It may feel like throuples are a distinctly modern romantic arrangement – but this couldn’t be further from the case.
In fact, consensual non-monogamy, such as a ménage à trois, goes back centuries. It can even be found in the bible.
Recently, David Haye has been the subject of speculation surrounding his private life, with fans claiming that the ex-boxer is in a three-way relationship with model Sian Osborne and The Saturdays singer Una Healy.
On Valentine’s Day, Haye appeared to confirm the rumours, with Healy also sharing a coy message on Instagram alluding to the relationship.
When it comes to depictions of polyamorous relationships in film and TV, good examples have traditionally been few and far between.
But that’s not to say there haven’t been any – from pre-code classics to modern indie dramas, there are plenty of films and TV series which place the spotlight on...

Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Foy and a cast of cats make an irresistible combination in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. Director Will Sharpe (Flowers) makes witty, poignant work of the story of English painter Wain, who specialized in exaggerated cartoons of wide-eyed felines from the late 1800s.
We first meet Louis (Cumberbatch) when he’s sketching animals at farm shows, selling pictures to support his mother and five sisters in Victorian London. His fortunes change in several respects when Sir William Ingram (Toby Jones), the editor of the Illustrated London News offers him a position as illustrator — and when he meets his sisters’ new governess, Emily Richardson. While Emily is played by Cumberbatch’s junior, Foy, it’s interesting to note that in real life Emily was 10 years older than 23-year-old Louis, which was considered quite outrageous at the time. The Justice League Dark has conjured its next member.
A series dedicated to “Madame Xanadu,” the DC Comics title about an immortal sorceress who dates back to the time of King Arthur, is in development for HBO Max with Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television.
Filmmaker Angela Robinson is writing the one-hour drama series and, should it get greenlit, will executive produce along with J.J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson. Rachel Rusch Rich will co-executive produce.
HBO Max declined to comment.
Robinson has a busy plate. She signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group in March; she’s working with cartoonist and author Terry Moore on adapting his LGBTQ graphic novel “Strangers in Paradise” as a feature film; and she’s directing a remake of the 1983 cult classic “The Hunger” for Warner Bros.

Art, love, jealousy and freedom are themes at the heart of Tove, the biopic of Swedish-Finnish Moomins creator Tove Jansson (Alma Pöysti). Her drawings of the hippo-like Moomintrolls became world famous, graduating from books and comic strips to theater, TV series, movies and even a theme park. But the Tove we meet in 1944 Helsinki is struggling to pay the rent with her paintings, little knowing that her fortune will be made by the cartoons her sculptor father mocks.
Written by Eeva Putro and directed by Zaida Bergroth, and releasing domestically via Juno Films on June 3 and in the UK on July 9 through Blue Finch Film, the story explores evolving definitions of art through this father-daughter tension. But its deeper focus is on Tove Jansson as a person, and the fascinating milieu in which she lives.
This is liberal, post-war Helsinki, where artists mingle with politicians at illegal parties, sipping cocktails and swapping partners.

Cinematographer Bryce Fortner says he was not tempted to use period lenses when shooting “I’m Your Woman,” despite it being set in 1975. He explained his equipment choices for this Amazon Prime feature during Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts panel conducted virtually by this writer (watch above). “We thought about using lenses from that era but it was important to the director, Julia Hart, that it didn’t feel like a museum film. We wanted it to be something where the audience was experiencing what was happening as opposed to looking back on a moment in time.”

Professor Marston And The Wonder Women is based on the bold and illuminating true superhero origin story depicting the creation of the beloved comic book character ‘Wonder Woman’ in 1941 by Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), the Harvard psychologist who helped invent the modern lie detector test. Marston’s polyamorous relationship with wife Elizabeth Holloway (Rebecca Hall) and their lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) was key to the creation of Wonder Woman as their feminist ideals were ingrained in the character from her creation. Written and Directed by Angela Robinson (“True Blood”), Professor Marston And The Wonder Women...

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future. This week, we look back on a monumental year, for better or worse.
Ask enough women in Hollywood about being a woman in Hollywood, and eventually a theme emerges: conversation is great, and the acknowledgement of the skewed numbers and lack of equality is essential. It’s a discussion that needs to happen, but won’t it be great when we can stop just talking and put words into action?
It’s a two-pronged dream — that conversation will move past chatter and produce real results, and that those results will create a world where inequality becomes a thing of the past.
But talking has a way of being one-sided and, as it turns out, there needed to be one more step in between the chatter and actually moving things forward. That finally happened in 2017, the year people stopped talking,...

