The current state of Star Wars television is divisive, to say the least. While shows like The Mandalorian and Andor made fans want to revisit a galaxy far, far away, other shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi made them remember why there hasn’t been a Star Wars movie in a while.
The latest series from Lucasfilm, The Acolyte, recently debuted with the first two episodes releasing on Disney+. However, audiences tore the show apart, and it currently has a 29% audience score, far lower than that of The Last Jedi, which has 41%.
The series has been seen as suspect ever since it was announced, from the way it was announced to the choice of showrunner to the decision to have it set during the unpopular High Republic era to some of the actors making derogatory statements without consequence. Star Wars: The Last Jedi directed by Rian Johnson remains one of the most divisive films in the epic space-opera franchise created by George Lucas. The film’s depiction and handling of Luke Skywalker’s character arc and changes made to his characterization from the original trilogy of films made under Lucas’ stewardship.

During the promotional events for the movie, actor Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker admitted to having fundamentally different opinions about the character from Johnson. As a result, Hamill denounced Johnson’s depiction of the character and argued that Lucas would never have made a mistake Johnson made in The Last Jedi.

George Lucas is often hailed as the founder of perhaps two of the most treasured franchises – Star Wars and Indiana Jones – in the realm of classics.
But while he may have birthed the globally astronomical Star Wars saga, Steven Spielberg was the one to alter the trajectory of the space opera film series with a single hire, albeit inadvertently so.

The cherry on the top, however, is that the person in question is someone who many fans, if not all, seem to loathe vehemently. Yikes.

Back in 1977, George Lucas released Episode IV – A New Hope to mark the beginning of a whole new era in the world of space operas. If anything, he made history and perfectly defined what cinematic masterpieces truly are with the first six movies (original and prequel trilogy) he curated the story for in the Star Wars saga. But then Disney acquired Lucasfilm, and that was that.

Ever since then, fans have gotten quite some remarkable pieces, but none come as close to perfection as the ones developed by Lucas. In fact, even George Lucas himself hasn’t had the best of praises for the projects that came afterward except for a few, with his review of the most controversial movie from the franchise, i.e., The Last Jedi, quite literally leaving fans in hysterics.

“The Acolyte,” Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, reached 4.8 million views in its first day of availability. This marks the streamer’s biggest series premiere of 2024, according to Disney.
An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte.” (Note: a “view” is calculated by dividing the number of hours each title is watched by its runtime.)
Variety critic Alison Herman likens “The Acolyte” to “Andor” and “The Last Jedi” for its “willingness to put its own spin on hallowed lore.” Additionally, her review noted that the series “propelled by plentiful action, much of it hand-to-hand combat heavily inflected with martial arts. Star Wars tends to enjoy the comfort of the known. As the galaxy has expanded on the big and small screens, new stories have been told in and around the original, prequel and sequel trilogies, featuring familiar faces and settings that the audience has had a connection to since childhood in most cases. There’s certainly nothing wrong with this level of familiarity. It’s something we all crave from time to time — and not just in Star Wars — be it a family recipe that’s been passed down through multiple generations, or an old, perfect-fitting sweatshirt that’s survived countless washes.
But there comes a time when viewers want to step into the unknown, and the latest Star Wars series, The Acolyte, offers exactly that. Set a century before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in the era of the High Republic, the Leslye Headland-created Disney+ series explores a time...

This article contains spoilers for The Acolyte episode 2.
What we know about the Jedi in Star Wars can — and has — filled not only several films and TV shows but a ton of books and comics, too. And, tellingly, one seclusive Jedi practice while introduced on screen in the films, was only given a name in the comic books. We’re talking about “the Barash Vow,” a Jedi tradition first explicitly mentioned in 2017 in issue #2 of Marvel’s first Darth Vader comic book miniseries. But, at this point, the Barash Vow is a big deal in Star Wars canon, having impacted the latter years of both Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
And, sneakily, this practice makes its way into the second episode of the newest Disney+ Star Wars TV series, The Acolyte. Here’s why the Barash Vow is such a big deal in Star Wars, why it appears in The Acolyte,...

The first two episodes of The Acolyte are now streaming on Disney+, and Lucasfilm's latest live-action Star Wars series certainly starts with a bang. You might even say it slays!
Major spoilers follow.
The premiere begins with mysterious masked warrior Mae (Amandla Stenberg) walking into a cantina and challenging Jedi Master Indara (Carrie -Anne Moss) to a duel. We've seen quite a bit of their ensuing battle in the various trailers and TV spots, but the outcome is sure to come as a shock to many viewers.
Unable to get the better of Indara in a fair fight, Mae resorts to throwing one of her blades at the bartender, and when her Jedi opponent uses the Force to stop the weapon before it strikes, the Dark-side assassin takes advantage of the distraction by flinging another knife into Indara's chest - killing her almost instantly.

