When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

It was announced today in the Hollywood Reporter that Simon Kinberg is taking over the development of the new "Star Trek" feature film, currently working its way through pre-production at Paramount. This new film will be the fourth to be connected to the Kelvin timeline of "Star Trek," a timeline which started with the events of J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" film. As of this writing, Toby Haynes ("Andor") is slated to direct, while Seth Grahame-Smith has signed on to write. Kinberg is a notable Hollywood player who wrote "X-Men: The Last Stand," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," "X-Men: Apocalypse," and "Dark Phoenix" (among many others) and who produced "The New Mutants," "Deadpool," "Logan," "X-Men: First Class," "Cinderella," "The Martian," and "Elysium" (among many others). He is a franchise guy through-and-through, and Paramount likely wanted a new producer with high-profile experience.

Ariana Greenblatt, who appeared opposite Margot Robbie in last year’s Barbie, will be pulling a rabbit out of her hat.
The actress is joining the ensemble cast of Now You See Me 3, Lionsgate’s long-in-the-works installment of its heist caper thrillers.
Many of the original cast — Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco — are expected to return. The original movies also starred Morgan Freeman and Mark Ruffalo, although it’s not clear if those two will return.
Ruben Fleischer is directing the movie, which garnered a mention last week at Lionsgate’s presentation at CinemaCon.
Lionsgate had no comment on the casting, and it’s unclear who wrote the script. Seth Grahame-Smith, the genre scribe behind The Lego Batman Movie and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Eric Warren have penned drafts over the years.

Captain's Log: Stardate 2024. It's been eight years since the USS Enterprise's last voyage on the big screen, with the franchise having since returned to its roots on television. During that period, the property has proliferated thanks to an influx of streaming series that's included everything from a "Next Generation" reunion to a raunchy cartoon and a wonderfully silly musical episode. But through it all, the question has lingered: when will Trekkies get to undertake another mission painted on the largest canvas available?
It's not been for lack of effort on Paramount's part. Oh, Joker, you little scamp. The Clown Prince of Crime is always getting into some mischief or other, whether it's dosing Gotham City with debilitating amounts of laughing gas in "Batman: The Animated Series," embarking on a terror campaign straight out of the US military playbook in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," or starting beef with Common while having "Damaged" tattooed in his forehead in that one fever dream of a movie that we've collectively agreed upon to never mention again. But the supervillain is saving perhaps his most diabolical scheme for last.

Despite “Barbie’s” recent box office domination, the history of toy-to-film franchises has not always been easy. Often dismissed as a cash grab (“Battleship”) or popcorn fare, turning toys into critically and commercially successful content is no skate in the park.
For Mattel and co, there was another toy that had to walk before “Barbie” could fly: Lego. Written and directed by Lord and Miller, “The Lego Movie” proved that movies based on toys could be so much more than a 90-minute commercial when it was released ten years ago. Although snubbed at the Oscars (not even garnering a nomination for best animated film), the Warner Bros. pic — like its eventual successor “Barbie” — was a hit with both audiences and critics.
Buoyed by “The Lego Movie’s” success, a string of spin-offs and sequels quickly followed – “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” in 2017 and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part...

When a franchise has lasted for upwards of half a century and is still going strong, the decision-makers in charge will inevitably run into one pressing question above all others: Where do we go next? "Star Trek" became a beloved institution among the nerdiest of fans for a pretty good reason, largely because of its wholesale commitment to treading new ground and envisioning a new future. But with the franchise firing on all cylinders these days and no signs of slowing down anytime soon, writers have become increasingly hard-pressed to boldly go where no others have gone before ... literally speaking, that is, since recent "Star Trek" shows like "Strange New Worlds," "Lower Decks," "Discovery," "Picard," and more have filled in all sorts of gaps in the official canon.

