A “Pitch Perfect” series has been ordered at Peacock with Adam Devine onboard to reprise his role from the film franchise, Variety has learned exclusively.
The series is set several years after the events of the films. Devine returns as Bumper Allen, who moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin.
Bumper was the main antagonist of the first film and the leader of the all-male a cappella group The Treblemakers. He returned in the second film as a supporting character and the love interest of Rebel Wilson’s character, Fat Amy. He worked as a backup singer for John Mayer before returning to his alma mater, Barden University, as a security guard.

Okay, that’s it, no more movies about lonely white people getting unsolicited life advice from sentient apps on their phones. “Her” was cute and all, but the combined torpor of last year’s “Jexi” and Melissa McCarthy’s equally grim new “Superintelligence” is enough to retcon Spike Jonze’s bittersweet cyber-romance into the Manhattan Project of Hollywood’s worst new sub-genre.
In hindsight, of course, it’s all too easy to see how Jonze became death, the destroyer of worlds: The high-concept premise of his 2013 film, so delicate that it might shatter in someone else’s hands, doubles as low-hanging fruit for hacky comedies about regular people being terrorized by the technology that we’ve created for our convenience. A screenwriter pitches something like, “Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Siri wanted to mess with you?” A studio executive hears, “We only have to pay top dollar to one of our leads.

Welcome back to another edition of “Which is Better” here on Nerdly. I tend to, in past articles focus on specific movies or series’ or television shows, but I thought, for the pure hell of it, to pit two big streaming services against each other and decide which is the better of the two.
Now, streaming has become a huge deal. Everyone and their grandmother has some sort of media streaming in their home, be it Spotify for their music needs, Game Pass or Ps Now for their video game desires, or the aforementioned Netflix or Amazon Prime Video for their film and television binging. Some of us nerds even have all of the above, but the less said about us the better.
Netflix is the big-boy in town and has the largest subscriber base of any media streaming service going, with over 167 million paying customers worldwide and growing. When...

There are many things no one should do in a horror movie if they want to live — run back inside the house that holds the killer, have sex, play that haunted video tape, the list goes on — including a classic ripe for contemporary reinvention: Don’t play that weirdo parlor game. Bloody Mary is a bad idea, so is the Ouija board, and Light As a Feather Stiff As a Board has never led to anything good. Why not move that concept into a more modern space? Films about killer smartphones are hardly anything new, from “One Missed Call” to “Cell,” Skype-based offshoots like “Unfriended,” and even the forgettable “Jexi,” which came out in theaters mere weeks ago. But what about a movie about a killer app? “Countdown” fills that questionable void.

Joaquin Phoenix and Joker finished atop the box-office weekend once again. The film took in $55 million over the weekend, to give it two consecutive weeks at the top of the weekend box office and a cumulative domestic take of $192.7 million.
Finishing in second place was the animated adventure of everyone’s favorite oddball family, The Addams Family, which debuted this weekend to the tune of $30.3 million. The second of three films that debuted in the top ten this weekend, the science fiction action film Gemini Man, starring Will Smith, garnered a $20.5 million opening weekend and finished securely in third place.
Meanwhile, dropping from second place last weekend to fourth this weekend was the animated Abominable, which added $6.2 million, giving the family-oriented film a three-week total of $48.0 million. In the face of three new wide releases, there was no dethroning Joker from the weekend's top spot as the film not only topped the weekend box office domestically, internationally and worldwide, it has already generated over $543 million globally in just its first twelve days in global release. As for the newcomers, Uar's The Addams Family led the way with a solid second place debut while Paramount's Gemini Man and Lionsgate's Jexi struggled to find an audience. However, one film that didn't struggle was Neon's release of the Palme d'Or winner Parasite, which made an impact in just three theaters this weekend.
With an estimated $55 million, WB's Joker easily repeat atop the weekend box office. The thriller dipped just -43% in its sophomore frame, pushing its domestic cume to $192.7 million after just ten days in release, dramatically outperforming pre-weekend expectations. Pre-weekend gross assessments are always, at best, an educated guess. The public has a way of deciding for itself, and often at the last minute. “Joker” held better than expected, dropping 43% to $55 million. Most prognoses suggested $48 million or below (our guess was $50 million).
Then, consensus held that “Gemini Man” and “The Addams Family” would vie closely for second place. Instead, the animated reboot of comic-tv show-film franchise scored an easy victory over Ang Lee’s $135 million action film; even star Will Smith couldn’t prevent the disastrous initial numbers.
It’s a quasi-holiday weekend with Columbus Day, which will likely to boost numbers Sunday and Monday. At $138 million, that’s about $40 million less than the 2018 holiday weekend, which took place a week earlier.
Year to date still shows the box office down about $525 million compared to 2018, over 5.5%, and it’s highly unlikely to make up that difference.

