Mikaela Hoover and newcomer Christopher MacDonald are the latest actors to join the cast of James Gunn’s “Superman,” which is currently in production.
The duo will be playing Daily Planet staffers Cat Grant and Ron Troupe. Earlier this week, “SNL” Alum Beck Bennet also joined the Daily Planet masthead as Sports editor Steve Lombard.

This article contains spoilers regarding the first two episodes of X-Men ‘97.
Both children of Generation X and Children of the Atom have rejoiced with the early success of X-Men ‘97. The show, now streaming new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+, is a child born out of the nostalgia of the kids who once gathered around box-style televisions on Saturday morning to watch their favorite heroes. More importantly, those young viewers are now grown adults, with several of them a part of this new project.
Among those adults is supervising producer Jake Castorena. Before crossing the tracks to Marvel, Castorena predominantly worked with the tremendously successful animation team at DC, helming direct-to-video films such as The Death of Superman, and Reign of the Supermen. While the Dceu at times floundered in its creative journey, Warner Bros. could almost always count on its DC animated films to be critically and even commercially successful.

Though they've made a fraction of the box office of even the worst DC live-action movie, creatively the crown jewel of DC Comics adaptations lies in their animated movies. It's through animation that the potential of comic book adaptations really shines. Ever since "Superman: Doomsday" was released in 2007, we've had movies that faithfully adapt popular comics storylines (rather than just borrow the name for brand recognition and throw the rest away), original films with wild concepts, and even movies that build on continuity like the biggest cinematic universes.
This is one of the most interesting aspects of the DC animated movies, because there are two proper continuities, each building up characters and storylines and exploring giant crossovers in a way DC has not come even close to figuring out in live-action.
Given how little resources Warner Bros. have used to properly market this universe or make sure audiences are aware of its continuity,...

Reign of the Supermen could have been a very confusing storyline had it not been handled in the way it was. If anyone remembers the comic books they’ll likely recall that the focus of the stories was seen to head off in multiple ways as each new Superman was seen to exhibit their own abilities and had their own distinctive temperament. The movie, thankfully, kept things fairly simple but might have managed to upset a few fans since a lot of the lore had to be cut out to make the runtime conform to something that wouldn’t force the movie

The years spent by Bruce Wayne training to become a crimefighter are some of the most fascinating in the Batman mythos, and have been explored in multiple ways across various mediums. A new DC animated feature, Batman: Soul of the Dragon now offers the intriguing prospect of a 1970s-set story wherein a young Bruce embarks on the path to martial arts mastery. We recently received the trailer and first clip from the film, and now have an introduction to Richard Dragon, one of the main characters from the Bruce Timm-produced movie.
In the video, which you can catch above, voice actor Mark Dacascos describes how we meet Dragon in the 1970s as a super spy who trained with Bruce alongside master O-Sensei. We then see Dragon in training, and being pointed out by O-Sensei to Bruce, foreshadowing the partnership between the two depicted in the recent trailer. At this point,...

Batman: Soul of the Dragon sounds like an interesting departure from the usual slate of DC animated movies. The story is set during the 1970s and follows a young Bruce Wayne on the path of martial arts mastery. We’ll see him training with and battling other elite martial artists, including Richard Dragon, Ben Turner and Lady Shiva, all of whom are under the tutelage of O-Sensei.
We don’t know too much about the plot just yet, but the synopsis has teased that the students will have to face off against “a deadly menace from the past.” Who this is remains a mystery, but given the location the film is set in, the kung fu movie tone and the 1970s time period, I think the chances are good that the menace will be a bare-chested Ra’s al Ghul.

Since the title was announced for Justice League Dark: Apokalips War, the biggest question in some fans’ minds was “hang on, who now?” Justice League Dark, the team of magical heroes that includes Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing and a rotating cast of lesser-known mystics, has always had a very specific lane and focus: the supernatural. Not typically included in that mystical lane are Darkseid, Desaad, Apokalips, or the rest of the Fourth World heroes or villains. But the new trailer for the upcoming DC Animated feature sheds some new light on that puzzling “why:” because they’re all that’s left.

