Focus Features’ “The Holdovers” is one of the sweetest movies of the year and is set to become a new Christmas classic. Written by David Hemingson and directed by Alexander Payne, the 1970s-set story follows Paul Giamatti as a school professor tasked with staying behind on campus to look after students not going home for Christmas. What follows is a charming, touching tale about two foes who learn to become friends. Giamatti gives a knockout performance while Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a hot contender for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a cook mourning the death of her son. The movie’s strongest point, however, is its writing.
“Whiskey Cavalier” creator and “Black-Ish” and “American Dad!” scribe David Hemingson crafted the script. He has never been nominated for an Oscar before but we expect that that he’ll win one this year. We’re predicting he will take home...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with The Holdovers, Oscar winner Alexander Payne’s return to filmmaking after a six-year hiatus.
The Holdovers, Payne’s eighth feature, is a 1970s-set comedy centered around Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), a bad-tempered tutor at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with the damaged, brainy troublemaker Angus (Dominic Sessa) and the school’s head cook (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who has just lost a son in Vietnam.
The pic was penned by writer David Hemingson, best known as the creator of Whiskey Cavalier, and marks the second feature Payne has directed from a screenplay he didn’t write. The director’s two Oscars are both in the Adapted Screenplay category.
Earlier this year, Deadline was on the ground at Greece’s Thessaloniki Film Festival, where Payne spoke at length about the film’s scripting process. When asked whether he found it difficult to direct a script he didn’t originate, Payne wryly joked: “If AI could write a script for me, I would be so happy. I trained as a director, not a writer. To be a filmmaker, you write, direct and edit. But I much prefer directing to writing. Writing is hard, and I’m slow at it.”
Payne added that he considered The Holdovers his first experience “directing a writer” as he commissioned the screenplay.
“David Hemingson had written a pilot script that took place in an all-boys prep school, and it was wonderful,” Payne says. “I called him up and said, ‘I don’t want to make your pilot but would you consider writing a feature script based on a different idea?’”
Said Hemingson: “Alexander put it this way: it’s the story of lonely people at Christmas and the way their relationship evolves and the adventures they go on.
“There’s a reason Alexander is such a great writer and it’s because he’s a humanist,” he continued. “He always wants to tell the human story and that’s what he encouraged me to do. I’m forever grateful that he drove me in that direction. He wants to see people in all their flawed glory on screen.”
The Holdovers made a splash when it had its world premiere at Telluride and opened wide November 10 via Focus Features. It popped up three times in this week’s Golden Globes nominations, scoring noms for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy as well as for Giamatti and Randolph.

Alexander Payne‘s movies often fare well in the writing categories at the Oscars with four of his films so far nominated for either Best Original Screenplay or Best Adapted Screenplay.
His second movie, “Election,” was nominated for only Adapted Screenplay in 2000 after it turned Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name into a film. Payne was nominated with his writing partner Jim Taylor, although they lost to John Irving for “The Cider House Rules.” “Sideways” then picked up five nominations in 2005 including an Adapted Screenplay bid for Payne and Taylor after they turned Rex Pickett’s 2004 novel of the same name into a hit movie. Payne and Taylor won this time around.
In 2012, “The Descendants” repeated the record of “Sideways,” matching five nominations and one Adapted Screenplay victory. This time, Payne won alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. They adapted the 2007 novel of the same name from Kaui Hart Hemmings.

Filmmaker Alexander Payne doesn’t exactly have the corner on curmudgeonly Paul Giamatti performances, or unexpected road trip movies that result in deeply emotional bonds, or stories about found families, or even tales about high school teachers who really, really need to get their lives in order. Still, those do tend to be his most recognizable hallmarks.
They’re all on display in his latest, the Christmastime dramedy “The Holdovers,” which stars Paul Giamatti as, yes, a curmudgeonly high school teacher who needs to get his life in order, and ends up (sort of) doing that by way of an unexpected road trip and the forging of a found family (including Da’Vine Joy Randolph and newbie Dominic Sessa).
“The Holdovers” sounds like pure Payne, right? It is, but it’s also a David Hemingson effort, with the longtime television writer picking up his first film credit with the script, which...

