Chris Hemsworth had his career-defining role in 2011 with the MCU film Thor. Since then, the actor has been in multiple Marvel films, playing the God of Thunder. While the actor has also appeared in films such as Extraction and Snow White and the Huntsman, he became a worldwide star and one of the highest-paid actors with the Thor and Avengers films.
However, the fourth solo film in the franchise, Thor: Love and Thunder was not as well-received as its predecessors. Despite being a commercial success, the film was criticized for its shoddy VFX and writing. Hemsworth has now come out and taken responsibility for the film’s disappointing response.

NBCUniversal announced on Monday that it was raising the price of a Peacock subscription by $2 per month on both of its tiers.
The peacock has always been a sign of extravagant wealth, and NBCUniversal appears to be leaning into that stereotype. As forecast by The Streamable's experts, on Tuesday, NBCU announced that it will be raising the subscription price of its streamer Peacock, and that beginning this summer, both of its two plans will cost $2 per month more than they do now. If that’s a little too much to pay for the relatively smaller content library of Peacock, and you’re thinking about canceling the service before the price hike kicks in, check below for options that will allow you to watch a much larger array of content for the same amount, or even less, each month!
Key Facts: Netflix offers ad-supported streaming for $1 per month less than Peacock’s new price.

It’s been a long time coming, but a remake of the 1994 film The Crow (which was based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr) will finally be making its way out into the world on August 23rd, which is when Lionsgate will be giving the film a theatrical release. With that release date swiftly approaching, we figured we should gather together all the information we have on this movie… and here it is, Everything We Know About The Crow Remake:
Development Hell
When the original The Crow was released, it was successful enough to spawn a franchise, with three sequels following over the next eleven years. We got The Crow: City of Angels in 1996, The Crow: Salvation in 2000, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer in 2005, with several other potential sequels (including one that would have been written and directed by Rob Zombie) being developed and scrapped along the way.

Disney’s live-action “Snow White” film has been the center of several controversies since it was announced. There was backlash when Disney announced that they were not hiring actors with dwarfism and were instead making the seven dwarfs “magical creatures.” To the set catching on fire. To even the Snow White actress Rachel Zegler’s comments about the story’s direction for modern audiences.
“I just mean that it’s no longer 1937. She’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s going to be dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”
The SAG-AFTRA strike and likely issues with the film have delayed the release by a year, from March 22, 2024, to March 21, 2025.
Now, it seems that an insider is saying the issues are far worse than everyone thought. Of course, this is a rumor, and we have no confirmation on anything that is said.

Harvard’s South Asian Person of The Year, Avantika Vandanapu, has been in the news lately and, surprisingly, not on a positive note. The Mean Girls star has been facing major backlash after rumor mills churned out news of her screen testing for the role of Rapunzel opposite Milo Manheim in the Disney live-action remake of the movie Tangled. We witnessed a similar uproar in 2023 over the casting of Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid live-action remake and, more recently, Rachel Ziegler’s casting in the Snow White live-action. Vandanapu is being subject to racist trolling in her Instagram comments section,

While fans of other shows might be thrilled with the news of a reboot, this isn’t the first reboot Heroes fans have had to get excited and disappointed about. In 2015, a continuation of this beloved series titled Heroes Reborn was released 2015 but didn’t garner as much love from fans. The reboot treatment is all the rage in Hollywood at the moment. Out this week in theaters is Radio Silence’s Abigail, a heist-turned-bloodbath when kidnappers realize the child ballerina they’ve snatched isn’t quite human. That the petite vampire is a ballerina feels apt. After all, the deceptive art form has a reputation for dainty elegance that belies the sheer grueling dedication of its performers, both physically and mentally.
Ballet requires a high level of dedication to practice and performance and frequently spills over into body horror through broken toenails, stress fractures, and overuse injuries. In other words, ballet is often a mix of pain and beauty, which means it pairs well with horror.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to ballerinas in horror.
These horror movies feature at least one ballerina tormented by her art form, highlighting the stark, beguiling contrast between beauty and horror. Here’s where you can stream them now.

We’re leaving Las Vegas.
CinemaCon 2024 is over — time for studios to go out and prove their pitches at the box office. Based on what we saw, or really what we didn’t see, that will be an uphill battle.
First, let’s take a moment to appreciate the folks and films that showed up. Arguably, the biggest star to attend CinemaCon was Kevin Costner. The cynical point of view? He was pitching not one but two “Horizon” films to theater owners — and simultaneously pitching third and fourth installments to Warner Bros. Plus, Costner received a trophy (the CinemaCon Visionary Award), for which WB execs shooed him offstage just to call him back up. Kinda silly. Speaking of WB execs and no-shows, if David Zaslav was in town, he didn’t come on stage.
Jeff Goldblum did, as did his fellow “Wicked” co-stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Yeoh.

