His other films include the Edgar Allan Poe detective thriller “The Raven,” starring John Cusack, Luke Evans and Brendan Gleeson, as well as “Survivor,” starring Milla Jovovich and Pierce Brosnan.

The company, which owns Facebook, Instagram and more, had issued guidance of $34.5 billion to $37 billion for the first quarter. Meta reported income of $12.4 billion, up 117 percent from the year-earlier period.
“It’s been a good start to the year,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Meta founder and CEO. “The new version of Meta AI with Llama 3 is another step towards building the world’s leading AI. We’re seeing healthy growth across our apps and we continue making steady progress building the metaverse as well.”
On the earnings call, Zuckerberg said the rollout last week of the new Meta AI, an assistant that can be used within search to answer complex queries, make recommendations and create animations from still images and more, is going well, with tens of million of people trying it and giving positive feedback.

Minutes into the medieval intro of “The Faceless Lady,” a fair maiden rips off her face. You immediately feel a bit nauseated. But did the violence trigger that reaction — or is it the fact that the action seems to be happening somewhere deep in your visual cortex?
“The Faceless Lady,” a collaboration between Meta and producer Eli Roth, is billed as “the first known scripted original VR live action, stereoscopic (3D) series ever produced of its size.” Although it’s designed for the Meta’s Quest headset, the story and scope seem wide enough to exist out of the headset. It’s a complete package that could bring fresh eyes to next-gen storytelling.
The six-episode undertaking, written by Jerome Velinsky and directed by John William Ross, is an escape room spin on ghostly lore. Three twentysomething couples head to the mysterious Kilolc Castle in Ireland to play deadly games for...

Of the 16-page summary detailing the tentative deal between SAG-AFTRA and the studios, more than five are spent on provisions over artificial intelligence. It’s the product of months of hard-nosed bargaining by the union on an issue that the studios seemingly didn’t think would emerge as a sticking point walking into negotiations.
The document cites the establishment of a “broad, protective” definition of generative artificial intelligence, along with requirements surrounding notice, consent and compensation around digital replicas of actors and “synthetic performers” created by AI tools. It’s flanked by a first-of-its-kind acknowledgment of “the importance of human performance in motion pictures and the potential impact on employment.”
But SAG-AFTRA members may still have plenty to worry about on AI restrictions — especially on the issue of the creation and deployment of digital replicas in performances that could allow studios to circumvent what were intended to be enhanced protections for actors.

While artificial intelligence has been one of the biggest points of contention in the WGA and the SAG-AFTRA strikes, back in France, Newen Studios has taken a deep dive into AI to deliver daily soaps, as well as source talent and pitch projects in their own metaverse space.
During Mipcom, Newen’s head of innovation, Marianne Carpentier, launched the second edition of the banner’s Meta Pitch Contest. Jada Pinkett Smith says the notorious Oscar slap carried an additional shock – when husband Will Smith called her “wife.”
When Will Smith charged the stage and slapped host Chris Rock at the 94th Oscars, it was in response to a joke at Jada Pinkett Smith’s expense, with the words: “Keep my wife’s name out your f–king mouth!”
Smith now says she was “shocked” by the altercation. “We haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time,” Smith said in an interview with “Today.”
On Wednesday, Smith revealed that she and Will Smith have been separated since 2016 but don’t plan on divorcing.

Destanee Aiavaa, a 23-year-old Itf-level player from Melbourne, Australia, recently painted a grim picture of life on the lower rungs of professional tennis .
Aiava, once a promising upstart of Australian tennis, has struggled with motivation and mental health issues in the past and made headlines last year after a shocking revelation that she almost took her own life.
Aiava is ranked outside the world's Top 200 on the Wta Tour, and currently plies her trade on the Itf Tour, chipping away at her ranking and painstakingly earning a buck at the lowest level of women's tennis. She's done that for pretty much her entire career, outside a handful of wild card appearances at her home tournaments during the Australian summer series.
The 23-year-old has played 49 matches so far this season and won 31 of them. But she took to Meta's Threads to pontificate about the financial difficulties she's been through.

