The Idol (2023)
This show is getting unjustifiably review bombed
There is no way this show should be sitting below a 7 on IMDb. Anyone can get into this but even more so if you have been close to the music industry. The weeknd plays the role of a controlling partner with purpose expertly. The lead actress plays the role of vulnerable singer with incredible poise. The plot is great so far. It is very well produced. Soundtrack is amazing. Certainly has an element of fifty shades of grey.
Overall I've just finished episode three and I'm so so glad I ignored the review bombs and made my own mind up.
Great show. Well done. I trust the executives will see the quality in this production. And the weeknd certainly has a future in acting should he choose to.
The Devil Conspiracy (2022)
An honest review
I went into this film expecting trash. I grew up in the faith and have seen many movies based on similar stories and all have let me down. This attempt clearly didn't have much budget but I was glad I gave it the hour and 45 min running time. It's not a work of art or a cinematic masterpiece however I was engaged and felt adequately rewarded for my time by the end of it. The actors largely did their part and the story, although full of holes and some really annoying characters, was told adequately and left a cliffhanger at the end which left the audience wondering if there will be a sequel.
It's a tough topic to translate into film but the base material is one of the greatest stories ever told and if a film team gets this right, it has the potential to be the film of all films!
This wasn't that however it was a decent attempt with a minimal budget and easily worth the 6 I gave it. Nice to watch a break from the norm Hollywood dribble, and take your mind to a place of angels and demons. Well done to whole team that put this together and I hope you get the return you deserve. So much so, we want the sequel!!!
House Party (2023)
Ignore the hate - it's a tribute not a remake!
I rarely write reviews but had to for this to set the record straight.
Impossible to outdo the original let's start there. I grew up on the original and the sequel and it was the soundtrack to my life!
This was what the new fresh Prince was to the original. Different but paid tribute in the right way. Funny as hell, great music, great cameos, storyline on point, I loved it. I went in not expecting anything after watching the attempt to remake how high but they nailed this. Well done to everyone involved. For one hour and 40 mins I felt like I was a teenager again. Ignore the hate, ignore the comparisons to the original, instead treat this as a tribute rather than a remake.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans (2022)
The hate is hilarious
It's a funny light hearted show that doesn't take itself too seriously but unfortunately everyone that reviews this show does, or simply hates that a woman is centre stage.... again.
I chuckled a number of times throughout the show as I have done all the episodes. No it's not the best show ever, not even close, but it's far from the worst either and it's a refreshing change from the usual MCU series.
My main issue with the episodes are their length, way too short and they should have halved rhe amount to episodes to double each episodes length. Waiting a week for a 25 min episode is by far my biggest gripe.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Not as bad as reviews say but eps are too short
The show is actually ok - in truth it's a comedy series and it is genuinely funny - interested to see where they take it. 3 episodes in and it has got better with each ep. My main issue is that the episodes are less than 30 mins long! About 25 mins in total which is ridiculous. You just start getting into the ep and then it finishes. Can't recall any decent tv show with episodes that short. They should have combined two episodes and halved the season length! So far it's better than Hawkeye and ms marvel - on par with winter soldier all be it an entirely different type of show. I do feel with the characters they have introduced that it may be a predictable storyline. I'm hoping that's not the case.
The Orville: Midnight Blue (2022)
Ignore the haters
The show never ceases to amaze me - this episode actually brought a tear to my eye and I'm a hard guy lol this never happens!
Excellent writing - hour and a half long episode, basically a feature film.
It is a brilliant show and this season has exceeded all my expectations. Well done Seth - I applaud you and all the team - keep up the great work.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Elysian Kingdom (2022)
Worst episode yet
I've loved this series up till now but this episode went too far - way too far - had to skip through the first half of it - such a shame. Hopefully there won't be too many more far fetched ones like this.
Star Trek: Discovery: Coming Home (2022)
Don't believe the negative reviews
Yes this season was slow
Yes it was the worst of the four seasons
But this is a review of an episode not the show or the season
And this episode was good. It's a shame that the season didn't hold together as well as the final two episodes. But this episode was a great climax to an over underwhelming season. They finished strong. It was true Star Trek. Undiscovered worlds, first contact, grief, loss, triumph, elation, evolution, growth, Learning.
