Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
Outdated by decades
Unfortunately, although long awaited, this proved to be such a disappointment as both the topics and the narratives are outdated. By that I don't mean retro or playing with nostalgia, but plain outdated. The genre isn't what it was in the 80s and 90s and the showrunners didn't get the memo. The different directors don't manage to pull off compelling stories, the atmosphere is stale and stuffy, while acting is theatrical without reason. Of course, as is with other Netflix shows, some scenes are so dark, they're barely watchable. The feelings of annoyance just grew with every episode until I gave up.
Hypnotic (2021)
Underrated
This is a thriller-lite and way better than the recent usual Netflix production. It's nicely done, the acting, the suspense and thrills, the ending, it all makes perfect sense.
Debris (2021)
Disappointed
Such a shame that the series was taken on this path because the premise and the sci fi story elements are great. But there is so much unnecessary drama both personal and between the characters. And at the same time the acting is not even believable since the connection between the main characters is non existent. I don't usually mind emotional turnovers in series but this is unnecessarily depressive and unnecessary for the storyline. Shame, it could have been much better.
Run (2020)
A thrilling thriller
Standardly awesome acting by Sarah Paulson as well as her movie daughter. A believable string of actions without many clichees, very dynamic, engaging and refreshing! I wish we had more thrillers like this.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
9 as rating for season 3 only
The first two seasons are set in the star trek universe but have little to do with the underlying star trek philosophies. This, however, only picks up in season 3 and it is marvelous to watch! A little bit of too much drama but at least we once again get to tackle the big questions in life. It was a dearly missed key part to make it a true star trek series. If you are uncomfortable watching minorities in lead roles, maybe remind yourself that we live in the 21st century and it was long overdue to have some representation.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Very awesome
2020 needed more entertaining movies like this. Highly recommended for an upbeat and fun movie night. A true adventure.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
Innovative and creative with superb acting
Plot-wise, you really won't find a similar series. It's such an innovative storyline, both the setting and the androids have such interesting characteristics. Its plot poses philosophical questions and invokes the old star trekkian feel at times, which is so refeshing. Fantastic acting!
Lovecraft Country: Strange Case (2020)
Why?
I really loved the show up to this point! I'm angry at how bad the episode was created - no real plot apart from a touch of Ruby's storyline, unnecessary cheap violence, and thoroughly inelegant. Skip this and you'll save yourself an hour of your life.
Away (2020)
Wholesome
With Away there is finally a feeling of hope concerning space travel. It's not sci-fi but a wonderful realistic portrayal of interpersonal dynamics in context of trying to achieve a great feat. It's touching and wholesome in its entirety with excellent acting and dialogue.
Underwater (2020)
Movie and popcorn night
A typical genre movie but elevated. It's what you would expect but the performances are quite good, the effects are eye-pleasing, the mystery is captivating, the thrill is there, and there is just enough innovation to the plot. And it works awesome overall - for a movie and popcorn night!
Spaceship Earth (2020)
Overwhelmingly beautiful
A very well made and feel good documentary. It's about a very smart, unconstrained, creative and yet rational group of people. They share their utopian visions of the future through their projects, a sort of "we can create and shape the world we live in", and the feeling spills over from the screen.
Queer Eye (2018)
Wholesome through and through
It's fun, it's feel good, it's educational.
I don't give out 10s on IMDb easily but I love it! This show is teaching me to feel good about myself and to understand others. And also, my house looks awesome and I dress way better thanks to the guys and Jonathan.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Atmospheric and smart
It has a slow "southern" flow, it's smart, is cocky, the acting and production are superb, and it is a wonderful treat for hot summer days.
The Expanse (2015)
An absolute diamond
As a sci fi lover I can say that this is one of the best sci fi fiction products I have ever seen. The complex universe portrayed in the first few episodes put me off at first. But, in similar vain like Game of thrones, a complex series such as these need time to lay the foundation for a complex societal and political systems to be understood and characters to be properly situated in them, and developed as the series progresses. If you would like to watch realistic speculative fiction, you have found one the best. Not only that but my girlfriend and I have sat at the edge of the couch throughout seasons 2&3 because the plot is just that interesting!
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
A silly parody of Eurovision
It's a silly comedy in the style of other Will Ferrell movies. However, if you want to really laugh out loud at times then you have to be somewhat familiar with the European Eurovision contest. Only then will it make much more sense and be that much more entertaining. This silly kind of humour is not my cup of tea and that is why my rating is only 6 stars, however the Eurovision parodic portrayal is spot on.
Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
I started watching when the rating was 10
The first three seasons were pretty great, especially season 2&3 which were excellent. Then the storyline became less thought out even though some episodes still do stand out. But the main problem is with the characters in season 4 and especially 5. The newly introduced characters aren't interesting, there is no cool story around them, the existing characters were dumbed down and became one-dimensional, and the team dynamic went out the window. They are all there in the same scene but the atmosphere is like sitting in the teachers lounge of some middle school during recess. The rating 7 is only there for the sake of the first three seasons.
Wildling (2018)
Not worth the time
The scenes are unnecessarily too long, the acting isn't convincing, the plot is predictable and yet somehow contains scenes and characters that don't add up overall.