Hollywood might have ground to a halt in recent months during the recent labor strikes, with the role of artificial intelligence in the moviemaking business a key stumbling block between studio bosses and both the writers and actors guilds. But two-time Academy Award winner Alexander Payne (“Sideways”) quipped at the Thessaloniki Film Festival this week that when it comes to AI, he’s all for it.
“If AI could write a script for me, I would be so happy,” Payne joked. “I trained as a director, not a writer. To be a filmmaker, you write, direct and edit. But I much prefer directing to writing. Writing is hard, and I’m slow at it.”

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, to two parents of Greek heritage, two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne was awarded Greek citizenship last year around the time he was working on his latest feature, The Holdovers.
In line with the honor, Payne has returned to his adoptive home to present The Holdovers as one of the centerpiece screenings at this year’s Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
“I’ve screened almost all my films here,” Payne said, addressing the crowd at a presser in Thessaloniki this afternoon.

This The Walking Dead: Dead City review contains spoilers.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Episode 6
The first season of The Walking Dead: Dead City has spent a great deal of time developing some kind of bond between Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). It’s entirely one-sided, as this episode shows, with Negan doing everything he can to try and help Maggie get past the lingering trauma of Glenn’s death at his hand. Maggie couldn’t let it go in season 11 of The Walking Dead, and she cannot let it go now, even though Hershel (Logan Kim) is a teenager and she’s moved on from Hilltop and Alexandria. Hershel long ago let the urge to kill Negan go. Negan long ago atoned for the sins of his past (to most people he’s offended). However, Maggie can’t let it go.
Maggie isn’t Maggie Greene anymore.

Exclusive: Ana Ortiz is finalizing a deal to lead the cast of the HBO Max drama pilot More, from Amy Chozick, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television. Ortiz, who will star alongside Christian Serratos, replaces Veronica Falcón who was originally tapped for the role. The recasting decision was made after the table read, I hear.
Written by journalist Chozick inspired by her reporting, More follows the Lorenz family, a tight-knit clan of seemingly flawless Latinas led by mom/mastermind Leona (Ortiz). The Lorenzes are the Vanderbilts or the Astors of the Instagram era. Drawing some parallels to the Kardashians and their “momager” Kris Jenner, the Lorenzes pulled their way up from debt and obscurity to reality TV stardom and forged a billion-dollar mega-conglomerate not from oil or steel but from something more elusive and modern: Influence.
Ortiz’ Leona Lorenz is the matriarch of the Lorenz family media dynasty.

Foley joins previously announced cast members Melissa Benoist, Christina Elmore, and Natasha Behnam in the show, which was ordered straight-to-series at HBO Max in February after having been set up at both Netflix and The CW. The production designer on Netflix’s Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte has been removed from the Shonda Rhimes show due to allegations of bullying behavior on set.
Netflix confirmed to Deadline that David Arrowsmith is no longer working on the show but did not comment on why, after The Sun reported his behavior with colleagues had “crossed the line” and he had been accused of bullying.
Arrowsmith is a veteran production designer, with credits on both sides of the Atlantic for shows such as Whiskey Cavalier, Deadwater Fell and Cold Feet.
Queen Charlotte tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the Bridgerton world. It will feature the likes of Gold Roshuevel, Adjoin Anode and Ruth Gemmell.
The debate on how to end bullying in the UK business has been boiling for some time now.

Exclusive: Emmy winner Carrie Preston (The Good Fight) has signed on to star alongside Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in the Miramax film The Holdovers, from two-time Oscar winner and seven-time nominee Alexander Payne.
The dramedy written by Whiskey Cavalier creator David Hemingson follows Paul Hunham (Giamatti), a teacher at a prestigious academy who nobody likes—not his students, not his fellow faculty, not the headmaster, who all find his pomposity and rigidity exasperating. With no family and nowhere to go over Christmas holiday in 1970, Paul remains at school to supervise students unable to journey home. After a few days, only one student holdover remains—a trouble-making 15-year-old named Angus, a good student whose bad behavior always threatens to get him expelled.
Joining Paul and Angus is the school’s head cook Mary (Randolph), who caters to sons of privilege and whose own son was recently lost in Vietnam.