It's a shame we never got to see if the villain made it to his destination but we have to presume he didn't.
I hope they give this show another season but if they do, they have to go back to what made the show great. The first two seasons. And let's explore more than just Michael. I think she is great but there are so many more characters to explore on the ship each having their own stories to tell,
Bel-Air (2022)
Much better than I expected
I had a low bar for this show - have been let down with a lot of tv of late and this being a remake of a cult classic and entirely changing the genre (comedy to drama) I wasn't expecting much. I watched the first episode however, and I'm really looking forward to watching the next ep. It pays homage to the original in many ways. The production value and casting is very good although I'm disappointed they didn't find a big and cuddly uncle Phil. All other main characters are similar to the original counterparts other than uncle Phil. I thought the tone was perfect, the script was clever and well paced. Overall thoroughly satisfied with the output and cannot believe this is currently sitting at 5/10. It's clearly being review bombed as if you look at the individual episode ratings they are much higher.
Star Trek: Discovery: All Is Possible (2021)
Worst episode in entire show yet
I absolutely love this show - but this episode literally added nothing to the story arc. It was a totally meaningless episode. Definition of a filler. Really disappointed in this. This season has really been a let down so far. So much scope for so much great story telling with all that has come before season 4. This just seems like a major waste of material. If it keeps going like this we may not get a season 5.
Please turn this around. I genuinely love this show!
Star Trek: Discovery: Anomaly (2021)
Excellent episode - ignore the haters
I thought ep 1 was quite slow but this one picked up the pace nicely and left a nice cliff hanger at the end of the episode with some jaw dropping visuals. I've seen all star treks and absolutely love the nee direction that show has chosen to go in. Inclusive, experimental, but still expanding horizons and. Stretching the imagination the way a Star Trek episode should. Was great to see some of the crew members get some limelight, that's prob the weakest part of the show, lol e don't know enough about them. Hopefully they explore that this season.
Overall it's a great show and this was a fantastic episode. I can only think the haters are either against inclusivity or against anything that isn't pre 2000 Star Trek. They are probably all over 50 year olds who can't break away from be formula the old school trek shows.
I have two words for them.,,, BLACK ALERT!!!!
The Wheel of Time: Leavetaking (2021)
Looks like Amazon cut back on the budget
Visually this is terrible. The fight scenes are horrible. CGI looks like something from the 80's. The Costumes were a joke, the whole episode just felt rushed. I didn't care for anyone in it. Amazon clearly cut back on the budget for this one. For a flagship series I thought they would have gone all out but this is closer to Sabrina the teenage witch than it is game of thrones. I've given it one episode. It has lost me. I won't be watching anymore.
Universe (2021)
Thank you Dr Brian Cox
What a great show. Thank you for explaining things in a way that not only scientists can understand. Adding philosophy into the mix of science and really beautiful cinematography and visual special effects. So many unnecessary hateful comments for a show that brings so much to the table for the full range of viewers who have access to this. This show is created for all not just those who are experts in the subject. If it wasn't 'dumbed down' many of us would have no interest in this. Dr Cox is to the Universe what Richard Attenborough is to Planet Earth. We appreciate you Dr Cox. Don't ever stop delivering this type of content for years to come.
The Spine of Night (2021)
Ignore the haters
This was good. Relentless pacing throughout. Original story and great voice acting. Violence with substance. Enjoyable watch and a gem amongst the void of useless rubbish put out nowadays. Glad I found it.
Night Teeth (2021)
Enjoyable brain candy
Strong performances with some nice cameos - overall an enjoyable watch that left me smiling at the end. Middle of the road film that doesn't do anything particular great or particularly bad but makes up for its flaws with stylish production and a strong cast. Ignore the review bombs and give it a watch. Decent Friday night flick - good quality brain candy.
Wu-Tang: An American Saga (2019)
Excellent
The casting is superb. Screenplay is extremely well written. I'm halfway through season 2 and they haven't even recorded the first album yet however, the story is gripping and each episode leaves you wanting more. They literally have so enough source material to do 10 or 20 seasons of this show. It's insane that no uk network or streaming platform has picked this up. Hopefully it does really well in the USA, so much so that they are forced to pick it up. The uk crowd would love it. Wu-tang was and is still is huge here especially in the over 30 age group. Closest show I've seen to this kind of quality would be the new edition biopic but that was extremely condensed story telling. I'm glad they didn't do that with this and I truly hope this show lives a long time and it gets the opportunity to tell us the stories and journeys of all the members of wu-tang clan. Special shout out to the actor playing the rza. I wasn't sure about him at first by my word has he grown on me over the course of the show. He is an actor with a bright future. If you are thinking about watching this show as a wu tang fan, music fan, or just a fan of good tv shows, go and watch it. You won't be dissapointed.