San Francisco, Aug 29 (Ians) Twitter’s renaming as X by Elon Musk saw its weekly active users drop 4 per cent over the following weeks after the exercise.
The X app fell four spots in the Overall category rankings to No 36 earlier this month as its installs decreased by 8 per cent, according to data from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower. That included a decline across both iOS and Android, down 22 per cent and 18 per cent, respectively.
Average user time spent and sessions on X fell 5 per cent after the rebranding.
“Twitter rebranded to X earlier this week and saw mixed reactions from its users with some notably voicing dissatisfaction with the abandonment of the classic blue bird logo,” said the report.
However, installs for the Twitter Lite app, designed for emerging markets, went up after the name change, reports TechCrunch, citing the data.
Twitter Lite downloads increased, up 50 per cent from the previous time frame.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie grossed a record-breaking $155 million domestically — and $377 million internationally — in its first weekend. The blockbuster film also crushed right-wing efforts to boycott the film for its “man-hating” and “woke feminism,” and Barbie has since driven her pink Corvette over the delicate egos of outraged conservatives to score the biggest film debut of 2023.
While Gerwig didn’t anticipate the right-wing backlash, she continues to maintain that Barbie is for all. “Certainly, there’s a lot of passion,” the director told The New York Times when asked about conservatives...

New Delhi, July 17 (Ians) As Meta’s Threads crosses 150 million sign-ups, the so-called Twitter killer’s daily use has gone down miserably, with time spent by users now down by 50 per cent from 20 minutes to just 10 minutes.
According to Sensor Tower data, Threads platform’s number of daily active users were down about 20 per cent since its debut on July 5.
Data from Similarweb showed a drop of more than 25 per cent in daily active users on Android phones globally. The usage time also decreased by more than 50 per cent, it showed.
However, these are early days and as Meta introduces more Twitter-like features, the daily use may go up and Threads can achieve the momentum it aspires for.

Long before Hollywood faced a historic double strike, Amazon made a plan to turn one of its hit Prime Video dramas into the appointment TV event of the summer. Now that showrunner Jenny Han and the cast are prohibited from promoting the series, marketing experts believe the tech giant could still manage to persuade viewers to kick the binging habit with the help of social media influencers.
The first season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” which was released all at once in keeping with the popular binge-model, was a viral success. But rather than bet on a repeat, the company opted to release Season 2 weekly: The show premiered the new season’s first three episodes Friday and is set to release episodes weekly through the season finale on Aug. 18.

San Francisco, July 13 (Ians) Meta has announced that the gaming platform Roblox is coming to Quest 2 and Pro, starting with an open beta hitting App Lab in the coming weeks.
“On average, more than 66 million users log into Roblox every day, with a community that spans mobile devices (both iOS and Android), desktops, and Xbox, and we can’t wait to add Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, and (coming soon) Quest 3 to the mix,” Meta said in a blogpost on Wednesday.
The open beta is a good opportunity for the Roblox developer community to optimise their existing games for Quest and build new ones for virtual reality (VR) while gathering input and feedback from the Quest community.
“That means developers will be able to experiment, learn, and iterate on VR experiences before Roblox is ready for prime time and its full release on the Meta Quest Store.”

San Francisco, July 11 (Ians) Users of Meta’s Twitter rival Threads discovered that Elon Musk has begun limiting search results when they try to find links to Threads on the microblogging platform, despite the platform currently being filled with links to Threads content.
A user on Threads posted, “Twitter is selectively blocking searches for tweets that link to Threads, even though they allow posting Threads URLs (for now).”
However, the behaviour is also being widely reported by Twitter users, reports The Verge. The issue was discovered while searching for links to a specific URL with the “url:” search operator.
Searching “url:threads.net” on Twitter returns zero results, despite there being a lot of tweets linking to the domain.
Similarly, searching for “threads.net” without the “url:” operator returns dozens of irrelevant results from users with their Threads account in their display name, or who discuss Threads without linking to it,...

