It’s the next step in the separation of the Starz cable channel/streaming service from the Lionsgate production house.
The effort by Lionsgate to spin off its TV and movie production studio from the cable channel/streaming service Starz has taken its next step. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission to spin off its TV and movie studios in a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (Spac), allowing it to continue the process of disentangling itself from Starz and potentially attract new buyers.
The Lionsgate TV and movie studios will merge with Screaming Eagle Acquisition Corp., with the deal likely to close in May. Lionsgate intends to be fully split from Starz by the end of 2024. The change could mean the end of the Starz streaming platform, which may see the rights to its TV and movie library depart with Lionsgate. Save 70% $9.99+ / month starz.

When a movie franchise drops the number of a sequel directly into its title, you know things are about to get serious. That’s why fans are so excited for “Expend4bles,” the newest installment in the explosive “Expendables” franchise that officially heads to theaters on Friday, Sept. 22, though preview screenings started earlier this week.

This time, the group has to prevent all-out nuclear war from devastating the globe, and they’ll have to do it with some new faces in key positions. The Expendables have never fallen down on the job before, but when the stakes are highest they’ll have to turn it up to 11 to save the world yet again.

There may finally be some clarity on what Lionsgate plans to do with Starz. Or at least, there’s now clarity on when audiences who have been following the twisting saga might actually get some clarity on what the company plans to do with itself.
Reports that Lionsgate was looking to spin the streamer Starz and its cable sibling Starz off into their own separate company first surfaced in May of 2022. Its first target goal was to complete the maneuver by the end of summer 2022, but that goal was then pushed to fall. When fall came, reports circulated that Lionsgate was considering spinning off its movie studio instead, and preparing to keep Starz in-house.

The existence of the 21st century itself is almost inconceivable. Ask any one who was around in 1999 how they felt about the incoming year 2000 and they’ll be happy to tell you how surreal it all felt. Hell, they may even be nice enough to give you a non-perishable treat from their Y2K bomb shelter.
The fact that we’re even in the 2000s and have been for many years feels like science fiction to begin with. It’s only fitting then that television, a very 20th century innovation, has been at our side the whole time to make sense of it.

Everywhere you look these days, it seems a streamer is losing subscribers. Disney+ and ESPN+ both posted customer losses this week for their most recent fiscal quarters, and last week it was Warner Bros. Discovery announcing that its streamers Max and discovery+ had shed users.

But if Nolan's three-hour epic leaves you wanting more, here's a cool (and free) opportunity to learn some more about that period of history. “What’s the worst that could happen?” has become cliche famous last words for a reason. That’s a lesson that four friends are about to learn in “Joy Ride,” the newest release from Lionsgate that hits movie theaters on Friday, July 7.
The movie centers on four Asian-American friends — played by Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu — as they travel through Asia in search of one of their gang’s birth mothers. Along the way, their experience becomes one of bonding, friendship, belonging, and no-holds-barred debauchery. It’s just a road trip, what could possibly go wrong??
The film is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, gathering a 92% rating. Critics point out there’s plenty of base humor in the film, but it’s balanced with a surprisingly earnest emotional story that will leave viewers cry-laughing all the way home.

Jake Johnson is getting behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with Self Reliance. This film finds the main character playing a dangerous game for a lofty sum of cash, but at what price? Hulu acquired the U.S. rights to Self Reliance after a competitive bid with MRC and Paramount Global Content. In addition to directing the feature, Johnson also stars alongside Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Andy Samberg, GaTa (Dave), Emily Hampshire, Mary Holland, Boban Marjanović, Christopher Lloyd and Wayne Brady.
Self Reliance revolves around Tommy, a man who is offered a million dollars to participate in a game in which hunters try to kill him. The catch? They can only attack him when he’s alone. Thinking he’s found a loophole, the man attempts to bring his friends and family into the deal. However, problems arise when no one in his party thinks the game is real.

A film or TV series is often most effective and potent as an artform when it makes us feel, so what are the best ways that good scores elicit an emotional response in the audience? Which film or TV scores and composers are you most fond of and why? Lionsgate dropped its earnings report for its most recent quarter. It held some fascinating insights, but none more surprising than the fact that its domestic streaming platform Starz added 700,000 users.
Internationally, where Starz operates as Lionsgate+ in most territories, the company added 600,000 more over-the-top (Ott) users, for a total of 1.3 million new streaming customers in the quarter. That’s certainly a nice bounce back for Starz, which lost 600,000 global users between Starz, Lionsgate+ and Starzplay Arabia.
Save 44% (Just $5/mo) $8.99 / month starz.com
The new additions mean Starz and its global streaming siblings now sit at approximately 28.3 million streaming customers around the world. That represents a year-over-year increase of over 13%. New releases during the quarter, such as the third season of “Power Book II: Ghost” helped the service achieve such strong numbers from its streaming segment.
No doubt there were other factors involved in Starz’s relatively impressive quarter, as well.