Raise your hand if you're a Rebecca Hall fan! I feel as if I can see a virtual sea of hands waving in front of me, as well I should in a post-Christine world where she's shown us just exactly how much she's capable of putting on-screen. If only more awards bodies had taken notice last year... or this year too, actually, where she turned in another very fine piece of work in Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Shame she's getting over-looked, but lucky for us she's not going anywhere.
Next year's she re-teaming with the man who gave her her big break in the movies (that would be Woody Allen, so I hope she's got her talking points in order) but before that she's got Permission coming out, a romantic drama about longtime partners opening up their relationship that co-stars Dan Stevens...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the most overlooked and/or underrated movie of 2017?
E. Oliver Whitney, Screencrush.com, @cinemabite
Despite the critical praise, “A Fantastic Woman” only a one-week qualifying run last month, and I worry is it’ll easily be forgotten this awards season. Daniela Vega gives one of the most astounding performances I’ve seen this year, one that comes from somewhere fierce and internal, portraying the life and struggle of a trans woman that cinema has rarely shown an interest in exploring. But since you can’t see it until it has a proper release in Febraury, do check one of the year’s other...

This year has been a very important year for Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins’ sensational and critically acclaimed Wonder Woman broke box office records for a female directed picture and has got the ball rolling for future comic book movies led by female characters. As well as this the Dceu’s other big release this year Justice League (in cinemas now) has also, according to some, been carried by the character’s appearance and many are in fact saying that Wonder Woman has become the saviour of the Dceu. However, outside of this page to screen world of franchise building, this thoroughly interesting Bio-Drama looks at the man and women behind the super heroine and gives us all a very different take on the material.

Non-monogamous relationships used to be portrayed as disastrous in film. But with Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, is there a shift towards greater acceptance?
Last week, a very different period drama hit cinemas. Professor Marston and the Wonder Women concerns a real-life love story between a professor and his academic wife – and their teaching student, Olive. From the late 1920s onwards, they begin sharing a workplace, a bed, a home and eventually a family.

The story of Wonder Woman's creator comes to the screen. Here's our review of Professor Marston And The Wonder Women...
Hot on the heels on Patty Jenkins’ box office smashing Wonder Woman comes the biopic of Wonder Woman’s creator, William Moulton Marston and the two women who inspired him to create the comic book hero.
The central story follows Marston and his wife’s unconventional relationship with Olive Byrne. Byrne started as a teaching assistant for the Marstons and became the third person in their marriage. The film explores the themes that became key in the Wonder Woman comics - empowered women, truth and the trio’s penchant for a bit of bondage.
Rebecca Hall is incredibly watchable as Elizabeth Holloway Marston, Luke Evans (who was very generously cast, just wait for the pictures at the end) is a bit dull, Bella Heathcote looks distractingly like Heather Graham...

As we gear up for an awards season ripe with many quality queer films, it’s important to remember smaller successes who may get lost in the shuffle. Lgbt-themed film festivals Outfest and Frameline kicked off the summer, while New York’s own NewFest wrapped up last week. It’s always thrilling to see a gay film get awards attention, like the kind lavished on Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” and foreign language contender “Bpm (Beats Per Minute).” But it’s been a banner year for nuanced queer films across the board, and especially ones from queer-identified filmmakers.
From up-and-comers making splashy debuts, to longtime favorites who have stepped up their game, the filmmakers on this list represent a varied swath of not only the Lgbt spectrum, but vastly different artistic styles. That means they have the potential to reach different audiences — and open up perspectives across demographics.

A clip from Professor Marston and the Wonder Women has arrived. It sees Dr William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) pitching his idea for a female comic book hero to his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) and mutual lover Olive (Bella Heathcote). Needless to say, they don’t seem very impressed.
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women tells the incredible true story of what inspired Harvard psychologist and inventor Dr Marston to create the iconic superhero Wonder Woman. The self-empowered women in his life, wife Elizabeth and mutual lover Olive, who defied social conventions.

Hooray. SquareSpace has fixed their Twitter problem so now tweets can be displayed properly again. Essentially we like doing these roundups for two reasons. One, it's easy to miss good stuff on twitter in the presence of an endless stream of stuff. Two, some of you don't use twitter and are probably more sane for it but you shouldn't be denied seeing amusing, insightful, or otherwise shareable brief thoughts on topics both deafening and underdiscussed.

If you haven't heard the true story about the creators of Wonder Woman, chances are you won't believe it.
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women lands in theatres in perfect timing, just after Wonder Woman itself became the biggest phenomenon of the year. The film, directed by Angela Robinson, tells the story of William Moulton Marston, the man who gave us our first woman superhero. You may not know that Marston was a psychologist and the inventor of the lie detector, or that in the 1930s, he was living in a polyamorous relationship with two equally brilliant women, his wife Elizabeth, and their lover Olive.

Christie Marston is the granddaughter of Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston and Elizabeth Holloway Marston, who are portrayed in the new film Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. It's been established that William had a relationship with both his wife Elizabeth and Olive Byrne, who lived with them. But the film depicts Elizabeth Marston and Byrne, who continued to live together after William Moulton Marston's death, as also having had a sexual relationship, something others have also said there is evidence for, but which the creator's granddaughter takes issue with. (You can read writer/director Angela Robinson's thoughts on crafting the...