The best Star Wars projects in recent years are the ones that stray from the original story.
From “Rogue One” to “The Last Jedi” to the animated “Visions” and last year’s “Andor,” the franchise finds its footing by taking risks and focusing on original stories that just happen to be set in a galaxy far, far away. With the middling quality of so many other Star Wars offshoots since Disney+ launched in 2019, Leslye Headland’s “The Acolyte” finds company, mercifully, in the former category, with an intriguing crime thriller set further back than any other live-action entry.
“The Acolyte” takes place even longer ago in the galaxy’s history, during the High Republic Era that preceded even young Anakin Skywalker in “The Phantom Menace.” It’s a time of peace, as the opening text says, but like all peaceful pockets in Star Wars, that gets interrupted. A violent crime...

Luke Skywalker is one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars universe, having played a central role in the original trilogy. Played by Mark Hamill, the original trilogy sees Luke training to become a full-fledged Jedi Knight and harnessing the ability to use the Force. In the end, Luke defeats the Empire seemingly becoming a Jedi in the process.
Luke Skywalker is one of the most popular Jedi Knights in Star Wars (Lucasfilm).
However, Dave Filoni, the executive producer of The Mandalorian, has debated Luke’s status as a Jedi. During an interview, Filoni spoke about Luke’s status and refused to believe that he had accomplished himself as a Jedi. Filoni’s claims will not only displease actor Mark Hamill but also disappoint fans. Here is what Filoni had to say about Luke not being a Jedi and why he is wrong.

Since Disney revived “Star Wars” in 2015 with J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens,” the strongest entries in the franchise have had one trait in common. Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” and Tony Gilroy’s “Andor” both opted to take the franchise in bold new directions, opening up exciting new possibilities for what a “Star Wars” story could be. “The Last Jedi” steered the core narrative away from the Skywalker family, implying that anyone could become a Jedi and, therefore, a hero. “Andor” used familiar settings as the backdrop for an adult political drama about rebellion and imperial administration, rejecting heroes entirely in favor of the individuals who make up mass movements. Fans may not always have seen them as such — “The Last Jedi” faced an infamous fan backlash, while “Andor” Season 1 paled in viewership to the likes of “The Mandalorian” — but these projects offered a lifeline to a saga...

Review: The reception for Disney-era Star Wars has been uneven, to say the least. While The Force Awakens broke box office records, The Last Jedi became the most divisive sequel of all time, and The Rise of Skywalker pooped the bed for most fans. Still, the anthology films Rogue One and Solo have dedicated fans, which is more than can be said for any of the Disney+ Star Wars series outside of The Mandalorian and Andor. George Lucas’ epic space opera franchise Star Wars has delivered three distinct trilogies. While Lucas was heavily involved in crafting the stories for the original and prequel trilogies, he seemingly did no have a role to play when the sequels were being made under Disney. As a result, they have received polarizing reactions from the fanbase.
George Lucas originally had a different vision for Star Wars: Episode VII.
Despite Lucas’ apparent lack of involvement in the sequels, some plot elements he had devised for his version of Star Wars: Episode VII did eventually make it into The Last Jedi. One major plot point that formed the core of The Las Jedi‘s narrative actually came from Lucas’ original plans for the first installment in the sequel trilogy, and here is everything you need to know in that regard.

Actor John Boyega starred in three of the extant 16 "Star Wars" movies*, playing the rogue-Stormtrooper-turned-good guy Finn in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2017), and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (2019). Boyega liked playing Finn, but has gone on record (notably in a 2020 GQ interview) about his disappointment with how the series treated his character; Finn was set up to be a leading man, and was sidelined for what appeared to be racism-based reasons. Boyega was also off-put by Disney's habit of micromanaging "Star Wars," feeling that every one of the franchise's actors ran the risk of being roped into "Star Wars" projects exclusively. "You ain't going to Disney+ me," he once laughingly said to Variety.
There hasn't been a "Star Wars" movie since 2019, as Disney+ kind of killed their Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs. The theatrical market was oversaturated, audiences didn't respond terribly well...

One of the most exciting things about "The Acolyte" is its return to elaborate action choreography. The prequels raised the bar for what "Star Wars" fight scenes could do, giving us Jedi jumps and flips that really sold the idea of the Jedi being awesome, superhuman warriors revered throughout the galaxy. Now, "The Acolyte" is bringing wuxia martial arts action to the franchise for a new type of Jedi choreography that we've never seen before — and judging from the first trailer, we are in for a treat. Indeed, there is one fight scene in "The Acolyte" that is trying to beat the Darth Maul fight from "The Phantom Menace" and give us the best fight scene in all of "Star Wars," according to Dafne Keen.
But making "The Acolyte" was not all serious business: there was also a lot of fun to be had — especially if you played a Jedi.