Nine years ago, Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks) and Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones) both had roles in the Norwegian horror comedy Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead. Now Starr and Acharia lead the cast of another Norwegian production, the holiday horror movie There’s Something in the Barn – and our friends at Bloody Disgusting have just unveiled the first image from the movie! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

The story follows a typical American family who inherits a farm in the Norwegian mountains and crosses paths with a tricky creature from Nordic folklore, the Barn Elf. When J.K. Rowling's popular "Harry Potter" series of books enchanted children and adults the world over, a Hollywood bidding war erupted. Every studio in town wanted the rights to the publishing phenomenon. Warner Bros. ultimately won out, at which point the hard work of finding the right filmmaker to launch the cash-cow franchise began.
Steven Spielberg was the obvious choice, but he envisioned the adaptations as an animated series. This was too limiting for WB, which turned the project into the most coveted open assignment in the industry. Many of the most desired directors were too auteurist for the assignment. Peter Weir, Alan Parker and M. Night Shyamalan had a distinctive style that might've overwhelmed or outright clashed with the mainstream-skewing material.
These films needed a steady hand, someone who could deliver a homogenized, four-quadrant take on the family-friendly books. They needed, and got, Chris Columbus. But if Rowling had her way,...

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
As Picard season 3 heads toward its conclusion, Star Trek fans are simply not prepared for how hard these episodes go in the nostalgia department. More than any other science fiction franchise, Star Trek’s history is so rich and varied, that it’s always possible to do something new with old material. For this reason, Picard’s penultimate episode, “Vox,” is still pretty shocking, even if you predicted some of these twists.
The easter eggs and callbacks here are there for the fan service, of course. But these are also storytelling moments, payoffs that are decades in the making. Here are all the biggest and most and best references and easter eggs in “Vox,” the next-to-last episode of Picard ever.
The Crimson Arboretum on Raritan IV
As Jack and Deanna try to get that red door opened, Jack remembers visiting the “crimson arboretum” on Raritan IV.

It's a dystopian tale as old as time: in the post-apocalyptic future, Earth's populace is controlled by an authoritarian leadership that imposes a series of rigid rules that purport to protect them from an inhospitable, perhaps uninhabitable outside world. We've seen many iterations of this, from the hedonistic society of "Logan's Run" to the ramshackle hell of "12 Monkeys." It's an evergreen concept, one that responds to the fears of humans as we barrel forward with blithe disregard to our seemingly inevitable doom.
Hugh Howey's "Silo" series of novels is a fairly familiar take on this premise. In his first installment, which became a self-publishing phenomenon via Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing imprint in 2012, we're introduced to a society that exists 144 stories beneath the Earth's surface. While its denizens are being housed for their own protection from the toxic world above, every now and then some curious individual asks to go topside.

Captain Liam Shaw, played by Todd Stashwick on the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," has rapidly become a favorite of Trekkies everywhere. Unlike the aloof-yet-diplomatic Captain Picard, the no-nonsense Captain Sisko, or the family-friendly authoritarian Captain Janeway, Shaw is brusque, unfriendly, and even a bit of a jerk, more willing to adhere to protocol than listen to his crew. He's the kind of boss you hope you never have to work under. He's also not necessarily an incompetent starship captain and will follow whatever course of action that keeps his crew safe. Naturally, Trekkies have been quick to suggest that Captain Shaw and his crew be given their own spin-off TV series. Whether or not "Star Trek: Titan" ever appears remains to be seen, but the current season of "Picard" has not yet concluded, so many viewers are holding their breath, hoping that Shaw and his crew survive to the end.

Did you go see the new “John Wick: Chapter 4” last weekend? By any measure, it had a spectacular debut weekend in theaters, pulling in $138 million for Lionsgate, the studio behind the series. Star Trek hasn’t always been great about introducing new characters in legacy stories. Sure, Lieutenant Saavik was pretty great, at least in her first incarnation, but no one wanted to see more of David or William Dekker (bullet dodged on that last one). But like an odd-numbered Trek movie that everyone loves, Star Trek: Picard‘s Captain Liam Shaw has broken the mold. The cantankerous Captain of the USS Titan has whistled his way into our hearts, with his jazz-hating, protocol-loving, Picard-down-putting ways.
So even as members of the Picard creative team play will they/won’t they with the possibility of continuing the show beyond its planned third and final season, fans have been calling for a USS Titan series featuring Shaw at the helm. Star Trek: Picard Season 3 feels like a miracle. The first two seasons of Paramount’s much-hyped Jean-Luc Picard solo show were arguably hogwash, with some promising moments early on that quickly deteriorated into big fat nothingburgers. But with Season 3 comes the reunion of the old Next Generation crew, and some of the old Trek magic is finally back on screen. It’s ironic, then, that the best thing about Season 3 is a brand-new character in the mix: USS Titan-a Captain Liam Shaw, as played by 12 Monkeys star Todd Stashwick.
We first meet Shaw in episode one, “The Next Generation“, when William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) optimistically arrive aboard the USS Titan-a, intending to convince its captain to divert course so they can investigate an emergency message sent to Picard from his old flame, Doctor Beverly Crusher. One of the best things about the Academy Awards is that, unlike the Golden Globes with its two sets of lead actor and actress lineups, is that genres don’t matter when it comes to the four acting categories. Therefore, it is a more meaningful honor. But it also makes getting recognition for worthy work can be more difficult.

