Jerome Levy’s Vuelta Group, a private-equity-backed European studio, has acquired German production and licensing giant Telepool from Westbrook, the U.S. outfit controlled Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Vuelta will merge Telepool with Munich-based SquareOne, the German producer/distributor it acquired last year. SquareOne CEO Al Munteanu, head of Vuelta Group Germany, will take over the running of the merged company, with Michael Heyd serving as CFO/COO.
Telepool has one of the largest rights libraries in Europe, with German-language rights to more than 1,200 titles, including such features as The Imitation Game, Drive, Olympus Has Fallen, Lone Survivor and French hit Intouchables, as well as Westbrook-produced features like Oscar-winner King Richard. Upcoming features include the Hellboy reboot The Crooked Man and Andrew Niccol’s Lord of War sequel, Lords of War, starring Nicolas Cage and Bill Skarsgård.
Yoko Higuchi-Zitzmann, who took over as CEO at Telepool two years ago, will leave the company.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man has been accused of using generative AI to design its creatures. It hasn’t (but another demon film has).
Feature image: Ron Perlman as Hellboy in Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy, which emphatically didn’t use generative AI.
Update: A previous version of this article was written before the film’s director issued his clarification, in which he stated that producer Jonathan Yunger’s comments were incorrectly attributed to Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
The use of AI is perhaps the most hotly debated subject in the arts today. Only a few weeks ago, we reported that AI was used in Late Night With The Devil to create the inserts seen in the film that follows David Dastmalchian’s talk show host chatting to an actual demon. Many took to social media to condemn the film’s use of it, arguing it took jobs away from real artists.

Netflix's "Raising Dion" returns for its second season in February, and based on the trailer, it'll be action packed with new allies and old enemies throwing 10-year-old Dion (Ja'Siah Young) for a loop.
The Michael B. Jordan-produced coming-of-age series - based on Dennis Liu's 2015 comic book and short film - will continue to follow Dion as he gets the hang of his superpowers with some help from his new Biona trainer/mentor, Tevin (Rome Flynn), as well as the Triangle of Justice, made up of his friends Esperanza (Sammi Haney) and Jonathan (Gavin Munn).
It's been over two years since the show first premiered on Netflix, meaning it's also been a while since we've seen Dion and his special powers in action. In season one, he was just a regular 8-year-old kid trying to wrap his head around his newfound superhuman abilities, but by the end of it,...

The Conjuring universe is the gift that keeps on giving to horror fans. Each movie in the franchise features multiple ghosts and demons and many of those terrifying characters go on to get their own spinoff movies. It’s already happened with The Nun, Annabelle, and possibly The Crooked Man. And now, according to sources close to Wgtc, The Bride is next up to receive her own outing.
If you’ll recall, the character featured heavily in Annabelle Comes Home, where The Bride was one of the spirits who was already kept under lock and key by Ed and Lorraine Warren in their house. The spinoff will reportedly take us back to the case which first brought The Bride into contact with the ghost hunters and we’ve been told by our sources – the same ones who said Bill Murray was returning for Ghostbusters: Afterlife and a new Scream movie is in the works,...

The characters—both the good and the evil ones—that lurk within the "Mignolaverse" are an eclectic and restless bunch, and sometimes their personalties and persistence require more stories to be told. Such is the case with Tom Ferrell and Effie Kolb, who, after appearing in 2008's The Crooked Man, will make a comeback in Hellboy and The B.P.R.D.: The Return of Effie Kolb.
A two-issue miniseries making its debut on February 19th, 2020 from Dark Horse comics, Hellboy and The B.P.R.D.: The Return of Effie Kolb will bring together Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, artist Zach Howard, colorist Dave Stewart, and letterer Clem Robbins. I thought that Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark was a pretty fun horror flick! I enjoyed the scares that it had to offer, and it was fun watching my kids react to those scares. They movie completely freaked them out!
In case you weren’t aware, the movie used a lot of practical effects to bring the monsters included in the story to life. They wanted to avoid CGI if they could when bringing artist Stephen Gammell’s gnarly illustrations from the book to life, and they did an awesome job pulling that off.
I’ve got a new featurette from the film to share with you that shows off “The Corpse,” who creepily comes looking after her missing toe. ‘Annabelle comes home’ are three words you don’t want to hear on a cold winter’s night – especially when it involves that Raggedy Ann doll that continues to haunt our dreams on a regular basis.
It is, of course, the breakout star of The Conjuring film series, Warner Bros. and New Line’s ever-evolving horror franchise that is about to take a dark turn this summer with the aptly titled Annabelle Comes Home. It’s the third spinoff movie featuring that by-now infamous doll, only this time, it’ll feature paranormal investigators/demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who can be seen attempting to contain Annabelle in today’s new trailer.
They won’t do so alone, mind you, given the Warrens have sought help from a local priest to trap Annabelle behind a sheet of sacred glass. But such precautions are wasted on the real devil doll, given Warner...

