His unique blend of humor, heart, and action has resonated with audiences worldwide, solidifying his position as a major force in the ever-evolving comic book movie landscape.
A still from Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
The Guardians were not very famous in comics when compared to other teams. However, Gunn helped make them a global name. While fans believe that the MCU has seen a dip in quality post-Endgame, everyone is all-praise for Gunn’s GotG Volume 3. Besides its emotionally packed story, the movie also had an action scene which is considered to be one of the best in the MCU.

First of all – is the BBC allowed to air a drama without a detective or a horse-drawn carriage in it? Can somebody check?
Crime and period’s drama dominance isn’t the only modern TV trend bucked by The Way. Actor Michael Sheen’s directorial debut is a wild throwback to the society-falls-apart TV of the past: Threads. The Year of the Sex Olympics. The Guardians. Cold Lazarus… all those wiggy, provocative Nigel Kneale and Dennis Potter stories that aimed for more than just audience share.
Written by Sherwood and Quiz’s James Graham, and co-created with documentary maker Adam Curtis, The Way also aims high – too high for what it’s able to achieve in three episodes, making it much more a curio than a must-see.
The drama imagines a Welsh civil uprising that turns the country into a closed-border police state and its people into persecution-fleeing refugees. It follows the Driscolls,...

Longtime James Gunn fans might have felt a twinge of recognition while watching "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" when our heroes don multicolored space suits and traipse around on a giant, fleshy planetoid called the Orgoscope. A living planet isn't exactly new to the MCU (Star-Lord's father was one himself), but the Orgoscope is something different. It's not a celestial body, more an organic one, made up of living tissue. Gross, irritated skin, coarse hair and nasty follicles, that kind of thing.
The Guardians need to infiltrate this organic ... thing ... in order to retrieve information that could very well save Rocket's life. It's a gross job, but a necessary one.
So, when they approached building this particularly disgusting location, you'd think they would have some leverage go a little cartoony with it. I mean, there's not a lot of fleshy, hairy planetoids out there to compare this one to,...

James Gunn is showing off his geeky side.
The director has become a staple in the comic book cinematic universe, helming the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films for Marvel and becoming the new creative head for DC Films – but more than anything, Gunn is a film fan.
Speaking with GQ about the final entry in the franchise “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, the director ranked his favourite comic book movies – even revealing a surprising inspiration for the new film.

Way to go, a-holes! Following a relatively modest opening weekend, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is bucking the trend when it comes to a common feature of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies: the big second weekend drop. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trilogy-closer is on track to add $58 million to its domestic box office total this weekend, which would be a drop of just 51 percent from its debut. That's the strongest second weekend hold for an MCU movie since 2019's "Spider-Man: Far From Home."
To compare it to another Marvel threequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is performing similarly to "Thor: Ragnarok," which was seen as a triumphant comeback after the mediocrity of "Thor: The Dark World" and dropped just 53.5 percent in its second weekend. Like "Ragnarok," "Vol. 3" has been very well-received by critics and fans alike, with an A CinemaScore from audience polling and a "Certified Fresh...

The two primary features of James Gunn's multiple "Guardians of the Galaxy" projects are their quirkiness and their unabashed sentimentality. To assure the former, Gunn made his title team a group of weirdo outsiders who are all possessed of a playfully semi-ignorant, devil-may-care attitude that communicated a flip irreverence toward the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a series usually bogged down by overtly earnest mythmaking. On the other side of things, the outsider characters were, over the course of their multiple appearances, careful to tell each other about their respective trauma and issues with abusive fathers. The Guardians, then, didn't merely come together as a team, but emerged as a found family, holding each other for mutual warmth.
The Guardians movies, sadly, don't always strike a great balance between their flippant tone and their emotional leanings. The Guardians, as part of their job, kill enemy soldiers by the score and then...

Ready for the farewell tour?
The marketing campaign for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” savvily cooked up by the Marvel Studios and Disney teams, has positioned it as the last hurrah for the team that formed in 2014 with the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” and who have endured for two sequels, appearances in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as “Thor: Love and Thunder” and their very own seasonal celebration, 2022’s “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.” (They also have theme park attractions at Disney’s California Adventure in California and Epcot at Walt Disney World in Florida.)
Now that the final installment is here, we thought we’d break down what happens at the end of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and its implications for the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (or is it Multiverse?)

