Not so long ago, Netflix had the reputation for saving movies and TV shows. As the biggest streamer, Netflix was able to give closure to fans of "Arrested Development," "Lucifer," "Gilmore Girls," "Designated Survivor," and even "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" when their original networks couldn't (or wouldn't) bring those shows in for a landing.
On the movie side, Netflix famously took "The Cloverfield Paradox" off of Paramount's hands and they shocked the world by adding it to their service right after the film was announced via a Super Bowl trailer.
Those days might be long gone, though, as The Hollywood Reporter has gotten wind that Netflix is axing two of its original movies: "The Inheritance" and "House/Wife." Even in their glory days, Netflix was known to cancel their regular series without explanation or closure, so they've always had a foot in that typical Hollywood machine world, but...

LevelK’s dark comedy “Samuel’s Travels” has sold to Cranked Up Films for North America and the Caribbeans following its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.
Directed by Aik Karapetian, the Latvian-Belgian movie follows Sam, a foreigner who gets lost in the remotest part of Eastern Europe, on the edges of a mythical forest, while searching for his biological father Lagzdins. A minor road accident leads to a chance meeting with a pig-farmer’s daughter whose kind hospitality is a smoke screen to capturing him and making him a slave on the farm.
The movie, which shot mostly in English, stars a mix of established and up-and-coming actors, including Kevin Janssens (“The Ardennes”), Laura Siliņa, Juris Bartkevičs (“Three fold”) and Aigars Vilims (“Piton”). Cranks Up Films is planning to release “Samuel’s Travels” next Spring. It was produced by Gints Grūbe (“Chronicles of Melanie”) at Mistrus Media.

This past Christmas I treated myself and got a subscription to Shudder the thriller and horror streaming service. Shudder has a lot of treats to offer horror fans including the hit series Creepshow and Joe Bob Briggs Last Drive-In just to name a few. The movies Shudder has to offer range from the supernatural to the slashers. One of the selling points in getting Shudder was the movie that I’m about to review called Nightmare Cinema. I’m a huge Mick Garris fan, and when I heard about this film while listening to his podcast Post Mortem, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Nightmare Cinema was the first film I watched on Shudder. The film is an anthology series that follows five strangers into an abandoned theater where they watch their deepest fears playout on the big screen. It was a treat to see Mickey Rourke playing...

Happy Monday, guys! For today’s installment of our ongoing “From Streams to Screams” series, we’re taking a moment to celebrate one of my favorite storytelling aspects in genre cinema: anthology films. The best part about horror anthologies, to me, is the fact that they often have something in them for every type of genre fan, which means that if you’re reading this, most likely there’s going to be something in this list you’ll enjoy.
One note: Nightmare Cinema doesn’t arrive on Shudder until late October, so I didn’t include it here, but you should definitely make time for it once it debuts on their service in a few weeks.
Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (Available on Hulu & Amazon Prime)

Anthology films have been a reliable Hollywood staple since D.W. Griffith’s time-traveling Intolerance and Paramount’s depression-era dramedy If I Had a Million. The short story format has proved especially popular with horror movie fans who prefer their thrills lean, mean and straight to the point.
That humble subgenre contains multitudes – from Masaki Kobayashi‘s elegant Kwaidan to the comic book stylings of Freddie Francis’s Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors to the state of the art shocker Nightmare Cinema – but the great-granddaddy of them all is surely the 1945 classic from Britain’s Ealing Studios – Dead of Night.

Some films are worth the price of admission (if you’re lucky) while others are worth owning. If you read my review of Nightmare Cinema, you know that it definitely falls into the latter category. As the weekend hits, it’s time to bring back the review round-up in order to cover a few more titles arriving in theaters. Today, we’ll be briefly discussing two particular genre efforts, each of them quite different from the other. The movies in question are the true life drama The Command (formerly known as Kursk on the festival circuit) as well as the anthology horror tale Nightmare Cinema. Both of these flicks offers up something different and may or may not be worth your time. That question is something I’ll attempt to answer right now, so let us dive in! The Command It’s impossible not to currently think about HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl while watching The Command. A high profile Russian tragedy that could have, if not been prevented, then reduced with less bureaucracy and corruption? Yeah, there are parallels. However, while the cable prestige program has drawn raves,...

Whether you know him as the director of Critters 2 and Stephen King adaptations, author of original horror stories, passionate horror journalist, host of the Post Mortem with Mick Garris podcast, or creator of the Masters of Horror series, Mick Garris is one of the genre's biggest fans and most interesting voices, and he once again assembles a talented team of filmmakers for his latest project, Nightmare Cinema. With the horror anthology out now in theaters and VOD platforms from Cranked Up Films, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of speaking with Garris about Nightmare Cinema, including the long journey to get the film made, the importance of bringing together an international cast and crew, the making of his segment, "Dead," working with Mickey Rourke, and potential plans for a sequel.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with me, Mick, and congratulations on Nightmare Cinema. This was a lot of fun.

From Hard Candy to 30 Days of Night to the Hannibal TV series and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, David Slade has been giving viewers thought-provoking nightmare fuel for years, making him the perfect choice to be one of the five directors in the new film Nightmare Cinema. With the horror anthology out now in theaters and VOD platforms, Daily Dead talked with Slade about his segment, This Way to Egress, including the short film's emotional journey to getting made, working with writer Lawrence C. Connolly to adapt his short story, and reteaming with Elizabeth Reaser.