Sarah Silverman and two other authors filed class-action lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta, claiming that the companies’ artificial intelligence software programs pilfer from their copyrighted works.
The lawsuit reflects a growing debate over when emerging artificial intelligence technology crosses the line into infringing on copyrighted works, a question that came up in a recent congressional hearing featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
In the lawsuit, Silverman and two other authors, Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, claim that OpenAI’s ChatGPT relies on their works for its training dataset.
The authors, who are seeking class-action status, say they did not consent to their works being used in this way, but they were “ingested and used to train ChatGPT.”
“Indeed, when ChatGPT is prompted, ChatGPT generates summaries of Plaintiffs’ copyrighted works –something only possible if ChatGPT was trained on Plaintiffs’ copyrighted works,” the lawsuit states.

It’s official: Instagram is unveiling its Threads app.
Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch Wednesday evening, framing Threads as “a new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations.”
In other words, it’s gunning for Twitter, which has been undergoing a series of strategic shifts ever since Elon Musk acquired the platform last year.
While Threads is built around text updates, it will not be limited to words. It will also support photos and videos up to five minutes long, per Instagram.
As expected, Threads will be connected to users’ Instagram accounts, allowing for easy connections to followers, public figures or brands. The text posts will be limited to 500 characters. (Twitter, by contrast, has a 280 character limit, though it rises to 10,000 for Twitter Blue subscribers.)

New Delhi, July 4 (Ians) The abrupt changes at Twitter under Elon Musk, that has left millions of users annoyed, has resulted in a surge in several competitor apps to the so-called ‘public digital square’ and leading the pack in Meta’s Threads that is set to be launched this week.
As Twitter writes its own nemesis as it finally heads towards a fully paid service, Musk rivals have sensed the deep grudge among Twitter users.
Before Twitter owner Musk and Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg enter a full-on cage fight (both are apparently preparing for the Jiu Jitsu showdown), Instagram Threads is expected to launch on Thursday, according to an App Store listing for the application.
“Say more with Threads — Instagram’s text-based conversation app. Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow,” according to Meta.

Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has once again thrust himself in the spotlight by reiterating his accusation against the CIA.
Last month, he said in an interview with John Catsimatidis that “the CIA was involved in the murder” of his uncle, the late President John F. Kennedy.
In a new interview with Joe Rogan, Rogan asked the environmental lawyer what he thinks will happen when he gets into office concerning his controversial claims against the CIA.
Without missing a beat, Kennedy said that he must be “careful” and is “aware of that danger.”
“I don’t live in fear of it at all,” he continued. “I’m not stupid about it. I take precautions.”
In addition to his uncle, his father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was also assassinated.
In 2021, Kennedy was banned from Instagram due to his constant posting of “debunked claims about the coronavirus or vaccines.” Last year,...

The 1963 TV series "The Fugitive" was a massive success in its initial four-season run, and became something of a pop cultural touchstone. The premise was a grabber: Dr. Richard Kimble (David Janssen) has been arrested and convicted for the murder of his wife, a crime he didn't commit. Dr. Kimble slips the authorities and goes on the lam, eager to track down the real killer and prove his innocence. All he knew was that the killer had one arm. On Dr. Kimble's tail -- the Javert to his Valjean -- was Lieutenant Philip Gerard (Barry Morse), who didn't much care if Kimble was guilty or innocent; he merely sought to apprehend him and let the law work itself out.
30 years later, "The Fugitive" would be adapted into a massively successful and acclaimed feature film starring Harrison Ford as Kimble and Tommy Lee Jones as the re-named Sam Gerard, a U.

It would appear that the King of Modern Trash Cinema™ is on his way to becoming the King of Modern Trash Shared Universes: Deadline is reporting that Gerard Butler's "Has Fallen" franchise is headed to the small screen, even as a fourth movie centered on Butler's Secret Service Agent Mike Banning continues to move forward.
The Scottish thespian and "300" actor -- whose many, many B-movie credits include "Law Abiding Citizen," "Den of Thieves," and this year's marvelously-titled "Plane" -- made his debut as Banning in Antoine Fuqua's "Olympus Has Fallen." Fuqua's modestly-successful action flick pitted Banning, a U.S. government agent haunted by a past failure on the job, against a North Korean-backed attack on the White House, making it one of two "Die Hard" riffs set in the Oval Office that released in 2013 (with the other being Roland Emmerich's arguably superior "White House Down...