In the midst of all the movie, TV and comic book announcements and trailers that we got at this year’s Comic-Con, the upcoming slate of DC animated films being revealed was one of the most exciting. After all, Warner Bros. Animation has a pretty good track record when it comes to these and they’ve got a lot of good stuff coming down the pipeline, with Superman: Red Son perhaps being the one that grabbed the most attention back in July.
If you’re not familiar with the source material, Red Son was initially published as an Elseworlds story written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Dave Johnson. In short, it explored what would’ve happened if baby Kal-El’s ship had landed in Soviet Russia instead of Smallville, Kansas. And now, we have our first look at what the animated version will be like thanks to the photo in the gallery down below.

As you may have heard, director James Gunn very recently put much speculation to bed when revealing the full cast for The Suicide Squad. For months now, we’ve all been wondering who’s staying and who’s going, and we finally got some answers.
Still, there are some big blanks left to be filled. It’s yet to be confirmed who Idris Elba is playing, though it’s most likely safe to say he’s Bronze Tiger. Another fella who continues to mystify us though is that of Nathan Fillion.
While discussing Task Force X’s next cinematic outing on his Fatman Beyond podcast, filmmaker and comic book writer Kevin Smith threw an idea out there, saying:
“So, he’s gonna be in Suicide Squad? Who do you think he could be playing? Oh my God, I don’t know s***, but let’s just play around because it’s fun.

If you’re not up to speed, then now is probably a good time to tell you that Steve Agee has been enlisted as the voice of King Shark. And now, a man who many would consider being geek royalty has joined the fold as well.
According to Deadline, none other than Nathan Fillion has been added to the cast. This shouldn’t come as much of a shock, as the veteran actor has teamed with James Gunn for various projects in the past. Should you require a refresher, then it’s recommended you dust off your copies of Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither and Super.
At the time of this writing, it remains unknown as to what character or sort of role Fillion is playing in the picture. One can only...

Kevin Smith will be spearheading a Masters of the Universe: Revelation anime series for Netflix.
After bringing She-Ra and The Princesses of Power to the streaming world, Netflix will continue to delve the He-Man extended universe for gold.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith announced at Power-Con in Anaheim on Sunday that he will be bringing an animated Masters of the Universe series called Masters of the Universe: Revelation to Netflix.
Smith, a prolific tweeter and podcaster, has intimated over the past year that he had been working on a project surrounding a major IP. His tweet promoting he and Marc Bernardin's podcast Fatman Beyond live podcast appearance at Power-Con now makes a bit more sense.

Kevin Smith surprised audiences at Sunday’s annual Power-Con convention by announcing a new anime “He-Man” series for Netflix.
The new series, titled “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” will take place in the Mattel toy inspired world and will focus on some of the unresolved storylines of the classic ‘80s show. Smith will serve as showrunner and executive producer.
“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Smith said. “In ‘Revelation,’ we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”

Once we’re ready to put 2019 behind us, I’m confident that we’ll be able to say this year was a great time for DC animation. In my view, Reign of the Supermen, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five and Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were each impressive to varying degrees, with Batman: Hush dazzling audiences most recently.
If those weren’t enough, the talented folks behind these flicks have one more ace up their sleeve, that being Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. For those not up to speed, they should know this’ll be an original tale developed for the direct-to-video market, as opposed to an adaptation of any specific comic book. Furthermore, it’ll indeed take place within the New 52-inspired continuity begun by Justice League: War – only it’s set earlier on the timeline.
Before now, there were only unconfirmed reports regarding when Bloodlines will arrive on...

In the midst of all the movie, TV and comic book announcements and trailers dropping at San Diego Comic-Con, one aspect which I consistently look forward to most is that of the following year’s slate of DC animated films being revealed. If you’re like me, then you anticipate these babies just as much as any live action offering, as Warner Bros. Animation has a pretty good track record in this department.
As expected, the curtain was pulled back following the world premiere screening of Batman: Hush last night, and the first flick named is one that’ll make fans the world over stand up and cheer. Believe it or not, we’re finally receiving an adaptation of Superman: Red Son.

Burbank, CA – Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, in partnership with DC, are currently in production on five new DC Showcase animated shorts for release in 2019-2020.
Inspired by characters and stories from DC’s robust portfolio, the all-new series of shorts will be included on upcoming DC Universe Movies releases, with exception of an innovative Batman: Death in the Family long-form animated short, which will anchor a compilation set for distribution in late 2020.
Each of the five shorts – entitled Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death, The Phantom Stranger and Batman: Death in the Family – opens with a new, live-action branding sequence that features a few Easter Eggs specially added for observant fans.
Sgt. Rock is executive produced and directed by Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) from a script by award-winning comics writers Louise Simonson & Walter Simonson and Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen). The original tale finds battle-weary Sgt.

