Art house streamer Mubi has picked up worldwide rights for Witches, the new documentary feature from British director Elizabeth Sankey (Romantic Comedy) and will roll out the movie globally following its world premiere in the Viewpoints section of the Tribeca Festival in June.
Inspired by Sankey’s own struggles with mental health, the film draws connections between postpartum depression and the history and cinematic representation of witches in Western society.
“I started making Witches soon after being released from the psychiatric ward [for postpartum illness] as a way of trying to process what had happened to me,” said Sankey. “I researched the history of women in medicine and found they were once the main healers in their communities, but that ended with the 16th century witch trials. I also read about the women of this period who “confessed” to being witches without torture. Their symptoms were the same as mine — depression, suicidal ideation,...

Serbian director Emilija Gašić will follow International Film Festival Rotterdam premiere “78 Days” with the “atmospheric and tense” psychological thriller “Witches,” she reveals to Variety exclusively.
“I’ve always been drawn to scary elements in films — especially if there are moments of comic relief. Growing up in Serbia, I was surrounded by stories and legends. There are so many superstitions and traditions that date back to pagan times.”
Her new film will focus on a woman going through menopause, without support from her loved ones or the healthcare system. Desperate, she turns to an elderly woman for help, a folk healer from a nearby village. Soon, she is asked to perform a series of rituals in order to lift a supposed curse.
“In some villages, there are still these revered healers. I am interested in tapping into this heritage because it’s so rich and really unlike anything else we have seen,...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
For the 25th entry of this editorial series (!), we’re looking at the lone Amityville directed solo by a woman: Rebecca Matthews’ Witches of Amityville Academy (2020). Also known as Amityville Witches or Witches of Amityville, this British production is another “Amityville in name only.” That means the characters say the word, but it has no bearing to haunted objects and/or its DeFeo predecessors. In fact, the film is closer in tone and visual aesthetic to a soap opera than the preceding 26 titles.
Screenwriter Tom Joliffe opens the film with not one, but two cold opens. The first features witches being hanged in 1602, while the second jumps ahead to the present day as white magic sisters Sam (Kira Reed Lorsch), Lucy (Donna Spangler...

Spellbound is what you would get if Hulu and Disney got married. This show is reminiscent of the many Disney teen dramas about following a path to your dream and being divided between two desirable and equally essential choices. The series follows a 15-year-old Cece from the US who has just moved to Paris to learn at a prestigious ballet school. As is expected of Americans, she’s incapable of sticking to the rules and is a fish out of water who creates her own channels. But, soon she learns that she’s going to be shipped back when the school has picked too many students. In the middle of this chaos, she’s been told that she’s actually a Wizen. Cece is tasked with saving the world, but she just wants to be a great dancer, what will she choose, and will she have help on her way?...

There is a lot to be said about consuming a long-run manga series, spending years following the exploits of your favorite characters, and seeing your collection grow. Many of the titles with the most accolades manage to weave these long expansive stories that make them fan favorites and generate a lot of conversation within the fandom.
However, single-volume manga offers its benefits and the often under-touted format forces its creators to make a strong impact within the confines of a short narrative story. Personally, these shorter series make up some of my all-time favorite reads as well as act as perfect starting points to recommend to others who are interested in the medium but are unwilling to commit to dozens of volumes. Furthermore, these titles are ideal for revisits, casual re-reads on a nice day outside, or lounging at home.
In no particular order, here are 12 outstanding single-volume manga releases...

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
The Unheard
The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.
Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. She’s the first patient in the clinical trial to show positive results,...

While Anjelica Huston is the daughter of iconic, award-winning film director John Huston, she’s become a legend herself over several decades as a fashion model, actor, and director. Huston’s enjoyed a highly successful career racking up many awards including an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and several Emmy nominations. Still working today, she is regarded as one of the finest actors of her generation. And that’s in part why she chose not to become a mom.

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s stage adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel Hamnet, a tale of love and heartbreak concerning Agnes Hathaway and her beloved one William Shakespeare, has taken the unheralded step of announcing its West End transfer before it has has even opened in the famous playwright’s place of birth.

The play, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti — whose version of Life of Pi is on Broadway — directed by Erica Whyman and starring Madeleine Mantock begins performances at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 1 through June 17.