Since Disney has taken over “Star Wars,” there has been a narrative that women were not important to the George Lucas films or were not fans because it was a “male brand.” While “Star Wars” does tend to be a male-skewing audience, women have always been fans, and women have been in “Star Wars” since the beginning.
Now, George Lucas has said that not only were women important to his “Star Wars” films, but they were often the unsung heroes of the movies. He also calls out the recent idea that to be a hero, one needs to act and dress like a man.

Every fandom has its share of toxic elements, but it's probably fair to say that Disney-era Star Wars has experienced more negativity and backlash from a certain contingent of fans than any other franchise over the past few years.
There was the expected amount of pushback to Daisy Ridley being announced as the lead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it really picked up when her character, Rey, was deemed to be a "Mary Sue." The toxicity arguably reached a crescendo when Kelly Marie-Tran's Rose Tico was introduced in The Last Jedi, but the general perception among some fans that Star Wars has become too pandering in its representation and inclusivity continues.
With The Acolyte - a new Disney+ series from showrunner Leslye Headland featuring a primarily female cast - on the horizon, Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy acknowledged that coming aboard the franchise can be a "terrifying" experience for female filmmakers and actors.

Kathleen Kennedy Says Women Who Make ‘Star Wars’ Franchise Installments ‘Struggle’ with Male Fanbase
Even Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy is aware of the gendered bias surrounding “Star Wars” fans.
During an interview with the New York Times for upcoming Disney+ series “The Acolyte,” Kennedy admitted that female filmmakers “struggle” with fan backlash to their respective film and TV franchise installments. Leslye Headland is the showrunner for “The Acolyte.”
“Operating within these giant franchises now, with social media and the level of expectation — it’s terrifying,” Kennedy said. “I think Leslye has struggled a little bit with it. I think a lot of the women who step into ‘Star Wars’ struggle with this a bit more. Because of the fan base being so male-dominated, they sometimes get attacked in ways that can be quite personal.”

British singer James Blunt said that his friend Carrie Fisher’s death in 2016 came as she was “mistreating her body” to reprise her iconic role as Princess Leia and allegedly receiving pressure about her weight for her Star Wars return.
Blunt was at the Hay Festival in Hay-on-Wye, Wales over the weekend discussing his memoir, Loosely Based on a Made-Up Story, when he began to discuss Fisher, a close friend who he’d at one point lived with while writing his smash-hit debut album, 2004’s Back to Bedlam. The singer told the crowd about seeing Fisher the day before her death; she was found unresponsive on a plane, having had a heart attack and died days later on Dec. 27, 2016.
“I was with her the day before she died, when she came down to my house,” Blunt told the crowd. “And she’d been really mistreating her body, and she’d...

Carrie Fisher fell ill in December 2016 after collapsing shortly before her flight from London landed in Los Angeles. The Star Wars icon suffered a cardiac arrest and, after spending four days in intensive care, died at the age of 60 in hospital.
A coroner's report later found that Fisher had cocaine in her system, as well as traces of heroin, other opiates, and Mdma. However, it was unable to determine whether those contributed to her death.
The actress spent years struggling with substance abuse issues and Fisher's close friend and singer James Blunt has claimed Disney and Lucasfilm had put "pressure on her to be thin."
He and Fisher formed an unlikely friendship in the early 2000s and wrote his first album, 2004's "Back to Bedlam," while staying in her house. Following her death, he performed a tribute to the actress which we've embedded below in case you're curious.

Musician James Blunt recently said at the Hay Festival in Wales (via People) that his close friend Carrie Fisher faced tremendous pressure to be thin for “Star Wars” when she reprised her iconic role of Princess Leia in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Fisher previously told Good Housekeeping U.K. in 2015 shortly before “The Force Awakens” opened in theaters that she lost 35 pounds for the movie. She died one year later in December 2016 after going into cardiac arrest while flying from London to Los Angeles.
“She’d been really mistreating her body, and she’d just got the job again of being Princess Leia in a new ‘Star Wars’ movie,” said Blunt at the arts festival, where he was speaking about his memoir, “Loosely Based on a Made-Up Story.”

Carrie Fisher blamed Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens for Harrison Ford’s 2015 plane crash and her near-fatal car accident. She was convinced that the movie was cursed and even made a call to Mark Hamill to make sure that he was okay. Fisher returned to her role as Princess Leia in the film after 32 years in The Force Awakens and took some time to get settled in.

After working with George Lucas in the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, Mark Hamill found it a little uncomfortable to work with Irvin Kershner in the next film. Kershner directed The Empire Strikes Back, which is considered one of the best Star Wars movies ever. Hamill and Kershner often butted heads over the creative direction with the character of Luke Skywalker. Nevertheless, Hamill shared that they had a mutual respect for each other for being opinionated.