Joaquin Phoenix is king of the North American box office once again as “Joker” scores an easy victory in its second weekend with $55 million at 4,374 sites.
“Joker” dominated a trio of new entries with animated comedy “The Addams Family” leading the rest of pack with $30.3 million at 4,007 venues, topping forecasts. Will Smith’s “Gemini Man” wound up under expectations with $20.5 million at 3,642 locations. Adam DeVine’s artificial intelligence comedy “Jexi” generated little interest with $3.1 million at 2,332 screens.
“Joker” showed plenty of traction, declining only 43% from its impressive opening of $96.2 million, the fifth-largest domestic launch of 2019 despite worries about the negative impact of the film’s darker themes. Moviegoers have stayed strongly engaged with a 10-day total of more than $192 million.
The psychological thriller has already become hugely profitable for Warner Bros., which partnered with Village Roadshow and Bron on the $55 million project. And with a solid international performance of $351 million,...

It’s still all smiles for “Joker,” which grossed another $17 million on its second Friday at the domestic box office.
If estimates hold, the Warner Bros. villain flick could score another $60 million come Sunday, down just 37% from its $96 million box office debut. That’s above earlier predictions, which saw the film landing somewhere in the $50 million range, and could push the movie past the $185 million mark by the end of the weekend.
“Joker” also had no problem conquering this weekend’s box office newcomers MGM and United Artists Releasing’s “The Addams Family” and Paramount’s “Gemini Man.” Likely fueled by family audiences looking for a more family-friendly alternative, “The Addams Family” came in at No. 2 with $9.7 million from 4007 locations. If estimates hold, the film should take home around $33 million by the end of the weekend.

Most moviegoers would recognize that as the plot of Spike Jonze’s “Her” — and most would probably say, as well, that Jonze’s cautionary A.I. romantic fantasy, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the depressed loner who comes under the seductive spell of his Siri muse, is the definitive treatment of that subject. But I was my own kind of loner on “Her.” I found the movie to be one-note and monotonous.
It stars Adam DeVine, with his motormouth cuddliness, as Phil, a millennial office-space worker who churns out viral lists of clickbait for a San Francisco-based website. Phil is addicted to his phone, to social media — to anything that puts an invisible filter between himself and the human race. Joaquin Phoenix remains the ruler of the North American box office as the second weekend of “Joker” heads for an easy victory with as much as $50 million at 4,374 sites, early estimates showed Friday.
That’s far above a trio of new entries, led by animated comedy “The Addams Family” with about $30 million at 4,007 venues — above the high end of forecasts. Will Smith’s “Gemini Man” is coming in under expectations with about $19 million at 3,642 locations. Adam DeVine’s artificial intelligence comedy “Jexi” is showing little traction with about $3 million at 3,600 screens.
“Joker” gave a jolt to last weekend’s box office with $96.2 million in the fifth-largest domestic opening of 2019 — achieved amid worries about the potential violence that the film’s dark themes might evoke. It’s showing plenty of traction at multiplexes with a decline of under 50%.