It’s an obvious point to make, but allow us just to state it once again, for the record: Andy Dwyer from Parks And Recreation really glowed up, didn’t he? Since the first Guardians Of The Galaxy movie in 2014, Chris Pratt: devilishly handsome, able to channel righteous anger, and capable of big stunt-filled set-pieces just as much as he is comedic ones.
He’s the star of several blockbuster franchises, has a number of standout voice turns under his belt, and his filmography is littered with darker, more dramatic roles, too. But which is his best? Only one way to find out: dance off, bro. Read Empire’s list of Chris Pratt’s 10 best movies now:
10. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Genuinely good sequels are something the Jurassic Park movies have historically found harder to come by than triceratops eggs, but this genuinely good sequel, uh, found a way.

One of the most devastating deaths in 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War" is the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), who's sacrificed by her father, Thanos (Josh Brolin), so he can get all the Infinity Stones. However, 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" - which had even more losses of iconic Marvel heroes - undid Gamora's ending. The movie, which involves a complicated time-travel plot, sees Thanos from 2014 come into "Endgame"'s present day (in 2023) with Gamora by his side. That Gamora not only hasn't left Thanos's service, but she's also never met any of the Guardians besides her sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), whom she has a contentious relationship with.
At the end of the movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) uses the Infinity Gauntlet to instantly kill Thanos and his army; the action also kills Tony himself. But, somehow, Tony doesn't kill 2014 Gamora, even though she's technically on Thanos's side. Back in 2019 at Comic-Con,...

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” — the third and final installment in James Gunn’s spacefaring superhero saga — opens this Friday.
The first film introduced a band of rag-tag rebels, the Guardians, led by Star-Lord, who ended up playing a pivotal role in the Infinity Saga, largely due to Gamora’s ties to Thanos.
Now, if the last paragraph made total sense to you, you’re probably all set to watch “Vol 3.”
But if you need a refresher — or crash course — into the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies and how they fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, read on. Here’s your viewing shortlist of shows and films — in chronological order — to stream on Disney+ in preparation for Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. centers around the concept of family – not necessarily defined by blood, but rather by choice. As the motley crew embarks on their final journey, it’s clear that family means always standing by each other’s side, no matter what.
James Gunn has expertly guided the three Guardians of the Galaxy films, delivering some of the MCU’s most comical – and downright goofy – moments with this weird and wild trilogy. However, with this final outing of the band of misfits, audiences are treated to a deeply moving and unexpectedly heartbreaking storyline, making it one of the MCU’s most emotionally engaging films to date.

In the vast tapestry that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies — based on the comics by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning — filled the role of "quirky outsiders." This is a gargantuan feat, given the number of gods, aliens, monsters, and other extraordinary beings found throughout the series. The team consisted of a single human being, Peter (Chris Pratt) who was abducted by a UFO as a child, and had eventually fallen into a family-like relationship with a team of mutants and alien warriors. There was Rocket Raccoon (voice of Bradley Cooper), a talking tree named Groot (Vin Diesel), a deadly assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), her mostly-mechanical sister Nebula (Karen Gillen), a literal-minded bruiser named Drax (Dave Bautista), and the gentle psychic Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

There’s a sense of an ending in part three of the Guardians trilogy, but not in the sense of the franchise actually, you know, coming to an end. Like almost all Marvel movies these days, it presents a continuum, giving all the main players an out while leaving the door wide open to a fourth iteration should they have a change of heart. From the evidence here, that’s entirely possible — there’s no sign of burnout in the adventures of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and co. However, there are signs of wear and tear in the conventions of the series: once its most refreshing aspect, the mixtape soundtrack seems more of a burden now, having long abandoned the conceit of the original C90.
The kick-off this time is an acoustic version of Radiohead’s “Creep”, which serves as a motif for Rocket Raccoon, whose backstory is the crux of Vol.