People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan (2021)
Really not funny
No mcing, no garage, no dnb, jokes not funny, lost brain cells watching this, shockingly bad - could have been so much better - at least at some stage they should have had an actual cypher or did the track on stage or something..... just wow.
Candyman (2021)
Terrible
Had high hopes for this - best part of the film was the final 20 secs - made me realise how much I appreciated the old version over this one. There was nothing scary about this whatsoever. Performances were weak. Everything was easily telegraphed. Make no mistake - this is a B/C movie.
City of Lies (2018)
The greatest film that no one ever saw....
It's criminal that this film was completed and never given a release even now, over 3 years after its due date. The story is still relevant, Netflix are about to do a big special of notorious big and this has been swept under the rug which can only lead to unsubstantiated conspiracy theories as to why - primarily around the lapd. This film could trigger the kind of social media pressure and resulting lawsuit that could bankrupt a city when you take into account biggies earning potential and the amount of wrongdoing this highlights. Johnny drop abs Whittaker were excellent. I very much see this film very similar to dark water just replacing polluted water with Christopher Wallace. Johnny depps troubles came after the release date of this film so that can't be the reason why it didn't come out, but it could be the reason it's not being released now. Go search for it. It came out on Italian blu ray only! Even biggies mum is in the film.. ah once more this case gets swept under - the truth will come out one day, I hope I live to see it when it does. The money, time and effort wasted on this film which is complete yet being held back from an audience who would love it is really upsetting.
Skylines (2020)
So bad it's good!
I have a weak spot for the skyline trilogy - this is the worst of the three but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable - the lead is great - the plot is terrible but it's skyline so I love it - say fi channel worthy but way better than sharknado - looking forward to the 4th instalment!
And I think I have a new hall pass nominee haha
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Ignore the haters
This and the expanse are the two best sci fi shows on tv. Period. Trekkies can't get over the show being focused on a story arc rather than mini self contained episodes with a loose focus on a story arc in the background. Get with the times!
Hard sci fi, great visually, Micheal Burbank is awesome, new Spock is brilliant and better than the one in the recent films. Can't wait for season three.
Season 1 was a slow burner but 2nd half was mind blowing moly good. Season 2 had everything - literally everything - only reason this gets a 9 is because of the first half of season 1..... but don't get me wrong, it was still good!
Personally this is the best Star Trek series ever, and I've seen them all.

Extinction (2018)
A poor mans Skyline
Wow, what is Netflix doing with its budget! Total rip off of skyline, and we all know how poor those films were. This makes skyline look like close encounters of the third kind. Wish I could get my 1.5 hours back. This is what happens when you watch film the day it's released before anyone's had the chance to review it. Netflix sort it out, this was sci fi channel worthy.
Sharknado level acting!
Cobra Kai (2018)
Unfathomably good!
First time ive given a 10 rating to a show in my life and I've reviewed so many it's scary that I would do this. It's faultless. Has everything, just the right amount of everything, comedy, emotion, nostalgia, homage to original, romance, plot twists, intelligent writing, great acting.... honestly this was such a feel good show.
Imagine season 1 as 10 episode reboot of karate kid 1, but with a better storyline... yes better!
I must admit, watchingrhis without having watched the originals back in the 80's would still be good viewing but would probably make it a 7/10, it's the way they tied everything in with the original and made all us 40 something's feel young again without alienating everyone else.
Real clever... well done to the team for this and really looking forward to season 2
Westworld (2016)
Second season much better than the first!
First season was slow, too heavy a Wild West plot, too focused on character development and just overall slow paced. Second season learned from the firsts mistakes and went hard from the very first ep. Watching the 1st season felt like a chore - 2 nd season I'm gripped an dcsnt wait for next ep. This could end up being the new game of thrones/lost if they do this right - keep up the good work!
