The Death Collector (1976)
Not bad at all
This is not the best movie in the world, however, it does come in handy when one is looking for a way to waste time. For a cheesy 70s lowbudget mafia flick, it covers all the bases it needs to and nothing more. It doesn't need to. The best way to view it is to not expect much. This way you will be surprised at how decent a film this really is. The plot is simple. The guy becomes an enforcer for the mob, crosses his boss and his boss comes after him. The acting isn't great but it's far from terrible and the action sequences, while sometimes laughable, are really not too shabby. I would love to get more films like this. They are just very hard to find. Lowbudget cheese doesn't always make for a bad film.
Bleacher Bums (2001)
An inaccurate representation of baseball fans
One look at this movie and you will realize that none of the actors involved have ever been to a sporting event before. The acting is so p**s-poor you will be left with a urinary tract infection after watching it. I know some of these people really can act, but under Saul Rubinek's direction they all look like a bunch of hacks. The story itself is boring and nonsensical. The final product comes off as a putrid translation of a terrible play. People's problems cannot all be solved in the span of one baseball game. If they could be solved as quickly as they are here, it wouldn't be called life that we are living. It would be The Cosby Show. Rubinek should stick to stinking up the screen with his acting performances and leave directing up to someone with a little more talent. Where are you, Yakov Smirnoff? 1 out of 10 stars
Mekagojira no gyakushu (1975)
Don't bother renting this
When I got this I was pretty excited. The rematch everyone was waiting for between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla was here! Unfortunately, this movie does not live up to its hype whatsoever. The story is patheticly dull and the fight at the end is just nothing to look forward to. What makes this worse is that this is the final directorial effort from Ishiro Honda, by far the greatest of all the Godzilla directors. While this movie clocks in at a slender 78 minutes, the more you see of it the more you realize how pointless the whole affair was. Quite possibly the only Godzilla movie worse than this is the horrific King Kong Versus Godzilla, just not by much.
Masterminds (1997)
not quite Toy Soldiers
Yet another movie where the misfit juvenile delinquent is actually a brilliant strategist. Don't get me wrong. The movie is okay, I even gave it a 7, but it is lacking. The casting was pretty good with the exception of Annabelle Gurwitch, who in my opinion should retire and ask for a refund from S.A.G. I was left with a lot of questions after watching this movie, like Cactus-5, but I dismissed them as this is a teen movie and they generally don't make much sense. If you watch this movie and think it's ok or even garbage, then I recommend you watch Toy Soldiers. This movie is remarkably similar to that one but not nearly as good. I know this next statement will get me a bit of flak but in my opinion after the X-Men films and Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series (NOT the films), this is the best Patrick Stewart has done.
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (2001)
Great movie!
This movie has it all: Jesus, lesbians, transvestite, singing, dancing, kung-fu and Santos the great Mexican masked wrestler. It combines all of these elements into an original idea that truly works. A great movie that I highly recommend. 8 out of 10