If, for whatever reason, you’re determined to see “Jexi,” you’ll want to arrive with a backup plan. Life is busy, so it’s important to use our time wisely. Perhaps you can mentally balance your checkbook, think through your upcoming schedule, or finally memorize the alphabet backwards. I came up with a long list of all the worthy filmmakers who’ve been unable to make a second movie, or had to struggle for years just to get their first one onscreen.
Although this wasteful effort from the “Bad Moms” team is uninspired in almost every regard, it does advance cinema in a single way: writers-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have figured out how to modernize one of the most traditional and apparently still essential Hollywood tropes: the Crazy Bitch. “Jexi,” which IndieWire can now confirm is the title of a real movie that’s actually playing in theaters and everything, begins with a somewhat intriguing premise: What if Spike Jonze’s “her” had been made for the lowest common denominator? What if it hadn’t been a beloved softboy romance about digital era dislocation, but rather a slapdash comedy about incels (they’re having a moment!) that’s only funny scene featured Wanda Sykes unfavorably comparing smartphone users to crackheads? What if it hadn’t cast Scarlett Johansson as the voice of a sweet A.I. who struggled to balance fragile human emotions with the infinitude of cyberspace, but gone with Rose Byrne as the voice of a cruel, Siri-cold virtual assistant who constantly tormented her user about how ugly his dick looked? See, it’s somewhat intriguing!

Will Smith’s “Gemini Man” topped the animated comedy “The Addams Family” with $1.6 million at 3,000 North American sites on Thursday night.
Paramount’s sci-fi thriller launched similarly to Brad Pitt’s “Ad Astra,” which earned $1.5 million from Thursday previews before opening with $19 million. “The Addams Family” brought in $1.3 million at about 3,000 sites on Thursday.
Both new titles are likely to trail Warner Bros.’ second frame of “Joker,” which outperformed expectations last weekend with a $96.2 million domestic bow. The Joaquin Phoenix-starrer, which has hit $130 million domestically and $280 million worldwide in a week, should take in as much as $45 million in North America this weekend.
“Gemini Man” debuts at 3,642 locations, with more than a third of those screening the film in high frame rate 3D+ format, employed by director Ang Lee to show Smith alongside a younger clone of himself. After a nearly 20-year gestation to the big screen, “Gemini Man...

Saturday Am Update: The weekend's new releases are performing mostly as expected, but before we get to them we have to mention WB's Joker, which brought in an estimated $17 million on Friday, to kick off what is looking like a possible $60 million second weekend, signaling a drop that could be less than -40%. A strong performance and a clear sign this film is resonating with audiences.
As for the newcomers, Uar's The Addams Family leading the week's new titles with an estimated $9.6 million on Friday, looking to finish with a $32+ million three-day performance. The film scored a "B+" CinemaScore.
Behind it, Paramount's Gemini Man finished with an estimated $7.5 million Friday, heading toward a $20+ million three-day. The film also received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
Further down the list is Lionsgate's Jexi, which managed $1.14 million on Friday and is expected to finish around $3-3.5 million for the weekend.

The upcoming semi-holiday Columbus Day weekend will see three new competitors, none of which are likely to present a serious challenge to the second stanza of “Joker.” Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man” with Will Smith and the animated “The Addams Family” are headed for healthy starts, with cellphone-addiction comedy “Jexi” far behind.
More significant this weekend is the platform launch of “Parasite”: Not only is it launching a serious awards run, it’s also the rare foreign film with breakout potential.

Last weekend saw Joker deliver the largest October opening weekend of all-time. However, the overall weekend top twelve was still down -15% compared to last year, which saw not only Venom deliver what was, at the time, the largest October opening weekend, but A Star is Born also opened with nearly $43 million, both en route to $200+ million domestic performances. At the same time, 2018 is still trailing last year's overall yearly performance by nearly -6% and while this weekend offers three new wide releases, they aren't likely to turn the tide. Paramount's Gemini Man has already failed to impress critics despite it's technological wizardry and the Lionsgate comedy Jexi is arriving virtually out of nowhere with little-to-no overall awareness. Only Uar's animated feature The Addams Family seems poised for any kind of solid breakout, timed well to play over the next couple of weeks and into Halloween, but it will...