The new DC cinematic universe is entering a fresh new stage, and the latest news shows it's not afraid to do stuff that's a little weird or out of left field. According to a report by The InSneider, DC Studios is developing an untitled animated feature based on the comic series "Jurassic League," which was released in 2022 as a limited six-issue run. The movie will be about "a prehistoric version of Earth that see heroes and villains as dinosaurs." James Gunn, co-ceo of DC Studios and director of "The Suicide Squad," is set to produce, with Brian Lynch writing the script.
If Brian Lynch sounds like a familiar name, you might recognize it from the credits for "Puss in Boots," the "Secret Life of Pets" movies, and both "Minions" and "Minions: The Rise of Gru." All signs seem to confirm that this new dinosaur superhero film will be for children first and foremost,...

As reported in Deadline today, Paramount has officially announced that they are developing a new "Star Trek" feature film. It will be the first "Star Trek" movie since the release of "Star Trek Beyond" in 2016, but the fourteenth "Star Trek" film overall.
The new film will be directed by Toby Haynes, a prolific British television director who has helmed episodes of "M.I. High," "Doctor Who," and the British version of "Utopia." His most recent directing job was six episodes of the hit "Star Wars" series "Andor." Interestingly, he also directed the celebrated "Black Mirror" episode "USS Callister," which was a darkly humorous riff on "Star Trek" and science fiction fandom. He also directed the 2019 TV movie "Brexit: The Uncivil War" starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The new "Star Trek" film is slated to be written by Seth Grahame-Smith, the author of the books "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

A new “Star Trek” film is in the works at Paramount with “Andor’s” Toby Haynes on board to direct and Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script, Variety has confirmed.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the upcoming feature will be an origin story that is set decades before 2009’s “Star Trek,” as well as an expansion of the “Star Trek” universe. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.
Meanwhile, the fourth installment of the rebooted “Star Trek” film series remains in development, with the studio describing it as the “final chapter.” In the third film, 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” the crew of the USS Enterprise crash-lands on a mysterious world after being attacked by the lizard-like dictator Krall (Idris Elba).
A fourth “Star Trek” movie starring Chris Pine was first announced in July of 2016, with Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg expected to return.

Matthew’s Perry died from a reported drowning, but his legacy as Friends’ Chandler Bing remains for fans, royalty included. Prince Harry, a self-described “Friends fanatic,” even called himself “ a Chandler” after Perry’s Chandler Bing character on the iconic TV series.
Prince Harry called himself a ‘Chandler’ from ‘Friends’ in ‘Spare’
In between Harry’s recollection of major life events, such as Princess Diana’s death, his May 2018 royal wedding, and the 2020 Sandringham Summit, were little details about the duke in Spare. Among them was his love of Friends and the character he identified with most.
At one point in his best-selling memoir, Harry explained how he spent a lot of time watching Friends in the summer of 2013. The reason, he said, had to do with “toggling between bouts of debilitating lethargy and terrifying panic attacks, (vis Spare).
So Harry spent most of his time at home watching the TV show.

Exclusive: Amidst one of the most creatively fertile periods in his career to date, actor Michael Cera has taken on new agents at CAA.
The in-demand Canadian actor is coming off of a standout role in Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s triumphant live-action take on the Mattel doll for Warner Bros, which has thus far grossed over $1.4B worldwide and seems likely to figure heavily in the awards race to come.
In addition to the highest-grossing film of the year, the fantasy comedy penned by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach has set records as the top-grossing title ever released by Warner Bros, and the highest-grossing film from a solo female director. Starring alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Cera portrayed Allan, the lovably awkward best friend of Ken who, unlike the central characters, has no counterpart in his universe.

“Blue Beetle,” now in theaters, is the latest movie that mines the rich DC Comics catalog to bring a new superhero to the forefront. In this case it’s Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), who lives in the fictional, superhero-free coastal Texas town of Palmera City. He comes from a more ethnic neighborhood and his family is facing eviction from the evil, monolithic Kord Industries. All seems hopeless, until a magical intergalactic scarab fuses with him, turning him into the Blue Beetle.
This is all well and good (and the movie is a ton of fun) but the question remains: where does “Blue Beetle” fit into what was once known as the DC Extended Universe and is now being referred to, simply, as the DC Universe? The question has even more importance after “The Flash” earlier this summer, which introduced both time travel and multiverse-hopping to the DC Universe.

