There might not be crying in baseball, but there is room to change it. Prime Video's A League of Their Own, premiering Aug. 12, takes the classic 1992 A League of Their Own movie, starring Geena Davis, Madonna, Tom Hanks and Rosie O'Donnell, and flips it on its head. Starring and co-created by Broad City's Abbi Jacobson, the series modernizes and diversifies the tale of the Rockford Peaches—which felt like a necessity, even for diehard fans of the original. "I loved the film and I feel like it told some of the stories of some women in that generation who dreamed of playing baseball," Jacobson exclusively told E! News. "Our show is attempting to tell a lot more of...

Life is so much more than a box of chocolates to Tom Hanks. On Nov. 10, the Oscar winner sat down with The Bill Simmons Podcast to talk about the favorite films he has worked on during his 40-year career in Hollywood. With nearly 100 films on his résumé and two Oscars, he has a lot to cherry-pick from, but the big ones that stand out have special 'personal' meaning. Tom told host Bill Simmons that working on 1992's A League of Their Own was like being a kid again. "All I did all summer was play baseball," he said. "I shagged flies. I ate turkey dogs. I took infield with Robin Knight and a ton of other people. I played baseball all summer long in Evansville,...

Hansal Mehta is, however, reluctant to slot films and series based on the subject as a specific genre. Talking to Ians, he says: "Don't put stories into boxes. All you have to do is tell a good story, whether it is about a scam or love. A story well told, well acted-out and directed in an all-round manner is what counts. A story done in the right way resonates with the audience. It doesn't have to be about a scam or a biopic."

According to a new report this week by the Pew Research Center, Americans have finally come to an agreement about how to solve the climate crisis: by planting trees. A trillion of them. In theory, those trees will suck so much carbon out of the air that we won’t have to worry about installing solar panels or ditching the SUV for an electric car. According to the Pew report, the trillion trees solution is supported by 90 percent of both Democrats and Republicans. Contrast this, for example, with support for...

When the Academy announces its shortlist for song nominations on Dec. 16, you can be certain that at least one Disney song will be on it and probably more.
Disney songs have been nominated 33 times in the past 30 years, winning 12 of the gold statuettes.
This year, the studio has at least four in the running: two from live-action remakes of animated classics and two from highly anticipated sequels. Three are already among the top-10 grossing films of the year, and the fourth, just released, is expected to join that elite crowd in a matter of weeks.
“Speechless,” from this year’s “Aladdin” remake, was written by original composer Alan Menken (who won a 1992 Oscar for that film’s “A Whole New World”) with new lyricist partners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Oscar winners for a song from “La La Land” three years ago). It’s sung by Naomi Scott as...

Released in 1990, The Rescuers Down Under is one of the great forgotten films of the Disney Renaissance.
In conversations about Disney Animation’s spell-binding run of films from The Little Mermaid to The Lion King and beyond, there’s rarely enough lip-service given to the overlooked milestone that came out in 1990.
Sandwiched between the transformational The Little Mermaid, the studio’s biggest box office success in decades, and Beauty and the Beast, which became the first ever animated Best Picture nominee at the 1992 Oscars and is still considered by many to be Disney's best, The Rescuers Down Under is somewhat lost in the mix.
Nevertheless, it was a groundbreaking film for the studio’s steadily regrouping feature animation department and marked a number of notable firsts for them and the medium in general. The circumstances of its production and its release would make it the...
