Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)
If only it had a better screenplay
I admire Rodriguez and his originality but this one was hard to make it all the way through. I liked the vivid color and some of the great action scenes and quirky humor, but the story dragged and seemed a tad convoluted.
I also didn't see the need for the sadistic portions -- they didn't add one thing to the movie for me. I don't mind violence in the right context, but the mentions and brief scenes of torture were unnecessary. They seemed forced and creepy in a movie that I wanted to be more cartoony like the previous two were.
Tigerland (2000)
Bleeding Heart Military Farce
I was shocked by the ridiculously unbelievable plot of Tigerland. It was a liberal's fantasy of how the military should be. The dialogue was difficult to swallow along with the silly things Colin Farrell's character was allowed to get away with by his superior officers.
I kept thinking, "Hey, there's a reason why boot camp is tough. It's supposed to condition soldiers for battle and turn them into one cohesive unit. There's no room for cocky attitudes and men who won't follow orders." I was rooting for Bozz to get his butt kicked because he was such a danger to his fellow soldiers. I would not want to fight alongside someone like him in war because he was more concerned with people's feelings than with doing what was necessary to protect his unit.

Phenom (1993)
Quirky and not too bad
The premise for the t.v. show "Phenom" was actually pretty original but the show was not particularly amazing. It was just ok. What I found myself tuning in to see was the older brother character played by Todd Louiso. He was neurotic and funny, not to mention much less gifted than the main character (played by Angela Goethals). He was a very original character for a sitcom. I was pleasantly surprised to see Louiso pop up recently in "High Fidelity" as one of John Cusack's record store employees. Louiso and Jack Black were great together! Check out "Phenom" if it's ever on t.v. for Todd Louiso.
