Schindler's List (1993)
List of Schindler
Schindler's List is an amazing film that shows the audience the true cruelty that occurred during the holocaust. Oskar Schindler was a true hero that secretly saved hundreds if not thousands of Jews. In the movie he is constantly trying to save more people and it shows how while surrounded by evil he understood what was right and what he had to do proving he is a hero. The imagery in this movie is one of a kind by showing brutal depictions of what happened in concentration camps; Schindler's List is not afraid to show its audience reality. While some may see its imagery as disturbing and hurtful to the overall story I see it as needed to achieve what the movie was going after. To get the point of the brutality that was going on in concentration camps across to the audience it was required to show true depictions of the events. I think this movie definitely deserves a watch to better educate you on the events of the holocaust and expand your sympathy of those who suffered through it.
Selma (2014)
The great bridge of Selma
Selma is a good movie. Not great but good. It tells the story of part of the civil rights movement that occurred in Selma with a march to Montgomery. I loved the portrayal of Selma's bridge and how it was the furthest they could go without a decision having to be made. It also shows how MLK was a young adult just like many people but one that was carrying the entire future in his hands. It showed that MLK wasn't alone and had a team backing him and contemplating what the next move should be. They spoke on how the march had many places where MLK could have been assassinated and talked about how the people backing him wanted him to live to see what his work did. We all know that this did not happen but it shows how people were trying to protect him. All in all the movie was pretty entertaining with only a few dull spots and highly educational to teach the truth about the march of Selma.
Big Fish (2003)
Fig Dish
Big Fish is an interesting movie. It feels like a fever dream that never really happened and while it can keep you entertained it makes your head hurt with all the confusion. I wouldn't recommend someone to watch this movie unless they are desperate for something to entertain themselves and even then it's a last option. This movie isn't just not good but it physically hurts to watch it. Once you have watched it you will have to keep Advil nearby for at least the next 12 hours. I can understand the overall story and see the potential it could have been but the execution of this movie is awful. The story in the middle of the main story just confuses everything and makes absolutely no sense. It has no structure and no logical explanation of what occurs. I know some people enjoy watching a movie like this but in the modern day this movie does not hold up. I wouldn't listen to the friend that suggested this movie and said it was one of the best because they were 100% lying.
Cinderella Man (2005)
Ballerina boy
Cinderella Man is a great movie set in the Great Depression and shows the differences of a man's success before the Great Depression and after. It shows the struggles normal families went through such as finding paying jobs, rationing food, and even sometimes having to send family members away. While it shows all these struggles it also has a story of a boxer which makes the movie exciting and high action. Without the story of his boxing career the movie would just be another Great Depression movie with an awful storyline but the way the movie is set up creates the perfect story that keeps the audience entertained while teaching what it is like to be in the midst of an economic disaster. If they didn't use boxing it probably wouldn't have been as interesting as if they used a different sport like soccer or baseball it wouldn't have made the movie as entertaining. The use of boxing makes the movie perfectly balanced.
A League of Their Own (1992)
A league of their groan...
A league of their own was a pretty good movie of the documentation of the women's baseball league. The movie shows the connection between the players and how they develop. There is drama between the characters with some of the main players, the sisters, which is one of the only things keeping the movie up into mediocrity. Overall, there isn't much heart in the movie, it just feels like a movie that lacks the ability to keep the audience entertained which is the main purpose of movies in the first place. It has a story but one that is straight forward there is almost no action and the only high energy scenes are when they're actually playing baseball. I will say the final game was one of the best accomplishments the movie actually had. I loved the high energy gameplay with bouncy music backing it up and the biggest standoff in the movie between the sisters. Overall, the movie could be entertaining to some but would it be to you?
Ray (2004)
Cay Rharles
Ray is overall an alright movie which inspired many other musical movies of singers. While it did leave lots of room for improvement for being a pioneer in the greatness of historical movies of singers it was great. It showed hardships of his life and how they affected him personally especially the fact that he had to overcome life as a blind man. He stuck with his mother's words of never letting someone make him a cripple but did hinder himself by taking part in hard drugs. While many may think that the movie painted him in a bad light, in reality it told the truth of his extraordinary life as a black blind singer during a time that the country was going through racial reform. I learned many things from the movie as well such as popular songs I had no idea he had written and a new form of music entirely, soul.
Walk the Line (2005)
Walk on the spine
Walk the line is an alright movie, while I expect the title to have some to do with the actual movie it doesn't make it very clear besides singing a song once or twice about it. The movie shows the life of famous singer Johnny Cash and goes through his drug issues and his romantical drama. I don't like how the movie shows his romantic feelings through toxicity and drama but it was actually like that so I can appreciate the writers for staying factual. The movie was entertaining and showed you the true life of one of history's most famous and beloved singers. It doesn't set the movie up very well though by only showing a few minutes from his childhood and the death of his brother which doesn't come up very often in the rest of the movie which I wish was expanded on. Overall it was a good movie, just some things here and there I wish were better, definitely worth a watch.