James Gunn may now be orchestrating the future of DC — he's got a full slate ahead of him, and he's directing the first of them, "Superman: Legacy" — but he's still personally invested in Marvel for a little while. The filmmaker is set to wrap up the trilogy that he kicked off almost a decade ago with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which arrives six years on from its predecessor thanks to his firing over controversial old tweets, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Gunn's work on "The Suicide Squad."

In another sign of the return to China for Marvel after a long drought, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been set for a day-and-date release on May 5. The James Gunn-directed finale in the series is due to hit North American cinemas that same day while international rollout will begin on May 3. (Check out the new China poster below.)
This marks the third Marvel title to secure a theatrical release in China following a three-and-a-half year period during which no movies featuring a Marvel character gained entry to the world’s second largest box office market. Late Bloomers is a new comedy film having its world premiere at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, on Friday. To discuss the making of the film, screenwriter Anna Greenfield, director Lisa Steen (her feature debut) and star Karen Gillan joined The Hollywood Reporter in its SXSW Studio.

New series ‘MPower’ on Disney+ Hotstar spotlight several of the MCU’s most inspirational women heroes. “Every hero has an epic origin story and so does this series,” said Executive Producer Justin W. Hochberg. “When I conceived ‘MPower’, I did it out of love for my teen daughter so she would have more icons to look up to, voices to learn from and role models to help her impact the world. Today, that vision is now a reality thanks to Brie Larsen, Elizabeth Olsen, the women of Wakanda and Zoë Saldaña, whose leadership was ‘Mpowering.’”
Saldaña is featured in episode four and serves as an Executive Producer of the series alongside Cisely and Mariel Saldana for Cinestar Pictures. “‘MPower’ is a tribute to women’s representation and empowerment,” she said. “We’re enthused to have the involvement of a diverse group of women whose voices and stories will serve as a source of inspiration.

DC studios boss James Gunn hit out at a social media commenter who questioned the casting of Guardians of the Galaxy’s newest villain.
The director shared his excitement about Chukwudi Iwuji joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as The High Evolutionary on his Instagram Monday (6 March).
Nigerian-British actor Iwuji will play Rocket’s creator in the franchise’s third and final instalment, which is due to be released in cinemas 5 May.
“Can’t wait for you all to meet this guy. @chukwudi_iwuji #GotGVol3 #highevolutionary,” Gunn captioned his post alongside a photo of the actor in character.
Unfortunately, some people in Gunn’s comments questioned Iwuju’s casting due to his skin colour, despite the fact that the character is purple in the comics.
“Damnit… another white guy they made into a black guy,” one troll wrote. “Why couldn’t they just leave him white or i dont know…pick a different minority?...

"Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" scribe Jeff Loveness may have brought his experience in creating whacky science-fiction tales due to his time as a writer on "Rick and Morty," but his intimate knowledge of Marvel Comics stems directly from the superhero books he worked on. Loveness has written for both Marvel and DC, as well as for the independent publisher Boom! Studios, covering "Shazam!," "Spider-Man," and "Nova." The latter is near and dear to Loveness' heart, so it's no surprise that the writer has a few ideas about how the character can translate to the screen.

Marvel Comics "Guardians of the Galaxy" #1, available April 12, 2023, is written by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and illustrated by Kev Walker, with a great new line of variant covers:
"...one year ago, the 'Guardians' were on top of the galaxy. After the 'Infinity Wars' had torn them apart, 'Peter Quill' and his surrogate family had slowly begun pulling themselves back together again and healing in response to then-recent threats: The near-resurrection of 'Thanos', the return of the 'Church of Universal Truth' and the reborn 'Olympian Gods'.
"In the wake of concurrent major cosmic upheavals, the team emerged from all these trials in its largest, most powerful, and most optimistic incarnation yet. This re-energized era of the team culminated with the Guardians joining forces with the 'Mutants of Krakoa' to save the galaxy from the demonic entity 'Dormmamu'.