As “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” continues to rake it in at the box office ($100 million and counting), it’s also generating some pretty serious awards conversation – and questions. There’s one in particular that keeps popping up.
Is Brad Pitt leading or supporting? “No decision has been made,” a campaign insider tells Gold Derby. “There’s still a lot of time to see how these races play out.”
Like many, I would argue that he’s a co-lead. He’s clearly part of the central action of the film, and has comparable screen time to the top-billed Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Pitt’s frequent onscreen absences would make a supporting campaign less of an outright category crime (see Mahershala Ali in “Green Book” and Alicia Vikander in “The Danish Girl”) and more of an everyday award infraction (think Viola Davis in “Fences” and Patricia Arquette in “Boyhood.”)
In fact,...

“Schitt’s Creek” star Emily Hampshire has signed on for the lead role of independent psychological horror movie “Home.”
Hampshire is also executive producing for the first time on “Home.” Production begins on Aug. 13 in Montreal.
Hampshire just wrapped the sixth and final season of CBC Television “Schitt’s Creek,” playing motel clerk and owner Stevie Budd, and also recently starred as Jennifer Goines in Syfy’s series “12 Monkeys.”
Adam O’Brien of Delirium Pictures is directing “Home” from a script by Philip Kalin-Hajdu, who is also producing with Benoit Beaulieu. The story is set after the death of a couple’s newborn son, which leads to the couple separating. Alone in her house, she is convinced that her son is still alive, unaware that the death of her baby has caused the birth of something terribly sinister.

To both lead or to have only one lead, that is the big Oscar question for one pair of male co-stars, still firmly perched at the top of their games, as Gold Derby launches its Academy Award prediction site today. The ultimate answer is below — but first some background.
Once upon a time in Hollywood, male co-leads in a film were allowed to go mano-to-mano and duke it out in the same Oscar category. The first instance of this situation was when cast mates Clark Gable, Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone went up against each other in 1935’s “Mutiny on the Bounty.” In that case, there was no other choice since supporting acting categories weren’t added to the ballot until 1937. Alas, all three stars were bested by Victor McLaglen in “The Informer.”

Quibi has set its latest two projects in development — a modern take on Paramount’s 2003 romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, from Paramount Television, and a vampire drama from writer Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) and executive produced by David Katzenberg, from 20th Century Fox TV.
Written by Guy Branum (The Mindy Project), the reimagined How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days follows a glib young online columnist and an oversexed advertising executive who both need to prove, once and for all, that they’re capable of being monogamous. They soon discover, however, keeping a relationship is harder than Andie Anderson made it look.
The 2003 film directed by Donald Petrie, starred Kate Hudson as Anderson and Matthew McConaughey.
Further details on the series are yet to be announced.
Branum, creator and host of truTV’s Talk Show the Game Show, was a supervising producer for Comedy Central’s The Other Two.

With red-hot pairings like Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, this year’s awards season could again face a classic Hollywood dilemma: Which high-profile actors are the leads and which are supporting?
Last year, Olivia Colman upset Glenn Close to win the Oscar for best actress, but truth be told, Colman wasn’t the sole lead of “The Favourite.” The film was a three-hander with Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz as Colman’s big screen equals. However, Fox Searchlight wasn’t going to risk splitting the vote, so the studio campaigned Stone and Weisz — who had each already won Oscars — as supporting roles.
The same strategy worked for Mahershala Ali, who won his second supporting actor Oscar for “Green Book” after it was decided that his co-star Viggo Mortenson would compete for lead.
This year, a similar scenario is playing out with DiCaprio and Pitt in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Paradigm has signed Schitt's Creek's Emily Hampshire, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
As motel manager-turned-owner Stevie Budd, the Montreal native has won four straight Canadian Screen Awards for best supporting or guest actress in the Pop and CBC cult comedy, which will air its sixth and final season in 2020.
Up until last year, Hampshire was pulling double duty as a series regular on Syfy's 12 Monkeys as well, playing a very different character, the asylum inmate Jennifer Goines, based on Brad Pitt's character in the film of the same name. Schitt's Creek and 12 Monkeys premiered within ...

Terry Gilliam’s near-mythical movie finally arrives on the screen. Was it worth the wait?
We’ve all experienced that sensation of something sounding or looking good in our heads -- a note we wanted to write to someone, a story we wanted to pen, perhaps even a film we wanted to make -- and then the disappointment of it actually coming to existence on the page or screen and the thing not being exactly how we envisioned it in the seclusion of our minds.
In a strange way, Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote -- a film that the maverick director of Brazil and 12 Monkeys has been attempting to make for three decades -- engenders the same sensation in the viewer. After all these years, and with the movie’s almost legendary status as the one that kept getting away, one can’t help but wonder if all the time,...