Elvis (2022)
Elvis continues to still make bangers
Elvis is a new classic. It had everything a movie should have- well almost everything. The ending was mediocre. It wasn't an awful ending but it definitely could have been so much more. Everything else about the movie was spot on. It incorporated the history of Elvis Presley's life while making it one of the most entertaining movies I've seen lately. The soundtrack was amazing with lots of Elvis songs but new pop-culture songs at the perfect moments giving the audience a break from just Elvis. The camera work was fantastic as well, constantly moving keeping the audience engaged. I really do think this movie could have been one of the best if the last five minutes of the movie were improved. Still even with its not so good ending it was still an amazing movie that showed Elvis' life as an accurate entertaining phenomenon. Anyone and everyone should watch this movie at some point.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Saving Private Brian
Saving Private Ryan can be seen as a good movie in some eyes but not most. The entire story is based on a useless mission to save one man by giving up the lives of an entire squad of soldiers. By losing the lives of soldiers who all had mothers of their own and lives to go back to they accomplished their goal to save Ryan so he could have a family of his own and his mother wouldn't mourn as much. Keep in mind his mother was already mourning for the loss of her three other sons. The biggest film accomplishment this movie achieved was being one of the most gory war movies I've seen yet. I see this aspect of the movie as its strong suit, it shows what it was really like to be in war without any filter and for educational purposes I do feel that everyone should see the scenes of this movie. After you've seen one scene of it though you've seen them all so maybe just watch one scene of it and let it go after that.
Darkest Hour (2017)
The Okayest Hour
Darkest Hour is an alright movie. It was mildly entertaining while being very educational showing what Churhill was really like. It was only really entertaining because of Churchill's character. Before watching this movie I thought of Churchill as a very serious man who knew what he was doing and that everyone believed in him but that can't be further from the truth. While he may have been trying to be serious a lot of the time I got the impression especially at the beginning of the movie that he was not being taken seriously at all. At one point the king tells him that he sees Churchill as dangerous not because of what he does but because you don't know the next thing that will come out of his mouth. I do think he knew what he was doing but when he was elected almost no one believed in him and he was only elected over the other candidate because he had more support from the other party. Eventually he proved to Britain that he did actually know what he was doing.
Unbroken (2014)
undiscouraged
Unbroken is a movie of dedication and pure persistence to survive in war. It cuts between Louie's life leading up to when he joins the war and him experiencing the war itself. This is an effective way to capture the audience in the story. It tells a story of an olympic athletic runner and how he got into running and how it affected his experience during his time in the military. Running gets him onto a path to success when it seemed like he had no future. He started smoking and drinking at a very young age but once he started running he was great at it and put him on a better path. His dream was to run in Tokyo, Japan which is ironic because he was captured by the Japanese and put through the worst time of his life. This movie is entertaining and gives effective information of what war is like, especially what those who are captured go through.
Dunkirk (2017)
DUN DUN DUNKIRK
Dunkirk was not great to say the least. The movie tied in all the different stories together very well but was not very entertaining. It couldn't keep me excited to watch more of the movie. I think it did a great job at showing what it was like to have survived Dunkirk but if you want to watch the movie for entertainment purposes I would not recommend it. It was hard to follow the story as well. Why is there a random pilot, why is there an old man on a ship that we follow, why is there a fake soldier among actual soldiers? It doesn't do a good job of explaining anything or helping the audience follow the story at all. Some scenes are interesting to watch and sometimes even give a sense of suspense but if you don't know why that scene is happening then it takes away from the experience. I can see what they were trying to accomplish with this movie and in some ways they succeeded but overall it was a total absolute failure.
12 Mighty Orphans (2021)
12 Orphaned Mighties
12 Mighty Orphans is a heartfelt story of a football team beating the odds. It had the potential to be a masterpiece but through decisions made to make the story accurate and emotionally driven it couldn't fulfill that task from the start. With what the movie had it did the absolute best it could which still was very entertaining and insightful. I think it could have built on the coaches backstory a little more since most of it is learned through little hints throughout the movie that many might miss. Another thing that could be improved would be not to turn to showing the president everytime a solution needs to be brought to light. They use FDR as an excuse to their biggest obstacles. Keep in mind that these are just little critics that I noticed in the movie and while the movie wasn't perfect it was still really good. Definitely deserves a watch.
The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
Grapes?