“The Walking Dead” continues to live on at AMC, with the network greenlighting a spinoff centered on Maggie and Negan.
Both Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will return for the spinoff, which is currently titled “Isle of the Dead.” The six-episode series will see the two characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror. The series is expected to debut in AMC and AMC Plus in 2023.
“This is a very big day for the expanding universe we are building around ‘The Walking Dead,’” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “It not only adds another compelling series to this collection, it extends our storytelling around two unforgettable characters fans have grown to love,...

Warner Bros. Television Group announced Friday it has renewed a long-standing overall deal with Bill Lawrence, the Emmy-winning executive producer, writer, and showrunner of “Ted Lasso” and his production company, Doozer.
Lawrence, Doozer and Wbtg have been collaborating since 2011. This is his fourth contract with the company. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but company reps confirmed to TheWrap that Lawrence inked a multiyear agreement. His team at Doozer includes president Jeff Ingold and vice president Liza Katzer.
As part of the deal, Lawrence will continue to develop, create, and produce original series exclusively produced by Warner Bros. Television for all platforms, including HBO Max, external streaming services, cable, and the five broadcast networks.

Bill Lawrence, the top comedy showrunner at the moment amid the enormous critical and commercial success of Ted Lasso, is staying put at Warner Bros. TV Group through 2028. After lengthy negotiations, Emmy winner Lawrence, who had a little time left on his current overall pact at the studio, has closed a blockbuster new five-year deal for his Doozer production company, I have learned. Noone is commenting but sources value the pact at more than $100 million, catapulting Lawrence in the very top tear of TV showrunners.
Like other overall agreements of that caliber in the era of Peak TV, the path to this one was not straight-forward, with some sources I spoke to calling it a wild ride. I hear Warner Bros. originally balked at Lawrence’s financial ask. Because he is still under an overall arrangement at the studio, the Scrubs creator could not go on the open market and officially test the waters.

During Scott Foley’s 25-year film and television career, he’s gone meta and played someone working in the industry (as Roman Bridger in “Scream 3”), and he’s worked on a competition program (as a host and judge on “Ellen’s Next Great Designer”). But now his latest project, “The Big Leap” for Fox, combines those two elements, creating a wholly different experience for the veteran actor.
Foley stars as Nick Smart, the boss behind the dance show-within-the-show on “The Big Leap” from executive producers Liz Heldens and Jason Winer. (The show-within-the-show is also titled “The Big Leap.”) Nick is a fast-talking producer who never hesitates to let those around him know how urgent his requests are. He also has a keen eye for the genre, innately knowing what characters the audience will want to watch and how to orchestrate the right storytelling around them to make that audience return.

Miramax has acquired the worldwide rights to “The Holdovers,” the next film from director Alexander Payne that will star Paul Giamatti, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
Payne will now reunite with Giamatti after the two partnered on the Oscar-nominated “Sideways” in 2004. “The Holdovers” has now been given a green light to begin filming this January in New England. Additional terms were not disclosed.
“The Holdovers” is a comedy set in 1970 and follows Giamatti as a curmudgeonly, universally disliked teacher who finds himself stuck at the Deerfield Academy over the course of the holidays along with a trouble-making student and the school’s African American cook, who recently lost her son in Vietnam.
David Hemingson (“Whiskey Cavalier”) wrote the screenplay for “The Holdovers.” Mark Johnson is producing.

