Broadchurch: Episode #1.4 (2013)
Worst episode of an elite show
I love this show. The acting is sensational especially Olivia and David. The mystery in a small town is always amazing, all the secrets of this idyllic small town coming out to reveal everyone is damaged and has trauma.
However, the friends and family dinner, and the mom's entire arc this episode is bad fantasy. She decides to throw her family into the public eye, that's fine...but with no thought, no background on the reporter doing it and not consulting with her best friend and lead local detective!? Really?
She goes from completely rocked by this tragedy early on to very quickly calm and measured? That dinner is outrageous. People do not have this jolly meal and laugh with a small candle by the photo of the dead child, when there's no leads, suspects or helpful evidence. The Moms just fine. Her acting was always the weakest in the series and her writing is really inconsistent but the dinner was a horrible choice that provides nothing of value except Jack (Walder Frey) confessing to his past while denying any wrong doing while handing over the kids cell phone (that somehow hasn't died in over five entire days) to clear the air? Everything else from this episode is very strong but the mother's plot and the dinner are 2 out of 10 for me.
Civil War (2024)
Not worthy of the big screen
The trailer makes this seem like an essential movie theater experience, but it's not. Whether you end up enjoying this movie or not I think you will agree it's not something that needs to be seen in theaters to enjoy this. I did and it felt like a waste of money. Not because I didn't like it, but because it's not enhanced by the big screen outside of about 6 minutes. This is not the movie the trailer shows, which I think the studio did on purpose because what the film actually is isn't marketable. It's a movie about being a photo journalist and how numb it can make you. That idea set in the real world would've been powerful but it's in a fictional war that makes absolutely zero sense and you won't get an answer to what happened to start this war.
Its a movie that has less Nick Offerman screen time In the film than he has in the trailer. Jesse Plemmons one big scene, only scene is the only part of the film that feels intense and scary. And it's only so good because his acting is always unique and powerful.
The truth is I'm not sure it's a well directed movie, and it's definitely not a well written movie.
The Dynasty (2024)
Don't believe the 8.9
I'm sorry but there is no way this documentary has a genuine rating of 8.9. Who is this for? It's not for football fans, or even sports fans. It's closer to real housewives of The Patriots. They never focus on the defense really or offensive line which doesn't even get mentioned. It's so clearly a hit piece documentary against Bill. It props up Kraft to this genius for taking a huge risk lol hiring the architect of the best defense of the Giants and doing revolutionary stuff in Cleveland, just didn't have the support or players. Then it puffs Brady up more than needed, the truth about Tom is brilliant enough, why make it fiction. Tom Brady Sr being the second lead in the episode about the Cassell year is absurd. They should've had the balls to call it Kraft and Brady not Dynasty. A team based on doing your job and being a team not an individual is the most selfish documentary I've ever seen.
Andor: One Way Out (2022)
Top five episode of any show
This goes up with the great The Wire Pilot; the best breaking bad, peak Thrones early season, and some awesome Star Wars vibes. This show really is the best of modern Star Wars. All rebellions in history will always have the sin eaters who make sacrifices or are just unhinged and they do the dirty work that history ignores or suppresses. When dealing with liars you must be dishonest, and when fighting evil you gotta walk in the darkest corner of the galaxy. The speeches in this episode especially the bridge monologue is maybe my favorite 12 minutes of television in five years. The way it was so subtle and passionate but realistic and not overblown was shocking. Love this show but this is THE episode.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Yes. Its a 10/10.
I reserve ten out of tens for two very unique circumstances. The first is they do something so revolutionary with the craft, acting, and writing that it just blew me away. Godfather 2, Oldboy the original, 12 angry men, Jurassic Park. It can cover a wide range.
The other time, the only ever time I give a movie a 10/10 is when it gives you the best possible version of what type of movie it is you agreed to watch. This is the best Marvel movie ever made. Not the biggest or most expensive, but the best movie. The espionage, spy craft, fight scenes, action and heart in the movie is pitch perfect.
Casting Redford in this role when they are giving thanks for his spy thrillers of his past is chef kiss.
Hope this helps I don't want to spoil anything just encourage it.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
Capture the Flag
My title refers to the capture the flag battle in episode 2. You have to just get to that for the magic to click a little. This is made for a younger audience as are the books. It doesn't match the adult tone and prestige of Stranger Things season 1 but it has a lot in common with Harry Potter one, with less Oscar level adult actors.
However I read the books in my thirties and am watch the show as an adult. The books are kind of incredible in an embarrassing way a little haha. The show takes a little getting used to if you are a book reader or not because its faithful to the books in feel not exact details. But the real reason it takes a minute to adjust is the kids are just very young. Young actors age and show it so fast that you have to start young and I respect that. The kids have some charm and I think improve as it goes and will be better each season which will be awesome and when it likely will be a big show.
The important things for this show are the core 3 kids, Luke, Chiron, and Mr D are really good choices and they have awesome chemistry. Jason Mantzoukus is the perfect Dionysus from the books and he actually is Greek! He captures the snarky, bitter, funny, and with a tiny tiny glimmer of his care for these demigods even though he hates his life with diet cokes.
Bodies: 'The World Is Yours' (2023)
For the acting
This is probably the "big" episode in the series. But the acting really stood out to me. This show in my opinion cost it's self a much better score in the first half of the pilot and much of the 1941 stuff. The music in the pilot and many of 1941 is just the wrong tone for the show.
I think this episode was my favorite because I knew how it would end based on everything and the episode name. But even knowing how it would end in the episode I still loved how it all weaves together. I know what this show is and who made it but it's an enjoyable hang and has some very awesome moments in every episode for at least a big scene.