Before Chris Pratt established himself as an action hero, he received criticism about his weight. And when he was told he was “too fat” for a role, the actor went on a crash diet and stopped drinking to get it. Here’s how it went down:
Chris Pratt was told he was ‘too fat’ for his ‘Moneyball’ role Moneyball stars Chris Pratt, Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in 2011 | Michael Tran/FilmMagic Michael Tran/FilmMagic
Pratt rose to fame in the early 2000s as Andy Dwyer in the hit NBC sitcom, Parks and Recreation. And by 2010, he had appeared in nearly a dozen comedy films, including Bride Wars and Deep in the Valley.
But in 2011, the future Guardians of the Galaxy star made a pivot to drama with the role of Scott Hatteberg in Moneyball. However, when he first auditioned for the part, the actor was told he needed to lose weight.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be pulling at our heartstrings when it hits theaters this summer, kicking off what promises to be an exciting year for blockbusters filled with a bunch of highly anticipated movies. Of course, it wouldn't be a Marvel movie without a plethora of merchandise accompany it. Considering this is meant to be the last ride for this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, you can bet that Disney will be going all out, especially with a flashback to the adorable baby version of the feisty Rocket Raccoon making an appearance.
Hasbro's Marvel Legends line of action figures always honors the latest Marvel Studios movie with a line of new toys (via GameRant), and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is no different. However, this is the first time that the line of figures has actually had such a uniform appearance, and we mean that literally.

Disney and Marvel have bumped back the release of “The Marvels,” the direct sequel to both “Captain Marvel” and the series “Ms. Marvel,” to November 10 after it was originally scheduled to debut in theaters in late July. As a result, they’ve moved up “Haunted Mansion” a few weeks into the open slot slot; that film was originally scheduled to debut August 11.
But don’t immediately assume that a date change of that size is a bad sign for the movie (though you can’t rule it out entirely). Post-production or VFX issues can always be a potential culprit in these delays, but Disney debuted some footage that played warmly at D23 last year, and there’s no indication that’s the case here.

So, has it been three months already? A few days more, actually, since we took our last trip into the magnificent Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. And as its (most likely) Oscar win looms, we’re taking another trek to that magical place, with a hero we’ve not visited in four years. Oh, and the actual locale is not a foreign land as with the previous flick and last year’s Thor, or the maddening multiverse of Doctor Strange and Spidey. In a few more months we’ll be blasting back to outer space with those Guardians, which leaves us the “opposite destination journey”: inner space. This “area” was a big ‘factor” in the Endgame,...

"Werewolf by Night" really stood out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a single hour based on the comic book character of the same name and was (sort of) a first shot across the bow for the idea of a special rather than a series or a full-length feature film. It was followed by a presentation connected to the main MCU, "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special."
Of course, Marvel has done something akin to this before in the form of 3- to 15-minute short films called One Shots that align with their features like "All Hail the King" and "Agent Carter" which went with "Iron Man 3" and "The Consultant" that was spawned by "Thor." "Werewolf by Night," however, was more in the style of holiday specials like the animated "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" from 1966 that used to air on television around Halloween.

Los Angeles, Feb 13 (Ians) The gang’s all back together in Marvel’s new trailer for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3′, which aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday evening (US Time). But the Guardians’ reunion with Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana, is far from sentimental, reports ‘Variety’.
This Super Bowl trailer marked the first time that Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord has reunited with his ex Gamora, who was killed by her father Thanos during ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.
An alternate Gamora, with no memory of Star-Lord, returned in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Now, Star-Lord must try to jog this new Gamora’s memory as the Guardians embark on one final mission against Chukwudi Iwuji’s villain the High Evolutionary, ‘Variety’ adds.
The first official trailer, according to ‘Variety’, was unveiled in December 2022, showing the Guardians teaming up for a perilous mission “one last time”, as Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) definitively assures Star-Lord.

Before Rihanna took the stage for the highly anticipated halftime show, Peter Quill and the crew of the Benatar were tapped as her opening act at the "Super Bowl" this year. Unfortunately, they didn't travel from Knowhere and land the ship in State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona to rock the house. Instead, Marvel Studios unveiled a brand new trailer for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
Considerably less somber and ominous than the first preview for the upcoming Phase Five film, the latest one brings us back to the joke-cracking badasses that we've come to know and love over the past decade. However, as this is the final chapter of this story with some extremely high stakes, it definitely sets the tone for an epic conclusion for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Mantis, Nebula, Rocket, and Groot.