Disney has announced a slew of changes to its upcoming release calendar, firming up the studio's theatrical slate for 2025 and 2026. Let's go over what we can expect.
First up, "The Mandalorian & Grogu" is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. This had previously been listed as an untitled "Star Wars" movie. Now, we know it's Jon Favreau's movie, which will take the world of "The Mandalorian" from Disney+ to the silver screen. After the Disney annual shareholder meeting, Bob Iger went on a victory tour with some interviews. During the Q&a and proposal segments of the shareholder meeting, the same message came up a couple of times about Disney’s political leanings and messaging choices in entertainment. Then, on CNBC, an interview question about Disney being “woke” was brought up.
Here’s how Bob Iger responded:
..the term woke is thrown around rather liberally, no pun intended in that regard. I think a lot of people don’t even understand really what it means.”
According to Merriam-Webster, the term “woke” means to be “aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)”
Dictionary.com defines “woke” as “having or marked by an active awareness of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those involving the treatment of ethnic, racial, or sexual minorities.”

It has been a fun and exciting day for rumor lovers and fans of Sydney Sweeney, as a rumor broke out and was then refuted by the actress’ representatives. Namely, earlier today, casting information revealed that popular young actress Sydney Sweeney would be playing the main role in the upcoming supernatural thriller Day Drinker directed by Marc Webb, alongside Johnny Depp, one of the more controversial names in Hollywood today. But, it seems, this was a wrong piece of information, as Sweeney and her representatives denied the claim, causing a bit of a scandal.
We don’t really know much about the whole project, aside from what the early rumors have told us. The 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man director signed on to direct Day Drinker back in 2022. Depp has been confirmed to star in the movie, with Zach Dean writing the script.

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

Every Angeleno knows — and every tourist finds out — that spending time in Hollywood does not translate into hobnobbing with celebrities. For the three weeks of my contract job at the Tcl Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, friends and family asked if I had seen any celebrities. Every time, the answer was no.
As my time in Hollywood drew to a close, I knew I had one last shot. The day before I left for home, the Academy Awards would be held at the Dolby Theatre, mere steps away from the Chinese Theatre and my Airbnb. All of Hollywood’s biggest stars would be on the red carpet. I couldn’t lose.

It isn’t every week that two of the biggest jobs in film are filled within a matter of days, but that was the case last week. On February 26, Disney’s live-action president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production Sean Bailey exited, making way for Searchlight’s David Greenbaum to take the top job. Two days later on Feb. 28, Rideback’s Dan Lin was tapped to take Scott Stuber’s open seat atop Netflix’s film division.
Greenbaum made his bones on prestige indie films and original, auteur-driven stories. He’s now taking the job at a company that has spent the last 15 years mining IP and playing the hits. Lin is a franchise builder now stepping into an environment known for chasing big prestige swings.

Disney can’t seem to catch a break as filmmaker Sarah Polley exits from the upcoming Disney remake – Bambi. Sarah Polley, who is known for her thought-stirring work like Women Talking, has recently decided to step away from the upcoming live-action remake for creative reasons.
Sarah Polley is not the only one to walk off the sets of Bambi; screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer also reportedly left the project last year. Disney’s trouble with live-action remakes is not a new issue; the last release, The Little Mermaid, faced backlash from fans, and the upcoming Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remake generated negative reactions before release.

Popularly known for portraying Pennywise in the horror film franchise It, Bill Skarsgård is set to star in the remake of the 1994 supernatural superhero film The Crow. Directed by Alex Proyas, the original film featured Brandon Lee in the lead role of Eric Draven. Following its success several other actors have since portrayed different versions of The Crow in subsequent sequels. The crossover you didn’t know you needed, The Asylum’s Snow White and the Seven Samurai combines a beloved fairytale and an epic classic in a new action movie now available digitally. So move over, Rachel Zegler, before you get disemboweled by a katana!
Here is the official plot of Snow White and the Seven Samurai: “Left for dead by her rich and powerful stepmother, Snow White is taken in by a team of assassins – The Seven Samurai, who train her in their ways of fighting. As her stepmother becomes more and more powerful, Snow White and the samurai take up arms to topple her once and for all.”
The trailer asks, “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who kicks the most ass of them all?” That may not be Snow White but rather Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, whose name and face get the most space on the movie’s poster.