Type in any celebrity’s name on Instagram or Twitter and you’re bound to find at least a handful of accounts — if not more — posing as the celebrity, using the same profile picture and sharing photos and videos taken from their real accounts.
Some of them are innocuous fan accounts dedicated to sharing the latest updates on their favorite stars with other stans. But others — the true impostors — can cause much more harm, DMing unsuspecting fans to scam users out of money, solicit nude photos or otherwise exploit a celebrity’s star status.
Though social media platforms now have sophisticated AI-powered technology that can help weed out possible fraudsters among their millions of users, public figures still must contend with the potential for their likeness to be ripped off for someone else’s gain. In fact, Twitter’s verification program launched in 2009 after St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa...

Meta Won Approval to Buy a Virtual Reality App, But FTC Laid Groundwork to Halt Big Tech’s Next Deal
The Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit to block Facebook parent company Meta’s acquisition of virtual reality app developer Within presented the court with a legal question that used to exist on the periphery of antitrust law and is now critical to the government’s efforts to rein in big tech: How to assess proposed deals by dominant firms in nascent markets.
During the seven-day trial in December where the FTC challenged the deal because it allegedly put Meta in prime position to monopolize VR fitness apps, the company questioned how the acquisition of one app in a developing market could harm competition. U.S. District Judge Edward Davila approved the deal in a blow to the agency’s bid to dismantle the tech giant but advanced one of its key legal theories arguing that the purchase of competitors in budding markets can hurt competition. Elon Musk’s Twitter has complied with an Indian government request to delete all links to a BBC documentary critical of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to journalists and free speech advocates in the country.
The first half of the two-part documentary India: The Modi Question aired on BBC Two on Jan. 17. The series investigates the “persistent allegations” against Modi of fanning the flames of Hindu nationalism and prejudice against India’s large Muslim minority. In particular, the doc explores his role in the 2002 riots in the western Indian state of Gujarat, where Modi was chief minister at the time, which left over 1,000 dead, the majority of them Muslims.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Arindam Bagchi has called the documentary “a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative.”
In response, the BBC shared statements on social media saying that the film was “rigorously researched according to the highest editorial standards.

San Francisco, Sep 13 (Ians) Meta-owned Instagram is struggling to woo creators as its short-video making Reels engagement falls against a formidable competition that is coming from its Chinese rival TikTok.
An internal Meta document accessed by The Wall Street Journal shows that Instagram users are spending 17.6 million hours watching Reels daily — less than a tenth when compared to 197.8 million hours users spend on TikTok a day
The report, published in August, claimed that Reels engagement had fallen 13.6 percent over the last four weeks, and “most Reels users have no engagement whatsoever”.
Among the key reasons is that Instagram has struggled to recruit people to make the right kind of content and the lack of original content on Reels.
“Roughly 11 million creators are on the platform in the US, but only about 2.3 million of them, or 20.7 per cent, post on that platform each month,” according to the document.

As you may know, Instagram really wants Reels to happen. It also really, really wants creators to know how important they are, as head Adam Mosseri frequently reiterates in platform update videos.
To both those ends, it’s now testing a creator tipping feature that seems to be exclusive to Reels.
The feature was first spotted by developer Alessandro Paluzzi in late August, and per his tweets was originally called “Content Appreciation.” In screenshots he shared, it had been renamed to “Gifts.”
There’s next to no information about what Gifts would entail, but per Business Insider, it would let users send tips to one another within the Reels section of Instagram.
A spokesperson for Meta, Instagram’s parent company, told Business Insider that Gifts are currently an internal prototype and aren’t being tested in the general user population.

It’s been a long road for Dispo.
The photo-sharing app launched in 2020 and was a hot commodity right out of the gate. Boosted by the star status of co-founder David Dobrik, Dispo announced 20 million in fresh funding just months after finalizing its seed round.
Then, everything went south. Dobrik was forced to depart the company in disgrace after a member of his Vlog Squad was accused of sexual assault. Investors fled and the app was left to figure out what its Dobrik-less approach would look like. It closed a Series A round in June 2020, but it still had to acquire enough users to regain its momentum.
Then, a funny thing happened: One of Dispo’s rivals handed it a golden opportunity. In July of this year, Instagram drew intense backlash when it started prioritizing short-from videos and planned to switch to a TikTok-style feed. Celebs like Kylie Jenner...