Nearly seven years after its release, one of the most controversial scenes in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues to be when Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master and veritable legend, tells the next generation about what the Jedi really represent. While training the franchise’s newest protagonist, Rey (Daisy Ridley), Mark Hamill’s now grizzled and ancient Luke intones, “The Jedi are romanticized, deified. But if you strip away the myth and look at their deeds, the legacy of the Jedi is failure; hypocrisy; hubris.”
The scene wasn’t taken well by some corners of the Star Wars fandom in 2017, and it’s not taken well now. Yet I’ve been thinking quite a bit about it in lieu of Disney+’s upcoming and hotly anticipated new Star Wars series, The Acolyte. “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker” were not well-received by fans, particularly due to aspects of Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey. Many fans felt that Rey’s development was too rapid and lacked logical explanation, and they were disappointed by revelations about her lineage and the expectations surrounding it.
Daisy Ridley has previously discussed her struggles with adjusting to newfound fame and handling the pressures of being part of the massive Star Wars fandom.
In her latest interview with The Times, Daisy Ridley revealed another aspect of her life impacted by Star Wars: her health. She detailed how the stress from shooting and traveling, which she was unaccustomed to before fame, led to her developing leaky gut syndrome.

"Star Wars" trilogies are a flat circle, and George Lucas was right when he said "it's like poetry, it rhymes." Much like the prequel trilogy, the sequel trilogy created incredible excitement and anticipation, with "The Force Awakens" trailer breaking viewership records and fans everywhere obsessing over every detail, every character, every quote. And much like the prequel trilogy, things went downhill quick, with the movies disappointing a lot of people, and fandom going nuts and bullying the cast and crew incessantly until they drove some of them off public appearances and the internet, and until they all but swear off the franchise they were once huge fans of.
Still, for a little while, the excitement was palpable and infectious, not just among fans but even press. For example: people only asked Andy Serkis, who played the "Star Wars" villain Snoke, about "The Force Awakens" when all he wanted was to talk about apes.

Actress Carrie Fisher became a global icon when she played Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars. The actress was twenty-one when the film was released and it immediately launched her into worldwide fame as the film became a phenomenon. Princess Leia was considered to be one of the best female characters in sci-fi.
Fisher was reportedly cast in the role of Leia after George Lucas considered multiple actresses. The late star was only one-film-old at the time and had only been in a couple of stage shows. According to an old interview with Fisher from 1977, Lucas chose her because she fulfilled one particular quality of the character that he had written.

Actress Carrie Fisher carved a special place in the hearts of millions of cinemagoers with her iconic role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. George Lucas has a very pointed message for “Star Wars” haters who mocked the franchise prequels and cancelled Jar Jar Binks: the movies aren’t for you.
“It was supposed to be a kid’s movie for 12-year-olds that were going through puberty, who don’t know what they’re doing, and are asking all the big questions: What should I be worried about? What’s important in life?,” Lucas said at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, where he received an honorary Palme d’Or.
“And ‘Star Wars’ has all those things in there. They’re buried in there but you definitely get it, especially if you’re young,” he continued.
Of the ire that the character of Jar Jar Binks drew when he was introduced in “The Phantom Menace,” Lucas explained, “Everybody said the same thing about 3-po, that he was irritating and we should get rid of him.

Developed in the early ‘70s by George Lucas, Star Wars, as a franchise, has grown to juggernaut heights both in net worth and creative output. Ever since the release of the first film, it has continued to capture the imaginations of countless people across the globe and become more or less synonymous with everyday pop culture. Regardless of its juggernaut impact, it too, has not managed to get away from flaws and misses and landed criticisms, especially for its prequel trilogy.

It all started in 2019 when Lionsgate released Knives Out. At the time, director Rian Johnson was not beloved by many because of his polarizing work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so the movie was sort of an attempt at redemption for the filmmaker. Starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, the film was a whodunnit that featured an ensemble cast, and it was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as Knives Out became one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre.
A sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, soon followed, and while that movie was also well-received, it was not a genre masterpiece like the first one. The case was feeble at best, at moments even ridiculous,...

Benoit Blanc is back to solve another mystery in Rian Johnson’s third “Knives Out” film, titled “Wake Up Dead Man.”
Johnson announced the title, along with a 2025 release date, in a teaser posted to X Friday morning.
“In the beginning, the knives came out. Then, behold, the glass was shattered. But my most dangerous case yet is about to be revealed,” narrates Daniel Craig in the 45-second video, referencing the first two titles of the murder mystery franchise, 2019’s “Knives Out” and 2022’s “Glass Onion.”
“Wake Up Dead Man” will be distributed by Netflix as part of Johnson’s two-sequel deal with the streamer, worth $450 million. Despite the first film, distributed by Lionsgate, grossing $312 million at the global box office, Netflix put out “Glass Onion” with only a limited theatrical release, collecting a mere $13 million before launching it on streaming.