Given that James Gunn has consistently said that this will be the last Guardians of The Galaxy movie to feature all the current team (and Gunn's own departure to run DC's movie and TV arm), you'd be forgiven for thinking that this could be the end for one, possibly more of the Guardians. And despite a slightly more lighthearted Super Bowl trailer, there is still that feeling here…
Facing off against the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), who has plans to create a "perfect society" – and seems to be the one behind the experiments that created Rocket – the Guardians are under threat as always, and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is still not over the fact that the person he loves (Zoe Saldana's Gamora) died and came back via time-jumping trickery, but is now "a dick". Still, there's always Nebula (Karen Gillan)… apparently.

Marvel delighted fans on Sunday night by dropping a surprise trailer for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″ during the first quarter of Super Bowl Lvii. The film sees Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, and Vin Diesel returning for one last ride through the cosmos of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Unsurprisingly, the trailer puts Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon in the spotlight. Franchise director James Gunn has never tried to hide that the third and final film in the series is centered around Rocket.

Phase 5 of the MCU is about to kick off with “Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania,” but not long after that comes “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.” While the Guardians had supporting roles in Taika Waititi‘s “Thor: Love And Thunder,” and turned up recently in “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” this final edition of the franchise—at least the final installment for writer/director James Gunn—promises to be a big epic finale which will reunite the Guardians with Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, who’s been missing in action since “Avengers: Endgame.”
James Gunn’s tweets about it promise a story he “has been cooking up for years,” and in the past, he’s described it as “so big and dark.”

The Guardians are going on one last adventure in the Super Bowl trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The film from writer-director James Gunn stars stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Will Poulter, who plays the classic Marvel character Adam Warlock.
Gunn has made a home for himself at Marvel since directing the first Guardians movie, released in 2014. He followed that up with a 2017 sequel, and served as executive producer on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame before directing the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, released on Disney+ last year. But Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks Gunn’s final Marvel movie, as the filmmaker is now deep in rival DC territory. He is co-head of DC Studios and is working to launch a slate of films, including a Superman feature he is writing.

Parting is such sweet sorrow. After more than a decade of laughter, thrills, and some great tunes, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy has finally coming to an end. The live-action cinematic adventures of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) will close out with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," launching into theaters on May 5, 2023, and audiences should be prepared to bring tissues. Gunn has promised that the trilogy-ender is a real tear-jerker, because some of the Guardians are going to end up six feet under.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will follow the Guardians on their own for the first time since the tragic events "Avengers: Endgame", and they'll be battling the High Evolutionary (the eternally excellent Chukwudi Iwuji), an evil scientist who probably had something to do with Rocket's experimental and painful origin.

Marvel Studios released a new trailer for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” during the Super Bowl, teasing the final chapter of the story of the MCU’s intergalactic ragtag family of superheroes.
The new trailer, which you can watch above, puts the spotlight on the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), the unethical scientist responsible for turning an innocent raccoon into the gun-wielding Rocket through painful surgery and genetic manipulation. We even see Rocket get marked with the experiment tag “89P13.”
“He didn’t want to make things perfect,” bemoans Rocket. “He just hated things the way they are.”
Writer-director James Gunn, who is bringing his time with Marvel to an end as he prepares to launch a rebooted DC Universe, has said that “Vol. 3” will mark the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy in its current iteration. Dave Bautista has also said that this will be his last film as Drax the Destroyer.

Sometimes it's hard to remember that the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn't always the mega-franchise it is now. Before all the Disney+ shows, theme parks, and "Avengers"-themed cruises, there was the humble beginning of Jon Faverau's "Iron Man." In what would end up being the blueprint for many more MCU movies to come, the first "Iron Man" film worked thanks to the passionate team behind it, and perhaps the most critical part of it all was the casting of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark. The actor would become synonymous with the character of Iron Man, and while the casting looks like a no-brainer now, back when the MCU was just starting, Downey was apparently the biggest risk when making the movie.
Needless to say, the risk paid off in spades. Downey's Iron Man would continue to grow and evolve, with new emotional weight behind every subsequent movie the character appeared in.