Featuring segments directed by Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Ryûhei Kitamura, and Alejandro Brugués, Nightmare Cinema is now in theaters and on VOD platforms via Good Deed Entertainment, and to celebrate the horror anthology's release, we caught up with Sarah Elizabeth Withers, the star of Brugués' segment, "The Thing in the Woods," to discuss facing off against The Welder killer, taking a unique approach to the slasher sub-genre, and working with Brugués to created a compelling and kick-ass character.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Sarah, and congratulations on Nightmare Cinema! What attracted you to playing the role of Samantha in Alejandro Brugués’ segment, “The Thing in the Woods”?

Mick Garris, Joe Dante and David Slade are among the horror directors contributing to Nightmare Cinema, an entertaining anthology in the spirit of Garris’ Masters of Horror TV show. The stories themselves have a surprisingly high hit rate, but the film is let down by its poorly thought-out linking concept. The set-up is almost too simple, taking the title entirely literally. When random people walk past the well-lit-but-seemingly-abandoned Rialto cinema, they see their name appear on the marquee. Intrigued, they enter the cinema, where a creepy projectionist (Mickey Rourke as The Projectionist) shows them a film that features their death.

Writer, producer, director and horror mega-fan Mick Garris assembles a cadre of like minds to create “Nightmare Cinema.” This anthology feature is basically a two-hour, big-screen version of the several macabre TV anthology series he’s been involved with since the mid-’80s “Amazing Stories.” Comprising five directors’ tales linked by the inimitable Mickey Rourke as a diabolical projectionist, this feature falls short of Garris’ greatest effort in that vein: His all-star 2005-07 cable pet project “Masters of Horror.” Each segment here has strengths and weaknesses. If there are no outright duds, there’s no real triumph either. But the whole is certainly diverse, lively and reference-packed enough to please horror fans attracted to this kind of enterprise, which are so often (see last year’s “Tales From the Hood 2”) so, so much worse. Cranked Up Films is releasing to 25 U.S. screens and on demand June 21.

Last year, Daily Dead was proud to once again sponsor and experience The Overlook Film Festival, which took place in the historic (and quite possibly haunted) confines of New Orleans. We're looking forward to sponsoring the third Overlook Film Festival, which is returning to The Big Easy May 30th–June 2nd for another round of immersive events, essential screenings, and live performances, and this year's killer lineup has now been announced!
Featuring The Dead Don't Die as the opening night film and The Lodge as the closing night movie, with plenty of must-see screenings and events in between, including episode two of Swamp Thing, a master class presentation by Robert Rodriguez, two live presentations by author Grady Hendrix, a live recording of Post Mortem With Mick Garris, The Pumpkin Pie Show one-on-ones by Clay McLeod Chapman, and the world premiere of Fangoria's Satanic Panic (directed by Chelsea Stardust).

After Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy “The Dead Don’t Die” enjoys a snazzy red carpet premiere as the opening night selection of the Cannes Film Festival, its next stop will bring it to diehard genre fans. The movie will make its U.S. premiere as the opening night selection of The Overlook Festival, the New Orleans horror film festival that returns to the French Quarter for the second time on May 30.
The Focus Features release finds Jarmusch bringing his distinctive deadpan approach to supernatural circumstances for the second time, following 2013’s wistful vampire tale “Only Lovers Left Alive.” For “The Dead Don’t Die,” the auteur mainstay appears to be tipping his hat to George Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead,” with the tale of small town characters facing the sudden threat of the undead. I enjoy a good horror anthology series and we’ve got a trailer for a new one coming called Nightmare Cinema, which looks like it will be filled with a lot of creepy fun! This is something that I know I’ll enjoy watching!
The five segments featured in Nightmare Cinema were directed by Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade (30 Days of Night), Ryuhei Kitamura and Alejandro Brugues (Juan of the Dead).
Here’s the synopsis that was shared for it:
A series of down-on-their-luck individuals enter the decrepit and spine-chilling Rialto theater, only to have their deepest and darkest fears brought to life on the silver screen by The Projectionist – a mysterious, ghostly figure who holds the nightmarish futures of all who attend his screenings. By the time our patrons realize the truth, escape is no longer an option. For once the ticket is torn, their fate is sealed at Nightmare Cinema.

The actor is in serious awards contention for his role in “Black Panther,” but also most recently starred in “Creed II,” “Fahrenheit 451” and “Kin.”
Josh Brolin
We all know Josh Brolin played the villain in both “Deadpool 2” And “Avengers: Infinity War” (which is a feat in itself), but he also starred in “Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado” and “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter.”
Tessa Thompson
Thompson seems to have been in every movie this year, and that’s for good reason: She starred in “Annihilation” alongside Natalie Portman, as well as “Sorry to Bother You,” “Little Woods,” “Furlough” and “Creed II.”
Patrick Wilson
Wilson is now just making the rounds as King Orm in James Wan’s “Aquaman,” but the actor also starred in “Insidious: The Last Key,” “”The Commuter,” “The Nun,” “Nightmare Cinema” and he is currently filming the Untitled “Annabelle” film.
