Invasion (2021)
It's just so dull and boring.
I couldn't even finish the first episode. It's just so slow and boring. I thought perhaps I should stick it out. But even more positive reviews say things like "the first 5 episodes are bad, then episode 6 onwards it's great". So you have to wade through the first "5 hours" of boredom that makes watching paint dry seem exciting, before it becomes worth watching?! I mean "5 hours!" Seriously they filled the first 5 hours with padding and if you hadn't killed yourself before that, the programme becomes watchable?! I'm thinking those who liked it and think 5 hours of rubbish before you get to the good bit is acceptable, just have too much time on their hands.
Downton Abbey (2019)
A fantastic follow on from the series.
I think it was worth the 4 year wait. It's just a shame we'll probably have to wait another 4 years for the next instalment. Let's face it given the massive money spinner this is, a second movie is inevitable.
The storyline is already setting the plot for the next film, while Mr Fellows clearly doesn't like to be predictable, you can see there are several avenues for him to follow in the next instalment. And there is enough scope for it to be bitter sweet in equal measure. I suspect we'll see a death and a marriage in the next film.
I think films are definitely the way to go though, if it were to continue as a series it would have to burn through a lot of storylines to keep up the momentum. And that would result in it becoming far fetched - you can only kill off so many key characters or have them do moonlight flits before it ceases to be shocking.
Northern Rescue (2019)
Slow
This is really slow to watch, it's probably one TV movie stretched out into a series. There is some eye candy in it, and if it wasn't for that I'd only give it a 2 star. It has good potential as a plot, but it's poorly executed. William Baldwin, is a really dull actor which doesn't help it at all. The 'rescues' are contrived and predictable and even they're slow rather than action packed. The volunteer rescue organisation seems incredibly well funded with no explanation as to how. It's almost like they wanted to set this in a coastguard station but they couldn't get permission to do so. This is fairly typical of the kind of cheesy dross you find on CBC and Hallmark aimed at a stereotypical 1950's family to sit around the TV watching on a Saturday evening - except tastes have moved on....
Life Unexpected (2010)
A strong feel good factor.
Well made and well acted. It's a shame they didn't get a third series. The pilot works really well as a stand alone episode and could have been a TV movie. It is after all a drama not a documentary, I'm amazed at complaints about it being "unrealistic". It's no less realistic that One Tree Hill, The OC, Gilmore Girls or a plethora of other similar drama series. Switched at Birth became increasingly unrealistic, but managed to survive for 7 seasons by ramming "Deaf Culture" down everyone's throats, and rode the diversity ticket.
In fairness I think it could have run for a 3rd series without starting to get silly and desperate for plot lines. But at least they managed to wrap it all up quickly at the end of the last episode.
My only real complaint would be the "Bug" character was just irritating and got in the way of the story.