While the demonic nun version of Valak may be the first thing many horror fans think of when The Conjuring 2 comes to mind (especially after The Nun was released in 2018 and Neca unveiled their figure of the titular character), the Crooked Man is no doubt the source of plenty of nightmare fuel as well, and Neca is bringing the haunting entity to life in a new Ultimate figure that's featured in eerie photos ahead of its release this September.

The Conjuring Universe is set to expand further with its 2019 slate, starting with the release of The Curse of La Llorona next week, and continuing later in the year with Annabelle Comes Home. However, one project which has been in development for some time now is The Crooked Man, which doesn’t sound like it’s ready to go into production any time soon.
The character of the Crooked Man was first introduced in 2016’s The Conjuring 2, and was announced to have a spinoff in development back in 2017. During ComicBook.com’s visit to the set of Annabelle Comes Home, however, producer Peter Safran explained that this creepy figure eventually took a backseat to one of The Conjuring 2’s other breakout stars.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: In honor of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” which effectively reboots Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” saga, which current movie franchise should be put out of our misery once and for all?
Carlos Aguilar (Carlos_Film), The Wrap, Remezcla, MovieMaker Magazine
Cancelling the “Avatar” franchise before it even becomes one would be ideal, but we know that James Cameron’s arrogance won’t allow that to happen. Aside from their ridiculous alleged titles, the prospect of four more movies based on a virtually forgotten blockbuster from 2009 seems more like a director’s refusal to let go than something fans are eager to consume. Surely there are audiences out there that hold this sci-fi version of “Pocahontas” with blue aliens dearly (some might even rewatch their old DVD...

It may not be receiving the best reviews, with a score of 27% on Rotten Tomatoes at time of writing, but the latest outing in The Conjuring franchise has proven that horror is healthier than ever, and we couldn’t be happier about it.

Broken down, that’s $109 million on home turf with another $221 million coming in from overseas. And with a budget of only $22 million, you can probably imagine how happy the studio is with this.

Let find out! “We’re still working on the script for it,” producer Peter Safran told Cinema Blend. “The bar is […]

With The Nun having the biggest opening film in The Conjuring franchise so far, the franchise has no signs of slowing down. We’ve got The Conjuring 3 coming, Annabelle 3 is in development, and then there’s a film being made based on The Crooked Man.
Thanks to Cinema Blend, we have an update on The Conjuring 3 that comes directly from producer Peter Safran. It’s revealed that that the script is being worked on and they are planning to begin production next year in 2019. He also added that they are hoping to release the film in 2020. When asked about the project, Safran said:
“It’s actually coming along great. David Leslie Johnson is working on the screenplay, and I feel pretty confident they will have that one up and running next year.”
David Leslie Johnson is the screenwriter behind the first two Conjuring films which were so freakin’ great!

It is with a degree of surprise that we have seen the development of The Conjuring universe over the last few years. Starting with the 2013 smash horror hit The Conjuring (inspired by the case studies of real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren) director James Wan put the wicked wheels in motion for a horror franchise and since then we have had demonic doll Annabelle (from the first film) inspire two movies of her own and Wan deliver a 2016 Conjuring sequel. Now, after scaring the ‘bee-jesus’ out of audiences, as a side-character in James Wan’s aforementioned excellent The Conjuring 2 (also known as The Conjuring: The Enfield Poltergeist), demon Valak (or ‘The Nun’) returns in her own spin-off origin film.
Like 2014’s Annabelle, The Nun is an instalment in the series that feels less deep, emotive or impactful than its franchise brethren but despite the script borrowing from cliché,...

