Angoor (1982)
Can be ranked in the top 10 Hindi comedies
Excellent performances by Sanjeev Kumar, Moushami Chatterjee and above all Deven Verma who steals the show. Great work by Gulzar as usual. The song "Preetam aan milo" sung by Sapan Chakraborthy is the highlight.
Subha Sankalpam (1995)
A great movie but lacking the Vishwanath touch
A good story but the direction surprises me when I compare to his earlier classics like Shankaraabharanam, SwathiMutyam, Swarnakamalam, Saagara Sangamam etc. This movie brings back the golden combination of Kamala Haasan and Vishwanath after 9 long years and Kamal has excelled yet again. Vishwanath appears on screen for the first time and his performance was awesome. The relationship which is established between Kamal and Vishwanth makes the movie what it is. Aamani's performance is laudable (no wonder she has won the AP State Govt. award (Nandi) for the Best Actress) although she dies in the first half of the movie.
Music by MM Keeravani is excellent and maintains the tempo of the movie. All the songs add to the storyline as the 4 lyricists employed have done a superb performance by not letting the songs hamper the flow of the movie. Personally, I did not like the comedy scenes and the villains' depiction. The last part appeared as if Vishwanath has hurried up or given the direction to some assistant.
Overall, a good movie to watch at least for Kamal, Vishwanath and Aamani's performance
Sangeet (1992)
Not a regular Bollywood masala movie
I think this is the first Vishwanath Hindi original movie. His earlier movies Eashwar, Sargam etc. were remakes of his own movies in Telugu. Now... Vishwanath and Madhuri... That's what they call the right director/actor blend. I personally feel that this movie would easily ranked in 5 best performances of madhuri. Both the characters (she has a dual role) are well developed. Jackie's performance is okay. The story would not be suitable for Hindi audiences and so it bombed.
Sankarabharanam (1980)
The best Telugu movie ever
Well.. Well.. 1000 words would not be sufficient to tell even a hundredth about the movie. No kidding. The first time I watched the movie, I was a kid and obviously did not like the movie as I did not understand it. The second time, I appreciated the movie and then on I have seen the movie n number of times and every time I saw it, I see a new angle which the director wants the viewer to observe and dig deep. The music scored by KV Mahadevan is simply superb. SPB, S Janakia and Vani Jayaram have done a great job and Veturi's lyrics are a class apart. The movie had won 4 National awards which include the best movie providing wholesome entertainment, best music, best male playback and best female playback (Vani Jayaram). The song for which Vani Jayaram has won the award is not even 2 minutes in length and it is the shortest song ever to win an award in any part of the world. The award is SPB's first National award. He tuned his voice so well that it appears as if a 60-year old person was singing (He was not even 35). Another interesting aspect of the movie is that this movie has increased the tape recoreder sales in AP by 10 times. (Tape recorders were new in AP). The dialogues in the movie are excellent and JV Somayajulu (debut) has given an excellent performance.
In short, a novel story, an excellent script, superb direction, stellar performances and above all high-quality songs easily makes Shankaraabharanam the best Telugu movie ever.