Executive turnover dialed up the palace intrigue in the Magic Kingdom this week.
Walt Disney Studios announced on Monday that 15-year veteran Sean Bailey would step down as president of its motion picture production group – a job in which he oversaw splashy live-action remakes of beloved animated properties. In his place, Searchlight Pictures co-head David Greenbaum was elevated and will report directly to top film boss Alan Bergman.
A creative shuffle amongst senior Disney film executives was always going to happen, many industry insiders who spoke with Variety said. As Disney CEO Bob Iger continues to aggressively cut costs amid a nasty proxy battle with billionaire investor Nelson Peltz – and the company’s movies suffer from an uncharacteristic box office slump and creative torpor – many saw a move like Bailey’s as inevitable.
“Disney film needs a shot in the arm, clearly,” said one top agent speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The Animated World is a regular feature spotlighting animation from around the globe. The Boy and the Heron.“And what about you? What will you create? You take many things from the world, but I wonder what you will give back in return?”—Genzaburo Yoshino, How Do You Live? Part of the genius of Hayao Miyazaki is his ability to captivate his audience so deeply with his films that they don’t realize he is asking an essential question: how do you live? Yet, his films do. Each of them demands that we think, reflect, and change. Visually, they burst like a star in our mind’s eye while the stories slowly lead us toward realization. They warm our hearts while showing us how complex and contradictory people are—by turns selfish and selfless. Canadian movie theaters closed 2023 with their highest ticket sales since the start of the pandemic.
The Movie Theatre Association of Canada reports overall Canadian box office revenue rose to $897.7 million last year, up 34 percent from $674 million in 2022 amid a continuing Hollywood box office recovery.
But last year’s performance was still short of the $1.02 billion dollar mark reached by Canadian cinema operators in 2019, before the pandemic. Movie ticket revenue north of the border during the preceding decade moved in a $950 million to just over $1 billion range.
For 2023, credit the Barbenheimer phenomenon, with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, helping local exhibition giant Cineplex break summer box office records.

2023 was supposed to be an excellent year for movies. Now that people were no longer reluctant to return to the theatres due to Covid, the year was expected to be peppered with blockbusters, making this one of the highest-grossing years in memory. After all, there were Marvel movies, DC movies, new stars, and a pipeline of film that didn’t seem like it would dry up soon.
Of course, things ended up a little different, with Hollywood brought to a standstill by strikes. At the same time, once influential franchises started to wane when pitted against an incredibly weary public hungry for something new. Indeed, it was a pretty dramatic year overall, so here at JoBlo, we’re counting down some of the biggest pop culture stories of the year.

‘Robot Dreams’ Review: Androids Dream of Disco Beats in Pablo Berger’s Sweetly Sorrowful Buddy Movie
Android or artificial intelligence isn’t the enemy in “Robot Dreams,” Pablo Berger’s gently whimsical fantasy of a loner finding manufactured friendship in a scuzzy vision of 1980s New York City. Indeed, one takeaway from this portrait of a shabby-happy Big Apple populated solely with anthropomorphic animals and surprisingly sensitive automatons is that the world might be a better place without humans in it. Like “Blancanieves,” his silent, flamenco-styled spin on Snow White, Berger’s fourth feature dispenses with dialogue in favor of cheerfully expressive, faux-naive visual storytelling. In all other respects, however, “Robot Dreams” is a significant left turn for the Spanish writer-director, beginning with an entirely fresh medium for him: simple, sharp-lined 2D animation in the manner of a pastel-softened “BoJack Horseman.”
Both the film’s aesthetic and its wordless approach, however, are rooted in American author and illustrator Sara Varon’s 2007 graphic novel of the same name.

The sound of music was back with us this week in the form of two polar opposite productions that may intrigue audiences but challenge marketers.
Maestro started streaming on Netflix after auditioning in a (very) few select theaters. Will its narcissistic protagonist, Leonard Bernstein, prove bigger than life on theater screens but too big for the tube?
Wonka, by contrast, is a study in promotional ubiquity, fragments popping up on everything from TBS to the Food Network. Its campaign reflects the determination of Warner Bros Discovery, like Netflix, to overcome the genre funk (think West Side Story or Dear Evan Hansen).
Hovering in the background are the bakeoffs, recaps and revisits fostered by an Academy eager to get out the vote for international candidates, fulfilling its global scenario.
Gil Cates, the colorful impresario who presided over 14 Oscar shows and rescued the genre from the Snow White debacle, would likely have been delighted by Barbenheimer.

Don’t be surprised if top Hollywood studio executives and theater owners aren’t feeling the Christmas spirit this year. They’re bracing for a tumultuous 2024 ride at the domestic box office after a slew of high-profile tentpoles were pushed to 2025 because of the lengthy writers and actors strikes.
In a major blow to the post-pandemic recovery effort, domestic box office revenue in 2024 is now expected to come in behind that of 2023, a reversal of fortunes no one predicted. If projections are right, domestic box office in 2024 could top out at $7.5 billion to $8 billion, compared to an expected $8.8 billion to $8.9 billion this year, say multiple studio executives who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter (a few are more bullish in thinking $8 billion to $8.5 billion is possible).
The culprit: a sparse release calendar, particularly during the first three months of the year. “It’s a disaster,” says one studio exec regarding the first part of the year.

