For the Australian alt-dance trio Rüfüs Du Sol, playing Coachella feels like returning to a home away from home. Composed of Tyrone Lindqvist on vocals, Jon George on keys, and James Hunt on drums, the group had long dreamed of playing the California festival before they showcased their album Bloom, a celestial 11-track house album, at Coachella in 2016, followed by a live set in the desert in 2019.

John Rhys-Davies is a legendary actor who portrayed the role of Gimli son of Gloin in Peter Jackson’s iconic trilogy The Lord of The Rings from 2001 to 2003. With an ensemble cast starring alongside him, Rhys-Davies had no idea of the success that the film was about to receive.
Alongside Rhys-Davies, there were several other actors who had no idea about the success that the films would receive in the future. Well, John Rhys-Davies seemed to state that he didn’t have much faith in Peter Jackson’s adaptation.

Macu Machín’s “The Undergrowth” (“La Hojarasca”) took home the top MiradaCanaria prize at the 17th MiradasDoc, which ran March 15-22 in Tenerife, Spain.
Produced by El Viaje Films, Machin’s debut feature has been picking up accolades since its world premiere at Berlinale’s Forum, snagging Best Spanish Picture and director at the Malaga Film Festival’s Zonazine, a sidebar for edgier and sometimes smaller pics.
The jury praised the doc for its “sensitive and evocative portrayal of three sisters and their deep bond of love for each other and their homeland.” In it, two elderly sisters join a third to hash out their shared inheritance of a plot of land as the rumble of an active volcano echoes close by.
Part of a burgeoning Canary Islands cinema, “The Undergrowth” explores questions of “identity, belonging, and the dynamics of the place where me and my family came from,” Machín told Variety.

With a career spanning over six decades, Ian McKellen has entertained audiences across generations. The Hollywood star isn’t typecast, as he can convincingly portray heroes, villains, Shakespearean characters, comedic roles, and more.

Even if you’ve read Bryan Lee O’Malley’s seminal Scott Pilgrim Oni Press graphic novel series and even if you’ve seen Edgar Wright’s 2010 live-action Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski’s new Netflix animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off isn’t what you’re expecting it to be.
Because of Netflix’s very restrictive requests regarding what critics can and cannot reveal about Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I can’t tell you how or why it’s different or what the differences do to the themes of O’Malley’s fantastical story. Heck, I can’t even tell you if there are guest stars, much less who they are or who they play.
Darn.

On his sophomore effort, Bloom, Australian singer Troye Sivan struck a delicate balance between unapologetic queer desire and the kind of hole-in-your-soul introspection that has, until recently, been traditionally expected of LGBTQ+ pop artists. In other words, gay sex is permissible, as long as you’re a little bit tortured about it.
Five years later, Something to Give Each Other finds Sivan older, bolder, and, for a large part of its running time, unrepentantly horny. The album’s lead single, “Rush,” was initially released in a two-and-a-half-minute edit that captures the sensation of a quick hit of poppers (the song’s title also happens to be the name of a popular brand of alkyl nitrite). The version of the throbbing house track that appears on the album, however, is a full minute longer, with a breakdown that lets Sivan breathe—and luxuriate in the afterglow.

In October of 2020, The Band Perry — siblings Kimberly, Reid, and Neil — headed down to Dallas, Texas, to try and give their recording days as family trio one last shot. Unmoored during Covid lockdown and slowly finding their way back to Tennessee from their shared Sherman Oaks, California, house, they made a series of demos with Paul Cauthen’s producing team that never saw the light of day. Kimberly Perry was a fan of Cauthen’s 41 Project, especially his “Cocaine Country Dancing,” and thought the feel might suit them and their Southern gothic inclinations.

Kimberly Perry, who was the singer in the country trio the Band Perry when they were radio stars a decade back, re-interprets her group’s signature 2010 hit with her new release, “If I Die Young Pt. 2.” The song is from an upcoming solo country project that comes after her sibling group’s excursions into pop and beyond.
The original “If I Die Young” was a combination of pretty, youthful poetry and gorgeous melodies. “The sharp knife of a short life/Well, I’ve had just enough time,” Perry sang at the time.

Katy Perry and former “American Idol” contestant, Sara Beth Liebe, appear to be on good terms after Liebe expressed last month that she felt hurt by Perry’s “mom shaming” comment during her audition.
In fact, during Sunday’s episode, Perry rallied for Liebe as she tried to convince the singer multiple times to stay in the competition as she struggled with wanting to go home to be with her three young children. The 25-year-old ultimately chose to quit the competition despite Perry’s efforts.

But then I also know that you lose out on your fullest potential and I know that you love your family for your kids. I know that as a mother. But remember, self-love is just as big as motherly love.

The power of sound and the impacts of war dominated the 26th Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival awards, with French doc “07:15 – Blackbird” taking home both the main prize and the cinematography award.
The story of a young girl’s quest to identify the call of a mysterious bird, directed by Judith Auffray and filmed by Mario Valero, the 30-minute doc’s “fairy-tale poeticism,” balancing natural wonder and technology, won over the Opus Bonum jury. Ok, now that we’ve gotten that nitpick out of the way… Reboot is actually really good! The new Hulu sitcom that parodies sitcoms — debuting Tuesday, Sept. 20; I’ve seen the first four episodes — is one of the year’s funniest new comedies, gleefully skewering the television industry with razor-sharp barbs that approach the lofty heights of The Comeback and BoJack Horseman. In a crowded theatrical landscape, how do local films with smaller budgets find a path to audience when competing against studio tentpoles and blockbusters?
A key way to get cut-through is via carefully crafted publicity and marketing campaigns, which speak to not only what the film is but who it is for.
Despite their importance in creating interest in a project, the quality and quantity of the materials that make up a campaign are often at the mercy of the available budget, time and producer priorities.
The perception that a movie is ‘sold’ to audiences only after it is wrapped and completed means unit publicists tasked with devising a publicity plan do not always have access to the areas they need in order to capture effective assets during production.
In the last few years, a shift towards streaming and subsequent changes to the traditional modes of distribution, such as shorter...

