Watch the trailer for Season 2 of “The Bear”:

Marc Forster’s dramedy A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks, is doing solid business at the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday box office in a much-needed win for adult-skewing movies.
The Sony release, playing in 3,802 theaters, earned a better-than-expected 15.3 million over the long weekend, enough to beat new wide offering Plane, an action pic starring Gerard Butler. Otto expanded nationwide after starting out in select theaters at the year-end box office. It earned an A Cinemascore on top of strong reviews.
Plane, from Lionsgate, launched to 12 million for the four days from 3,023 cinemas. The movie, earning a B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers, also came in ahead of expectations.
Both films are drawing most of their strength from consumers over the age of 45.
The two movies are looking at fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Holding at No. 1 is James Cameron’s powerhouse Avatar: The Way of Water, which grossed a rousing...

The second weekend of January saw another four-day holiday weekend to celebrate the life and work of the late Martin Luther King Jr., and things continue to do well at the box office with a number of strong films.
As expected, James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” remained on top, bringing in an estimated 31.1 million over the three-day weekend (down 32) and a projected 38.5 million for the four-day weekend. That helped Cameron’s movie cross the 570 million mark, which puts it ahead of Disney’s 2019 “The Lion King” remake, as it heads towards the 600 million milestone. Disney now has 16 of the 20 all-time highest-grossing movies domestically.

A24’s The Whale crossed the 11-million mark in week six as it jumped to 1,500 screens from 835 as the Brendan Fraser-starrer and other contenders continue to tweak theatrical runs through awards season.
The film, which received a PGA nomination for Best Motion Picture this week along with SAG noms for Fraser and co-star Hong Chau, grossed 1.45 million for the three days weekend and 1.8 million for the four days, including Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. Former action star Fraser, who plays a morbidly obese, reclusive English teacher, is no. 8 at the domestic box office with a cume of 11.1 million.

Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.
“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.
In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

The first sign that something’s not quite right in director Nathan Frankowski and writer Ed Alan’s collaboration, The Devil Conspiracy, appears in the awkward title itself: an apostrophe and “s” appear to be missing. The “the” also appears to be superfluous. Either way, something feels off even before the title appears on the screen to announce a biblically themed sci-fi/supernatural action-thriller remix. For all its warts and imperfections, The Devil Conspiracy deserves credit for its ambitious scope, energetic direction, and go-for-broke mishmash of ideas, some shockingly intriguing, others shockingly awful, and the remainder somewhere in between. The Devil Conspiracy opens with a seemingly familiar retelling of the War in Heaven, the fall of Lucifer by the sword of...

Stop me if you've heard this one. A biotech company that also happens to be a devil-worshipping cult has been cloning famous historical figures and auctioning them off to wealthy bidders. The clones are still kids and in some cases babies, which means for a huge amount of money, someone can get their very own toddler Stravinsky or baby Michelangelo. Kind of like "Clone High," but evil.
But here's the thing: cloning these historical geniuses isn't the cult's endgame. They plan on stealing the Shroud of Turin and using the blood stains on the supposedly holy artifact to clone Jesus Christ himself. But wait, there's more. Not only does the cult want to clone Jesus — they want to use the clone baby as the host for Lucifer himself. Yes, Satan is real, and so are angels, and the battle between Heaven and Hell is about to come to Earth!

Plot: A cult steals the Shroud of Turin for wicked purposes.
Review: The Devil Conspiracy almost feels like someone saw Rosemary’s Baby and said “I can make that considerably more European.” The idea of a cult coming together to ensure the birth of the anti-christ isn’t exactly a groundbreaking concept. But they flip that on its head in an interesting way and I can’t say enough good things about how they pull it off. The film constantly knows its place, never trying to do too much. This is a cheese-fest with a fresh coat of paint. And that’s not really a bad thing.
The film is brimming with religion but even as a non-religious man, I never felt overwhelmed by it. They take every aspect in such a “Hollywood” way that even the most devout Atheist should be able to watch with ease. In fact, it actually...

After a great start to the New Year, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend offers another four-day weekend, which has often been the best week in the month of January to have a substantial hit. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Three years ago, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for “Bad Boys for Life,” a movie that opened with 73 million over the four-day weekend. Two months later, Covid hit and movie theaters shut down, allowing that buddy comedy to become the biggest hit of 2020 with just 204.5 million in North America.
Even before that, this holiday weekend has seen sizable hits, including Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” in 2015 and the original “Ride Along,” starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, a year earlier.
Going into the weekend, most may just have to accept that “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “M3GAN” will likely remain the #1 and 2 movies,...

January has, historically, been a pretty bad month for the box office, even in the best of times. It was often used as a dumping ground for studios to release typically terrible movies, so expectations have usually been pretty low in the New Year. But this first weekend of new releases in 2023 gave us plenty of reason to be optimistic.
Yes, "Avatar: The Way of Water" led the way once again, topping the charts for the fourth weekend in a row and adding another 45 million to its total and sailing past the 1.7 billion mark worldwide. More importantly, James Cameron's blockbuster sequel dropped just 33.2 week-to-week and is holding like gangbusters. It's here to help prop up a usually bad month. Fortunately, though, a pair of new releases in the form of Universal's "M3GAN" and Sony's "A Man Called Otto" both did far better than expected. Let's dig into the numbers,...