In recognition of the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie this week, we thought we would take a look at the ten highest-grossing movies based on toys that have been made (so far at least). This list was constructed using domestic box office totals that have also been adjusted for inflation (according to data and synopses procured from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers). So, enough yapping, here are the ten highest-grossing films based on toys.
10. My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) Original Domestic Gross: $21,885,107
Adjusted Domestic Gross: $25,496,025
A dark force threatens Ponyville, and the Mane 6—Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity— embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship to save their home.
9. Mars Attacks! (1996) Original Domestic Gross: $37,771,017
Adjusted Domestic Gross: $78,056,645
Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable weapons and a cruel sense of humor.

Whether it’s the questionable FX, the lead star’s very controversial dalliances, or just audiences being burned one too many times by Comic Book Films, there’s one movie that is all anyone can talk about. And look, I get it. There was a lot of craziness that went on during this production and had more people come and go due to creative differences than any movie we’ve covered on the show.
Warning you guys and gals right now, if you haven’t seen The Flash, you’re going to want to turn back now, because this is where things get Super spoilery.
Warner Brothers tried getting a Flash movie off the ground in the late 80’s with comic writer Jeph Loeb being brought in to write the screenplay. Unfortunately nothing ever came of the property until 2004 when David S Goyer signed on to write, direct and produce a new Flash.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ tentpole summer release, “The Flash,” finally hits theaters this weekend, but the superhero movie had been beset by delays and off-screen controversies involving star Ezra Miller in the years before its release.
“The Flash” was initially revealed back in October 2014 as part of the inaugural DC Universe slate. It received a 2018 release date, alongside eventual releases like “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad,” “Wonder Woman,” “Aquaman” and “Shazam.” However, parts of that plan didn’t come to fruition. Standalone “Cyborg” and “Green Lantern” movies were scrapped, and a two-part “Justice League” movie by Zack Snyder became one film.
Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, first debuted as the Flash in a cameo in 2016’s “Batman v Superman” and “Suicide Squad,” before joining the cast of “Justice League” in 2017. Ahead of the solo “Flash” movie, their only other appearances as the hero were cameos...

Plenty of fans make art inspired by their favorite pop culture, but few end up getting the seal of approval from the original work’s creator. That’s what happened to one fan of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” who recreated the movie’s trailer entirely in Lego form and got a huge thumbs up from the film’s co-writer and co-producer, Phil Lord.

I may be ready to give up on Nic Cage after this movie if I’m honest. Actually, that may be a tad harsh because I do feel like he is doing his best with the half-baked mindless script he was given. Cage as Dracula alone was the selling point of Renfield and as I would come to find out, Cage is not even in the damn film all that much!
I realise that I’m not exactly burying the lead here in terms of how I felt about Renfield but don’t worry because it’s not all bad. Let’s jump into it….

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. For better or worse, the next big bet in Hollywood right now is video games. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is the biggest film of 2023 so far. "The Last of Us" earned strong reviews from television critics, although some game critics were more skeptical. Even the anime series "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" -- a spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077" -- sniped anime of the year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Leading the charge was 2020's "Sonic the Hedgehog," which survived terrible initial press to score the best opening weekend box office ever for a video game film at the time of its release. A committed performance by Jim Carrey helped, as did a Sonic redesign led by Tyson Hesse and a hard-working team of visual effects artists. Its sequel, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," made even more money.
Next up we've "Knuckles," a Paramount+ television series featuring everybody's favorite grumpy echidna voiced by Idris Elba.

A committed performance by Jim Carrey helped, as did a Sonic redesign led by Tyson Hesse and a hard-working team of visual effects artists. Its sequel, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," made even more money.

