Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood (2023)
A New Vision of something Familiar
So yes it's going to give off Star Wars vibes very quickly, with that being said-nothing's original so enjoy watching fun slow-mo action scenes, some world building, and an interesting ensemble of rag tag characters.
I won't say that this didn't come with its own amount of flaws (which hopefully get resolved by the directors cut) so I'll just judge this version for now. It definitely would've worked better as a series as we don't get enough backstory for some of the other members of the team. There were some scenes that really could've used some explaining or maybe just should've been cut entirely.
Parts were a bit rushed but overall I think if you go in knowing that it's a Snyder film and it's going to be what it is then you'll get some enjoyment out of it.
The acting in my opinion wasn't necessarily over the top but if some scenes weren't rushed than or if there was just more backstory then they would've connected to the audience more.
Again, he wasn't trying to retell a rated R Star Wars but drew inspiration heavily from "Seven Samurai" and "Heavy Metal"
Oppenheimer (2023)
Don't Believe All the Hype.
Technically speaking the movie is great. Special effects, the score (even though it was blaring for no good reason), acting, etc. But this film feels like it was made by AI for directors. There was zero heart involved.
I want to say that Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors out there by far one of the most talented, no one can take that from him. His movies convey such emotional storytelling. However, if you're expecting this movie to be about the making and aftermath of the atomic bomb-strap in for what feels like a five hour film about trials.
The most annoying thing about this film was how it was mis-marketed. The trailer had us all thinking this was going to be about the making and dropping of the bomb. Big BOOM, special effects, woo! No. What we got was three different timelines mainly focusing on various hearings and why the US should trust Oppenheimer. There was just so much information to take in and Nolan should've just made two separate films.
Cillian Murphy's acting was decent but you don't get that he's truly torn up about the matter as much as he should be. RDJ just plays himself. Florence Pugh's character had no depth or development whatsoever. We're supposed to be upset when she dies and emphasize with Cillian Murphy but the movie failed to show us her importance or be emotional invested in her character. There really wasn't any remarkable scenes that stood out from anyone in the cast.
This was a waste of a ticket and honestly I should've just waited to stream this and went to see Barbie again.
PS-there will be discussions and you will not understand a damn thing. Those are your bathroom breaks. Your welcome.
The Idol (2023)
Of all the shows to cancel....please let this be one
You know how not everyone can do EVERYTHING...they really should've told that to The Weeknd.
Aesthetically it's like they were trying to go for a mix between Euphoria and A24 and it just falls flat.
Lily Rose Depp is trying her best with this poorly re-written script and all the side characters are just bland.
This just feels like a sad attempt to be edgy and provocative with no substance.
The only thing entertaining about this show was watching all the TikTok's talk about the behind the scenes drama.
HBO MAX really shelved Batgirl from ever being shown but in turn releases this pile of crap?
Sweet Tooth (2021)
Worth a binge
To be honest I really went in not hopeful and thought this would be another young adult show where the writing is bad and the young actors are even worse but this was really enjoyable to watch.
Pros:
-Pacing was decent enough and the CGI isn't overdone.
-Based off an underrated DC comic and is believable enough when it comes to explaining certain plot points.
-Cast was enjoyable and it's nice watching new faces
Cons:
-Does occasionally follow some typical tropes to further along the story and can kinda feel cheesy at moments
-From what I heard it's different from the comics (can't say as I've never read them) but if you're a die-hard then be warned.
All in all this was a fun watch and they're still trying to figure out their age demographic and how to truly navigate their rendition, but I'd say give it a shot.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Highly boring and very disappointing
First off, no I have not read the book and hope to god that they're far better than this waste of a Netflix original. The show throws alot of information right off the bat which usually wouldn't be an issue and I understand they're combining 2 books into one season, but it just drags on and on that I couldn't care less about ANY character or anything that was going on in general. The main conflict doesn't feel drastic whatsoever. The only reason this is getting any good reviews is the fact that it's appealing to a younger generation, and that half the actors are pretty.
Very unoriginal and derivative, everything in this show has just taken ideas from other widely popular titles. Please save yourself from spending 8 excruciating hours (though it'll feel like 50 hours) and watch anything, I mean ANYTHING else.
Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Pretty Enjoyable
So if you're expecting something like Invincible or The Boys, this isn't like those shows at all. It's alot more tame and less gruesome or gritty like those shows but it's still a really good watch. There are some slow moments and a few plot holes but no show is perfect. It also leaves off on a really good cliffhanger that could help expand this show more. The parents and their backstory is what really helps drives this show, their kids however aren't the best. The son is rather bland and the sister is in my opinion annoying but it still kept my interest.
The acting isn't over the top. Production and visuals were fun to watch as well. I think in all honesty that the show has so much to expand on and needs to be given a chance.
The Devil All the Time (2020)
No country for old men meets place beyond the pines
An intense film and yes it's a long movie but it has good reason to be. There's so much that happens in just one scene that'll have a callback later so before you're thinking of skipping around-just give it a chance.
Going in without having read the book I was expecting either racist or some creepy backwoods "Deliverance" scenes and I can say there isn't any thankfully, just a rather odd spider scene.
The entire cast truly shine in this film and yes the accents, depending on who you ask are hit or miss but it didn't put me off to the film.
All in all, just ignore all the teens giving this a poor review just because they wanted to watch Tom and Robert and not look up what the movie was actually about. They had amazing performances and have broken out of their static roles. I didn't think the movie was pretentious or lacked subtext. At its core this movie is about protecting those you love while also struggling with faith.
