La chimera (2023)
It was .... ok
Solid premise, acting from the lead (at points he and it reminded me of the kind of film you might have seen Donald Sutherland in in the 70s) and a number of individual scenes that were compelling and held your attention (in the tomb by the power plant, the railway station squatter house of women and children, the bookending train scenes). It's all the inbetween that I struggled with ... and I read a review that described it as a comedy? Any comedic elements I found a bit naff. At points it reminded me of "The Last Wave" (but that's a much much better film), and at others of "Memoria" (also at turns compelling and repelling). Interesting moments but at parts a real trudge.
Faraway Eyes (2020)
There's a good film in there somewhere. It came
There's a good film in there somewhere. It became much more alive once the female character came into the storyline, the scene in Central Park and the scenes after were well played and engaging, thanks to the skills of the two leads, and felt like something from a completely different film compared with first scenes of the movie. This section showed it potential - it also looked great - I really feel the film just needed a ruthless script editor, to be 30 minutes shorter, and have lots cut except some (tonally improved) early scenes to set up the premise, peripheral characters cut except the main two characters, keeping the stalking sub-plot. But hey, my opinion only and I still enjoyed it as a whole.
The Time Traveler's Wife (2022)
What a hot mess
This show is wild. Everyone tries hard acting wise but it's a battle with the source material. The issue is the storyline is inherently creepy (but why didn't we all realise this in the early 2000s?). There is the big issue that the main characters don't really seem to even like each other ... which is understandable considering the fatalism of being locked in a life with no option of your decisions actually being able to influence anything. The production values are a bit b-grade - honestly I'm 42 and Theo James's "aging make-up" to make him look 42 was frankly depressing. I think if you look at this as not a romance, but a existential Kafkaesque horror, you'll get some enjoyment out of it. Also, Theo James has a nice bum.
Ich bin dein Mensch (2021)
Thoughtful, funny, entertaining gave me some pangs of nostalgia? regret?
Really loved this film. Funny, snappy, smart dialogue (whole theatre was laughing out loud at points), great structured story that moves along being hugely entertaining. Moments of pain and pathos (many audible sighs and oooohhs and ahhs from the audience). Great acting all round ... and the script really is close to perfect. Being naturally a slightly cynical hard to please person when it comes to films, especially "romantic comedy" (it's hard to do right! ... but is this even a romantic comedy?) it's not often I find myself so drawn in and enamoured by a film ... but here I was. Loved it! And a poignant ending. This definately deserves a wide release, and regardless, would go gangbusters on a streaming service I suspect..
