Nova: Black Hole Apocalypse (2018)
Repetitive and low info, the worst host.
It is very repetitive and low information, and as bad as it is, the host makes it even worse, in any aspect. I don't understand any production company in its sane mind and market scope to choose a host like this. So it is not informative nor entertaining, it is even hard to listen to the host, a total waste of the topic and the production budget.
Kampen om tungtvannet (2015)
It would be much better if condensed into a <3 hours film
I was thinking "what a good movie material" when I saw the documentary about this particular part of the WW2 history, and I was happy to find this series. The production is good, both casting and filming are unsatisfactory, especially given the facts that the true history itself and the natural environment for filming have much more to offer than the final product itself. The worst is that, it drags too long. Te history/story would make a great movie, or even a long-er movie, but definitely not a 6 hours series, it's slow and filled in with unnecessary scenes that are not even enticing nor enriching. All in all, a bit disappointed, feel as if a good movie material got spoiled.
Death Comes to Pemberley (2013)
A mixture of great production and bad scripts and even worse casting
I've always been an Austen fan since I first read Pride and Prejudice at age 9. Since then I've read Pride and Prejudice in two different languages and my favorite adaptation of it is the BBC mini series in 1995. I tried to avoid the "when death comes to Pemberley" as long as possible since first I didn't want to spoil my fondness of the original book, and second the characters on the screen shots just mortifies me. I finally watched it and although the production is good, but like another viewer has mentioned, the script is anachronistic, as if someone is trying to write a Victorian time period drama but struggling with modern and even Hollywood terms. But this is not the worst of it, to me, the worst is the casting. This is a version with finally a handsome enough Wickham, but other main characters are just good actors with great voice performance and way too disappointing and falling far short for such iconic roles. Even supporting characters are rather odd choices, I had to re-watch some of it to understand what their positions, roles and characters in it. I'm sure it's not the worst portrait for Elizabeth and Darcy (and even colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana), but they sort of ruined it.
The Paradise (2012)
Total mundane story line with unattractive characters played by uncharismatic actors
A better produced period day time soap opera, with total mundane story lines and scripts that only concern one block of neighborhood + one rich household (saved a lot on locations sets) and absolutely no higher, bigger, deeper or whatsoever meanings behind, constituted with unattractive characters played by even more uncharismatic actors and actresses. I found myself google/wikipedia it to see who are the main characters (I thought they haven't shown up yet ...) after watching 3 episodes with 85% of the lines starting with Mr. Moray, Sir. I normally like most of the English shows, especially the period ones, but this is a total "don't waste your time". The 1 star is totally for the production team, although it should not be hard considering the very limited locations/sets they used. All other parts are zero star. If you want to watch something similar, I'd recommend "North and South". Any British period drama is better than this perhaps.
Abandoned (2015)
None of them looks like being lost in the sea for 119 days ...
It's not a bad movie, the only problem is that none of them looks like being lost in the sea for 119 days. I'll take that as a production error, for instance, movies like Cast Away, Life of Pi, ... actors would gradually "look" like they've been lost in the sea for that long (skinny, tanned, sun burned, dehydrated, messy long hairs, dirty, torn clothes, ... etc..). But in the movie "Abandoned", actors look about the same from the beginning to the end (check Dominic Purcell's hair ...). Also, most of these types of movies, it will either emphasize the scientific/technical parts, or the mental/spiritual aspects of human, but this movie just very lightly grazed through any of it, and it's a movie that leaves no impact, no thoughts after.
Filthy Riches (2014)
After first episode, it's just another reality show.
I like the idea of this "documentary", and the first episode of the first season was good, I thought they were going to introduce and show more this type of jobs in the US and/or in the world. But then it's the same over and over and over, becomes just yet another cheap production reality shows that Nat Geo and Discovery franchises keep on making these days. I gave it a 6, instead of an even lower rating, because the idea is very interesting and rather refreshing, but it would be better if they talk about the same people and type of jobs in few episodes then move on, instead of making another reality show for even more than one season. It's worth to watch for couple of episodes, but then it's the same repetitive reality show.
Absolution (2015)
Can't even find a cameraman with steady hands.
I have to admit I only watched it for the first 30 to 40 minutes, so I'm not gonna comment on the movie itself, it's as bad as it can be any way. The point is, they can't even find a cameraman with steady hands, most of the shots/filming, especially those when they were just talking and/or fighting, were too close and very shaky, as if it's a hand held personal camera bring you with me type youtube amateur made video, (most of the youtube videos nowadays have better filming qualities and techniques than this), the camera just wouldn't stay still, this alone makes me feel dizzy and nauseous. I've never seen a worse camera filming in Hollywood made movies, or most main stream movies in any market.
Mankind: The Story of All of Us (2012)
About the most shallow and ignorant "history" documentary ever made
Watched this after viewing the not so bad America: the story of US. Apparently the History channel (in the US) can only handle some very short and simple, straight forward history like the one in the US. Mankind: the story of all of US is very shallow, narrow, biased, ignorant, and poorly made (yes, there are lots of reenactment, but there is no real experts in any aspect), the same as all US made "history" stuff, everything about Europeans, and throw in a little bit Egyptians, Persians, ... this and that for exotic decorations, as if the rest of the world, "all of us", as the title called, are either dead or aliens. In fact, this is so bad, that this prompts me to write my first written review on IMDb. I really think people should not waste their time on this, and this can just worsen the already bad enough ignorant misunderstanding and lack of understanding in real mankind history.
