The Asunta Case is a brand-new Netflix original miniseries that chronicles the murder of Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto in 2013 and the subsequent trial that followed for her parents, who were accused of killing their own adoptive daughter. This is yet another addition to Netflix’s true crime gallery that proves they know what they are doing when it comes to the genre. Just a few weeks ago, Netflix covered the hijacking that happened in the 1970s in Colombia through The Hijacking of Flight 601. There is no dearth of true crime stories that this streaming giant has covered. The Asunta Case was released on April 26, 2024, and it was created by Ramón Campos, Jon de la Cuesta, Gema R. Neira, and David Orea.

When two hijackers out for ransom and political concessions take over a flight with 43 passengers, the co-pilots and scant crew attempt to outwit their attackers and maintain calm at cruising altitude above Latin America for more than 24 hours. Can the pillbox hat-wearing, cape-draped, terribly nervous flight attendants save the day — and the lives of all their passengers?
Directed by C.S. Prince and Pablo González (The Great Heist), the character-driven, retro-infused series The Hijacking of Flight 601 (Secuestro del Vuelo 601) was inspired by one of the longest aerial hijackings in Latin American history, which took place in May of 1973. It stars Mónica Lopera, Christian Tappan, and Enrique Carriazo.

Award-winning Colombian director-producer Simon Brand and Miami-based media executive producer Daniel Eilemberg have joined forces with the founders of Emmy-winning Imaginer Films, Julio César and Laura Franco, to launch Clover Studios, a new production services company in Colombia.
The new enterprise is in response to Colombia’s phenomenal growth as a major production center, driven by its competitive production incentives and flourishing creative community.
Led by Netflix’s ambitious series adaptation of Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s literary masterpiece “100 Years of Solitude,” which has entailed a full-scale recreation of the mythical village of Macondo and 20,000 extras, a number of high-profile projects have been lured to the country.
Just last year, upcoming sequel “Paddington in Peru” was mostly shot in Colombia instead of the country in its title. This month Netflix announced its first multi-year creative partnership with Colombian talent, the writer-director team Camilo Prince and Pablo González, whose thriller “The Hijacking of Flight 601,...

Spanish shows that come from the Latin American region tend to be overly dramatic. Romantic shows are often unbelievable and too cheesy, while crime thrillers will be filled with unnecessary twists and turns and too many convolutions in the end. Fortunately, The Hijacking of Flight 601 is subtle and emotional, and all the excesses mentioned above were reigned in. This six-episode miniseries chronicles the ordeal the crew and the passengers of Flight 601 faced when the flight was brought under the control of two hijackers. Based on a true story, there is a lot that unfolds as the series progresses.

There are very few television shows or movies out there that capture the horrors of hijackings, which were very common from the 1960s to the 1980s across the world. As stated in this Netflix Original as well, there were over 380 hijackings that happened all around the world, and most of them happened in Latin America ever since the rise of communism, with Che Guevara and Fidel Castro becoming the faces of it. It is appalling to learn such stories never made it to the screen, but decades later, The Hijacking of Flight 601, a Colombian Netflix original, brings a story inspired by a real-life event that took place in the year 1973. Created by C.S. Prince and Pablo Gonzalez, the six-part miniseries, was released on April 10, 2024.
The Hijacking of Flight 601 is a detailed retelling of an incident that occurred in South America in the same year as mentioned in the series.

Back in the 1970s, there was a hijacking of Flight 601 (originally named the Hk-1274 aircraft) from Bogota Airport, Columbia, by two terrorists. It was quite common in Latin America at that time, often to protest oppression, especially in places like communist Cuba. This time, there were 43 passengers, 2 pilots, and 3 air hostesses on board. But one person stood up to try and save lives, risking his own life and career—the director of Aerobolivar Airlines, Alvaro Aristides Pirateque. Now, even though Netflix’s The Hijacking Of Flight 601 insinuates that the character of Pirateque is based on a real-life person, there is little to no evidence to say the same with certainty. Aerobolivar Airlines is a fictional aviation company. In real life, it was a Sam Colombia airplane that got hijacked on May 30, 1973. There is hardly any information about the presiding director of the company at that time, and even Massimo Di Ricco’s reports,...

Netflix’s The Hijacking of Flight 601 series is based on the true story of a plane hijacking that took place in the early 1970s in Colombia. In the series, we came across a character, Barbara, whose real name was Maria Eugenia Gallo. As per the media reports, Maria was just 23 years old when the hijacking of a real-life Hk-1274 aircraft took place in Medellin. The unmarried flight attendant, Maria, used to work for Colombian Sam Airlines, which shut down its business in 2010. Nevertheless, The Hijacking of Flight 601 takes a few creative liberties in portraying Maria’s character in the series. To begin with, there is no evidence to suggest Maria ever changed her real name and worked under the guise of Barbara for any political reasons. However, it is true that Maria was a close friend to another real-life air stewardess presented in the series, i.e., Edilma Perez.

In an unprecedented move, Netflix has struck a multi-year creative partnership with Colombian writer/director team Camilo Prince and Pablo González, best known for their lauded 2020 thriller drama series “The Great Heist” and their 2019 anthology series, “Crime Diaries: Night Out,” both for Netflix.
This is the first creative pact Netflix has made with Colombian talent. Similar partnerships have been made with Venezuela’s Roberto Stopello and Leonardo Padrón as well as Mexico’s Manolo Caro, Carolina Rivera and Chilean writer José Ignacio “Chascas” Valenzuela, creator, showrunner of the hit Netflix series “Who Killed Sara?”
The new alliance coincides with the April 10 Netflix debut of the duo’s latest series, “The Hijacking of Flight 601” (“Secuestrar al Vuelo”), inspired by the longest skyjacking in Latin American history, which happened on May 30, 1973.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

Parasyte: The Grey follows an outbreak of an unknown alien parasite that can pass as their human hosts and infiltrate society – think Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but with more gore.

"Revolution or death!" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a "true crime" series from Colombia titled The Hijacking of Flight 601, based on the true story of a similar flight. Directed by C.S. Prince & Pablo González (The Great Heist), the series is inspired by the longest aerial hijacking in Latin American history, which occurred on May 30th, 1973. Sam Colombia flight Hk-1274 with 84 passengers was hijacked between Pereira and Medellin. The hijackers were two former Paraguayan football players who disguised themselves as guerrillas in order to get the ransom and had no political affiliation. The hijack lasted for more than 60 hours and was one of the lengthiest airline hijackings at the time and the longest in distance traveled. Starring Mónica Lopera, Christian Tappan, Enrique Carriazo, Ángela Cano, Marcela Benjumea - among other national & international talent - Hijacking of Flight 601 seeks to keep its audience at the edge of their seats...