A Murder at the End of the World (2023)
Flawed, captivating, unique. Let's see how it ends.
Before I review I am writing this after only seeing 5 episodes. I will declare I think Brit Marling and anything she's involved in writing and creating is going to be suspenseful and shocking. I also think if she wanted to, she could easily be a huge actor but I respect her vision and execution, always...
This show has some really fascinating stuff going on, much more than a whodunnit. The performances are better than the show which is really interesting. The issue I have is that the main character seems WAY to trusting at the resort, but she should be on high alert from even before the murder in the title happens. After it's a little frustrating but it still is impossible to not get sucked in.
The main issue I have heard people mention is the past flashbacks are elite and the present timeline is pretty good but if the mystery isn't handled well in the end the show will feel like a large waste of time.
Bosch: The Sea King (2017)
Great season, love seeing Bosch get more depth
My only gripe is I wish Rudy was sticking around as a antagonist. I really can't wait for Maddie to keep gaining reps and improving her acting which is really outstanding already. The one thing that was missing the first two seasons was the dynamic of her living with him. He's not the most likeable guy, he's pretty selfish because he believes it's for the greater good a la catching murderers. But the show is extremely likeable. Jerry, Crate, Barrel, and Grace feel really close to real cops. And Santiago was amazing, I heard Tarantino talk about how one actor he thought deserved way more respect and roles was Paul Calderon. Although I don't think he's elite, for being a one season cop on a middle budget show like Bosch is insane.
I'll will say this in case you guys look at this stuff...the episode is not 1 hour and 20 minutes but it's 53 minutes.
Loki: For All Time. Always. (2021)
Top 3 Marvel Experience
Man this is really peak MCU for me. It's Winter Solider, Infinity War, and this episode. The sad thing about Marvel is they created the perfect villain with the perfect casting, and this show was the best TV marvel experience, only thing close for me was Daredevil tv at its peak like Season 2 with Punisher. The idea that Loki finds himself a puppet in another universe threatening situation, but in a fresh way is remarkable. It also feels like an 80s detective comedy, with a romantic storyline that is so delightful and dimensional. I really wish a lot of things after this didn't happen obviously but this was a perfect set up that mixed the TV and movies.
Mr. Mercedes (2017)
First Season is a hard 8.5
This show is very hard to review because it genuinely becomes an entirely different show after the first season. Season's two and three move into a more traditional Stephen King style, while season 1 is the classic retires gruff detective no kind of a PI being haunted by that one case. And the killer communicating with him isn't anything revolutionary, but the two leads are awesome and the supporting cast is really charming and perfect.
Season 2 and 3 are really enjoyable but they are two screen seasons, meaning it's best to watch while doing a puzzle or exercising while the first season is so captivating you don't want to miss anything. Hope this helps.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
We Know Why People Disliked this.
I haven't read one negative review that isn't someone mad it's not in the video game but everyone loves the deviations and expansions in other ways that do not involve two gay men finding each other and creating paradise in the apocalypse. If you only want main plot, ripped right from the game then I do not know why you'd watch it so feverishly if it's just the exact same thing. Graphics are good enough in video games that it feels real enough to feel like a story. I really wish people understood that these episodes are what critics and a lot of HBO fans love and if you don't like it because you thought it was ridiculous or unrealistic then I'm here to listen but disagree. But this seems like a loud and active internet community making this seem like it's the worst episode when it's IMO maybe the best one episode side story since Breaking Bad or Sopranos, it's brilliant acting and bittersweet.
The Flash (2023)
The perfect example of a true 5.
Is this movie atrocious and the worst superhero movie ever? No but it is one of the worst, but it's still entertaining. Do the flashes powers make sense and translate visually in this movie? Nope but it is visually interesting. Michael Keaton is great for the scenes with decent to above average scenes like the kitchen but he's also cringe when he says the famous line from Batman 89. The jokes do not all land but some of them are fun, and Ezra is a really good actor but the dialogue is not great but the plot is actually pretty clever and classic. Does it do fan service like stuff at the end and the Superman stuff? Absolutely. But as a movie it's just a solid 5 which is fine but for what it could've or should've been it's bad.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Really fun action, but John Wick isn't wolverine
I'm very confused by the ratings for this movie. It was super fun and had some really cool world building but John Wick getting hit by 100 cars and bouncing up, using his jacket like it's Vibranium, and effortless shooting through the full armor of villains was fun but absurd. The gun trick at the end was really obvious, like how would that person not realize John didn't fire? The sound editing and the angle of the camera make it very easy to see all this. I do not get why this is getting rated higher than other Wick movies. One was small budget and really clever and tight, and 2 was bigger and more action but still realistic. 3 gets a little more absurd but by the stair scene in the 4th movie it's like a DC movie because it's too dark for marvel.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
The Best Medium for Horror is now TV
I love horror movies and books about the topic. I was always quite frustrated by most of Stephen King's adaptations, even the great horror movies like The Shining, Misery, and Parts of the more recent IT movies. But they have to drift so far from the source material because the time constraints of a film and lack of character growth. This show lets you live with all the characters even the ones who are now dead, and builds the house in a slow burn creating a lot of tension and letting the mystery hang for episodes. The way they handled the Red Door room, the mother's descent into madness and the impact on the brother's addiction are unique to this show. I truly hope they one day give this style and approach to IT so it finally can include all the small moments. To me this is the best horror movie/show made in the 2000s, and consider it in the same category as The Shining, The Thing, The Exorcist, Halloween, and Scream. Some of the aforementioned movies have a lot of flaws and haven't aged well the cultural impact and movies that came in reaction to these are undoubtable. I hope more of these get done by the correct people but I'm concerned because Bly House was so disappointing.
