Monkey Man (2024)
Unoriginal and full of reused cliche concepts
I think the high scores are from people with a Hindu background. They're totally biased. The entire movie is a cliche Bollywood action movie that everyone has seen a million times already. It's totally unoriginal and has rip-off fight scenes stolen from John Wick.
The first half is cultural propaganda. It's so cringy that I just didn't want to keep watching. No real character development. Just the tough guy protagonist and trying too hard to make the audience like Indian culture. Don't get me wrong, I've seen a lot of Bollywood movies. If you want to see a good Dev Patel Indian movie, go watch Lion (2016) instead.
The story is begging the audience to like the characters. The action is forgettable. I did stick to the end and left the theater feeling like I wasted hours. There are better fight movies and Indian movies out there. Don't let the high review scores fool you unless you want to waste your time and money.
I'll still give it a 2 because it's not the worst movie ever made. This is a typical forgettable Netflix movie that you would stop watching halfway through.
The Jonestown Haunting (2020)
Misleading and boring waste of time
There's nothing supernatural about this movie. It looks so low budget with bad acting that it's like an amateur attempt on YouTube. Even though this movie is boring and doesn't take advantage of the Jonestown story at all, it's not the worst movie I've ever seen. That's why I'll give it 2 out of 5.
At 60% of the movie, it becomes a bit less bad. The idiotic journalist gets a paper note from one of the inhabitants which says "Please help us.". Instead of leaving the place, notify the authorities back at home and allow a huge army and SWAT police to get there to save everyone, this guy goes directly to the cult leader to confront him with the note. This utterly stupid tactic causes his own death, which makes the movie less boring.
The movie has a runtime of approximately 1 hours and 20 minutes but the end credits uses 10 minutes. The movie is a very restricted summary of the real story, but stretched to an entire movie. There are very interesting high quality documentaries out there about Jonestown. Go watch those instead.
Terrifier 2 (2022)
Art the Clown makes the movie shine
Sienna is a likable protagonist. She's a great person and a good, protective sister to her brother. I cared about them. Both are great characters. Art the Clown is portrayed very well by Favid Howard Thornton. He's got a lot of personality without having to say anything. Even though the movie is very violent, they don't cross certain lines such as sexual violence.
There is an actual story in this sequel, which was kind of missing in the first one. Most gory scenes are relatively short. I think that in the Clown Cafe gimmick, they tried too hard. It didn't work for me. I know what they're going for, but it came across as one of those YouTube amateur projects. The scenes at high school gave a good 90's vibe, which I found great. The Pale Girl as his sidekick was a good addition to the movie.
About the gory scenes, some are too short due to time constraints. The bedroom scene was impressive. They must've put a lot of effort into it. It's obvious that Art isn't human. He regenerates lost tissue and even his lost eye. And in the end, he was born out of the victim of the first movie, with only his head being the entire baby. I think the team tried to do something creative in that scene but it felt a bit rushed.
For a gore movie, this is much better than others. Art the Clown really steals the show. Don't expect a storytelling horror thriller such as Halloween. This is a different type of movie. For its genre, this is a very good movie. I think the low scores had different expectations. This is not a Nightmare on Elm Street kind of movie. This is a movie that's similar to a Jaws and serial killer crossover. Something terrible is about to happen and only a few take it seriously.