Despite a rather shaky critical reception (28% on Rotten Tomatoes at time of writing), the latest entry into The Conjuring franchise has proven that horror is healthier than it’s been in decades, and we couldn’t be happier about it.
This weekend, The Nun raked in a whopping $131 million worldwide, on a budget of just $22 million. Broken down, that’s $53.5 million on home turf and $77.5 million coming in from overseas, making for a very, very impressive haul. It’s also a franchise best, with that $53.5 million domestic total trampling over all previous entries in the series.
For the record, they were $41.8m for The Conjuring, $40.4m for The Conjuring 2, $37.1m for Annabelle and $35m for Annabelle: Creation. We can only imagine how happy Warner Bros. and New Line must be about the health of the franchise and you can probably expect films in the Conjuring universe from now until...

Although blockbuster season officially came to a close Labor Day Weekend, “the darkest chapter” in The Conjuring universe isn’t intending on going quietly.
While early tracking had Valak the Defiler headed toward a respectable opening weekend haul – somewhere between $30 million and $40 million – the latest intel is suggesting The Nun could very well bow as high as $50 million. According to Variety, Corin Hardy’s (The Hallow) gothic horror has a decent shot at trouncing the nearly $42 million earned by The Conjuring on opening weekend, as The Nun is projected to debut betwixt $36 million to $45 million.
However, it should be noted there’s evidence denoting that a $50 million opening weekend’s entirely plausible, with some indicating that the film could gross in excess of the half-century mark. Regardless of where it’ll land, though, The Nun should easily take the weekend, as the Jennifer Garner-led Peppermint is expected to earn between $10 million and $15 million,...

With a theatrical release penciled in for this Friday, September 7th, New Line’s aggressive marketing push for The Nun is now beginning to reach its shrill, blood-curdling crescendo.
And to prove it, Bloody Disgusting has relayed three suitably terrifying new promos for the Conjuring spinoff, teasing thrills, spills and demonic forces not of this world.
One particularly creepy clip revolves around Demian Bichir’s Father Burke, who finds himself smack bang in the middle of a supernatural trap. He looks to have journeyed deep within the bowels of the Cârța Monastery, only to be hunted by Valak, the titular entity capable of bending reality to her will – check out the hooded figures taunting Father Burke as he begins to descend into madness.

Javier Botet knows a thing or two about The Crooked Man – hell, he’s the one who played the ghoulish creature during The Enfield Poltergeist two years ago.
And while James Wan’s horror sequel gains a lot of credit for introducing Valak (Aka The Nun), the Conjuring’s second installment also summoned Botet’s lanky nightmare into the frame, where he ultimately earned a spinoff movie of his own.
It’s still gestating in the bowels of development, and has been described as a “dark fairytale” that’s loosely connected to the wider Conjuring franchise. Because make no mistake, The Crooked Man is still marching forward, as Javier Botet himself confirmed during a recent interview with ComicBook.com:

Proving he’s one of the busiest bees in Hollywood, it’s been revealed that James Wan, director of Aquaman and one of the architects responsible for the Conjuring Universe, helped oversee reshoots on The Nun.
Via Entertainment Weekly, director Corin Hardy has confirmed that, when The Nun entered the home stretch and he identified the areas in need of fine-tuning, James Wan agreed to shoot some additional photography on his 1950s-set spinoff – a spinoff that’s all about the ghoulish entity known as Valak.
Fans of the Conjuring series ought to be pretty familiar with the hooded abbess, given her involvement can be traced back to The Enfield Poltergeist. But just like The Crooked Man, New Line has ordered up a standalone movie for The Nun, and it’s now right around the corner, thank the heavens.

With the exception of Paramount and Bad Robot’s Cloververse, The Conjuring universe is probably one of the most interesting movie franchises in the business.
It’s still in its infancy, of course, given that we’re only four films deep, but it won’t be long before viewers are basking in unholy terror for The Nun, or peeping between their fingers at The Crooked Man. There’s also a third, as-yet-untitled project in the works alongside The Conjuring 3 (another Annabelle prequel?), though it isn’t expected to emerge from the shadows until 2019.
Closer to home, though, Corin Hardy and über-producer James Wan (Aquaman) are on the verge of launching The Nun, and today, the first teaser trailer has dropped online (as promised), giving us an idea of the horrors that await us later this year. Proving that superheroes don’t have exclusivity over the idea of cinematic universes, WB’s wildly popular series of films based around The Conjuring shows no signs of slowing down. In the past, I’d joked about the mainline flicks based on the real life cases investigated by the Warrens as being The Avengers in this scenario, a jest which is pretty much holding true.
Next on the docket for solo outings is that of The Nun, which may have been the most memorable thing to come out of The Conjuring 2. That said, it’s a no-brainer that the studio mine the concept for spinoff potential, though I remain perplexed as to why The Crooked Man is also being looked at for a movie of its own, as both personas were merely the same entity assuming different forms – but I’m not here to discuss the reasoning behind milking cash cows.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe receives a lot of praise for constructing tightly woven multi-film plot arcs that contribute to a wider story, Warner Bros. have quietly been building their own version in the Conjuring Universe, which currently consists of The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017) and, coming on September 7th, The Nun.
The films have received middling-to-positive critical notices, but they’ve really excelled financially – for example, Annabelle made back 40 times its $6.5 million budget. Even better for New Line and Warner Bros., the combined box office take for the universe is an impressive $1.2 billion. All this makes it unsurprising that they’re scheduling a couple more films to bolster those numbers even further, and have confirmed today that a sequel to Creation – for now called Annabelle 3 – is due for release on July 3rd, 2019.