But following a “tsunami” of interest from eager ticket buyers, the show will transfer after its run in Stratford to London’s Garrick Theatre for 14 weeks from September 30 through January 6.
If the phenomenal level of interest is maintained, then expect seats at the Garrick to be hard to come by after they go on priority sale from March 28, with public booking from April 6.
The plain fact is that O’Farrell’s engrossing novel has sold more than 1.5 million copies and has fans on every continent.
Her story of the plain-speaking, free-spirited Agnes Hathaway; her relationship with Shakespeare; the heartbreaking death of Hamnet, their 11-year-old son; and how that tragedy inspired the Bard to write Hamlet; touched a nerve coming out as it did during the pandemic. “It’s totally a love story, it’s very romantic,” Chakrabarti told us.
‘Hamnet’ director Erica Whyman
Also, Chakrabarti continued: “Shakespeare is endlessly fascinating because we are trying to work out who was the man behind these amazing pieces of work, but Maggie O’Farrell’s book asks: Who was the family behind him? Anne, or Agnes, Hathaway has had a pretty bad press, and this redresses some of those injustices.”
Whyman had a “hunch”the RSC ought to put it on stage the minute she’d finished reading it because it dealt “so beautifully with bereavement and love.”
That love, Whyman observed, “carried Shakespeare to some of the most remarkable achievements of his life, notably writing Hamlet.”
Liza Marshall’s Hera Pictures already had acquired an option, and the movie’s in development with Neal Street Productions, founded by Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris and Caro Newling, and Amblin Partners. Chiara Atik is writing the screenplay.

However, O’Farrell and Neal Street had a keenness for it to be staged in Stratford, so agreements were struck with the RSC for Neal Street, in association with Hera Pictures, to allow a theater version that would be separate from the movie. Amblin has been supporting the stage adaptation enthusiastically.
O’Farrell has been giving “hands-on” attention to both the screenplay and the stage play, Newling said.
Newling admitted that “it’s unusual” to “shout about” transferring before you’ve opened, but “there was this tsunami of interest, and we were never going to satisfy the extraordinary level of interest during the run at the Swan alone. There is such demand for this title,” she added.
Maggie O’Farrell. Courtesy RSC.
The play’s a terrific opportunity for Mantock, who made her debut in a recent revival of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit directed by Richard Eyre.
Whyman, Chakrabarti and Newling all spoke of their excitement in finding Mantock, heaping casting director Amy Ball with praise.
“It’s simple,” said Whyman “She has got really old-fashioned star quality but at the same time has got her feet firmly on the ground. Agnes is a hard-working, fearless woman who knows her own mind, and so does Madeleine.”
For the Nottinghamshire-born Mantock, Agnes is a “giant role” for her. “It does feel like the role of a lifetime. I don’t know if I’ll get this opportunity again, so I’m very grateful.”
The cast got to meet O’Farrell during rehearsals, and Mantock remembers the novelist telling the company “that ‘not every person in history is remembered kindly and sometimes they are misremembered,’ and I think we all felt lucky to have a responsibility to look at how we might choose to see Anne Hathaway this time.”
Mantock said that “there’s a lot of pain and loss and grief, but there’s also the love, the joy and the hope. And you have to feel all of those things … that’s what life is.”
She noted the advantages of having Chakrabarti at rehearsals, plus, if needs be, “if we get a bit stumped and we don’t know which way to go with something, we can go to the book. We’ve got this amazing resource.”
So first the Swan Theatre, followed by a season at the Garrick in the West End. The phenomenon of Hamnet is unlikely to end there.
There’s Broadway and beyond.

The cast also includes Tom Vary as William and Sarah Belcher, Will Brown, Haydn Burke, Ajani Cabey, Faye Campbell, Frankie Hastings, Karl Haynes, Alex Jarrett, Hannah McPake, Elizabeth Rider, Rose Riley, Harmony Rose-Bremner, Obioma Ugoala and Peter Wight.

Say bonjour to Norman Reedus’ co-stars on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. AMC on Friday shared that five more actors had been added to the cast of the France-set spinoff.
Joining Reedus and the previously announced Clémence Poésy in battling beret-wearing zombies are relative newcomers Anne Charrier (The Last Deadly Mission) as Genet, Eriq Ebanouey (Fox Hunt) as Fallou, Laika Blanc Francard (My Night) as Sylvie, Romain Levi (The Tunnel) as Codron and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi as Laurent. Not joining them, as was the original plan, is Melissa McBride, who played Daryl’s ride-or-die Carol on The Walking Dead throughout the series’ entire 11-season run.