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky — but can “The Addams Family” give “Joker” a run for its money at the domestic box office?
MGM’s animated comedy about the notorious macabre kin is debuting in theaters this weekend alongside Paramount’s “Gemini Man,” an action thriller directed by Ang Lee that stars not one, but two Will Smiths, and CBS Films’ comedy “Jexi” with Adam DeVine. Those movies will contend with last weekend’s champ, Warner Bros.’ “The Joker,” Joaquin Phoenix’s very R-rated take on Batman’s infamous foe that launched with $96.2 million in North America.
Despite three new nationwide releases, “Joker” is expected to nab first place on box office charts again. Though comparisons are difficult since the super-villain adaptation is very different in scope than other comic-book origin stories, “Joker” should add another $42 million to $48 million in its sophomore outing.

DC’s Clown Prince of Crime is a force to be reckoned with at the global box office.
Still riding high after its historic opening weekend, Joker officially notched a further $9.72 million at yesterday’s box office – an October record, no less – pushing its domestic tally past $105M at the time of writing. That’s a Monday record good enough to best September’s previous champions, including New Line’s It ($8.76M), the R-rated Logan ($7.2M) and the ill-fated Justice League movie ($7.5M).
Joker‘s four-day domestic gross now stands at a whopping $105.9M which, combined with overseas ticket sales, makes for a global total of $248.2M. That’s a career-best opening for the film’s core trifecta: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, and director Todd Phillips.

More box office records to add to Joker‘s list: The Todd Phillips-directed Warner Bros./DC movie earned $9.72M yesterday, repping the best Monday in October for a movie. Joker beats Venom‘s Monday record from last year of $9.63M. The pic’s four-day run including previews stands at $105.9M.
Even more impressive was the fact that yesterday was a non-holiday for Joker‘s turnstile action. Last year at this time, Venom made its moola on a Columbus Day Monday. The latest comic-book adaptation, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, completely dominated the box-office weekend, as it brought in $93.5 million during its opening weekend. The film enjoyed the largest domestic October opening weekend box-office of all time.
This is also the fourth largest domestic opening for an R-rated film of all time as well. Audiences seem positive towards the film, with critics less so. Ultimately, time will tell if the film breaks even more records beyond its first week of release.
As was expected, every other film pretty much dropped a spot in the rankings this weekend in the wake of the Joker tsunami. Abominable finished in second place with $12 million and a two-week total of $37.8 million. Similarly, Downton Abbey fell to third place, but added $8.0 million to give it a three-week total of $73.6 million.
Dropping to fourth place was the comedy Hustlers, which added $6.3 million over the weekend, giving it a four-week total of $91.3 million.

Let it be known, no one party's harder than Seth Rogen. Adam DeVine stopped by the E! studios to chat with Carissa Culiner about his latest film Jexi. The star shared his experience with social anxiety, which his character deals with in the film, and revealed a personal story of a time his coping mechanism went hilariously haywire. "The first time I met Danny McBride I was with Seth Rogen and he was giving me a lot of weed to smoke," Adam shared. "I smoke weed, but not as much as Seth. Seth's like a pro. He's at a Snoop Dog level." Of course, his chill evening took a very quick turn for the worst when he started trying to talk to his comedy hero. "I...

Adam DeVine‘s co-star in the new comedy “Jexi” is a cell phone, more specifically, a virtual assistant voiced by Rose Byrne.
At the film’s premiere on Thursday in Los Angeles, DeVine told Variety that during filming, for timing, he listened through a crackling earpiece to another actress reading Byrne’s lines.
“It was hard [acting opposite the phone] because it was before [Byrne] recorded,” he said. “It was much harder than it [looks], because half the time those ear pods don’t work as well as you want them to.”
Co-director Jon Lucas told Variety of the scene anatomy, “We had a lot of ideas about how the sound would work. Then our sound guy was like those are all terrible ideas. He was 100% correct, and we were 100% wrong. … Frankly, there were times when [Adam] would just take the earbud out and do the whole scene, his side of the scene, without ever hearing anyone talking.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