In the new horror comedy monster flick Renfield, actor Nicholas Hoult is the titular character, a human familiar who has spent more than a century in servitude to the world’s worst boss, the vampire Count Dracula, played with relish by Nicolas Cage.
And as directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie), and based on a story by producer Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), this Universal film adds a chapter to Tod Browning’s classic 1931 Dracula, imagining that Bram Stoker’s vampire lived on before ultimately taking refuge in modern-day New Orleans. As he recovers from his latest row with slayers, Renfield is tasked with providing adequate blood to aid in his boss’ healing. Instead the servant begins to question his lot in life and the co-dependent relationship he has with Dracula.

As the old adage goes, a hero is only as good as their villain. In Batman's case, he's one of the greatest superheroes of all time, thanks in no small part to his arch-nemesis, the Joker. There aren't many classic Batman tales where the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't factor in some way. He's an astonishing character, depicted in various forms on the big and small screen. Who can forget Jack Nicholson's portrayal in 1989's "Batman," directed by Tim Burton? Or Cesar Romano's campy take in the classic "Batman" TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward? Heck, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won Academy Awards for donning white makeup and the iconic purple suit in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and Todd Phillips' "Joker." There's no end to Joker's madness, and seeing the different iterations is always fascinating.
Perhaps the most memorable depiction of Joker comes from Mark Hamill,...

Dracula has made his way from the novel to the big screen, and it gives us chills to watch this horrendous persona in theatres, but ‘Renfield’ is an exception. Directed by Chris McKay, who is famous for ‘The Lego Movie’, ‘The Lego Batman Movie’, and ‘The Tomorrow War’, and with a cast that boasts Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Brandon Scott Jones, and Ben Schwartz, ‘Renfield’ seems worth the hype it has created. Here are 5 reasons why you shouldn’t miss this movie:
Nicolas Cage as Dracula would be enough to make any movie a must-see! Hell Yes!
Watching Nicolas Cage as Dracula on the Big screen is the type of entertainment that you cannot miss. “Some call me The Dark One. Others, the Lord of Death. To most, I am Dracula,” he growls as he makes his dramatic entrance. It almost feels like he was Born to play this role.

Although first inclinations might caution one to expect some wildly over-the-top performances in something like Renfield, especially given some of the talented names involved, the film manages to deliver a uniquely entertaining comedic/horror experience that never strays too far from the essence of both genres.
This modern take on the classic monster tale follows Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) as he serves as the preparer of his master’s – who happens to be Dracula (Nicolas Cage) – meals and the procurer of his other needs and wants. Now, however, after attending a support group for victims of codependency in an effort to gather victims for his master, Renfield begins to believe that perhaps there may be a life for him that doesn’t depend on his never-ending servitude to The Prince of Darkness.

Renfield’s a fun, albeit lightweight, take on Dracula and his bug-eating minion, lifted by the entertaining performances of Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage. There are exploding heads, an ample smattering of blood, guts, and gore, and the creative use of disembodied arms as weapons. But for all its onscreen carnage, this R-rated horror comedy is really just a campy good time, forgettable yet enjoyable enough while it lasts.
It’s a no-brainer to cast Nicolas Cage as Dracula, and the Oscar-winning actor sinks his teeth into the role with a joyous, demented glee. Very seldom is Renfield’s Dracula viewed as an actual threat to humanity, despite the film’s simple plot which suggests Dracula is positioning himself as a god who desires to be worshipped by his food source.

In “Renfield,” an outrageous new take on Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” told from the point of view of the count’s perpetually put-upon manservant (played here by Nicholas Hoult), the notion of being too over-the-top is considered and then hastily breezed by. In the opening sequence alone, an ancient curse is placed on the dark prince; when Dracula is freed he turns into a vaporous mist and explodes a priest from the inside. Then Dracula catches on fire and is turned into a crispy skeleton.
The sequence is telling both for its bold tonal shifts and for the manic approach to action. It’s the type of scene you would say could only be devised and executed by a man well-versed in animation. (The crispy skeleton bit could have been out of an old “Looney Tunes” Roadrunner cartoon.) And you would be right. “Renfield” was brought to life by Chris McKay,...