And once more we dive into the overflowing sea of films “inspired by true events”, though it has a touch of the “biopic”. Much as with the recent Mark Felt and Thurgood Marshall movies, it doesn’t offer a “cradle to grave” overview of the person’s life. But it certainly covers a bigger “chunk” than those flicks, going from the first World War to the second. Plus, it can considered an “origin” story of a favorite popular culture icon as with last weekend’s Professor Marston And The Wonder Women (still miffed that it wasn’t shown to the press), and like the princess, one that’s still very favored by the younger set, starring in a still steady stream of feature films (though most go straight to home video). This is the saga of author A.A. Milne whose son inspired him to write the tale of Winnie the Pooh...

'Professor Marston and the Wonder Women' Director on the Superhero's Kinky Origin Story (Exclusive)
If you saw Wonder Woman this summer -- and the record-setting $800 million worldwide box office indicates a lot of people saw Wonder Woman this summer -- then you know the story of how Diana, Princess of Themyscira, became the superhero Wonder Woman, protector of mankind. How Wonder Woman ended up on the pages of comic books in the first place is a story unto itself however, told in Professor Marston and the Wonder Women: In 1941, Dr. William Moulton Marston (played by Luke Evans), his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), created the character to save the world...through psychology. Director Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.) could never have predicted, though, that her Wonder Woman indie would arrive in theaters mere months after one of the biggest movies of the year.
"I'm getting a lot of credit for having the foresight to know that in the summer of 2017, the 75-years-in-the-making, long-gestating Wonder Woman movie would...

Universal and Blumhouse score yet again, this time with Happy Death Day. The horror film easily topped the weekend box office, adding to the production house's impressive stable of original horror films including the likes of The Visit, Split and Get Out. At the same time, Blade Runner 2049 dropped over 50% in its second weekend, Stx's The Foreigner topped Mojo's weekend forecast, Open Road's Marshall delivered on expectations and Annapurna's Professor Marston and the Wonder Women crashed and burned. With an estimated $26.5 million, Happy Death Day topped the weekend box office, outperforming the opening weekend for The Visit, which went on to gross $65.2 million in 2015. Based on averages for Blumhouse titles debuting over $20 million, it seems reasonable to expect Happy Death Day to also push toward a $60 million run domestically, especially with Halloween still around the corner. The film scored a "B" CinemaScore from opening day audiences which broke down 54% female vs.

It's been a good year for Blumhouse Productions so far with Get Out and Split delivering impressive returns on minuscule budgets. This weekend their latest, Happy Death Day, hopes to follow suit as it targets a #1 finish, pushing WB's Blade Runner 2049 into runner-up position after just one week in theaters. Additional new releases include Stx's The Foreigner, Annapurna's Professor Marston & the Wonder Women and Open Road's Marshall as there's a little something for everyone in theaters, though it doesn't appear that little something will deliver big numbers at the box office collectively. On the heels of a very strong year so far, Blumhouse brings Happy Death Day to 3,149 theaters nationwide. The film takes the Groundhog Day concept and turns it into a horror film with Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones director, Christopher Landon, at the helm. Industry expectations are for a debut in the mid-teens, though we're anticipating a result just a bit higher.

“Wonder Woman” might be the year’s most outwardly feminist blockbuster, but another of this year’s most outwardly feminist biopic chronicles her creation. Kinky and conventional in equal measure, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” follows the unlikely (and mostly true) creation of Wonder Woman, born out of both forward-thinking theory and a polyamorous relationship that endured for decades. Robinson’s film follows Professor William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their one-time student and eventual lover Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) as they try to navigate a complex three-way relationship while also dealing with intense public scrutiny.
Cleverly packaged as a straightforward drama about personal desires and professional accomplishments, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” is a hugely satisfying alternative to often cheap excuses for feminist movies in Hollywood. If there’s one thing the film doesn’t skimp on, it’s the purposely feminist...

The allegations haven’t stopped against Harvey Weinstein, and neither have the denouncements. In the wake of new reports of alleged sexual abuse and harassment at the hands of the recently fired Weinstein Company head — including stories from actresses like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosanna Arquette, Mira Sorvino, and Asia Argento — yet another one of the producer and distributor’s former stars has spoken out against him and made it clear that she stands with his victims. Moreover, she opened up about her own tricky history with Weinstein, and the pervasive sense that he was someone to avoid as a woman in the industry.

This October, you can definitely get your scare on at the movies.
While It is still dominating the box office and will make for a great Halloween treat, there are even more horror films to look forward to this month. We might even suggest a double bill or a mini-marathon, because October is a month meant to binge on horror.
Not only that, but some awards-contenders and big festival players are also making their way to Cineplex, films like Suburbicon and one of our favourites from Tiff, The Florida Project.