Remember when 2013's Her made fans believe that an artificially intelligent virtual assistant and an introverted soul could fall in love? The Adam DeVine-led comedy film Jexi is definitely not like that.
The movie follows Phil (DeVine), a writer at a website with few friends and a serious addiction to his phone. When a new upgrade to the latest model features Jexi (voiced by Rose Byrne), a virtual assistant with a penchant for brutal honesty, his dependency takes on a new level. Jexi helps Phil get a life, which includes a real-life girlfriend, but things quickly take a Smart House-esque turn for the worst when Jexi decides she wants Phil all for herself.
You'll never be able to plug your phone into its charger again, but the trailer is still definitely worth a watch! Jexi drops in theaters on Oct. 11.

More likely than not, you are addicted to your smartphone. At least, that’s what the film “Jexi” wants you to believe. Honestly, you probably are addicted, but hopefully not nearly as much as the lead in the comedy about artificial intelligence going rogue.
And while “Jexi” is about a rogue AI, don’t expect this to be some sort of sci-fi thriller. No, “Jexi” is most certainly a comedy, where the AI isn’t going to destroy the world.

We have a hilarious Nsfw trailer for the dark comedy Jexi, starring Adam Devine as Phil, a lonely young pop culture internet writer who is obsessed with his phone.
When he gets the latest version and gets it home, he is surprised to find out that the new virtual assistant within the phone, voiced by Rose Byrne, is a little abrupt, and a lot too personal. Here’s the full synopsis:
Phil (Adam Devine) has a major dependency issue - he’s addicted to his phone. He has no friends, he has a job writing pop culture “Top 10” lists, and his love life is non-existent. But his Facebook status is about to change. When he is forced to upgrade his phone, the latest model comes with an unexpected feature.

Remember Her? The masterful Spike Jonze movie about Joaquin Phoenix falling in love with the iOS on his phone? Well, what if someone took that idea and said: “How can we make this really stupid, and add awful jokes?” The result would be Jexi, at least judging by this trailer. Adam Devine plays a guy who develops […]

"You can buy a thousand new phones and I follow you onto every single one of them." That's not creepy at all. Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for Jexi, a new modern tech comedy from the directors of 21 & Over and Bad Moms. Jexi is a riff on Her, the title being a portmanteau mix of Alexa and Siri, about a guy who is addicted to his cell phone. His new phone includes a service called Jexi, voiced by Rose Byrne, which becomes his life coach and personal assistant. But when he finally learns to move on to a life without his phone, Jexi freaks out and tries to keep him all to herself. Adam Devine stars, with Alexandra Shipp, Ron Funches, Charlyne Yi, Wanda Sykes, Justin Hartley, Kid Cudi, and Michael Peña. This starts out pretty fun, but it gets really dumb by the end with bad jokes.

Well, now you have the chance, thanks to “Jexi.”
But don’t worry, “Jexi” isn’t some erotic thriller featuring a phone AI.

Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale Set For ‘Medea’ At New York’s Bam; Adaptation Taps True-Life Murder Case
Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale will star in Simon Stone’s contemporary rewrite of the Euripides’ tragedy Medea at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in January.
Originally staged in 2014 by Amsterdam’s International Theater Amsterdam (formerly Toneelgroep Amsterdam), Medea will pair real-life couple Byrne and Cannavale, with additional cast to be announced.
Stone’s adaptation of the Medea story uses the true-life crime case of American Debora Green, who poisoned her cheating husband and killed two of her three children in 1995. The adaptation played London’s Barbican in 2019, where it starred Marieke Heebink and Aus Greidanus Jr.
Byrne, whose performance on FX’s Damages earned her an Emmy nomination, is currently in production for FX’s limited series Mrs. America, the nine-episode drama in which she plays Gloria Steinem (set for a 2020 premiere). She’ll next be seen in comedy Hostile Makeover (formerly Limited Partners) opposite Tiffany Haddish and Salma Hayek...
