Under the Bridge (2024)
This series is quite well done
The crime resonates all these years later. I remember vividly when it happened. Victoria BC is one of the safest cities in our country so the crime was headline news coast to coast.
Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough deliver terrific performances. Kudos also to the supporting cast.
(For those watching and just learning about Victoria there is so much more to know about this lovely city than portrayed in the series. I live 3000 kms to the east but have visited many times.)
The crime is as heartbreaking today as it was in 1997. I have watched a few Canadian documentaries on the crime and am thankful that it is being brought to a larger audience.
Reena Verk has not been forgotten.
Beef (2023)
I watched twice before my rating of 1
I watched it back in the summertime when it first came to Netflix and it was too hot and humid to go outside. I didn't connect with it. Not relatable. The acting was contrived. I had read reviews online and just didn't understand the "hype".
I was prepared to give it a 2 star rating but I decided to wait it out because of the award predictions. Sure enough, the awards arrived! I was watching the Emmys last night and thought that surely I must have missed something.
Soooo here we are now. A different season and far too windy and cold to go outside. Instead of the air conditioning going, the fireplace is burning, and the series is just as bad as the first time I watched.
The premise is absolutely ridiculous and the actors are, in my mother's favourite word "schmaltzy". Perhaps people are being PC because of the Asian cast? I am never one to hop on a bandwagon just because of popular opinion.
Boring, unrealistic, but I tried.
Friends (1994)
I'm past it I guess
I didn't watch the television series "Friends" way back when because I was busy raising my three children (1987, 1991, 1992) so watching television was preserved for special occasions with programming worth watching.
Now that I'm a widow, retired, I have an android box, and sadly the death of Matthew Perry, I have been able to watch "Friends" from the very first episode.
I was hoping for so much more! I'm 60 years old so perhaps my age has slanted my perspective. It is slapstick silly humour.
I'm sorry for the loss of Matthew Perry to his family and friends and of all of the scenes he was the most humourous.
Is the actress Jayne Atkinson related to Jennifer Anniston? They could be Mother and Daughter.
The Last Waltz (1978)
The best music documentary ever!
Scorcese honing his skills with the most talented musicians of a generation - or two, or three.
I've probably watched this 50 times and I still am moved and every time I "catch" something new and impressive.
In one documentary: The Band, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Ron Wood.... Just to name a few.
Martin Scorsese catches some intimate moments both on stage, behind the scenes and watching now, he gave us glimpses of the future events to come for these musicians-sad and happy. I see now that he was being a truth teller for the time and foretelling the future.
Never gets old.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Too much hype
I'm á Scorsese fan, especially of the unexpected. "Age of Innocence" is the best movie of all time-no violence, no bad language, no sex. Incredible work by Scorsese! I was hoping for the same or similar with this movie.
Deniro and De Caprio give contrived performances-actors acting.
Scorcese has rarely-if ever-jumped onto a bandwagon, but he has leapt too far for this theme.
No doubt the film will make him and all involved a lot of money on the back of the true issues which are the issues du jour.
If anyone wants to experience the true Scorcese they should watch the Age of Innocence for every single minute of his excellence in film.
Priscilla (2023)
....refreshing take on the Elvis story
For years as I watched many Elvis biographies, prior to Austin and Tom, there were many biographies; I always wondered how a 14 year old girl could have her parents blessing to move into Graceland with Elvis. Sofia Coppola grasps this question and responds articulately. The same "Elvis" story being told from Pricilla's perspective intelligently and deftly.
It reminded me of my own childhood when a teacher would drop by our home and ask my parents if he could take me out for dinner. It was an honour to go out with him, nothing secret or shameful. My situation was a far cry from Priscilla's yet similar in that the man was respectful and admired and our families were very happy to be associated with him.
The actor who portrays Elvis had some big shoes to fill which he did humbly, giving the spotlight to the actress who plays Priscilla.
Sofia Coppola is an excellent director. She deserves more recognition.
House of Hammer (2022)
Unbelievably unbelievable
As I have chosen to not have any form of social media this documentary is new to me.
While it is well produced, I found the women interviewed to be obfuscating and coached in their "testimonies".
I don't believe a word they said. Their verbiage sounded scripted. Their appearances, manipulated. I've been told that I am a perspicacious individual and I believe my instincts are correct here.
I'm a 63 year old university educated female. The only movie I have seen with Armie Hammer featured is "Call Me by Your Name" which I quite enjoyed!
This documentary is malarkey and balderdash-in the kindest of words.
WeCrashed (2022)
I waited almost two years to see this!
It was worth the wait!
Jared Leto is possibly the most underrated actor these days. He is a chameleon! From The Dallas Buyers Club to the House of Gucci...he is diverse and willingly risky in his choices.
There are those who question his actions beyond his acting, but his acting is what we we review here.
He deserves a HUGE opportunity to carry a big project as there are many people who have yet to experience his acting and are only familiar with his wardrobe choices on the red carpet or his homage to Karl Lagerfeld's cat while on the Met carpet.
His acting surpasses the spectacle!