The company said this update will roll out globally on a gradual basis, so, users who do not have the option to create a Meta account and Meta Horizon profile right away will get the update soon.
“Our new Meta account structure gives you more flexibility and control, letting you choose how you do and don’t show up — and whether Facebook and/or Instagram is part of your experience in VR and other surfaces where you use your Meta Horizon profile,” the company said in a blogpost.

San Francisco, Aug 11 (Ians) Meta-owned photo-sharing platform Instagram is capable of tracking its users’ actions, text choices and even text input, such as passwords and confidential credit card information, if they visit a link inside the app, says a new report.
The analysis conducted by Felix Krause found that both Instagram and Facebook on iOS use their own in-app browser rather than the one offered by Apple for third-party apps.
Most apps use Apple’s Safari for loading websites, but Instagram and Facebook have been using their own in-app browser to load websites within the app, reports MacRumors.
With their custom-built browser, still based on WebKit, Instagram and Facebook inject a tracking JavaScript code-named “Meta Pixel” into all links and websites shown. With that code, Meta has total freedom to track users’ interactions without their explicit consent, Krause found.
This allows Instagram to monitor everything happening on external websites without the user’s consent,...

After absorbing a wave of criticism on social media, Instagram has decided to pump the brakes on planned changes to its design — at least for now. The social media platform’s top exec, Adam Mosseri, told The Verge that the test version of Instagram’s video-oriented, TikTok-like feed “will be phased out over the next one to two weeks.”
Only a small subset of Instagram users had access to the new feed, and while the Meta-owned platform still wants to reimagine the way its content is consumed, that plan will be put on hold. When Instagram initially rolled out its redesign, it met fierce backlash from celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian, who shared a petition that hoped to “make Instagram Instagram again.”
In announcing the decision to shelve the redesign, Mosseri employed the sort of language that Silicon Valley types often use to excuse their misses.

In the opening minutes of “We Met in Virtual Reality,” a bunch of avatars resembling animals and anime characters enter an open world based on “Jurassic Park,” hop into vehicles, and speed around the landscape with glee as a handheld camera tracks their moves. Later, that same camera visits house parties, dance classes, and a marriage ceremony.
Anyone who hasn’t strapped on a VR headset might think they were watching a low-budget animated movie with glitchy effects, but “We Met in Virtual Reality” is actually a groundbreaking documentary shot exclusively in VRchat, the popular VR social platform. The feature-length debut of UK-based filmmaker Joe Hunting stems from his experiences roaming VRchat over the course of three years, during which time he befriended many of the communities within. Hunting, who supports himself in part by working as a VR event photographer, has provided the most robust opportunity to experience the...

Tribeca Festival is entering the metaverse.
Under a partnership with Meta, 20 titles from Tribeca’s shorts program will be available for the first time on the Meta Quest 2 virtual-reality headset as well as the Tribeca page on Facebook. All of the shorts will stream for free during the festival’s run. The curated shorts collection spans entries dating back to 2019, including those that received less attention in 2020 and ’21 due to the pandemic.
The Tribeca Shorts lineup includes 2022’s “Skin & Bone,” a 17-minute horror film starring Amanda Seyfried (pictured above) and Thomas Sadoski, directed and written by Eli Powers. After a drifter (Sadoski) takes a job on a farm run by a reclusive woman (Seyfried), he begins to suffer from visions of men trapped inside the bodies of animals.

The Wall St. Journal is reporting that Meta Platforms COO Sheryl Sandberg may have been prompted in part to give up her position because of a company investigation into her activities, including a review of her use of corporate resources to help plan her upcoming wedding.
As of May, the review was ongoing, the WSJ said. The investigation is also looking into allegations that Sandberg pressured the U.K.’s Daily Mail to “shelve” an article about Sandberg’s former boyfriend, Activision Blizzard Inc. CEO Bobby Kotick, and a 2014 temporary restraining order against him.
“None of this has anything to do with her personal decision to leave,” said Caroline Nolan, a Meta spokeswoman, to the WSJ. She earlier said that the Kotick matter had been resolved.
The WSJ story also allowed that Sandberg has been “telling people that she feels burned out and that she has become a punching bag for the company’s problems.