Since 2011, the Edinburgh Film Festival’s Talent Lab has nurtured a number of rising filmmakers through an assortment of masterclasses, workshops and individual mentoring sessions: Talents like Ben Sharrock (“Limbo”), Eva Riley (a recent winner BIFA winner for “Perfect 10”) and Rob Savage (“Host”) are alumni of the program. In 2019, however, the program yielded the Talent Lab Connects offshoot, in which a smaller selection of writers, directors and producers are given the chance to develop specific feature film or series projects with a range of industry mentors.
Now in its third year — and its second of the program taking place online — the program will be headed again by renowned U.K. script editor Kate Leys, whose recent credits include Simon Amstell’s “Benjamin,” Bart Layton’s “American Animals” and John Maclean’s “Slow West.”

We’re not even halfway through the year, but 2021 is shaping up to be a record-breaker for Australian films at the box office.
So far, the 25 local films and documentaries to screen theatrically have grossed $67.5 million, according to Numero.
That number means this is already the second highest year for Australian film on record, having overtaken 2001’s annual result of $63.1 million (not adjusting for inflation).
Our best year at the box office was 2015, when ticket sales tallied $88 million, spurred on Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dressmaker, Oddball, The Water Diviner, Paper Planes and Last Cab To Darwin.
With more than half the year to go, that record could be surpassed come December. By way of comparison, in the first six months of 2015, receipts stood at $34 million.
This is an incredible result at the best of times, but is made more so by the fact exhibition is still disrupted by the...

Warner Bros crime thriller The Little Things held pretty steady at the global box office, with estimated weekend takings of $3.1m, down just 6% from the previous session. However, that number masks very varied outcomes domestically and internationally.

With continued paucity of product from the US and other international territories, Australian films remain the main event at the box office.
Showing incredible legs, Robert Connolly’s The Dry is still the no. 1 title, earning just under $1.2 million across its sixth weekend, a drop of just 18 per cent.
The mystery drama, based on the novel by Jane Harper, has now made $16.2 million in total for Roadshow Films. That figure makes The Dry the 17th highest grossing Australian film of all time (without adjusting for inflation), and the fourth highest performing local film of the last decade behind Lion, The Dressmaker and Red Dog.
Fellow Roadshow drama Penguin Bloom, directed by Glendyn Ivin and produced by the same production company as The Dry, Made Up Stories, remains in the number two spot. In its third frame, the Naomi Watts-starrer earned $729,269, a fall of 43 per cent, to bring takings to $5.2 million.

On paper, you would think Netflix’s upcoming feature, “Penguin Bloom,” would be in the middle of the awards season discussion. The film stars Naomi Watts, who has turned in some truly great performances over her career. ‘Bloom’ is based on a captivating true story about one person’s recovery after a near-fatal accident. But yet, “Penguin Bloom” isn’t really in the conversation, after its lackluster debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Netflix will be starting next month off with a bang, offering a rock solid collection of new movies and shows from day one. From dramas to comedies to action-packed thrills, you’ll surely be able to find something you like throughout January. But it’s not until later in the month that we’ll get a look at a brand new film from Andrew Lincoln, and it’s shaping up to be an emotional rollercoaster well worth checking out.
Though he may be best known as Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead, Lincoln certainly isn’t a stranger to the big screen. He hasn’t had a substantial number of large roles in feature films, but his performance in 2003’s Love Actually is fondly remembered by fans who like to reminisce about his earlier work.

The distributor shifted Ivin’s drama starring Naomi Watts, Andrew Lincoln and Jacki Weaver, adapted from Bradley Trevor Greive and Cameron Bloom’s novel, which had been scheduled for New Year’s Day, to the Australia Day long weekend.

UK animation firm Aniventure has set Peter Dinklage (Game Of Thrones) and Lilly Singh (A Little Late With Lilly Singh) for the lead voice roles of Hitpig and Pickles, respectively, in animated movie Hitpig.
Also joining the voice cast are Rainn Wilson (The Office), RuPaul (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Hannah Gadsby (Nanette) and Dany Boon (Raid: Special Unit).
Pic is co-directed by Cinzia Angelini, storyboard artist on Minions and Despicable Me 3, and Maurizio Parimbelli, animator on Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix. Producers are Adam Nagle (Riverdance: The Animated Adventure) and Dave Rosenbaum (The Secret Life of Pets).
Set in a futuristic world, the film follows a grizzled porcine bounty hunter who accepts his next hit: Pickles (Singh), a naive, ebullient elephant who has escaped the clutches of an evil trillionaire. Though Hitpig initially sets out to capture the perky pachyderm, the unlikely pair find themselves on an...

When Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts) fell from the balcony of her family’s holiday home in Thailand, leaving her paralysed, the successful mother-of-three thought she would never get her life back. Penguin Bloom is the story of Sam’s arduous road to recovery and the magpie which became an unlikely, but much-needed, companion.
If that premise sounds a little formulaic, Penguin Bloom never transcends the modest ambitions it sets for itself. Despite stellar work from Watts that has come to be an expectation, director Glendyn Ivin is unable to lift the rest of his film above just okay. File it under “Naomi Watts Outdoes All Others”, an increasingly substantial list which also includes King Kong, J Edgar, The Impossible, Diana, The Book of Henry and too many more.
