Netflix isn't just known for cancellations, especially in recent years.
It's also the reigning champion of spontaneous cancellations, catching fans off-guard and delivering some real gut punches.
Some refer to it as a cancellation loop, and it's making viewers wary of investing their time and subscription money on new and exciting shows.
Netflix is dealing with the self-inflicted wounds that come with popular shows, forcing them into an endless loop that's not based on reality but perception.
It's also changing successful, tried-and-true storytelling formulas and driving creators to other streaming platforms so their product stands a chance at longevity.
To be fair, this is not unique to Netflix, especially as other streaming platforms continue to grow.
But Netflix is the Og with the most shows and brand recognition.
Because of that, the damage to the brand from especially infamous cancellations feels more extensive to fans.

The final season of Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai had been split into three batches of five episodes. The first will premiere on Netflix on 18th July.
When Cobra Kai premiered on YouTube Red back in 2018, few would have guessed quite how popular the show would become. What began as an affectionate, ‘by the fans for the fans’ legacy show grew into a behemoth that has become one of the biggest shows on Netflix.
What makes Cobra Kai so successful is that creators and writers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg give Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, reprising their roles of Daniel and Johnny, real character development and story arcs. All while mixing returning legacy characters like John Kreese and Terry Silver with the young cast of karate rivals.

If you had told me back in 1984 that we'd still be following the antics of The Karate Kid 40 years later, I would have laughed in your face.
As The Karate Kid movies progressed, they became less compelling.
Still, the magic surrounding them never subsided, and nobody could have predicted the advent of streaming or the success of Cobra Kai.
The one-time YouTube original was a hit from the start, but it became a juggernaut when it ultimately landed on Netflix.

All good things come to an end, but in the case of “Cobra Kai,” Netflix wants to make the goodbye last as long as possible. The streamer announced today that their popular series’ sixth and final season will premiere in three parts, with the first arriving this summer. Is this a sign of things to come for “Stranger Things” Season 5? Count on it, as that’s another farewell Netflix will milk for all its worth.

Get in a fighting stance, "Cobra Kai" fans: Netflix's most unlikely hit series is about to go out with a three-hit Ko. The popular "Karate Kid" sequel series will bow out with its sixth and final season this summer as planned, but the streamer has just announced that the last chapter will actually be an extended three-part streaming event.
In keeping with Netflix's recent trend of experimenting with different release strategies, "Cobra Kai" will end with three five-episode drops that begin in July and won't end until next year. The first five episodes are due out over the summer, while the second installment is expected in November (with the third premiering on an as-yet-announced date in 2025).
Though another major Netflix show, "Stranger Things," previously had a bifurcated season due to special effects-heavy sequences that needed to cook a bit longer, shows like "Ozark" and "Bridgerton" have also tried the multi-pronged release model.

The final season of Cobra Kai will be less bingeable than usual. That’s because Netflix is splitting the supersized season six across three release dates.
On Thursday, the streamer released a teaser trailer (below), along with its release strategy for the popular family drama series.
The 15-episode final season will drop Part 1 on July 18, then hold Part 2 until Nov. 28. A third part, dubbed “The Finale Event,” won’t be released until sometime in 2025.
The official description: “Picking up with Cobra Kai eliminated from the Valley, our senseis and students must decide if and how they will compete in the Sekai Taikai — the world championships of karate.”
Creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have previously called the decision to end the series “bittersweet” but one that lets them bring Cobra Kai to a close the way they want.

Cobra Kai season 6: Netflix announces premiere dates for 15 episode, 3 part conclusion to the series
Production on the sixth and final season of the hit Netflix series Cobra Kai, a continuation of the Karate Kid film franchise, was delayed several months due to the writers and actors strikes last year – but the extended wait is going to be worth it, because Netflix has just announced that the show is wrapping up with a 15 episode season (previous seasons consisted of 10 episodes), and they’re splitting the episodes up to make it a three part event! As they put it, “The end of a legacy… deserves a Grand Finale.” They’ve also revealed premiere dates: Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 1 premieres July 18, 2024. Part 2 premieres November 28, 2024. The Finale Event comes in 2025.