Grapes of Wrath is a movie based on and filmed in the great depression. It focuses on the "dust bowl" where okies had to move to California in search of jobs and work. The movie shows how they were treated and they do this very well. They show how they get kicked out of their land and they move through the levels of severity of the camps. While they do show the history part very well the entertainment aspect is lacking. They do the bare minimum to keep the audience focused and into the movie. If you took all the camps and historical facts out of the movie it would be a confusing and uninteresting mess. This movie has potential but if killing off someone every time it gets boring is the producers idea of keeping the audience entertained it is doomed. There just needs to be for life to the movie, more story, more laughs and enjoyment. If you want to learn about what the life of an okie is like this is the perfect movie for you but otherwise I'd recommend spending your time on something better than this.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Soggy Bottom
O Brother, Where Art Thou is a movie based off of the Odyssey but doesn't seem like it at all. While based off of the Odyssey it still has its own unique story but with little hints towards the Odyssey in it. The main character played by George Clooney makes the movie. Without him the movie would be nothing but he gives an underlying sense of enjoyment and humor throughout the movie. His speech makes the movie fun too since it's a bunch of country folks walking around but he talks all fancy just adds to the humorous undertone throughout the entire movie. The movie was incredibly enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone who has time on their hands. I don't know how the movie could have been any better, I just love the way the story develops while being funny and entertaining at the same time. George Clooney with his two buddies just is a perfect trio to make for a great adventure.
Apollo 13 (1995)
Apollo the 13th
Apollo 13 is one of the best movies I have seen recently. It does everything well by showing what an astronaut has to do to train for a space mission but also builds character to where the characters in the movie seem real. It is exciting and makes me interested in the events and lives of the astronauts on board the Apollo 13. While in the first part of the movie there isn't much action but was full of suspense which made when the action did eventually happen better. When they launch on a mission, they get lost in space which leaves the audience asking, "how will they get out?" or "will they?" The images in the movie were spectacular. It shows images of the moon and the ship and describe how the astronauts desired so badly to be able to be on the moon. They had risked themselves to experience something few humans get to, and they had come up just short. While they couldn't set foot on the moon, they now have to do everything in their power to save their lives.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
It Could've Been A Wonderful Life
It's a Wonderful Life or it would have been if I didn't have to watch this movie. I will say I actually liked the first half of the movie. It felt like an old traditional movie but halfway through Potter (his competition) steals eight thousand dollars from him and doesn't get any consequences for it. He then spirals off in a rage and attempts suicide. A guardian angel shows up to save him and show him what his life would be like if he was never alive. After going on another more crazy rage he goes back and begs for his life back. When he does get his life back he celebrates and says merry christmas to everyone he sees. Meanwhile this is all very rushed. Half the movie was just setting up this but never even did anything with the previous part of the movie because the second part was rushed. The last half of the movie was scrunched into forty minutes. If you consider this a Christmas movie (which I don't) it is an awful Christmas movie. The only thing even related to Christmas is that Christmas eve was the day he wanted to die. Otherwise most of the movie wasn't even about Christmas. This movie would have been better if it ended halfway through. The main point of the movie was not entertaining, confusing, and unrelated to the rest of the movie. If I were a new watcher I wouldn't waste my time watching this and if you decide to you might as well turn it off once he loses eight thousand dollars.
A Christmas Carol (2009)
The Christmas Movie Ever
Disney's A Christmas Carol is a classic Christmas movie that many love to watch to get into the Christmas spirit. It's story is based off of the book that Charles Dickens wrote over two hundred years ago. While its story has been told many different times in many different ways Disney makes the story interesting with a unique artstyle and voice acting based on where it took place. If you don't know the story already, Disney's portrayal would be a good first impression. The premise is that at the beginning Scrooge hates christmas. His christmas spirit is at an all time low but then is visited by three ghosts. The three ghosts show him how fun he had in the Christmas past, what he will be missing out on the current Christmas and what he will end up like if he follows the path he is on. By the end his Christmas spirit is restored and he is even doing things that little kids do to celebrate Christmas.
Argo (2012)
The Argo Scenario
The movie Argo is an interesting concept that many people do not even know happened. This movie does an excellent job of getting its story out there but from an entertainment standpoint I feel like it could have been better. It felt slightly rushed with the concept but gave plenty of time to display American officials' opinion on the idea of making a fake movie to get the six out. Many officials felt that a different scenario would be better and that making a movie is risky and the movie displayed this very well. The movie also displayed well what they were doing in Iran with riots. It showed some of the violence that the Iranians were doing and how dangerous it was to do what Antonio Mendez was doing. In all the movie Argo is worth a watch but I wouldn't say it is super entertaining, it is interesting and has some funny jokes but isn't one of the best movies I've seen.