Four movies deep, The Conjuring universe is now widely considered to be a cornerstone of Hollywood’s horror scene. Not bad for a film franchise that flickered into life only four years ago.
In that time, James Wan (Aquaman) has delivered The Conjuring and its sequel, The Enfield Poltergeist, while director John R. Leonetti broke course to focus on the nightmarish little doll known as Annabelle. A worldwide haul in excess of $256 million was enough to warrant a sequel (read: Annabelle: Creation), which is now available via Blu-ray and DVD.
Not only was it another feather in New Line’s cap – Creation topped its predecessor’s haul by almost $50 million at the global box office – but David Sandberg’s chilling follow-up helped expand The Conjuring universe into uncharted territory. Next up? The Nun, which recently got hit with a delay, pushing it from July 13th to September 7th.

James Wan and David F. Sandberg are filmmakers currently at the centre of two highly anticipated, relatively new cinematic universes – the individual nature of which could not be more different from each other. One is the DC Extended Universe – with Wan at the helm of Aquaman, and David F. Sandberg set to direct Shazam! – and the other is The Conjuring universe, which has just unleashed Annabelle: Creation into cinemas.
The main difference between the two is that the latter is an entirely original creative property. There are no comic books upon which these films are based – although there are some allegedly “true stories.” That this horror film universe is on track to become one of the more profitable in recent history means that James Wan, who directed the first two, core Conjuring movies, is clearly onto something in terms of compelling narrative.

Four movies in — with at least three more on deck — and the burgeoning The Conjuring Universe is continuing to scare up big box office bucks with no sign of slowing down. Even during the downturned, dog days of summer, the latest film in the franchise, prequel-to-a-sequel “Annabelle: Creation,” topped out as the weekend’s biggest winner, pulling in over $35 million in domestic returns and handily dispatching with its nearest competition (“Dunkirk,” now in its fourth week, made just $11.4 million to take second place). The 21st century has already played home to one of the genre’s biggest hit franchises ever and has steadily rolled out new offerings that seem destined to inspire their own series but, for now, “The Conjuring” is king. And it won’t stop until it becomes the biggest horror franchise of the century.

2014’s Annabelle, which served as the prequel to The Conjuring, was a film that underwhelmed. Quite frankly, it felt like not only a cash grab benefiting on the success of The Conjuring but it didn’t even come close to any of the bars which were raised by James Wan’s film. In fact, the only successful scene in Annabelle was the basement sequence, which James Wan directed. Was it a case of acting too quickly or possibly giving the heavy reins to someone with weak hands? Annabelle: Creation was handed over to newcomer David F. Sandberg who directed 2016’s Lights Out, which seemed to be a success for Warner Bros. Annabelle: Creation is a prequel (the title should have told you that) to Annabelle and, to note, is the first film being advertised as a film in “The Conjuring universe” (more on that later).

Forget The Dark Universe. The best horror franchise currently in play belongs to James Wan, whose “The Conjuring” spin-offs delivers a world filled with nightmarish creatures like The Crooked Man, The Nun, and a doll that could make even Chucky’s blood run cold. Welcome to the frightful terrain of “Annabelle,” now equipped with a whole movie to provide its backstory.
Although 2014’s “Annabelle” did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel, reviews were less than stellar. But the surprise success of Mike Flanagan’s “Ouija: Origin of Evil” offered a solution that was likely too good to ignore: hire an indie horror director to create a prequel-sequel set in the past. And so, the hideously scary doll of the first installment was reborn, this time with “Lights Out” director David F. Sandberg behind the camera.