And you thought waiting for the back half of a “Stranger Things” season was agonizing. Netflix is splitting the final season of “Cobra Kai,” Season 6, into three parts.
You read that right. Though it has become commonplace for Netflix to divide new seasons of its biggest hits into two parts, this is the first time the streamer has split a season (of any series) into thirds. The next-up example of a hit Netflix original being halved is mere weeks away. The eight-episode “Bridgerton” Season 3 will premiere the first four on May 16 and the back half on June 13.
“Cobra Kai” Season 6, Part 1 premieres on July 18, 2024; Part 2 premieres November 28, 2024; and finally, Part 3 (dubbed “The Finale Event”) will have to wait for 2025. We do not yet have a specific date for the final one-third.

Sony pushes two of its upcoming releases back by several months, with Kraven The Hunter receiving its second substantial delay.
Sony has announced a couple of delays to two of its biggest upcoming titles.
Kraven The Hunter, the latest film in Sony’s series of Spider-Man spin-off films, has been pushed back by around four months, from August all the way back to December. This marks the second delay for the superhero movie which was originally supposed to release at the tail end of last year before being delayed until August. This second delay now means it has effectively been pushed back by a full year.
According to Deadline, the new release date means Kraven will be able to secure plenty of IMAX and other premium format screens. Whether that’s the reason for the delay, though, the story doesn’t mention.

Looks like a shake-up is happening in Culver City. After initially announcing release dates for “Kraven the Hunter” and “Karate Kid” during the 2024 Summer and Christmas seasons, Sony has decided to delay both films and swap their seasonal positions.
The upcoming “Karate Kid” movie, which sees Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan reprising their roles from various iterations of the franchise, was originally slated to hit theaters on December 13, 2024. The film will now open six months later on May 30, 2025. A source close to the project told IndieWire that the move will allow the final season of the Macchio-led series “Cobra Kai” to conclude before the film hits theaters. The new positioning also allows the family-friendly film to target a wider audience during summer vacation for many K-12 students.

The new Karate Kid movie, starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, was set to have a release date coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original 1984 movie in June 2024. However, the strikes of 2023 moved this release date to December 13, 2024. Now, the latest upsetting update suggests that the movie will not be released during its 40th anniversary year at all. The new date of release for the movie is May 30, 2025.

Since Sony and Disney struck a deal for Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016 with Tom Holland’s debut as the web-slinger, Sony has focused on building its own cinematic universe, known as Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssu). Although Spider-Man has yet to appear in this universe, other associated characters have.
Ssu began with ‘Venom’ in 2018, followed by several other movies including a sequel to ‘Venom,’ ‘Morbius,’ and most recently ‘Madame Web.’ While these movies haven’t received widespread critical acclaim, with ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ gaining more attention as memes than at the box office, Ssu continues to expand. This year, two more movies are slated for release: ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’

Since Sony and Disney made a deal about Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which Tom Holland debuted as the web-slinger in 2016, Sony decided to put more effort into building their own cinematic universe, officially called Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, in which Spider-Man still hasn’t appeared, but some other characters associated with him have.
Ssu kicked off with ‘Venom’ in 2018 and since then several other movies have been released, sequel to ‘Venom,’ ‘Morbius’ and most recently released ‘Madame Web.’ The movies weren’t exactly critically acclaimed, with ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ earning more in meme points than at the box office. But, Ssu goes on, and this year alone two additional movies will be released, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’
‘Kraven the Hunter’ was supposed to be released on August 30, but its release date was pushed back to December 13, 2024. The film took over Karate Kid’s original release date.