If you’ve been collecting DC animated movies for some time, then you probably remember the Showcase shorts from nearly a decade ago. For those unfamiliar, these truncated stories allowed for the likes of the Spectre, Jonah Hex and Green Arrow to shine alongside whichever feature film they complemented. Not long after, each were compiled on a separate home video release, Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam, which was considerably meatier than its brethren but still technically a short itself.
Now, after a lengthy hibernation, the concept has been resurrected. Soon enough, cult favorites such as Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death and the Phantom Stranger will stand next to whatever corresponding animated flicks Warner Bros. choose. And much like before, each of those will join a lengthier short in the form of Batman: Death in the Family in one handsome Blu-ray package later on in 2020.

One of the smarter moves the DC Animated Universe did was begin to build interlocking storylines, characters, and voice artists. This has allowed them to build off previous events and let the status quo consistently evolve rather than feel static. (Amazing animation can do this far more easily and effectively than the film division.)
As a result, we are now emotionally invested in this incarnation of the classic heroes and villains, which allowed the redone Death of Superman film in 2018 work so well. This also paved the way for the sequel, Reign of the Supermen, which has received quite the promotional bump.

Pop! Pop! is back! We definitely didn’t miss two weeks! And even if we did, it wasn’t two months, so you’re welcome!
The guys catch up and talk about what they’re currently watching – Joel is hard for You’re the Worst and Taylor is catching up on DC television… though he also watched the Mads Mikkelson movie talked about last episode – Polar… So that happened. And of course, the Super Bowl is coming up, so the championship games are (probably overly) talked about. Rams vs. Saints… Patriots vs. Chiefs… and it all culminates in the motherfuckin’ Rams vs. the Patriots in the Super Bowl! Let’s go!
For some fucking reason, The Fast & the Furious franchise is making a spin-off movie and the guys break down the new Hobbs & Shaw trailer! The Rock… Jason Statham… Idris Elba? Alright, we’re probably in. For some other fucking...

Back in the early 90s Superman was on the decline. Comic sales were down and the DC writers felt the iconic hero was being taken for granted.
What came next has either been credited for revitalising the character, or dismissed as a publicity stunt. Either way, The Death of Superman was a huge moment in the history of the Man Of Steel, and proved to be such a pivotal plot point that it’s been retold in a variety of ways, most recently with last year’s animated direct-to-video release, Death Of Superman.
This year we get the sequel. While the comic book arc involved three chapters – Death of Superman, Funeral For A Friend and Reign of the Supermen – the films have condensed the story into two parts.
With Superman’s demise coming at the hands of vicious killing machine Doomsday, Metropolis is in mourning, and the world slowly recovering...

The death and return of Superman saga continues with Reign of the Supermen, the latest DC Universe animated movie.
Six months after the Last Son of Krypton was killed by Doomsday, it’s reigning supermen in Metropolis. And, based on the rise of earthly, and otherworldly, threats, the planet is in need of a new champion. But which of the four figures claiming to be Superman is the real deal Man of Steel? That’s the premise for the new animated DC Universe animated movie Reign of the Superman, a sequel to last summer’s entertaining The Death of Superman. Available now on digital, and tomorrow on DVD/Blu-ray, the film is the latest to create a pastiche of new and classic DC Comics stories within the New 52 continuity.
Directed by Sam Liu with a script by Jim Krieg, and Tim Sheridan, Reign of the Supermen succeeds in delivering a...

When it comes to Reign of the Supermen, it plays to my nostalgia in a very specific way. You see, as a kid in the summer of 1993, I began delving deeper into comic book collecting beyond just titles featuring Batman. And during that time, there were two things that especially appealed to me most: anything having to do with the X-Men and whatever had Superman’s four possible replacements following his demise on the cover.
Right now, I imagine those old enough can relate in some fashion because either they began collecting around that time, or just share a fondness for that era. Either way, this entry into the DC Universe line of animated films has great significance because it’s really the first time the material has been adapted to this degree.
Previously, WB’s animation division told the death and resurrection story in more truncated fashion when Superman:...