Halloween Horror Nights time is finally here! The haunt, on both the East and West coasts at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, is among the most popular in the world. We here at /Film know a thing or two about this annual event, but we also know that attending it could be a bit of a hassle. There's a lot of travel, planning, and strategizing that needs to happen in order for an Hhn trip to come to fruition. Unless you're local to either Los Angeles or Orlando, it's not something you can just go to on a whim.
That's why we've created this handy streaming guide. Some of the movies here will be featured at either the Hollywood or Orlando events, while others are more similar to houses based on vibes and themes. No matter what, though, this guide will surely include something that will fill the Hhn-sized hole in your heart.

Anne Hathaway is all set as the star of Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming reboot of the Roald Dahl classic book and remake of 1990’s The Witches. All the fans of the original movie and book have been wondering how this new movie would take on the story, as some remakes go for an updated shot for shot, and others change up everything and give fans a surprise.
In a recent interview with Variety, Hathaway was asked how the new film would be similar to the first one, and she frankly said, "I think the stories will be the only thing that is familiar. I think everything else is totally from the mind of Robert Zemeckis and I'm really excited."
That sounds exciting! Here’s a quick synopsis for the film:

Octavia Spencer will join Anne Hathaway in Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches.
The book, which was previously adapted by the studio into a 1990 film starring Anjelica Huston, follows a boy who stumbles upon a coven of child-hating witches he must stop — even though he has been turned into a mouse.
Black-ish creator Kenya Barris will co-write the script with Zemeckis, with an earlier draft coming from Guillermo del Toro.
Zemeckis took over directorial duties from del Toro, who had long been attached to helm the project but will now produce alongside fellow Oscar winner Alfonso ...

“American Horror Story” fans eagerly anticipating Jessica Lange, Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott’s return to the franchise next week are about to be granted the gift of a little more time with the series alums, as the installment is going to run longer than any other “Apocalypse” episode we’ve seen so far.
Next Wednesday’s “Ahs: Apocalypse,” titled “Return to Murder House,” will be a 1 hour and 18 minute broadcast, a spokesperson for FX told TheWrap, with 55 minutes and 1 second of that being the actual runtime of the show.
For reference, the typical length of an “Ahs” episode in the more recent seasons has been between 40-42 minutes, excluding commercials. So that is a pretty good chunk of extra time there. And this should be Stevie Nicks music to “Ahs” fans’ ears, as next week’s “Apocalypse” is expected to finally fully deliver on the Ryan Murphy series’ promise...

For a season whose hype was built almost exclusively on the fact that it’s a crossover between Murder House (Season 1) and Coven (Season 3), the first episode of American Horror Story: Apocalypse (“The End”) offered nothing familiar. Sure, we met a grown-up Michael Langdon, the baby antichrist from Murder House, but the character is […]

There are no shortage of programs on television that satirize the current state of our country and our politics. But while most will have good quips about what’s happening or a half-assed impression of the president, most don’t show characters actually dealing with where the country is as part of their lives. Thankfully, “Broad City” has stepped up to the plate and filled that spot with immense hilarity. Emmy voters should take note of this show, as it offers the perfect rebuttal to Donald Trump‘s vision of America, and seriously put it in contention to be nominated for Best Comedy Series.
The idea of a show about two Jewish 20-something women in New York may not seem political on its face, but creators and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson have molded those characteristics into the people they portray. By the end of the third season, which...

This story about “Broad City” first appeared in the Comedy/Drama/Actors issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Comedy Central’s “Broad City” is so aspirational in its narrative about two twentysomething New Yorkers, it’s hard to think of the series as anything but a bunch of beginnings. Still, creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are packing up their starter apartments, dismantling bongs, deleting Tinder accounts and heading into adulthood.
The upcoming fifth season will be their last, and it will not shy from emotion as it continues to deliver smart and absurdist comedy.
“I feel like we always try to write the funniest [story], but heading toward the ending is going to be pretty heavy, and everyone is going to know it when the season starts,” Glazer said. “There’s a lot of growth in the upcoming season.”

Betty Dodson has made a career out of teaching women to masturbate, but she’s only one woman. “You first have to be self-sexual, and then you can have sex with other people,” Dodson said recently, summarizing a life philosophy that has crowned her the grand dame of radical sex positivity. “The love affair — the sex affair — that we have with ourselves is the primary one. It should be ongoing throughout our life, and we should honor it.”
Dodson’s ideas reached a wider audience last fall, when “Broad City” sent Ilana to a sex therapist named Betty in search of her lost orgasm. (The culprit: Donald Trump.) Titled “Witches,” the episode spawned countless think pieces and was a standout in a series that has promoted sex positivity from the beginning. But “Broad City” is a comedy, and while its impact is vast, it is largely felt by a self-selecting...