When Cobra Kai returns to Netflix for its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid spinoff plans to expand the Miyagiverse significantly. The teen-focused drama Crane kicked martial arts action fans in the face in 2018, building on the Karate Kid legacy started by Ralph Macchio (Daniel Larusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi). With every season, Cobra Kai has grown through fan-service casting, interpersonal drama, and hard-hitting action. No one could have predicted the Miyagiverse would expand the way it has because of Cobra Kai, and now the show’s co-creator, Jon Hurwitz, says fans can expect Season 6 to explore the franchise in exciting ways like never before!
In a thread on Twitter/X, Hurwitz assured fans the final season of the series delivers big surprises, in-depth character flashbacks, and plot elements that expand the Miyagiverse.
“Season 6 expands the ‘Karate Kid/Cobra Kai’ universe more than the first 5 seasons combined.

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. At one point, she invited her “Girls5eva” co-stars — Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps — to join her onstage. The quartet performed the song “4 Stars” from the comedy, marking the first and only time they’ve sung together in public.
But here’s the rub: This was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and all 17,500 seats around the Hollywood Bowl were empty. Bareilles’ concert was being livestreamed, and the cast had no idea what the fans at home felt about their performance.
Which sounds a lot like the fate of “Girls5eva” itself. The comedy was one of the first original series on Peacock, but on a nascent streamer, the audiences weren’t huge. Critics and a small cadre of fans embraced the Tina Fey-produced comedy, but it never caught on with a broader viewership.

Sony‘s untitled Karate Kid film is ready to make Ben Wang‘s heart go pitter-pat after adding Cruel Summer actress Sadie Stanley to the cast. Stanley plays the romantic lead opposite Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) in the forthcoming marital arts drama, which also stars Joshua Jackson, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio.
Plot specifics remain a mystery, though we hear Sony will move the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds identity and strength in martial arts. During his journey of self-discovery, Wang’s character meets a disciplined martial arts master. With Chan and Macchio both appearing in the film, there’s a chance Wang’s character could train under two teachers. Jonathan Entwistle

Three years after arriving at Sony Pictures, Ravi Ahuja has been named President and Chief Operating Officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment, effective April 1.
The executive, who is currently Chairman, Global Television Studios and Corporate Development, is being promoted to a position that hasn’t been previously filled.
While Sony Pictures Entertainment didn’t comment on succession planning, Ahuja’s promotion has all the marks of exactly that in regards to who will ultimately take the reins after Tony Vinciquerra’s tenure ends as Spe Chairman and CEO. Duly note that Vinciquerra is not leaving the studio anytime soon.
Ahuja will keep his current chairman role and title at Sony Pictures Television and continue to report to Vinciquerra.
Similar to Vinciquerra, Ahuja is a Fox Networks vet; the duo worked together there. Ahuja joined Fox in 2007 after a 12-year run after serving as CFO of Virgin Entertainment Group. As CFO of the Fox Networks Group,...

Sony Pictures Entertainment is upping its head of television Ravi Ahuja to president and chief operating officer of the entire studio.
While not explicitly stated by Spe chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra in his internal memo regarding Ahuja’s appointment to the No. 2 role, it is a clear indication of Vinciquerra’s succession plan for when he ultimately decides to retire from his top post in the coming years.
Ahuja, currently the chairman of Sony global television studios and corporate development, will take on his new responsibilities beginning April 1 and shift to Sony’s Poitier Building in Culver City, while still retaining his position as chief of Sony Pictures Television.
He will continue reporting directly to Vinciquerra, and their respective lines of reports and leadership will not be changed as a result of the promotion. Tom Rothman remains in his role as chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s motion picture group,...

The number of actors the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai has brought back to reprise their characters from the Karate Kid films has been very impressive. Not only do you have Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence, but there’s also Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith as villains John Kreese and Terry Silver, Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan as villains-turned-allies Chozen Toguchi and Mike Barnes; Ron Thomas, Rob Garrison, and Tony O’Dell as Johnny’s former Cobra Kai buddies; and appearances by Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko, and Robyn Lively as Jessica Andrews. They even brought Traci Toguchi back as Yuna, the “Girl Bell Ringer” she played in The Karate Kid Part II. But one actor who might not be returning from the films is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid.
