Take Me to Dinner (2014)
Better as a stage production than a movie
Caught an early screening (well, the local gala premiere or whatever you call it) of this movie when it first came out last year.
Without giving too much away, it's about an assassin who wants out of the business when he found love and asks his fellow assassins to take him out for his last dinner.
As a movie, I thought the pace was a little slow, especially the first two-thirds. Apparently I wasn't the only one, as some people walked out halfway through the movie. The pace only picked up in the third act. So yes, you should stay for the entire movie.
If this was a stage production, I would be fine with it; as a movie... well, it won't be everyone's cup of tea.
Kopitiam (1998)
If you see it on TV, WATCH IT!
It's been off the air so long, I only have fond memories of it. It's one of those quality local English sitcoms I used to watch as a kid. Also love the theme song, Empty Decorations, by Indecisive (which you can find online).
I'm not sure how well the regional humor translates outside Malaysia/Singapore, but it was funny - there was some shipping (long before the term came to play now) going on between two of the characters, effeminate hairstylist Steven and the snotty lawyer from Singapore, Susan. .. Other characters include mama's boy Joe, and long-time customers of said kopitiam, Uncle Chan and Uncle Kong.
Long story short, if you ever come across reruns of this, WATCH IT!
Under One Roof (1995)
What great memories...
Wow, I never expect this show to go beyond Singapore/Malaysia - who knew it was shown in these other countries even with such specific regional references and humor.
I was in primary (elementary) school when it first aired in the 90s, and it was pretty funny for its time and for a cross-border program (I think the only reason it was shown on Malaysian TV was because a Malaysian was in it). I still remember the singalong version of the theme song (which serves to introduce the cast) even now, 15 years later :P
Sure, Ah Teck starting his stories the same way in the last third of most episodes can be cringe worthy, but don't your parents say the same things the same way? Just saying.
I haven't seen it since it went off the air - pity there's no DVD set :( -; I've only found an episode or two on YouTube.
Priest (2011)
Priest - just so-so for me
Attended a preview screening on a Tuesday night, where there was security (phones and other potential recording gadgets are held until after the movie variety) involved. I went in not having read the source material, but already knew the gist of, thanks to Wikipedia.
As an anglophile, I don't have problems with Paul Bettany and neither did I saw Legion, so I pretty much went into this with "fresh" eyes, as they say.
I found myself giggling through parts of this movie that I can't quite explain why. Perhaps it's just that lame.
Some of this movie you can see a mile away if you watch enough movies or television shows.
As someone who's not really a fan of vampire movies, I thought this was just alright, but I wouldn't pay to watch this. I was also glad that the screening I attended wasn't in 3D.
If you like other vampire movies, you might want to check this out.