For Disney’s 100th anniversary, writer-ep Jennifer Lee was tasked with creating an original fairytale that celebrated the legacy of Disney animated films. After finding a common theme in wishing upon a star, Wish was born as a way to dissect the power and vulnerability of the concept.
Wish follows Asha (Ariana DeBose), a young girl who disagrees with how the kingdom’s ruler Magnifico (Chris Pine) treats the wishes of her fellow citizens. She wishes upon a star for change, but is surprised when that star comes down from the sky to answer her call. While Star was originally a character with a voice, Lee says the simpler version of Star led to a much more fun character with physical humor.
‘Wish’, from left: Star, Asha (voice: Ariana DeBose), Valentino (voice: Akan Tudyk)
Deadline: How did you arrive at that animation style? It’s very storybook-like.

Rachel Zegler opened up for the first time during a discussion for Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” presented by “Air,” about what it was like working with CGI characters on the set of Disney’s upcoming live-action “Snow White” movie. Zegler is starring as the iconic Disney princess in the film opposite Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. “500 Days of Summer” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” filmmaker Marc Webb directed the movie.
Back in October, Disney released a first-look image from the movie that featured Zegler as Snow White surrounded by the seven dwarves. The image confirmed that CGI was being used to bring the dwarves to life and not human actors, which led to a lot of divisive reactions on social media from Disney fans.

Shortly after Halle Bailey and Rachel Zegler were crowned real-life Disney princesses, they met for the first time at a ball — the 2021 Met Gala, to be exact. It was the beginning not only of a beautiful friendship, but of a new era for Disney. Bailey became the first Black Ariel in Rob Marshall’s live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” based on Disney’s beloved 1989 animated film. Zegler — who used to dress up as Snow White as a little girl — will embody a Latina fairy-tale heroine who befriends seven CGI-created dwarves in 2025’s “Snow White.”
The singer-actors are also showcasing their golden voices in literary adaptations: Bailey, as young Nettie in “The Color Purple”; Zegler, as Lucy Gray Baird in the “Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” Here, Bailey, 23, and Zegler, 22, reflect on their princess experiences and strategies for silencing the social media haters.

With “Wish,” Disney Animation celebrates its 100th anniversary by merging the 2D legacy of watercolor background paintings (dating back to “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”) with cutting-edge CG. The result was a revitalization of the retro aesthetic in every department to better display the hand of the artist. Like a gateway drug, it has already carried over into an as-yet-unannounced feature with a very different 2D look.

Asha (Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old very much in the mold of the modern Disney heroine, desperately wishes upon a star to save her medieval kingdom of Rosas when Sorcerer King Magnifico (Chris Pine) imprisons their wishes. Asha’s plea...

It's been 100 years since Walt Disney created The Walt Disney Company, which first produced short silent films like "Alice's Funnies." That film starred Walt Disney himself, in live-action, showing a little girl how he created his cartoons. The strange and anthropomorphic creations came alive on the screen in front of her in that ambitious early short, and after a day of behind-the-scenes magic, she dreamed herself into the cartoon world.
The events of the next century are much too voluminous to write them all down here but needless to say, Walt Disney's company underwent many changes. Original characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy helped make the studio an industry titan, and feature films like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Cinderella" cemented its box office clout. Disney's theme parks literally changed landscapes. And by the time the 100th anniversary of those original cartoons came around,...

What does it mean to be a Disney Princess? This could be a question regarding corporate decisions, as the Walt Disney Company has a specific classification for their "Princess Line" media franchise and toy line, but it's also a bit existential. Does a character have to be canonically royal to be considered a Disney Princess, or are they something else entirely? As it turns out — there are rules to be considered an official Princess, with Disney currently recognizing 13 characters with the distinction. She must play a central role, cannot be introduced in a sequel, must be royal by birth or marriage (or perform a heroic deed), must be human/human-appearing, and the film can't be a flop or unbelievable hit.
Elsa and Anna are both so popular that they are not lumped in together with the Princesses, and heroine figures like Alice (of Wonderland...

With the Hollywood writers and actors strikes having been resolved and studios having delayed some key releases, how will the box office be affected?
Exhibition stocks analyst Eric Wold of B. Riley took a stab at answering the question, adjusting his forecasts in a Tuesday report. He reduced his 2024 industry box office projection “given the number of films that have been moved by studios in recent weeks,” adding that “we feel that we are taking a more conservative approach to our updated 2025 industry box office projection — with an argument that we could have at least maintained, if not increased, our prior projection given the number of high-profile films moved into that year.”
Wold lowered his fourth-quarter 2023 domestic box office projection due to recent performance trends. “Through this past weekend, domestic box office revenues have totaled $873 million, which represents an approximately 30 percent decline compared to the $1.242 billion for the same quarter-to-date...
