It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later. During Wednesday’s episode of “Chicago Fire,” Taylor Kinney’s Kelly Severide left town to go to “the best arson investigation training program in the world.” While he could have turned down the last-minute opening, the opportunity was too big to pass on.

‘Chicago P.D.’: Dick Wolf Told 2 Cast Members ‘I Can Kill You at Anytime’ at the 1st Dinner They Had
Chicago P.D. began as a spinoff of Chicago Fire. But while the two NBC shows have crossed over time and again, they remain individual fan favorites in their own right.
Together these two, along with Chicago Med and the short-lived Chicago Justice, are part of the network’s Chicago franchise. But even big fans might be shocked by this bit of behind-the-scenes trivia regarding co-creator Dick Wolf.
NBC’s ‘Chicago’ franchise has featured some tragic deaths
Given the dangerous nature of the titular professions, fans should enter the Chicago shows expecting the occasional character death. The series shows have definitely delivered on that front.
Chicago P.D. in particular perhaps features the greatest likelihood of bloodshed as Detective Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and his Intelligence Unit put themselves in harm’s way to do their duty. Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas), a key part of the show’s first five seasons,...

Kelly Severide is taking a temporary leave of absence from Firehouse 51.
Deadline reported Friday afternoon that Taylor Kinney is taking a break from Chicago Fire.
The outlet says the actor is dealing with a personal matter.
Future scripts will likely need to be rewritten to accommodate the beloved actor's absence.
It's unclear at this stage how the actor's absence will be handled on-screen, especially if scripts are being rewritten.
Kinney has been with Chicago Fire since it premiered in 2012 and has appeared in spinoffs Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Justice.
If you watch Chicago Fire online, you know Severide has been front and center on Chicago Fire Season 11, so losing Severide -- even for a short time -- will have a significant impact on the show.
The series has been delving into Severide's relationship with Kidd and how they are navigating life as a married couple.

Taylor Kinney, who portrays Kelly Severide on “Chicago Fire,” is stepping away from the NBC drama. A source close to production confirms to Variety that the actor is on a leave of absence to deal with a personal matter.
Kinney has led the Dick Wolf series since its debut in 2012. In addition to the firefighter series, he has appeared on all of the spinoffs, including “Chicago Med,” “Chicago P.D.” and the short-lived “Chicago Justice.”
The “One Chicago” world has seen many changes over the last few years — specifically on “Chicago Fire.” Jesse Spencer exited the show in 2021 after 200 episodes, but returned briefly for a cameo in the Season 10 finale, which saw Kinney’s Severide marry Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo).
Co-creator Derek Haas, who has served as showrunner for all 11 seasons of “Chicago Fire” and on CBS’ “FBI: International,” is leaving Wolf Entertainment at the end of Season 11.

None of NBC's shows are performing terribly during the 2022-23 TV season.
That can change as we head into early 2023.
There have been reports that NBC is mulling handing its 10 p.m. slot back to affiliates, meaning there could be fewer shows on the network overall next season.
If this is the case, newer entries like Quantum Leap and La Brea would get the chop.
It could also lead to the demise of one of the Chicago shows. Does anyone remember Chicago Justice?
Scroll down to find out how every show is holding up.
1. Chicago Fire - Certain Renewal Chicago Fire is averaging 7 million viewers and a 0.69 rating in the demo. The series soars with delayed viewing, so there's no way NBC would part ways with it any time soon. It's safe. 2. Chicago Med - Certain Renewal Chicago Med is averaging 6.7 million viewers and a 0.64 rating in the demo.

Procedurals are seemingly taking over television, and for a good reason.
There are plenty of shows out there that depict the lives of everyday heroes and have lasted for years. One franchise that won't stop is NBC's One Chicago, including the current series Chicago Fire, Chicago Pd, Chicago Med, and Chicago Justice.
Thanks to streaming, more and more people are getting introduced to Firehouse 51, the 21st District, and the Chicago Med staff.
As someone who just recently started watching the franchise, which has been on since 2012, trying to figure out how to watch the series without any spoilers has been pretty hard, but it's also been manageable.
For the most part, the Chicago shows are easy to watch on their own, despite the crossovers that do happen and the reoccurrence of regular guest appearances.
To help with One Chicago first-timers, we are including everything there is to know about the franchise,...

Believe it or not, it’s been over a decade since NBC’s flagship crime drama Law & Order went off the air.
It doesn’t feel quite so long though because, despite spending 11-plus years away, Law & Order never really went anywhere. Reruns air constantly across basic cable, with syndication positively loving the show’s “drop into any episode at any time” quality. The franchise itself lived on in the form of spinoff Law & Order: Svu, which actually passed the original in season-count. Law & Order creator Dick Wolf even continued his network primetime dominance with his suite of L&o-style “Chicago” shows for NBC and FBI for CBS.
Still, even with Law & Order’s influence so keenly felt on television, there’s nothing quite like the original. Thankfully, Wolf and NBC agreed and are set to bring the TV classic back for season 21 on Feb.

Exclusive: Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) has been cast as the co-lead alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in a global spy adventure series, which is in the works at Skydance Television.
Created by Nick Santora, the series has a father (Schwarzenegger) and daughter (Barbaro) at the center of the story.
Barbaro was approached for the series on the heels of her starring turn as Phoenix, the sole female fighter pilot, in the upcoming Top Gun sequel, which Skydance co-produces with Paramount. It is slated for a theatrical release in July 2021.
Schwarzenegger’s involvement in the show also stems from his existing relationship with Skydance on the feature side, having starred in Terminator Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate for the studio.
Santora is developing and executive producing the untitled series as part of his overall deal with Skydance Television. He also serves as executive producer/showrunner of the studio’s upcoming Jack Reacher drama for Amazon.

If Chicago Med made you do a double-take on Wednesday, that’s perfectly understandable. The episode featured a guest spot from Chicago Justice vet Joelle Carter, who starred as private investigator Laura Nagel on the short-lived spinoff. But on this week’s Med, Carter played a completely different character: a former patient of Will’s who became a drug addict after he prescribed her opioids.
Co-showrunner Andrew Schneider credits director/executive producer Michael Pressman with bringing Carter back into the #OneChicago universe in a very different way. “[He] had worked extensively with her on Justified and thought she would be great for this,...
