Visit Films has acquired worldwide sales rights for “Realm of Satan,” the feature film debut of seasoned editor Scott Cummings. The film, a documentary about Satanists, will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and also plays at Cph:dox. On its website, the festival warns potential viewers: “This film contains graphic sexual content.”
Cummings previously directed short film “Buffalo Juggalos,” which won the grand jury prize for live action short at AFI Fest. He has served as the editor on several films that premiered at Sundance including “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” “Monsters and Men,” “Menashe” and “Wendy.”
“Realm of Satan” is a portrait of Satanists in both everyday and extraordinary situations. Visit Films describes the film as “a ritualistic documentary that casts a spell on viewers, luring them into a mystical world of magic, mystery and misanthropy.”

IFC Films has set the U.S. release date for “Corsage,” whose star Vicky Krieps won the best performance prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. Marie Kreutzer’s film will have its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival has just announced that the film will screen there too. IFC Films will then release it in U.S. theaters on Dec. 23.
The film received rave reviews at Cannes, with The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw writing that Krieps gives “an exhilaratingly fierce, uningratiating performance,” and Variety‘s Jessica Kiang describing the “brilliant” film as “a witty subversion of biopic and costume-drama clichés.” “Corsage” is likely to be selected as Austria’s entry for the Academy Award for Best International Film, and Krieps may even have a shot at the best actress Oscar.
Picturehouse Entertainment will release the film in the U.

It’s now widely accepted that despite being a beloved classic, “Gone With the Wind” needs an explanation of its context when it’s screened on TV or in theaters. HBO Max says it will eventually restore the Oscar-winning film to the service, but with “context and framing.” It’s a start, but Hollywood’s vaults are filled with movies that could benefit from an explainer or disclaimer about outdated depictions of race, sexuality, disabilities and more.
The films most often cited as racist, of course, are “Birth of a Nation” and “Song of the South.” But the range of problematic films is wide, including “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (Mickey Rooney’s stereotyped role as a Japanese man is appalling), “West Side Story” (Puerto Ricans are shown almost only as gang members) and 1975’s slave-owner drama “Mandingo” (jaw-dropping and apparently aimed at the KKK demographic).

Black Lightning is a show that has a bit of a rocky past. When its existence was first rumored, it was a series being pitched over at Fox by Greg Berlanti, the man behind such hit CW shows as The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. It seemed like it could have a promising future over at the network, but Fox ended up passing on the project. For fans of Berlanti, this actually seemed like good news. Given the number of shows he had on the CW, it seemed like a wasted opportunity Not to have his next offering end up on the same network. After all, Supergirl started its run at CBS, and after a single season, it eventually made its way over to the CW. It'd be much faster for Black Lightning to actually start at the CW.
But would Black Lightning actually get a pilot order?...
