to TV shows, sometimes it's just as important not to judge them by their titles. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," for example, doesn't exactly sound like the groundbreaking and celebrated hero's journey that it is. Other shows like "Selfie," "Cougar Town," and the eventually mercifully renamed "Scrotal Recall" (it's called "Lovesick" now) are also way better than their titles would lead one to believe.
The same is true of 2012's short-lived ABC comedy "Don't Trust the B----- in Apartment 23," an outrageous, surreal, fast-paced sitcom starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker, James Van Der Beek, and Eric Andre. Whereas some other titles oversell the wackier aspects of the shows in question, though, "Don't Trust the B" simply can't be tamed or contained by something as simple as a title.

Jessica Jones’s Krysten Ritter will tap into her ability for dark humor to play serial killer on a would-be comedy series.

Netflix's 13 Reasons Why has expanded its cast list for season two, and there are many faces that will seem familiar. Coach Rick, Liberty High's "beloved" coach, has a face we have definitely seen before. He is played by Australian actor Ben Lawson.
Lawson is no stranger to working on TV shows. Most recently, he worked with Kiefer Sutherland on ABC's ill-fated Designated Survivor, and his IMDb lists over 40 credits to his name! He has worked with a ton of strong female leads, from Katherine Heigl on the CBS series Doubt to fellow Netflix actor Krysten Ritter on the series Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23.

But when a new case takes her back home to Barrens, Indiana, the life Abby painstakingly created begins to crack. Tasked with investigating Optimal Plastics, the town's most high-profile company and economic heart, Abby begins to find strange connections to Barrens’ biggest scandal from more than a decade ago involving the popular Kaycee Mitchell and her closest friends—just before Kaycee disappeared for good.