Bridge of Spies (2015)
Bridge of sighs
Bridge of spies is an alright movie of America finding a soviet spy and attempting to trade him for Americans trapped in the soviet union and east Germany. It has lots of good aspects and a nice plot of how family is affected and how dangerous and stressful it can be to take on a case such as the case of Rudolph Abel. While it does have these it also has parts that could have been improved. It needed a plot twist, maybe one where the Soviets tried to trade the wrong guy or maybe one where they refused the trade all together would have expanded on the plot and made it much more interesting. The character Pryor that was brought into the equation did make it more interesting but only a minimal amount and if the soviets refused to give him it would have made it more interesting. All in all the movie lacks interest, it's straightforward with a straightforward story where while watching you're just waiting for something interesting to happen but it never does.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
The Ridge that is Hacksaw
Hacksaw Ridge was a story of a brave soldier who would not touch a gun but was determined to serve his country and save lives. This story is a very interesting and peculiar one since most people in the armed forces are armed. The story of this brave soldier is from the life of Desmon Doss and his ideologies and past made it so the story told was interesting and entertaining. He believed no murder was rightous, not even in war, because of the biblical verses and examples in the Bible. He almost killed his brother when he was young and almost killed his father in an attempt to protect his mother. These experiences created this ideology Doss believed in and that ultimately this is what made this movie so interesting. Typical war movies usually have the same concept of building friendship and fighting the enemy but in this movie it shows how Doss was bullied and how the higher ranking officers tried to stop his goals of saving lives for his country. He did not build much friendship with anyone until they started to respect him for his heroic actions at Hacksaw Ridge. This movie is one of the best of its kind because it doesn't have much of a kind. While it is a war movie it has such an interesting concept that it feels differently from any other out there.
Red Tails (2012)
The Tuskegee Tails
The movie Red Tails is a movie about the Tuskegee Airmen that demonstrates how African Americans were treated in World War Two. It is an amazing movie and one of the best I've seen recently. It has lots of action and builds relationships between the characters as the movie plays out. Red Tails explores lots of different ideas about war including discrimination, imprisonment, and roles of officers. It shows them watching a film from their previous attacks which I did not previously know happened before watching this movie. Lots of war movies like this don't give much action or relationships but this one gave lots of action and really pulled off a war movie very well. It also gives a different insight to World War Two by primarily showing the flight aspect of it and even showing advancements in plane technology. I would recommend this movie to anyone who has time on their hands and wants to watch an amazing film.
1917 (2019)
The World War One Story
1917 is a World War One movie on the British side of the war. The movie is based on the premise of 2 best friends who are given the task to deliver a message to another stationed group. They are forced to go through many obstacles including fighting off German troops. The movie is action packed, almost every scene has some sort of action in it. They also build on emotional aspects of the characters showing what each is feeling and how they build on their relationship with each other. The movie also shows what each character is fighting for and how they have values above the war such as family and friends. 1917 shows what living life in the trenches is like and how it is terrifying fighting on the lines of a war. The movie is amazing at what it does by accurately portraying a story of World War One and making it enjoyable and suspenseful at the same time.
Harriet (2019)
The all great Harriet
The movie Harriet is a portrayal of Harriet Tubman's life and how she escaped slavery and helped the underground railroad rescue slaves as well. Harriet is an alright movie for what it is based on, it doesn't need much action because it already has underlying suspense but it has action in it just to add the cherry on top. Contrary to popular opinion I think it was a pretty good movie. It started with a very nice story line. The only complaint I would have is it was rushed towards the end. It clears up misconceptions of the underground railroad and shows how it was an organization before Harriet was even freed but they put her in a high position after seeing her capability. It had a climax of her confronting her owner after a chase scene which did feel good with the story line after what had happened previously in the movie and created a crowd pleasing resolution.
Lincoln (2012)
Lincoln the tragedy
The movie Lincoln is a historical movie that tells the story of Lincoln's life. While it tells his story and does tell it well the movie isn't that great. There is a lot of dialogue and while some is needed this movie is just filled with it. Lincoln feels like just a movie of politics and fancy men talking. While it is interesting to see how people thought back then and how they went about politics it needed more action. One of the most action packed parts that should've been in the movie, the assasination of Lincoln, didn't even show it happen or the guy after he did it, it was just his son screaming. The fact that the entire movie has this tension building up to his assasination just to not show anything about it is a let down. I understand how it could be hard to show his assasination but they could at least show Booth standing implying it happened but even if they decided to leave it out all together they needed to find some way to put more action into this movie. The end of the movie felt rushed and maybe if they left out some dialogue and added some action they could have enough time to slow down and give an enjoyable ending.