It’s been quite a struggle for Alexander Payne to get his next film off the ground. Following up his biggest project yet, scope-wise, with Downsizing, he’s been attached to The Burial, The Menu (now in the hands of another director), a Babette’s Feast reimagining, and even a Mads Mikkelsen-led film that got shut down mere days before production was set to take place. Now, it looks like he’s finally found a film that will move forward.
Payne is set to reteam with his Sideways star Paul Giamatti for a new comedy titled The Holdovers, Deadline reports. Scripted by David Hemingson, Payne sparked to the story after watching an undisclosed 1930s French film about boarding school life––Jean Vigo’s Zero for Conduct, maybe? Featuring Giamatti’s character as a prep school teacher in 1970, he sticks around during Christmas break to supervise students who can’t go home.

Academy Award-winning writer/director Alexander Payne is set to reunite with his “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti for the upcoming comedy “The Holdovers,” set to be shopped at the virtual Cannes market. The long delayed finale of season 10 of The Walking Dead finally brought an end to the war against the Whisperers with the death of Beta and the defeat of his army of the undead. While such outcomes are more or less a given in story arcs, what’s not as certain is who will make it to the end, as the show has become almost as notorious as Game of Thrones for mercilessly offing its characters with alarming regularity. In order to buy the members of his community time to escape Beta’s Whisperer assault, Gabriel racks his shotgun and prepares to make a final stand. The Walking Dead actress Lauren Cohan didn’t think she would reprise her character Maggie Greene in the show’s season 10 finale, which airs this Sunday, October 4th. But after the cancellation of Whiskey Cavalier, in which she starred, it only seemed right to return to her most iconic role.
“[Showrunner] Angela Kang and I felt that there could be so much more awesome Maggie story to tell,” she said on Rolling Stone’s The First Time. “It was a very fluid creative conversation where you felt so many cool possibilities.

Actor and comedian Vir Das, who was named to Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” list in 2017, has enlisted UTA for worldwide representation in all areas.
Das’ latest comedy special, “Vir Das: For India” debuted on Netflix in January. He has a long history with the streamer, becoming the first comedian from India to have a stand-up special on the platform when his show “Abroad Understanding” premiered in 2017. Following the success of that show, Das inked a multi-special deal and followed it up with “Losing It” in 2018. Currently, Das stars in the local language series “Hasmukh,” which he also created.
After making a splash with guest appearances on “Conan,” the actor made his U.S. television debut on “Whiskey Cavalier” in 2019. Das was a series regular on the ABC drama, which starred Scott Foley and Lauren Cohen. The same year, Das launched the Amazon Prime Video series “Jestination Unknown,” an unscripted...

The end is nigh for The Walking Dead, sort of.
The zombie apocalypse series based on Robert Kirkman’s comics is coming to an end in 2022 with an expanded 11th season.
However, fans of the once highest rated show on the small screen shouldn’t fret too much at the loss of the mother show. AMC has already given the go-ahead to a new Twd spinoff starring fan favorites Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride in their roles as Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier. Created by Twd showrunner Angela Kang and Deadverse chief content officer Scott M. Gimple, that as yet untitled series is scheduled to debut in 2023.
As was announced at this year’s coronavirus induced virtual Comic-Con, the pandemic delayed Twd Season 10 finale will now air as a special episode on October 4 with 10 additional episodes to air in 2021 for the current cycle. Tearing a page out of the playbook...

The remainder of the season’s 10 episodes are set to arrive every Friday, starting with episode four on August 21. As the creator of Scrubs, Spin City, and Cougar Town, TV writer/producer Bill Lawrence is no stranger to “happy place” sitcoms. Yet Ted Lasso, his latest creation alongside Jason Sudeikis, sets a new bar for relentless optimism in TV comedy.
Ted Lasso is a fish-out-of-water story in which a fish decides he can do just fine on land too, thank you very much. Sudeikis stars as the titular American college football coach who takes on the challenge of managing a mid-tier English Premier League soccer team. The concept is based on a series of commercials that Sudeikis produced for NBC Sports to promote its Epl coverage. In the shorts, Ted Lasso is an overmatched football coach trying out his hand at a different kind of football where nobody uses their hands.
Now an Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso has gone from a one-off joke on American ignorance to a...
